I grabbed Rise: Race for the Future and while it's got a steep learning curve to it, it looks gorgeous on Switch and is the best-looking racer I've played in portable mode. Fantastic deal at $12 and change.

Can anyone give recommendations from the Atlas 3DS games on sale? I turned my 3DS on for the first time in probably 3 years and thought maybe I'd buy a couple of the 9.99 games if there are some that stand apart from the rest.

it's 19.99, but my strongest recommendation of that bunch is Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology

Right, I still have about $100 worth of 3DS games I want from the Atlus/Sega sale... I wish they’d drop them closer to where they’ve been on sale in the EU shop recently. As they are, the ones I’m missing are too expensive to impulse buy. Maybe next time.

Shin Megami Tensei IV is well worth the $9.99 if you haven’t played it.

If you’re looking at the Etrian Odyssey games:

Nexus could be the one to get, since it’s the culmination of the series and there’s no significant continuity to them, kinda in the same way Generations is for Monster Hunter. It can be overwhelming, though.

The Untold games and Persona Q are also good starting points, since they also have actual story modes to ease you in.

Kinda depends on what you’re into, but I’ll give some impressions, at least.

I would strongly recommend against Conception 2 unless you’re into cringey Persona rip-offs. Poorly written, kinda ugly, and it takes the waifu aspect to a vaguely creepy level.

I’ve heard Etrian Mystery Dungeon is pretty shallow, both as an Etrian Odyssey game and a Mystery Dungeon game, but I’ve never played it myself, so that’s just hearsay.

If you’re interested in dipping your toe into the Etrian Odyssey series, Untold 1 or 2 are decent starting places. Etrian Odyssey is a pretty hardcore first-person dungeon crawler RPG, and while Untold 1 & 2 are remakes of the first two games in the series (and thus a bit less refined than later entries), they also include more developed stories and protagonists. If you’d rather throw yourself into the series, 4 and 5 are supposed to have excellent gameplay for this style of game. I haven’t actually heard anything about Nexus yet, but it’s the latest (and supposedly last) entry. (Except for demos, I haven’t played any EOs post-3, myself, and I would recommend only buying one to start, because there’s a TON of gameplay in each, and because if you end up disliking one, you’re probably going to dislike all of them—they’re pretty similar.)

I played the demo of Legend of Legacy, and wasn’t at all impressed with the writing or characters, but the demo’s little more than the first part of the game, and many RPGs need more time to get going. (For the record, I may be mixing this up with The Alliance Alive, which was made by the same devs.)

I know they’re not $9.99, but I feel I’d be remiss not to mention that the Persona Q series may be even better places to dip your toe into Etrian Odyssey—while they don’t feature that series’ careful party building or challenge, they use the same first-person dungeon crawling and mapping mechanics, and have a big layer of Persona fanservice on top to help ease you into it, assuming you like the post-PS1 Persona series.

I haven’t played SMTIV yet, myself, but it seems to have been received fairly well by fans of the SMT series.

Soul Hackers is a pretty good game for its time, but like a lot of Atlus’s 5th generation and prior games, is definitely showing its age. Can’t really recommend unless you can get into that sort of old school experience.

Haven’t played Devil Survivor Overclocked, which is a remake of the original Devil Survivor, but I did play the original. It’s a pretty competent, somewhat challenging SRPG with likable characters and a pretty good story. It can be kind of grindy. The story is definitely aimed at the sort of people who like the Persona series.

I don’t know anything about Stella Glow. I think it was made by the same people who did Legend of Legacy and Alliance Alive?

It’s not Atlus, but the Sega 3D Classics are excellently remastered for the 3DS, and at $9.99 for 10 games (even if one of them is Altered Beast), the Collection is good value for money, assuming you’re interested in the games on offer.

Anyone have any opinions on volgarr the Viking? It looks punishing which I’m not too interested in right now.
Yes. This game started out as homebrew on the dreamcast and is considered a cult classic in the homebrew community. It is a difficult platformer. It requires memorization of the levels and even the enemies. Everything comes in the same way every single time. It's a great game if you're into speed running.

criscolbert, a number of the Atlus games have demos.  The demo for Stella Glow sold me on that game alone.  If you like turn based strategy mixed with a little rpg... it's fully worth checking out.

Stella Glow is good, though I hate hate that the socializing part is artificially limited your first run through. This limits who you can gain max affection with. Not cool, but the story is nice and the graphics are really good for a 3DS game. I really enjoyed my time through it. Good TBS game.

It's like a fresh take on Bomberman. I'd pay$1 for the soundtrack without hesitation. The game is really fun multiplayer and the central gimmick is great.
I recommend you to buy it.
You had me at Bomberman. Thanks!

Between this, Volgarr, and Inversus - quite a nice little haul of good games I never knew existed, for less than 4 bucks total.

Would Valkyria Chronicles 4 or the original be recommended if I’ve never played one? Thanks!
The original is a great starting point, people tend to say it’s the best of the bunch.

But 4 is a standalone story for the most part, it is also very good, and runs and looks a bit better than the first.

Anyway, hurry up, that sale ends in like 15 minutes.

Missed it, but I’ll pick one of them up next time. Thanks for the reply!

Has anyone here played Rad? It’s on sale for $7.99.
It looks really neat but haven’t heard anyone talk about it ever.

Anyone have any thoughts on Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid? Ideally, I'd like to see it cheaper, but the kids are interested.

It's OK. I feel it's super repetitive though. It controls very well on the Switch handheld, though the graphics are kind of fuzzy at times. I'm not a huge fan of the enemy variety. The music is really good synthwave type stuff. I enjoyed it a few hours honestly. I do think it's flawed, but it could give some good entertainment back. I do feel the fighting in it was maybe not detailed enough so you do the same moves often.

