I know this isn't the best place to ask this, but since this thread has good vibes in general I'll go for it.

I've been working my way through all the Zelda games (non-chronologically) and was wondering: Is The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between worlds a remake of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past? I have both (on 3DS and the eshop respectively) and can't seem to get a straight answer on if its a sequel, a remake, or a re-imagining or what exactly.

Even though I'm an old school gamer I got to the Zelda series late and its probably my favorite, I play one a year and its down to these two so some guidance would be appreciated.  Thanks friends!

They are both set in the same “World” (i.e. similar map) but they are not the same game—sequel is probably the “best” word given the options, but aside from being the same version of Hyrule, the two stories are independent. Certainly not a remake or reboot.

You would probably consider it a Spiritual Successor. I believe it uses the same map layout as Link to the Past and both focus on the light world/dark world mechanic. And every Zelda story is basically the same and not really connected to the others in any meaningful chronological or continuous way. Basically, Link Between Worlds is entirely its own game, just playing off a lot of the mechanics and structure of A Link to the Past.

If you have a new 3ds (the one that has the better 3D display) I highly recommend playing a link between worlds with the 3D all the way up. It seems silly for a 2d top down game, but it really makes pitfalls look bottomless and certain enemies and items can pop up towards you. One of the few 3ds games I could play in full 3D the entire time without getting a headache.

Just to follow up on what's been said, there are a number of small references that you'll pick up on if you play A Link to the Past first, as A Link Between Worlds is set after it chronologically (centuries later) and has some callbacks for fans. But they're small and don't impact the story in any meaningful way.

I will say though, that the Oracle games and Link's Awakening are both sequels to A Link to the Past, and you play as the same "Link" - so it's fun to play those in succession to get his complete story. Kinda like Ocarina/Majora.

Woo boy I sure messed up not buying Stardew Valley for my Switch when it was on sale last. I started playing on PC and it's the only game I can think about. Crossing my fingers for something soon. This game seems like it'd be a portable dream.

Thank you guys for the pointers! I actually never play with the 3d on and this is a good reason to actually give it a try.

And thanks for the heads up on the Oracle games, I've always been curious about them because handheld Zelda games seem to have aged exceptionally well.

Play Rune Factory 4 someday if you like Stardew that much, it’s one of the series the dev took inspiration from

Also like others said, Mexican eShop is your friend if you’re cheap (we all are)

To be fair, that's not really a sale. That's just exploiting regional pricing.
Did a little digging and it was both exploiting regional pricing and was on sale at the time.

Not that it really matters in the big picture. So far I've kept all my eshop purchases to just the standard USA store.

Fishing Star came out today. I've spent a couple of hours with it. And well, it's super fun and addictive! The graphics are crisp. The water effects are impressive, and the atmosphere and music are all very inviting. The fact that it has over 180 fish to catch blows all other Switch fishing games out of the water. Yeah, the $30 price is steep but you're getting hours and hours of content. Especially if you intend to collect all the gear, and catch and 4-star every fish. You can even play a special mini-game with the Labo fishing rod.

If you're into fishing games it's a no-brainer purchase, but if you're just kind of interested in these games you may be better off waiting for a sale.

Here are my first impressions:
The game keeps you very engaged throughout the catch process. You first need to manipulate the lure to entice the fish. Then once it bites you pull up on the rod to land the hook. After that, you need to angle the rod depending on which way the fish is pulling and be careful that you don't reel in at the wrong times (there's a meter at the top of the screen). As it gets closer you might enter a small mini-game where it will have you immediately position the rod at a certain angle, or a circle will appear in the water and you need to pull up on the rod at the right time to get the fish closer to you.

Sounds complicated, but once you get the mechanics down it becomes second-nature and you end up feeling like you've really battled with the fish and earned your catch.

Using the joy cons to mimic a real fishing rod is great (motion controls are accurate), but if you just want to relax you can use a Pro or joy-con grip controller to have joystick controls.

I do have some gripes though, only because I feel like a few little tweaks could have made the game great. There is no way to tell what fish you're catching before you reel it in. This is a big one for me. In Fishing Resort if you were looking for a stingray you could scare away the spiky and tiny looking fish and only cast towards the disk shaped shadows. This game just has large and medium identical shaped shadows. You could reel in a torpedo-shaped fish and then the catch screen will pop up and tell you you've just caught a starfish... I really feel like they could have made the fish look like actual fish while they're in the water. Especially since the scenery is so nicely detailed. It takes you back a little to keep reeling in the same generic shadow every time.

