I'd like to be proven wrong, but I can't see My Nintendo having some sort of big comeback just because the NS comes out. Like, all My Nintendo needs to be successful is to have a successful console attached to it and then Nintendo will finally put out the good rewards. If anything, they should be more generous now, for the people who actually supported the Wii U and to make sure that they keep buying Wii U games until NS comes out.

All that they're managing to do now is just making the people who will absolutely have a My Nintendo account when NS releases lose interest in the whole program.
The good days are gone, and won't be back. If the NS sold 50 million units(and that's next to impossible), they would never go back as it cost to much for the items they offered before.

Now they can have a rewards program that offers things most people already have, or just don't want. Plus, it's all digital crap, so in the end, it's really costing them next to nothing.

Hell, even if they managed to sell 100m units, they'll still be 100m short from their Wii/DS heyday unless they have some sort of handheld planned to release alongside NS. At this point, no one should expect another statuette, GCN controller, or some other expensive physical reward.

But it's not too much to expect better discounts, discounts on third party games, free games/dlc, or eShop credit. Even if the My Nintendo was 100% digital, it could still be well-received; much like the Nintendo Humble Bundles are. It's not like Nintendo is completely incapable of doing something people would actually like.

edit: The first My Nintendo points card for a physical product comes with the NES Mini. The ticket has a code to be redeemed on My Nintendo for a whopping 300 platinum coins.

Rumors about hardware aren't promising especially if you're in it for playing at home mostly

if true gonna scare off 3rd party again

You do realize that the Switch isn't a home console that is portable, right? It's a portable console that you can play at home.

I don't mind My Nintendo just being cheesy digital rewards, I just want something.  Not Miitomo shit or coupons for games I already own.  They're already recycling Themes!  Themes!  Themes are the least I expect, and they can't come up with more than 4.  I'll even take Badges at this point.  Just something...

Thanks for making that important distinction
It is quite an important distinction. Games aren't going to be designed to be played on your couch in front of a big screen TV, they're going to be designed to be played on the tablet. The dock is a secondary piece of hardware and is not the main focus. Nintendo is making this system with the full intention that you will only be playing it on the TV less than 50% of the time. That will affect how games are made and ported to the console.

love to see kemco  go over to limited run and  put like  5 or  so  of their games on a single cart for  29.99

I think you are completely wrong. I think they are making the system with the intent of targeting the broad market of gamers. They surely are designing it knowing some people will never disconnect the system from the dock. They surely know some people will never dock the system. They know some people will never play multiplayer games and others will play them heavily.

They are designing this thing with EVERYONE in mind. To be both social and not. To be a standalone mini console, a docked console, and a handheld console.

I doubt they think there is any one standard mix of how people will play the Switch.

I have read that 3rd parties are porting games from the PS4 and XB1 to the Switch. So the hardware should line up well with what we have with the current systems. If the screen on the handheld is indeed 720p, then that's a huge leap for handhelds. Console mode should handle many resolutions.

Games on handhelds for GENERATIONS now have included past console generation games ported over. Developing games for a handheld and a console is really not very different at all. The main thing is convenient saving options. Beyond that nothing really needs to change as long as the controls match up. I mean even if you consider Nintendo way behind the times with the hardware and how we are basically playing an upgraded N64 with the 3DS... look at Sony. We get the same games often between the Vita and even the PS4. Same RPG... designed by the same people... and made crossbuy much of the time too. This is going to be like that but with an even beefier system and without the proprietary memory cards or the need to have two systems let alone the whole hardware power gap between the handheld and console.

I really hope they pull it off.

The good book says man cannot serve two masters.

Nintendo is trying to please everyone and in the end will please no one.
You are so right. They really are of a mixed up mindset, as the NS is really the same things the Wii U should have been 5 years ago, and while better, really isn't anything new or ground breaking and is just more of the same really.

How Iwata saw this as some HUGE improvement to the failing Wii U boggles my mind, but I always thought he was rather "clueless" in regards to most things, so the NS really shouldn't be a big surprise to me at all. It's really just more of their broken thinking of "our way, or the highway" mentality.

