I got Super Mario Maker on Wii U and know it is far superior to the 3DS version. But I was reading that the 100 pre-made levels in the 3DS version are great on their own. Did they ever make those available for Wii U?

I know it has the 10 Mario Challenge, which includes Nintendo made levels, and the 100 Mario Challenge, which are levels by other users. Just curious about the 100 in the 3DS version.

I figured that would be the case but I need my account linked to a Switch, which I don't get until tomorrow. I'm planning to go all digital, purchased a 200 GB SD Card. L.A. Noire physical requires a 14 GB download alongside the cartridge.
I went all digital with my switch and don't regret it one bit. Eshop sales are much less often, but I grab a couple of eshop cards whenever they go on sale.

For real. This was a letdown.

I didn't plan on getting arms, but would of had it been on sale for $40 on the eshop.
If your willing to buy used, there have been several on Ebay over the last month to go for $40. My son got it for Christmas, and it's not really a great fighting game IMO. It does have the "N" creativity and polish, but that's about it.

At $20 I would say it's worth it, but anything over that is pushing it. Any fighting game that works in a 3D arena, needs a control system that is spot on(Virtual Fighters, Virtual-On, etc.). Arms while interesting, seems more suited to kids who have no idea what tight controls and proper balance mean.

I thought you could through Nintendo.com, but I would wait anyway since it’s droppin so fast and would rather own it physically since it’s the biggest game.
You can go thru the shop, but you have to have the NS linked first. Otherwise, you'll just have a 3DS/Wii U, and they won't let you buy NS games if those are the systems you own.

So the EU actually has a bunch of first party games on sale. Doesn’t sound like great prices overall but it’s something.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2018-01-04-nintendos-new-year-eshop-sale-is-a-bit-of-a-rarity-focussing-on-first-party-game-discounts

Is it like PSN where sales are completely different in the EU vs US? Or is there a chance those sales will make it over here?
Can we not just switch our region and take advantage of the sale?

Sent from my Moto G (5) Plus using Tapatalk
I think you can switch the regions, but as stated, the prices aren't normally great. Their standard retail cost for most things is always well over our prices, so even with a sale, you could end up paying more due to the exchange rates. I'm pretty sure that's why EU sees more sales then we do, as their prices are inflated to begin with.

As far as I know, those 100 levels are exclusive to the 3DS version. I doubt you'll ever see them on the Wii U, unless users make and offer them. As the 3DS version is pretty useless on the whole, and those 100 "N" created levels is really the only reason to ever own that version over the Wii U one.

Yeah, the NS is the first system I've used where all digital seems the way to go. Sadly, a lifetime of physical gaming makes that unlikely for a CAG like me, but I understand it for sure.

My son only had Odyssey for like the first month. So anytime I wanted to play, it was the only cart, along with digital demos on the system. I got used to that, and then Christmas came, and we had to start switching out carts, boy what a drag that was. LOL

Pure digital... eww. not for me.

You really don't own the copy, when Nintendo in this case, stops support for the Switch... games are gone. Sony did this with the mobile games last year, or was it 2 now?

Physical, it's mine. Nintendo/Sony/MS can't remove it from my possession. They can stop supporting it, but it will always be playable.

I still have my PSone games on disc that you can't buy digitally.

I have two purchased Apps I purchased on my Mac, removed from the App store... you can't re download them even though I "own" them. Completely removed from my purchase history, yet the app is available from the companies website (for a price)

For the most part delisted games you can still download if you purchased them, there are those you can't. Windows phones last year couldn't, I guess some recent (months later) update re enabled past purchases for delisted games.

And If I want, I can sell my copy later when the price skyrockets.. or buy it later for cheap at a yard sale etc.

I will buy some things digitally, but physical is my #1 choice. Besides I get 20% off physical anyway with GCU so I can almost always beat digital sale prices.

IMO buying digital only is a gamble. Look at all our old games we still love, and yes... people still play them. (on the old consoles etc)

I know it wont be a popular opinion.

I remember and am still bitter about Sony shutting down PS Mobile.

Both options have their advantages and drawbacks. Physical media don't require online services to be maintained and can be lent or sold at will, but if something happens to that item then it's gone. Digital downloads don't take up physical space and can be redownloaded as needed - but only for as long as the service is still running.

I prefer physical in the end, but I'm by no means afraid to download if it's the cheaper or the only option.

Yeah, I'm still bitter as well on the Sony PS Mobile, and that's probably my main reason to never go 100% digital. I'm in physical for the same reasons you mentioned, as well as the cheap digital offerings.

Some games will only ever be digital, and I'm OK with that. As I've played some great titles over the years that if I was being a snob about, I would have never tried. I also buy games on the cheap from PSN, as a few dollars for some titles is to hard to pass up. But for everyone of those titles that has been offered physically, I deleted the digital and double dipped on the physical. As I always support physical when and where I can.