I loved Stella Glow. I downloaded it ages ago in an Atlus sale, and I started playing it recently. Put something like 80 hours into it. Great story, great voicework, great sounds, just great. Don't miss Stella Glow.

lol, it's a little creepy, but I enjoyed it on the Vita. I wouldn't recommend it because it's pretty average overall.

I’ve heard Etrian Mystery Dungeon is pretty shallow, both as an Etrian Odyssey game and a Mystery Dungeon game, but I’ve never played it myself, so that’s just hearsay.
It's poorly designed in the sense that you are better off using 1, maybe 2 characters instead of a full party. And then you basically run a near-invincible dodge dancer at that point.

So the only way to play the game without ripping your hair out is to break the game, and breaking the game makes it boring. So poorly received, they never localized the second game.

I'm personally not a fan of Untold, but a lot people who couldn't get into the main EO games love Untold. I only played Untold 2, but it has some horrible balance with the story party, where the main character eventually does 80% of everything.

For the main games, 4 and 5 are good if you like them. Nexus is a little unbalanced and a little fanservicey. It's good, but drags from having a mishmash of all the main games. I'd play EO5 if you actually want to play an EO game.

Persona Q was pretty good. It's not even really a EO-Lite, even if it's slightly easier. I would probably recommend this over EO: Untold. And skip Persona Q2. That game was boring compared to the first (and EO).

I haven’t played SMTIV yet, myself, but it seems to have been received fairly well by fans of the SMT series.
SMT4 is ok, but I prefered Strange Journey. It's so insanely similar that I had a hard time finishing 4.

lol, it's a little creepy, but I enjoyed it on the Vita. I wouldn't recommend it because it's pretty average overall.
I agree that Conception 2 was a bit weird, but I enjoyed it. However, I'd never played a Persona game, so it was unlike anything I'd played before. It was always exciting to see what kind of child would appear when the characters "classmated." I found the story interesting, but combat got repetitive. Kind of average, yes, but still a lot of fun to be had.

Has anyone here played Rad? It’s on sale for $7.99.
It looks really neat but haven’t heard anyone talk about it ever.

I enjoyed what I've played of it. It requires a bit of a time sink to really make decent progress.

The music is really good and the game play is fun but really depends on what type of mutations you receive.

There are a lot available to unlock. It is a rogue lite so keep that in mind.

If you like the genre and know what to expect it is well worth that price.

Katamari Reroll for $10 and both Guacamelee games for 70% off on the eShop.

Katamari is tempting, but I've already bought Guacamelee twice, so I should probably finally play it before I buy it for a third time.

Following Guacamelee 1 and 2's pattern in DekuDeals shows that the price keeps decreasing steadily. So, I am on the fence of waiting for a higher discount percentage or going for them. I have A LOT of backlog so purchasing them now or later on will not make a huge difference, but my cheapassgamer OCD is kicking and don't know what to do...

I know exactly what you mean. If it helps push you one way or the other, there’s only about a $1 difference between the current price and the lowest it’s been on other platforms.

Cheers guys. And that is a nice tip helvetica :) Guess I could wait for the next discount as it should be pushed a little bit more to match the other consoles hehe.

Got Toki Tori for Wii U for 19 cents, and it's actually pretty good. I recommend it if you like puzzle platformers.

New update lets you remap buttons on Nintendo controllers. Yes!
Woo hoo! Just tested this out; works perfectly with the 8bitdo M30, since the Switch recognizes it as an official Pro Controller. Yup, Sega Genesis Classics just got a WHOLE lot more playable.

Are those Labo VR kits really good for kids? I don’t expect high quality VR but if it’s good enough for kids to enjoy I may try and get them all.
I've used VR across pretty much all levels, as I've used the bottom of the barrel, and the most expensive amusement level VR and it's OK for what it is. My son is 14 and he used the VR probably longer than he used the other sets, but I'll even say at $20, any of these is probably a solid deal. The VR is very basic, but it does work for the most part, like all VR, it's just really low in resolution, but that's why it's probably perfect for kids, as their level to please is much lower than most adults.

While the normal asking price is a bit much, besides using these for basic games on the NS, you also get to build the stuff, and that may be more fun for some, and less for others. My son loves building and using, and I just ordered him the Robot bundle this morning, as it's the only one he didn't have. It's also the most basic of the offerings, as it pretty much only offers one thing, while the others have much more content. My buy in for this set was $20, and I knew it would get there at some point.

So yeah, for an entry level VR kit, were the bulk of the cost is gone, since most will already own the NS, it's a good use of the tech for something that ain't terrible. By no means would I recommend anyone buy an NS to use this VR, but if you already have one, then it's not to bad, especially on the cheap.

All the 3D Sega 3DS games aren't on sale anymore? Thought they'd last longer, I shouldn't have procrastinated :(

How often do they go on sale?

They’ve been going on sale the last couple of times there’s been a Sega sale on Switch, and those have been happening every 2 months or so since November. It could be a little while.

You might have just sold me on this. My 9yr old would love it. Does it have a game with it? Also I read you can use the VR with Botw.

Not sure why it took them this long to allow something as basic is this but it is welcome. I can finally move some earlier downloaded games off my system memory!
So annoying. Now I just want folders, themes are nice but I’m also fine with just dark.

But I kinda fixed the SD card issue prior to this update. When I bought a new SD card I just deleted all games from the system (also when I changed to the new switch from V1) and then re-downloaded everything on the new 512gb SD card.
Now if you have slower internet or data caps... wasn’t an option.

Remapping is a welcome change also.