Where Steve Jobs was a Jedi Master in regards to fan manipulation, as he truly sold those products on his say so alone, and fans loved him for it. Iwata only really ever had the hardcore fanboys in his control, and that was actually more funny, than anything else. LOL

I don't really understand the argument of "this is what the Wii U should have been five years ago". Is the PS4 not what the PS3 should've been ten years ago, except for like the fact that technology advances and time progresses linearly? There are reasons that things that are happening now didn't happen in the past. But hey, let's all just bitch about how we're owed jet packs.

Nintendo has very little wiggle room in regards to their future.

They fucked up hard with the wii u (based up sales vs projections) They won't get anymore fuckups (aka not listening to the people)

If they don't give the people what they want it's game over for Nintendo in the future

Besides the power of the NS, the same thing could have been done back then(removable or tablet controls). The 3DS could have also been used in the same way the Vita is used for remote play, if they would have thought of it at the time, and beefed it up which in turn, would have allowed the Wii U to have a better form of technology(as it would have had a standard controller), and with it working along side their great handheld line up of the 3DS would have done a hell of a lot better than it did.

The PS4 is just the new version of the PS3 sure, but the same could be said for the NES to the SNES. Natural progression is one thing, missed opportunity is another. The PS4 couldn't have been delivered at it's current price when the PS3 came out. Most of what the NS is offering, could have.

EDIT: That is also why the Playstation is labeled 1, 2, 3, 4 as each system is the newer and better version of the previous model. "N" is trying to say the NS is something new and different, and it's really not.

I'm failing to see the problem with the Switch (other than that it might not be powerful ENOUGH in the long run, which is typical of Nintendo systems and is a valid concern). Most people who have seen it are loving it, unlike Wii U. I know I sure as hell like the concept of a console and handheld in one; my Vita and Vita TV are proof of that.

Anyway, time is running out on those 3DS games that were on sale until the end of the year. If you want some cheap My Nintendo coins, be sure to grab them before the sale ends.

Most people, like the ones here who tried the Wii U:

Don't believe everything you read, as you see how that turns out.

I was mainly talking about consumers; I don't know how devs feel about it. But it does seem weird that so many developers are on board with Nintendo initially, then most of them just jump ship at some point. The fact that Nintendo consoles are mainly for first party games sort of becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

In any case, I already decided I'm not getting the system for a good while. I've been burned by early adoption enough.

it's of course in their interest to be on board

not the developers fault that Nintendo makes dumbass decisions in regards to hardware

the developers want to make the games and the gamers want to want the product but nintendo somehow manages to alienate both even with the demand

But the developers are already looking at, and working with, the hardware. If that were an issue then they wouldn't get on board in the first place. (Course with the 3DS, many games were announced and then cancelled before or around the system's release.)

Whether or not the Switch is a success remains to be seen but this logic is terrible. Devs get on board for almost every product launch because it's financially worth it in the case it takes off. It's a calculated risk, it doesn't mean anything other than a business decision got made.

You're right that it's a financially fueled decision. And not even much of a risk, if the games in question are mainly ports. (Although if it was all about money, then we should have seen some good third party games on the Wii, one of the most successful consoles ever.)

My issue isn't so much why they get in on the launch as why they drop out afterward. If devs want to make games on Nintendo systems, there's nothing stopping them. When third parties stop making games on a system, that sets the system's fate in stone. And that's, again, a self-fulfilling prophecy. Doing one or two games on the new system is actually the opposite of a gamble when you look at it that way. The hot new thing doesn't have many games; this port that we're already familiar with is a must buy. Once that's over they walk away.

The only thing I can think of is again the issue of power. The western gaming world only cares about power, and Nintendo often just doesn't cut it. So developers just avoid them until there's an obvious opportunity for easy money.

I'm hesitantly optimistic. I don't care too much care about power in terms of cutting edge graphics, but in terms of game size and complex mechanics.

That being said i'm definitely not picking this up at launch just to see what happens to it within the first year or two

This is the reality of doing things different from others and then wanting or expecting the same results. The PS4 has "x" amount of units in the wild, XB1 has "y" amount, and the NS has "0".

Why is anyone going to make a game for a new system with no sales? When they can make it for the PS4, and even if it bombs, they will end up with more sales than if it did well on the NS. So just to keep a good relationship, they say we are "supporting" the NS, so if by some act of God, it actually becomes successful, they won't have burned a bridge.

I'm sure you'll get a few companies who have long time relationships with "N" who'll throw them a bone with a port, or a game that is kid/family friendly, which they know won't do well on the other consoles, but they won't be getting any AAA titles in this way.