I'll probably support physical until I die, as I just like having the games in my possession(ownership). But I have also gone full digital after the life of most systems has passed, and I go over to the emulation/CFW route. Nothing beats having full libraries on one device, so I do understand going digital for sure. My son loves digital, as he doesn't have to swap carts, but I buy him physical when I can, so that way we can sell games at some point if and when he no longer likes the title. He doesn't care now, but when the time comes for a new system like the NS, he'll thank me for having stuff he can get rid of for the newest offerings.

This!!! How many times are articles posted about certain games being pulled digitally like Transformers by Platinum. Not just that but if you have kids, having a physical game is awesome in the sense that once they are done playing with it, you can trade it in, sell it, or let others borrow it. My son has some games for the 3DS (physical and digital) and when he gets done with them, I let him "checkout" one game at a time from all the games I have (Mario Kart, Kirby, etc) like a game library. On trips, I let him checkout 3-4 games so he has many options. You can't do that with digital. For me, it is physical all the way!

One of the main reasons I went digital aside from the convenience of having my games installed and ready to go at a moment's notice without changing game cards, is the security. If I were to lose my switch, or it gets stolen or whatever, the physical games that were with it are gone. With digital, I would just need to sign in on my new switch, activate the console, download my games.

The two main reasons people buy physical games don't really apply to me. I'm not a collector, so that doesn't mean much, and I rarely trade or sell my games.

So that leaves ownership and longevity.

Ownership is a legit concern, but I honestly feel that by the time the servers shut down (if they do; we're headed towards a digital future so I can't imagine there won't be some form of redundancy for digital games) if I lose my games, I've already had my money's worth out of them.

As for longevity, well, physical isn't the safe haven for preservation it used to be. Games these days ship with day one patches, sometimes multiple GB. And these patches and bugfixes continue throughout a game's life. Now imagine when the servers do shut down. If it's a game you "own" but haven't played or installed in a while, you're stuck with that game as it shipped. And a lot of games these days ship with game breaking bugs.

I'm not against physical, or the people who prefer physical. Those are just my reasons I went digital, and don't regret it.

A simple form of redundancy for digital games would be steam's proposed approach; if the service were ever to shut down, you'd get to download your games stripped of drm. Pretty much how it is with music files now.

Pulled from being sold, you can still re-download them if you already own them in your library. One could argue the same thing happens with physical games; specifically those that have limited print runs. This is why you see some games with crazy resell prices.

Loss or theft is for sure a legit concern, no question. As I've known many who have had those exact issues happen at some point or another. I'm yet to have it happen to me personally, and I control my son's devices when they leave the house. So that has never been a big concern, so much as the games disappearing at some point, or a memory card becoming corrupt after some titles are gone.

Now since I've said it's never happened to me, I'll probably get my 3DS ripped off next week. LOL

Like PS Mobile... right?

Like I said, for the most part yes you can re download, but there are instances where you can no longer do so.

The devs of death squared were cool enough to warn the switch subreddit that the game is going on sale on the 8th. It's a great game. Alot of fun solo but perfect for couch co-op.

PS mobile was never really a viable gaming platform; at least on the same level of the eshop and steam.

And in my example I was referring to the games mentioned; still available for download if you have them in your library.

Like I said, physical vs digital is all about preference. Both have their pros and cons.

I thought that was pretty cool of them, so I'm grabbing it on the 8th for the switch. I normally get all my multiplatofrm games on PC but this one is a good fit for the switch.

Yeah, PS mobile was shit out of the gate, but why they felt the need to shut it down is beyond me. They could have just moved those titles over to PSN, and called it a day. I'm sure they may have had some legal hurdles, but just selling stuff to consumers digitally, with little to no effort to allow those games past a certain point was ass on Sony's part big time.

I also agree the e-shop and Steam are unlikely to end in the same way, but with digital, it's always a possibility. But we all know the risk, so no harm, no foul.

PS Mobile point is valid, and I'm still not sure what the legalities are of allowing people to redownload games when companies have lost their licenses, like the Transformers game.  But the point still stands, if the digital stores go belly up some day and you want to play a game on a fresh console with your disk, you won't be able to because you won't have patches, servers, etc.  They also lost me when they made the disk put the whole game on the HDD anyway, so it's not like you're saving space like the old days.

i have a mixture of digital and physical games on my switch. despite my anal retentiveness when it comes to my game systems/games/etc, I managed to somehow lose my Mario Kart 8 deluxe cartridge at some point to/from/at family photos for xmas...bummer :(

i rebought it digital since it was already annoying swapping cartridges for this particular game, but it still ticks me off.

if i had to guess, i must've put it in my lap while swapping out another game and then forget to put it back in that cartridge's spot. it probably fell out of the car when i got out for pictures.

food for thought... if you misplace a small, yet expensive, switch cartridge you will be sad. if you somehow forget, or have stolen, your switch case which includes your switch and a plethora of small, yet expensive, switch cartridges you will probably cry.

this assumes you take it places and/or use it as a handheld.

