Wow, Balan Wonderworld was hot garbage ... couldn’t cancel my preorder fast enough. Pretty sure it will only appeal to people wearing Dreamcast goggles ...
 
Just a heads up for anyone who was in the same boat as me, but you can still complete the BoxLunch Mario Mission even though it shows as expired. Was stuck at 13/15 missions done before I saw that posted on Twitter buried in a thread

The actual gameplay, not the cgi lead in, plays like something from 2 console generations ago. It’s going to appeal to people who like that game director’s style ... because it’s like he remade an old 3D sonic game or Nights or something like that.

For someone that has no nostalgic memory of his earlier titles ... it was crap. And it might look better on a PS5 or Series X ... but the fundamentals are just rough. I can’t see anyone loving this who doesn’t love his past games ... and I usually like weird Japanese games like Katamari, etc ... but this is just bad.

Yeah I played the demo as a fan of the classic Sonic 3D games and NiGHTS into Dreams and to me it looked and played like an old Saturn/N64/PS1 platformer. Right down to the framerate and that horrible camera. The way the world bends up into view combined with the other issues made my brain hurt before I could finish the second stage. Overall though, even with my nostagia goggles on... I kind of hated the game itself. It was just a big fetch quest of making sure you have the correct suits to change into to reach all of the crap littered through the level. I wonder what they were thinking putting out such a garbage demo like that. I can't imagine many will stick around for the full game.

 
Thanks everyone for the heads-up on Balan. I wasn't going to play the demo since I was so sure I'd like this game, and I got it for $40 during the Target B2G1 free sale, but I'm really glad I gave it a try.

I really wanted to like this game. The opening cinematic drew me in immediately, just like the trailers have. Aside from the obvious cues Balan the character's design took from NiGHTS, his antics also reminded me a bit of Discord from My Little Pony. I also loved the design for Evil Balan (let's call him Reala). During the opening, I was really excited to play.

Then, the actual game started. I began in handheld mode and woof was it ugly, so I quickly docked the Switch and was extremely disheartened to find it still looked like crap. I'm sorry, but if games like Atelier Ryza, made on a fraction of the budget this game probably had, can look great in handheld mode, then this game has no excuse. Square Enix themselves were able to make Dragon Quest XI look only a little worse than the PS4 on Switch, and handheld looked just fine. There's no excuse for this game to look this bad on Switch. The environmental pop-in was jarring, and because the stages were always moving and bouncing around, it led to a bit of sensory deprivation. Not enjoyable.

"Well, ok," I said to myself. "Looks aren't everything. This game is pretty fun so far!" I have tons of nostalgia for Sonic Adventure and Billy Hatcher from when I was little, and I loved NiGHTS into Dreams when I played it for the first time a few years ago, so I was drawn into the gameplay right away. I liked using the different costumes to get the collectibles and advance in the stage, but then I got hit...and I lost the costume. Oh, hell no. Now I have to go find the damn thing again. Was a health meter too hard to program in? I actually lost all my costumes at one point and kept running into enemies to see if you could actually die, but it seems you can only die from falling. Very strange. Between all that and using keys to open the costume crystal things, it's all really tedious.

But still, but still, I wanted to give it a chance. It was still fun! It had a pseudo-Chao Garden! Never mind that the camera was actively fighting me the entire time. Never mind how inaccurate the platforming was and how only half the costumes allow you to jump. Never mind how all four face buttons do the same thing, further making the lack of the ability to jump on some costumes even more baffling. Never mind that half of the Japanese voice acting wasn't subtitled. Never mind that creepy farmer staring at me.

Sigh...I think I'll wait for a sale. After looking at a graphics comparison video, it certainly does look better on PS4, but honestly not by much. The PS5 version is how the game should have looked on PS4, while the PS4 version is how it should have looked on Switch. The entire experience is lazy and not very well thought out. What a shame.

I just saw a new promo pop up on my switch for double gold points for specific eShop games including "purchased from retailers" included in the short list of games is Zelda BotW. Since BotW is $40 digital at Walmart right now that's $6 back. $34 just might be enough to push me over the edge for the upgrade from cart to digital.

This looks like another if you bought or own any Drageus Games they are having a special publisher sale.

They have Bridge Strike for 20 cents so I going to pick that up. Supposed to be a fun homage to river raid.

 
looks like ubisoft has their normal eshop sale going on again. I picked up starlink yesterday at walmart for $5 so seems like a good time to pickup one of the dlc packs. Still need to get mario + rabbids gold but i am going to wait a few more years for it to go below $20 lol

Crypt of the NecroDancer is also on sale for $4. I am probably just going to wait for the physical copy of the zelda version to go on clearance.

Good luck on that wait for Mario Rabbids. I feel like it's been a year and the price of the deluxe version of Starlink still hasn't budged from that $25

Crypt of the NecroDancer is great and a steal at $3.99. I enjoyed the gameplay way more than Cadence of Hyrule, though the soundtrack on the latter is killer.
 
Does anybody know what's up with the eshop-prices website for Argentina eshop? All the prices jumped by like 40% but seem to be the same on the actual Argentina eshop site.

Out of the games that are on sale I would recommend Spirit Roots.

I have bought Atomic Heist, Spirit Roots, Bridge Strike.

I think I bought Atomic Heist first at $1.29 and the rest I got for huge discount prices.

I also downloaded Girabox and Funbox Party for free thanks to this thread.

Genetic Disaster is $.49 with their promotions and I've been considering it for a while.
The only reason I haven't bought it yet is file size.

There's a message at the top of the shop page that they've started charging the "Impuesto País" (Country Tax). I don't know the details and haven't bought anything since this started, but comparing eshop-prices to Argentina eshop, the tax seems to be 43%.

Oof, the poor folks. Between that and Nintendo updating the exchange rates a few months back that’s a massive price hike all around.

I just realized that I've gotten 14 of their games before (either for free or dirt cheap).

Great: Grood, Tardy, The Great Perhaps, Mushroom Quest and Bridge Strike

Good/Ok: Drawngeon, Atomic Heist, Pixel Gladiator, Breathing Fear

Avoid: Funbox Party, Dead Dungeon, Swaps & Traps, Girabox, Funny Bunny Adventures

Even the bad games can be sorta fun tbh (especially at their super low price point for owning any of their other titles).

Anyone play or recommend Mech Rage, Archaica, Sweet Witches or Genetic Disaster?