I've only played for a little while, but every location so far has me fishing from land. I hope I'll eventually get to go out on a boat.

There is a fish book, but you will mostly see your fish on the catch screen, and they're very pretty and detailed (my favorite part of the game). From what I can tell, they're true to their real life counterparts. But I do wish I could twirl them around on the catch screen to see them better. You're stuck watching them dangle upright and wiggle around for a bit. It lets you take pictures, and there's even a cool effect of water droplets falling off of them.

Lastly, there are a lot glaring grammatical errors ("This is a fish that has never been catched before"). I hope they can fix them in future updates because they're a bit hard to overlook.

Despite the price, I'm very pleased with this game. It's exactly what I've been looking for and I hope you guys will give it a chance.

I don't think it's ever been on sale, as far as I can remember.
O my bad. Could've sworn it was 7.49 over holiday break but that could've just been Steam.

Anyhoo, I went to Mexico after posting that and...it sure was interesting. And now I own Stardew Valley on my Switch.

Guys, aside from Super Mario U Deluxe, are/were there any other BIG(read that as in either first party-Nintendo titles, or something like a big Ubi Soft game or Rock star or activision ?...) or super anticipated Nintendo Switch titles coming up?

I want to pre order them early (meaning at the start of 2019) so I don't forget before anything happens to GCU!

Thanks fellas

Not sure if there are any diehard Cytus fans like me around here... but just a heads up that the NA version of Cytus Alpha is now available for preorder on Amazon for $49.99.  This is the entire original game with a new timeline interface along with all dlc bundled in and some additional content from Cytus Omega.   It includes a soundtrack CD (likely very limited number of tracks since the game has over 200 songs).  IMO, this is the best rhythm game of them all and it's a touchscreen game.  I can't imagine they'll have a good physical control scheme so if you are against touch screen stuff for some reason... it might not be for you.

It was available for $41.38 when Amazon first listed it, so I blind pre-ordered it. Thanks for the preview

Good to see Nicalis and Atooi games on sale! Mutant Mudds Collection for $3. The new puzzle game Mudd Blocks added is very fun. Can play with the touch screen in portrait mode. The game and music of the main game is so charming.

Will get Cave Story+. Finally down from $30. Any play

Tiny Barbarian DX?
looks really good, not seen much about it.

Wish I would have known when it went live. I've been checking fairly regularly since the playasia listing for the japanese version went live. This is one of the rare times I don't actually mind paying full price for a game... though hopefully it has another price drop/match like that before it comes out so my preorder adjusts to the lowest price.

So anyway, I’m thinking of grabbing a Mario Party game on 3DS to play in short spurts as a break from other games, and was wondering which one people would recommend. I don’t have a lot of familiarity with the series (played one of the Wii ones with friends back in college), and probably won’t be playing with anyone else all that often. From a brief browse on Metacritic, it seems like Star Rush might be my best option, though I’d appreciate some other opinions.

Been waiting for a West of Loathing sale...so better than nothing. Never played the Mario Party games, but the 100 best or whatever supposedly has the 100 best from the last entries of the series, so maybe that one.

Though I think that game is really just 100 minigames, without the actual board game mechanics, so if you want the actual Mario Party experience the Super Star or whatever it’s call is the only proper Mario Party-style game on 3DS.

Island Tour is so bad it’s not even worth mentioning?

I've been kinda wanting one too. I'm a weirdo that likes playing them by myself and really liked the ds Mario Party. I recently got a 3ds and will probably grab one of them if a decent deal ever pops up for any of them. Star Rush sounds like it's the best one, but if you have a Switch, Super Mario Party is the best rated one since the original N64 ones.

Is Reigns good? I'm kind of interested but reviews make it sound like it doesn't really have much staying power.
I’ve only played the original mobile releases, but they aren’t endless content generators. They’re sort of a hyper-choose-your-own-adventure style of thing, so you’d eventually hit a wall and see everything the games have to offer. They are excellent games with great writing, but if you’re concerned about not getting 20+ hours of play from $4 spent, then they might not be for you.

If you're willing to go digital, Club Nintendo Rewards has a 30% off coupon for Island Tour (300 Platinum points), and a 30% off coupon for Star Rush (90 Gold points).

Of Cytus, Deemo and Voez, Cytus is probably my favorite so looking forward to the Switch release