Have you ever noticed why most major console release rather close to one another? It's so multiplat titles can happen, as the developers would rather make 2 games, then gamble on one and loose. Since "N" does what they want, when they want, they set themselves up for failure each time.

In that video I posted earlier, when a company shows a game, it's in development, and more than likely will happen, when the same group of people are giving lip service, and nothing more, they are only being friendly and keeping a good relationship to say we like the system, or we will be making games in the future.

And just like what you have seen recently with most Wii U kickstarter games, at some point the developers will say the Wii U version isn't happening due to low system sales, and it's not worth their time. They knew that early on, but the idea of it coming helps promote the game with the Wii U fan base, and helps bring up the overall numbers in KS, so even if they cancel and refund pledgers, they have still benefited from it, and they still have a relationship with "N" as it was a "business" decisions to not make it. No harm, no foul.

When you design a system that is outside the norm, and don't offer things that the other systems do, you set yourself up for failure every-time. I personally wouldn't make a game for the NS, as it's a HUGE gamble of time, money and resources and not good business, period.

If they launched a new system in close proximity to the others, and offered similar specs, they would get some games just by default, and then sales would be the deciding factor a little later on. In this situation, it is a deciding factor now and not later, and when giving the choice, almost no one is going to be taking a HUGE risk now.

luigi's mansion hd 1&2 and a great number 3

that's how you get me nintendo

don't forget nintendo, once I start collecting I go balls deep so you want to get me

So many text walls. This all would have made a much more honest Nintendo Switch commercial. Show the people playing and enjoying themselves for like a minute, but then go straight to their computer to argue about Nintendo business strategy and inconsequential distinctions between what type of console they were playing.

Remember everyone: Be yourself, and try to have a good time.

I just dream somehow Nintendo get's Yu Suzuki to put Shenmue 3 on the Switch.  My whole purchasing decision comes down to the games and price.  If it has games I want at launch and some near launch as well as some big promises of games to come... then I could see preordering this.  I think $300 for the system, dock and the little brick to join the controller halves would be fair.  If it's more than that then it better play games like the regular XB1 & PS4 without being severely compromised due to hardware power.   Nintendo also has a huge back catalog of classics on the Wii/WiiU/3DS eshop.  If we can convert licenses or get a bundle of digital classics at launch... that would be pretty cool.

Yeah, good luck with that request. I think you have a better chance of Shenmue 3 happening, and I see that as less than ZERO!

Doing things different is what keeps those who do buy Nintendo systems coming. If I wanted what everyone else is doing, I'd have a PS4 or X1 (I don't).

If everyone played follow the leader then the industry would stagnate. If Nintendo tried to offer everything other companies do and then some, their console prices would be through the roof, nobody would buy them, and they'd be shooting themselves in the foot.

It's true that devs go where the money is, but on the other hand gamers go where the games are. If more devs were willing to make games for Nintendo, then doing so would become less of a risk.

great story

now here is one

Nintendo thought they would sell 100 million wi u's and they sold 13 million

they fail again and there won't be a nintendo so they need to figure out something

hopefully for nintendo and what is left of their fans the switch will stop the bleeding

Depending on the architecture and specs of the Switch, it could be close to no risk to include ports to the system. A lot of it comes down to the game engine supporting it. If it's easy to add it into the mix with all the cross developed games... then I think we'll get a lot more 3rd party support. It it's hard, then it'll probably end up not getting as much support. I know this isn't original games, but there is a big core of the market that goes where the big 3rd party games are. If it's too much trouble to support the Switch, it just won't get adopted by the big companies... which ... would be a shame.

So I fired up animal crossing last night to try the amiibo update and man does that game guilt trip you. I haven't played it in three years and all my citizens are like "oh whose this guy?" "Omg I thought you'd never return" "No I'm not crying you meanie". So I'll check back in a few months. Too many games out this fall.

Sadly, that is a very limited market. If you ask anyone at "N", Iwata included(if you could), and each person would say they would rather sale 100 million units than 13 million. I'm a long time fan, and many innovations they have brought to the table or still used actively in the industry today.

Most of their recent so called innovations(something different as you say), are just "innovations" for innovations sake. It is not anything that adds real "value", and that is the issue. I would love for them to create something new and different, but a tablet with removable controls is not it, as it has been done by many other companies over the years.