Think I’ve determined that level building is not for me. My kids got the Little Big Planet games and I enjoyed the campaigns and playing some other people’s levels, but didn’t do too much level design.

So when it comes to Super Mario Maker, I got it anyway thinking maybe with Mario and loving the early games that it may be different. That and it did get amazing reviews.

Alas, I still don’t seem to be getting into it. And it has much less pre-made content to play through.

Also, I’m finding most of the user content — even using ratings — is awful.

I don’t know. Maybe I’m just old, lazy and crabby. :)

When I first saw Mario Maker, I asked "where was this in my childhood?". LOL

I knew I would never build a single level, as I don't have the time, want, or desire to do it as an adult. When I was young, and got one new game maybe every 4-6 months, I would have used a game like that over and over again. Now having limited play time, something like Mario Maker isn't of much use.

I also knew the fan made levels would be fuck ing ridiculous, or not worth my time. Seeing what is created for a game like that you soon realize the finer points of proper level design. My son toys with it every now and then, but his levels suck as well. LOL And I always ask him does this look anything like what "N" has offered? It's always way to hard, or way to easy.

I guess it's like Youtube, or anything else where people do their own content. Some are doing it for hits or shock value, while others are just doing it because they can, and have no idea what makes a good video. And the last group are those who have a real talent and desire to provide decent content, but you have to search for it. As 9 of 10 of any of it is just not worth your time, and that goes for games, videos, etc.

I first saw the reality of user generated content withthe Mario vs. Donkey Kong games on DS/DSi. There was a dedicated community on GameFAQs that created a lot of great levels, many of which topped the charts among user generated. But outside of that, 95 percent of user made levels were dogshit.

Yes, Mario Kart physical save worked with digital download

As an aside, I’m considering trading Binding of Isaac physical (wanted stickers) and getting that digital if it goes on sale on eshop. This game is very pickup and play friendly which is very inconvenient to swap out zelda for a quick fix.

I changed what I considered "keepers" (Odyssey, Zelda, and MK8) to digital within the past few weeks for this reason. Having family and friends with young kids, and my own child, made me go mostly digital for Switch. Along with losing them, I was tired of the kids getting bored with a game and wanting to change every 15 minutes. Final reason was the Switch lifespan just started, I'll get at least 4yrs of solid use of the digital versions before the Switch 2.

I don't have many concerns about not having my digital content accessible. Most platforms allow you access to your purchase even if a product is pulled from sale digitally due to licensing issues.

You can also backup the data on your SD card if you're concerned about it becoming corrupt and losing your games.

FastRMX is brilliant. Really impressive even at 70". Live wipeout and this a fun twist
I'll eventually buy this game. I have Mario Kart 8 for the Wii U so I may skip deluxe for the Switch.

Any thoughts on NBA Playgrounds Enhanced Edition for the Switch? At $10, I'm thinking of buying it. I remember playing NBA Jam with my cousin all the time and am thinking this could scratch that itch.

NBA Playgrounds is worth the $10, I’m enjoying it so far. I haven’t played NBA Jam in years, but from what I do recall of it I feel NBA Playgrounds is better.

Controls are nice and it’s easy to pick up and get right into a game. There are a lot of players to unlock and quite a few tournaments to play.

So if a game isn’t in the sales history spreadsheet, does that mean it’s never been on sale? Like has Fast Racing NEO been on sale?

I'm pretty sure that it has been on sale in the past but I don't recall the price.

Puyo Puyo Tetris is on sale at Best buy for $29.99 (23.99GCU)
https://www.bestbuy.com/site/puyo-puyo-tetris-nintendo-switch/5730101.p?skuId=5730101

Mario+Rabbids is $44.99 ($35.99 GCU)
https://www.bestbuy.com/site/mario-rabbids-kingdom-battle-nintendo-switch/5909500.p?skuId=5909500

I'm thinking I'll get Puyo Puyo now and wait for Mario + Rabbids to drop further in price.

Not technically a spreadsheet I guess but the eShop Sales History Google doc at the end of the first post in this thread.
Sorry, I haven't updated it in a while, so I'll just remove it for the time being. Using CAG search in the new and old threads, would be a good way to see what's been on sale.

You can go thru the shop, but you have to have the NS linked first. Otherwise, you'll just have a 3DS/Wii U, and they won't let you buy NS games if those are the systems you own.

