That's because GameStop's program is terrible, unless you're a video game reseller. At least MyNintendo gives people a chance, instead of asking for 25,000 points for a pair of socks.
I've actually gotten a few nice items from GS over the years, and I have the free account. If I paid the $15 annual fee, I would have gotten some even better items. But for a program that I barely keep track of, it's been decent.

At this point, I find it better than "N" latest efforts by far.

I've only redeemed my points for the coupons. Paying the $15 has paid off greatly in all the free or nearly free games I've gotten over the last year. The buy 2 get 1 coupon was handy as well. Really for anyone buying used games, the GS deal is pretty sweet. I don't know if I'll re-up for another year when mine comes due... but it easily paid for itself. It also helped me that one of my kids sometimes buys full priced games and of course he uses my GS account to make sure I get the points.

Sony's rewards program is pretty solid as well, if you buy digital games. I think I've gotten around $40 worth of free PSN credit for just having my account linked to the rewards program.

Nintendo hasn't been too bad. I think I've gotten about 4 or so free games from it and I don't buy any retail games in digital form for my 3DS.

Some programs work better for some people than others. Right now Nintendo is in a slump... but I think we'll get some more free game options soon.

Randomly thinking about getting a 3dsxl (gotta use coins before they expire and they don't have shit for wii u)

I haven't handheld gamed since the original gameboy

I've done a little research online but I am wondering if any of you have info or recommendations for

system/bundle (I shop on amazon)

should I wait till holidays?

anything I need to know about the system or current handheld gaming that would help me?

these current systems play older games from older systems? if so which? all?

anything else?

Get one of the New 3DS systems, either regular or XL (XL's are used at demo kiosks, so if that's too big get regular size), as it is the better performing system. It also has amiibo functionality built in, so if you ever pick one up you don't need a new device.

As for bundles, I believe the only one currently in stock is the Mario 3D Land bundle which has the regular size New 3DS. There are other special editions, but none of them include games.

If you're planning on buying a lot of digital games, especially retail ones, you will want to pick up a 32GB Micro SD, as the card included in the system is very small. You'll also need a small screwdriver since the SD Card is under the bottom cover.

Oh, and before I forget, none of the systems aside from OG 3DS come with a charger, so you'll need to buy one separately. I would also pick up an outer case. You'll DEFINITELY need screen pritectors, especially if you play a lot of old DS games.

Waiting until the holidays isn't a bad idea, as there will likely be a LOT of bundles at various stores. I can almost guarantee somebody will have a bundle with one of the upcoming Pokémon games.

Also, the 3DS does play all regular DS games. As for game recommendations...

3DS - Pokémon X/Y/OmegaRuby/AlphaSapphire, Super Mario 3D Land, any Mario & Luigi game, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, Dragon Quest 7, Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, Fantasy Life, any Ace Attorney game, any Professor Layton game, Kirby Triple Deluxe/Planet RoboBot, Hyrule Warriors Legends, Project X Zone/2, Legend of Zelda: Link Between Worlds, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Mario Kart 7, StarFox 64 3D, Shantae and the Pirate's Curse, Shovel Knight, Azure Striker Gunvolt, Attack of the Friday Monsters, Liberation Maiden, Tales of the Abyss, and Super Smash Bros.

OG DS - Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass/Spirit Tracks, Kirby Super Star Ultra, New Super Mario Bros, Mario Kart DS, Dragon Quest 4-6, any Ace Attorney or Professor Layton game, Wario Ware Touched, Pokemon Platinum/HeartGold/SoulSilver/Black/White/Black2/White2, Pokemon Ranger 1-3, Pokemon Conquest, Dragonball Z: Attack of the Saiyans, Cooking Mama, and Kirby Squeek Squad.

If you mean systems as in old school Nintendo, the 3DS offers NES and Game Boy/Color titles. New 3DS systems also exclusively offer SNES games.

New 3DS systems also exclusively offer SNES games.
thanks so much for the time spent on this

exactly what I was looking for thank you

Randomly thinking about getting a 3dsxl (gotta use coins before they expire and they don't have shit for wii u)

I haven't handheld gamed since the original gameboy

I've done a little research online but I am wondering if any of you have info or recommendations for

system/bundle (I shop on amazon)

should I wait till holidays?

anything I need to know about the system or current handheld gaming that would help me?

these current systems play older games from older systems? if so which? all?

anything else?
I'd recommend considering a 2DS if price is a factor for you and you don't mind a slightly less powerful system that doesn't have the 3D effect. You'd miss out on SNES virtual console, some indie titles, and Xenoblade; and some games run at a lower frame rate. But you'd only pay half the price for access to almost all of 3DS library, and every DS and DSiware game.