They keep doing things their own way, but in the end, they employ thousands, and to stay in business as a console maker and 1st party developer, they need to sale to more than fanboys, and little kids and the rather limited market looking for something different. That audience is already buying new and strong hardware, VR, and smart phones on an annual basis. Nothing "N" is currently bringing to the table is going to change the Wii U numbers by that much with their new system. Will it sale more, maybe? But maybe not.

Every home console since the NES(minus the Wii of course), has sold less than the previous generation. I see that as a problem(and a really bad trend), and they should to. Each new system had new ideas, some great, and some not so much. But in the end, if they continue down this course of "innovation/different", they are going to innovate themselves right out of business.

What keeps me coming, honestly, is that maybe one day they'll make a system that can compete specs-wise with the other big console makers, so I can see what the franchises I love are capable of. I come back because I hope I can see Ninty do creative things & think outside the box, or create something similar inside the box, on a software/game basis, NOT a hardware basis. The Wii drove everyone I know away from Nintendo. I still haven't beaten Skyward Sword because of how terrible it looks on an HDTV (and it required me to stand or sit way up in my recliner to avoid hitting elbows on couch/chair, and all kinds of crap I don't want to do when getting immersed in a videogame world). I never bought a Wii U because of the horrible value when compared to the other consoles (I bought the "other" console when I had the money to buy a Wii U, so I own both a ps4 & an X1). Wii U has about 10-15 games I want to play, and there's no way I'm spending $300 for that, when I'd still have to buy a decent controller separately.

I have my 3DS for Ninty games, which I only own for the 3D, so I do understand "good" hardware decisions when it comes to being different. Although the 3D isn't used by majority of gamers I know, it can be turned off (unlike motion controls that were forced). I hate that games like Pokémon aren't forced to use the 3D like other devs were forced to use motion controls, because this means I will never play those games. I am disappointed enough that I got talked into buying Pokémon Y, & it only had some battles in 3D. Moon/Sun has no 3D beyond a camera minigame. I have a feeling that Mario on iPhone (and only on iPhone, unfortunately) is a sign of where Ninty is headed for good if this Switch doesn't give me a better picture on my HDTV than the Wii U (all because they wanted this thing to be played when people are taking the train, or walking their dog). It seems to me that they don't understand gamers, and they don't care to. Ninty doesn't want to have to give gamers what they want. They have such conceit, that they think gamers should like what they create, period. They want the casual people who buy videogames to help them catch lightning in a bottle for a second time, all to prove they know what's best for us, rather than us knowing ourselves what we want (progressives of the gaming world).

You might be right about people like me being a small market. It's true that they absolutely have to start appealing to the type of gamers that flock to other consoles, because they're in a bad way right now. I just personally don't want to see them trying to do so in a way that compromises the sense of creativity and uniqueness that N has come to be known for.

I guess the best solution would be to keep their innovation to the software department, as mentioned. Offer hardware closer to the competitors, at least for a generation or two, to win back those they've lost. All the while brainstorming ways to truly innovate the industry hardware-wise, and once they have a solid idea that they're truly confident in, come back and shake things up once more.

Honestly, that's what I'm looking for exactly^.

I grew up loving "N", hell I even own two coin-op cocktail games from them(Donkey Kong & Jr.), and I love the innovation they have had in hardware and software in the past, but currently the quality of games is way down, and the hardware just makes no sense to me.

Like I said, I'm all for innovation, but for things that will be around 5 generations from now. not stuff like motion controls that barely worked, and are now all but forgotten for the fad they where one generation past there entry point.

They really need to look at what they have done well, and get back to basics and start building on a good foundation, and stop with all the we are different nonsense. They are for sure different now, but I really don't see that as a good thing anymore.

Japan had a Direct focusing on Miitopia (which is basically an RPG version of Tomodachi Life) and it looks fun.

I'd just like to point out that Nintendo is TRULY TRULY (and I say this as a '86 NES/Nintendo Power fan) terrible at launches.

Phat had a 6-9 month game free launch.  Seriously, no games after launch for nearly a year.  Almost sunk the platform.

3DS did so poorly they INVENTED the "ambassador" program to incentivize us because they screwed us so bad with that platform.

I'm still trying to figure out the Wii U as I own it and MAYBE have played it 20-30 hrs it's entire life.  (probably not even)

So yea... call me skeptical about the Switch.