Change your Arms button layout up and it instantly clicks like a tightly controlled 3d arena fighter. Add in the special events and badges and new characters and they have a very good first attempt. Worth $40ish but honestly I wouldn’t begrudge anyone waiting for less.

The biggest issue is that Arms was made by the Mario Kart team, and just like MK, they don’t really do story. If Arms had any kind of actual story it’d be a lot better of a game and worth more. Outside of Badges and new Arms there’s just not really a compelling reason to keep playing single player.

The MP however is great. The party room style of casual battles is great and they mix up the modes a lot. Its very close to being a complete package. They shouldn’t have pushed the motion controls so hard and added more full story. I hope they get another shot and a bigger budget to make a complete fighting game.

Is there a set option you recommend? Or can you assign buttons as you wish? I didn't even look in to changing them, as the last few console gens, "N" has been hell bent on forcing what ever controls they wish on it's user base.

I'd for sure be willing to try it more with a better control set up, as I tried different controls(motion, pro, etc), and none of them felt natural at the factory default.

I messed around with the control layout in ARMS so much, didn't find anything I really liked and was gonna get rid of the game. But then I went ahead and tried motion controls for the hell of it, played a few games to get accustomed, and I got hooked.

I'm not much for motion controls, but there's something about the movement and different combos/ARMS attack types that feels really intuitive somehow. I'm sure they sunk a ton of time into it, but almost every other major motion-based game I've played has been clunky in one way or another, so I'm still surprised how much I ended up liking this one. I think it "clicked" when I stopped thrusting my arms around, and focused on slower wrist movement.

Just my experience, though. If you've tried the motion controls, keep at it and maybe it will click for you too

Yeah, motion controls was my first experience with the game actually. While I thought they where better than anything offered on the Wii, it was still motion controls, and I have ZERO fun using motion controls 9 out of 10 times. Aiming and shooting in Metroid or Resident Evil, is the best use by far, as then they seem second nature.

I will say that Arms seems built from the ground up with them in mind, as the game has a really slow pace in general, but punching and moving my arms even slightly is of no interest to me. So if a controller options isn't doable, it's an easy pass for me as far as long term play goes.

I saw a lot of talk about how Playstation Mobile burned a lot of people about digital downloads. Can someone elaborate about what this means? That was the one where you could play games on Vita or something?

It was basically a dead on arrivial service that let you play certain ps1 era games on your android device.

When the service was discontinued, you lost access to all your games, and the ability to download them again.

That's what a lot of people are fearing for digital storefronts now. I'm not really worried though. The same fear applies to physical games really, with day one patches, bugfixes etc. Not many games ship complete these days.

And that's why I'm concerned about the future of gaming in general. I've pretty much checked out for the most part; the only reason I got a PS4 last year is because I absolutely need to play Kingdom Hearts.

I don't know what you mean by PS1 era games though.

As much as I hate piracy this is one area that piracy is probably keeping them honest. When They shut down Digital storefronts it goes to the next level as most hackers don’t care about playing things illegally they just want to preserve their games. Look at what happened with the PlayStation 3, It was hacker free for years until they removed the other OS option. If they ever shut down the storefront Someone would release a patch To allow you to play your already downloaded games

For this reason digital doesn’t really scare me, all of my switch games are digital Because I have a one-year-old that I’m scared will eat the cartridges. And yes I know they taste bad but it doesn’t matter when he swallows them quickly.

I'm not really concerned; the more we move towards a digital future, the more that things like redundancy will be made relevant. Look at how things are with digital music now; you can buy drm free mp3s and own them for as long as you have a copy.

By ps1 era, I mean lower poly, simple games. Many not even up to the standards of mobile games.

Picked up Fast Racing NEO anyway and it’s amazing. Easily worth the $15 and probably the best Wipeout/F-Zero clone I’ve played. Definitely will pick up the $5 expansion at some point.

I'm not a fan of motion controls in most cases, but my imo these games were greatly enhanced by motion controls (though wish wii wasn't graphically underpowered) - World of Goo (pointer puzzle game), Zack and Wiki (great point and click adventure game), Silent Hill : Shattered Memories (wiimote as a flashlight), and No More Heroes (great sword swings only, no waggle for small blows)

Zack and Wiki was an amazing game, but for me, it was brought down terribly by the controls. I honestly fought the controls thru the entire game, and only didn't quit because I liked the game so much. As more complex things needed to be done, with some having time as a factor, it went from bad to worse for me.

Maybe that game could have benefited from the motion plus feature introduced later to the Wiimote, but I would honestly rate the game a "C". It could have been a B+/A- level game, but the controls killed most of the fun for me, as I fought those more than the puzzles in game. Having grown up playing point & click games with a mouse(even some with standard controls), the controls here where just about the worst I've ever used.