I personally think the DS library is far superior to the 3DS library so I also recommend focusing on both more or less equally and not just the 3DS because it's newer.

DS recommendations: Art Style Series (DSiware), Bangai-o Spirits, all three Castlevania games, Chrono Trigger, Contact, Elite Beat Agents, Final Fantasys IV and Four Heroes of Light, Ghost Trick, Hotel Dusk and Last Window (LW is an EU import), Kirby canvas Curse, Nine Nine Nine, Picross DS, Picross 3D, Radiant Historia, Theresia (really underrated adventure game, one of my favorites), and X-scape

3DS recommendations: Sega 3D classics series, Box Boy, Luigi's Mansion, Return to Popolocrois

Whichever 3DS you buy, get a pouch/case for it and absolutely get the appropriate screen protectors.

Also here's a link to the DS and 3DS games I own, in case you want to look through it.

I notice a distinct lack of Rune Factory on there. WAY better IMO (and much longer) than Fantasy Life. Personal preference there though. Also, need a Monster Hunter recommendation. Especially with the N3DS circle pad.

Just so you know, there is a pretty nice Pokemon sum moon New 3ds xl bundle coming out. You'll also notice he left off Dragon Quest IX

Oh, okay, someone on here called it an abomination and I wanted to punch them for it. Or at least they implied it by saying they hoped 11 wouldn't be an abomination like the last two.

Hey, if you don't have a bigger SD card in your 3DS, you might wanna get one. Pokémon Sun/Moon apparently takes up 3.2 GB and Nintendo has said that you cannot have the game and the demo on the same card if you just have the standard 4GB card.

For references' sake, Pokemon X and Y were about 1.7 GB.

They can keep putting Aeternoblade on sale, I'll keep not buying it.

Consider carefully the Gunvolt pack. From the looks of the truly massive amount of support, it looks like the PC version is still the definitive version of GV1, with both the butchered 8-4 shit translation by brain-damaged memers (To defend it, we got the line "You jockblocked the wrong adept, Gunvolt!") and the drier faithful translation with all the cut dialogue restored. The patched 3DS version may not include all this content and options, even if we are getting the fixed translation.

Monster Hunter Generations was listing for 27.99 for me then dropped to 25.99 but when I clicked on it it says the price changed so I don't know if it's a glitch or what.

That Hotel Dusk spiritual successor Chase Unsolved Cases Investigation Division should be out Thursday.  Judging by the JP & EU/UK prices I'm guessing around $6.99 to $7.99.

Heard dat! Generations is very tempting. Tons of free DLC makes it even harder to resist.

Sweet, day one buy at that price. Is this game the same length as the others, or is it shorter at that price?

I got the Gunvolt Striker Pack physical copy (so I could share it with my son that loves Megaman games), I've really been enjoying it but haven't even gotten to the second one yet. What's the deal with a patch? I guess I really don't pay much attention to the dialog, is there something I'm missing on this?

As far as Aeternoblade, I just watched the trailer on the eShop, they REALLY went out of their way to show some sideboob on that.

I read somewhere it's supposed to be pretty decent length but haven't found a good comparison to the other games. I'm just so happy to see the old team from Cing making adventure games again. Only thing holding me back is that I just checked my 3DS and I have $2.90 on my account! I'll have to grab an eshop card today in prep for tomorrow. It's surprising that there isn't really any hype anywhere for this. Not even from Arc System Works.

Yeah, at that price, I have to show support and grab it up day one if it's short or not. Normally I would complain of a lack of a physical release, but for a game like this, the normal statement of "we're lucky to get it at all" for sure applies here.

Now for the new Phoenix Wright game, where Capcom could have done physical, and chose not to, I'll be waiting on a sale. Especially after Dual Destinies and the lies they gave in regards to future releases and physical if sales where good enough. I'm done supporting efforts like that, at least at full price.

I just saw that appolo justice is being ported to iOS and android for sometime this winter. I'm hoping they port it to the 3ds as ive never played it.

It's not really worth that. AJ is by far the weakest game in the series.
Yeah, I'm not commenting on the quality of the release or comparing it to other games in the franchise. I'm mainly just saying if you want to play it you can get a new copy still under MSRP... and cheaper than the used price at GS. You don't have to wait for a phone port to then maybe one day possibly get ported to 3DS. Plus if you don't enjoy it that much you could always sell the physical copy off after enjoying it.

Chase Cold Case Investigations ~Distant Memories~ is available on 3DS Eshop for $5.99 now!

I still need some credit to get it... about to head out now to make it happen. :D/ :D/ :D/ :D/
