I was thinking of getting Shovel Knight for X1 for the Battletoads extra content but it looks like a perfect game for 3DS... Is the extra content worth it or should I just go for the 3DS version?

The extra content is just one boss fight that wanders around on the world map, a la SMB3, so it's not that much. If you get the Shovel Knight Amiibo, that's a completely new campaign with the Custom Knight and an RPG leveling system for unlocks. Besides that, it's all the same and more about where you'd prefer to play it. It works well on 3DS since you can use the touchscreen to switch between relics a little bit more easily, though I didn't use it in more hectic areas since that would take my attention away from the action.

Thanks for this! Going for the 3DS version then!! :)

I have a wii u and have never used an ammibo or really have any idea what they do

is the content added ever worth the price or are they mainly collectibles like those pop vinyl things?

That's a personal question. I feel like very RARELY is the content worth the $10-15 price for them. I have bought a couple, but after the run around for the Shulk Amiibo, I was left with a very sour taste about the entire thing. There are alternative methods but we're not allowed to discuss that on this forum.

Most other Amiibo games use them for token power-ups and other minimal features, so Shovel Knight has the best reward for it of any game I've seen out there. This shows off the specific customizable stuff for Custom Knight and the co-op mode that the Wii U version gets. Yacht Club has had to produce and handled distribution of their Amiibo on their own, so they seem to have made the best of it having sold about 90% of their stock before ordering more to keep up with demand.

Add in the free Plague Knight campaign that was added via updates a few months ago and two more campaigns that are coming later this year, they've done a great job supporting the game for the $10 or $15 it costs to buy.

thanks, it's out of stock on amazon but I think I'll order the shovel knight one so I can have at least one and I'm all about campaign content

Adding on to what the others said, a single amiibo generally can be used to unlock content in multiple games, so it also depends on how many compatible games you have.

I have the most popular wii u games with only a few exceptions

I hate to start a new collection because once I do there is no turning back for me

Shovel Knight is an absolute must buy. Just bought it for Wii U and the Amiibo as well. You won't be sorry.
Totally agree. And the Amiibo is one that makes a nice change to the game by making it a leveling affair and not just collection, even just on the 3DS. The WiiU multiplayer with it is also a really nice addition. Probably my most used Amiibo.

If you know this about yourself, then don't do it. I started with all of wave 1, then opened them, then decided I wanted to keep a sealed set along with the open set. Now I have shelves full of almost 100 amiibo sealed and another display case with the opened ones. I've started to consider selling my sealed ones, all of which are US and first prints but I spent a lot of time and energy gathering them...

But yeah, Shovel Knight! Just bought the 3DS version and I dig the soundtrack and how much it reminds me of classic Capcom platformers.

So I own a Wii U and 3DS XL, PS3, PS4 and Xbox One.  The game is not cross buy, which sucks, so from what I'm reading here, I should get it for 3DS over playing on the big screen and better graphics on home consoles?  Wii U has off screen play I'm sure right?  I will research which version has features I might be interested in.  If the 3D really is awesome, I might get it.

Depends on how you want to play it, as it's great wherever you can get it. Wii U supports off-TV play. I've played a little bit of the 3DS version with 3D on and it's okay. It just adds a little bit of depth between the background and foreground.

Wii U has off-screen play, and if you get the Amiibo, it unlocks co-op mode, which is a Wii U exclusive feature. I would say the Wii U version is the definitive way to play Shovel Knight.

The graphics aren't better on consoles or on PC. The game was designed with the 3DS screen resolution in mind and to scale perfectly to 1080p.

In fact, given that the 3DS is the only version with the (excellent) 3D layers, I would argue that it is the graphically superior version.

Was having trouble deciding between the PSN and Wii U versions, but the added amiibo features discussed here pushed me to the Wii U. Thanks for the info!

Something weird just happened with my My Nintendo account. Back when people were getting emails for bonus coins for being a Club Nintendo member, I thought I was screwed because I used a different email for My Nintendo than I did for Club Nintendo. But I eventually got the email on my original email address.

Then just a short while ago I got an email on my My Nintendo email address, with another code for bonus coins (for the same reason; being a CN member). I checked and the two codes were different, so I assumed I was lucky and there was some glitch borne from me using two different emails. But when I enter the new code on My Nintendo, it says it's already been redeemed.

You should youtube the exclusive boss fights for Shovel Knight if you aren't going to get it on PS4/Xbone. Kratos and the Battletoads are not cheap cash-ins. Really nice, going all out bosses.

Just one wandering boss each, yes, but certainly nice additions.

Could I buy the 3DS version of Shovel Knight if I don't have a 3DS?  I have the disc version of the game on Wii U, but I'd like to have it ready to play by the time I get a Nintendo 3DS.

I don't know if they block purchases for accounts not attached to the corresponding console, but you could grab it from the webstore links in the OP. Just make sure you attach that account to the 3DS whenever you get it.

Just a reminder to get your 90 free platinum coins in MyNintendo for signing into the eshop, Miiverse, and MyNintendo (the little silver coin near the radio on the main screen - it's not listed in your normal missions).

There's also 30 coins by signing into Nintendo.com

So 120 weekly points, plus the Miitomo stuff.

I take it everyone knows about the secret mission at the bottom on the my.nintendo.com page, when you click on the brick block.  Good for 10 platinum coins.

My miitomo coins are piling up on the top of the box that holds them now. Does anyone know if they cap at some point? I swear if the image shows me with any more coins they're going to have to pile them up on the ground around it.

The fact that they call buying a game a "mission" is pretty ridiculous to me.

"Your mission - give me money. Yay! You did it! Good job entering in that credit card info. Just one more digit...and...GREAT!"

How insulting.
