Gonner has different controls on the Switch controller than it does on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. It seems like they changed the button layouts on Nintendo games to satisfy Japanese gamers kind of like the way that many Japanese versions of PS1 games also changed the button layouts from their Western versions.

Frisky, your link for Dragon Quest II is broken. It's because the URL is supposed to use "II" instead of "2". DQ3 is fine (and uses "3" in the URL instead of the roman numeral) .
 
This is probably a pretty niche thing, but I noticed some pretty good sales on the Japanese 3ds eshop. I'm probably going to pickup most of this stuff:

  • Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-Kun Special ¥100
  • Blazblue Continuum Shift II ¥100
  • E.X Troopers ¥761 
  • Sega 3D Fukkoku Archives ¥1,800
  • Sega 3D Fukkoku Archives 2 ¥2,200
  • Sega 3D Fukkoku Archives 3 Final Stage ¥2,700
The last 3 are pretty expensive, but only #2 had a US release as far as I know. And the others are pretty expensive for physical copies. 

There is also a sale on Level-5 switch stuff (someone posted earlier), but its mostly language heavy stuff. Tho I'm going to grab Yokai Watch 1 for a 1,000 yen.

I’ve only played a tiny bit, but I’d say that’s an easy yes. The game oozes style, and you can tell right away.

Also, it breaks my heart we never got the other Sega 3D collections, only the 2nd. :(

Oh wow, I didn't realize there was a 100 yen sale. Picked up some switch stuff: Double Dragon IV, Gacha Racing 2nd, and Guilty Gear XX.

DragonQuest's are tempting, but I'm having a hard time justifying $10 for a game like DQIII that I played 30 years ago.  Maybe @50% off.  

 
So who is going to write out the tutorial on how to buy these from the Japanese eShop as well as figure out which titles are in English or still playable without English?

First off you need a Japanese 3DS, as the 3DS's are all region locked, and then you access the eshop as you normally would and make your purchases(as Japan is the only eshop available to this device). Everything is in Japanese, but I'm guessing anyone who has a Japanese unit already, would be well versed in it's use in the region.

Ah, my bad, as I thought all games mentioned were on the 3DS. I did set up a UK account on my son's NS awhile back to use a code from the region, but no way in hell do I remember the process details. It wasn't hard, but my God, it was far from intuitive, sadly that often seems the case when dealing with "N" and anything online. LOL

Yeah, I’m very interested in grabbing the Switch Guilty Gear releases at these prices. I already have a Japanese Switch account set up on my system, that I used to download the JP versions of the Switch Online NES and SNES apps. But those were easy because they were free. The last time I looked into this, the easiest way to actually PAY for something on the JP eShop was to buy a pre-paid code from Play-Asia, but often the smallest denomination available was $50. Which was much more than I wanted to spend just to be able to grab a few $1 games :(

I also frequently carry a balance on the US eShop (I stock up on discount codes from Raise.com when there’s a sale) so I’m worried about losing my balance by adding a form of payment from a different region.

If anyone knows how to make this easy, I’m all ears.

-Set up a new My Nintendo account, or change the region of an existing account to Japan.
-Buy some eShop credit. People tend to use Play-Asia, but my experience has been terrible with them.

I personally recommend Japan Code Supply, (https://japancodesupply.com/collections/nintendo-prepaid-card) where after your first purchase (like most other site selling these, your purchase is likely to get held up for screening the first time) you get codes sent right away and you have a point rewards system. Only downside I’ve found is their stock cycles in and out fairly frequently, so you have to be on the lookout for the one you want.

-Once with the code, you redeem it into your Japan account. On the Switch, you enter the eShop and scroll to the last option on the left for the code entry screen.
-Browse for what you want, either in-console or on the web.
-The first field in the title information section of the store page is usually the language, look for the characters for 日本語 (Japanese) or 英語 (English).
-Check out, preferably on the console, since the process is the same as the English-language store: confirm amount, apply gold coins, confirm purchase.

As for games playable without English, that goes on a case by case basis. For example, the Level 5 games currently on sale are all RPGs or Layton games, so they’re going to be heavy on the language (but Yokai Watch in particular should use more basic language, it’s for kids).

I have a Wii and PSP, and I remember when that version came out, and for the life of me I can't remember if I played it or not. I either tried it, and thought it was terrible, and in turn tried my best to forget it. LOL Or I never tried it at all, which seems unlikely, since my PSP/Wii have been hacked for ages, and before doing that, I had a HUGE physical collections for both as well. Since I'm home currently even more than usual at this point, I'll for sure try and give it a go when I get the chance. I'm normally not as critical of a title like this, so long as the developers stay true to the base game ideals, then they can go as crazy as they want, just make something interesting.

PLEASE correct me if I’m mistaken, but I thought I read somewhere that, because the Switch is region-free, once you’ve made a digital purchase in one region, you effectively “own” it in all regions. Thus, if you buy the JP version of a digital title, you can also download the English version from the NA-region eShop. Anyone have any personal experience doing this, or am I totally off-base here?
EDIT: looks like it might depend on whether you changed your system’s region, vs just making a separate account for a different region.

Not sure of a list but I know Ace Attorney Trilogy and My Girlfriend is a mermaid are two of them. Usually when they were being released they mentioned English subs or such. As for Layton's Mystery Journey that doesn't have English subs so you need to get the English release of that. Here is a list for the Switch games in Japan with English subs Link.

That works for some games. But a lot of Japanese games are seperate skus. So, while the system region free and you can play the Japanese sku with no issues - its usually only going to support Japanese language. A lot of the American releases on the Japan eshop are the same sku as the US release though.

If you go into the games listing on the eshop, under language it would show : (none of the Level-5 games have this)
