Official 2009 Yard Sale Thread

went to a yard sale this morning. was able to get for a CIF $9:

An Ascii Controller (fairly beat up, will test later today). Here is a picture of what it looks like.
surpluscomputers_1946_12169307

Also got a blue Sega Game Gear (which apparently are fairly rare) and 3 games (Aladdin, Sonic 2, Sonic and Chaos).

For $9, and after seeing what that Game Gear is worth, I was happy.

Is that the EA Sports game gear? I think I remember that one. I found my old one when i was at my parents house and digging thru an old closet. I can't believe how crappy the screen is compared to modern systems.

i think so. yeah, the screen is TERRIBLE. i tested this one, and there's a teeny bit of screen interference at the top, almost like burn in, but it doesn't really effect gameplay. i just need to get an ac adapted, because i'm not wasting 6 GD batteries on this thing every 2 hours.

all i picked up after looking all day sat was 3 2600 games and a nes controller all for a buck.

night driver
home run
combat

stopped at one and i about shit my pants at how many games one sale had. after flipping through the snes games i started to notice price tags on everything. snes games were at much as 40 bucks and low as 20. same with nes and everything else. i asked the dude if everything was priced as marked and he said yah. when leaveing i told him his prices were a joke, then he told me to get the hell out.
fun.
fucking asshole.

Lol sometimes if you drop a benjamin on someone like that they will give in, I Cif'd a $100 bill to a similar seller last year, he then gave me games that he had priced for a total of $500+, and his were right at market value. I was happy.

P.S. I am starting to dislike unemployed CAG's that get their unemployment check and use it to buy out all the games in town as I am working on Fridays!!

Yea, that made me regret getting a GG instead of a GB, even if it was in color. I eventually got the battery packs but those things were huge to. I'm gonna show it to my kids when they are complaining that they don't have the newest nintendo dsi^2 or whatever in 10 years and tell them what I had to use.

Sadly I have better finds digging in my old closet then I do at garage sales. All I found this weekend was a bunch of $10 gc games like prime and whatnot. After 4 years I still am waiting for the day of a big score, unfortunately I live in a small community that is tech/geek centric and most probably throw it on ebay.

I can understand about not being able to get a big score. I never get the big finds like some of the people in this thread. I just try to be glad that I find anything at all. There is a lot of competition in my area. I usually only get a couple games each week, but every once in a while I find something like my JVC X'Eye, Vectrex, or my Laseractive. It would be nice though, if I could find the games for some of these rare systems I've picked up.

the dealer at the flea i go to wants upwards of $29-$50 for any big name SNES games like mario world, mario kart, etc. Only one that might be worth it is Mario RPG.

All cart-only. SNES systems - $69, NES - $60, sega genesis - $45

I laugh because he doesn't even sell anything. Nobody buys from him because of his prices and all I see is maybe 1 person looking.

This guy's been there for years and i'm pretty sure he still has the same NES he always had when he first started renting the booth.

dude, i'm there with you as well. quite frankly, i just got really lucky today. i've struck out for 5 straight weeks, and i haven't even been able to go out on those. i probably won't hit anything good again for at least 3 weeks or longer.

I picked up an NES+5 games, Super Smash Bros 64, and a Virtual Boy for $20 total.

The NES blinked (working on the connector right now) and the VB only had the visor, no stand or games, but had the controller and AC adapter...how does one test a VB? I ordered a cheap copy of Mario Tennis, but until then...does any startup screen come up when a game isn't inserted?

My Saturday started off somewhat nice IMO, found a boxed Commodore Vic-20 for $5
money wars
power blaster
atom smasher
bullet
alphoids
neutron zapper

Then went 10 or so sales with nothing but sports games and over priced consoles ($100 for a fat ps2 with no games , $15 for an original gameboy with no games, but came with a nice case :p ).

A boxed Atari 2600 (and a loose one) with a bunch of controllers (10+), and 158 games (1 boxed) for $20.

I also got a NES this weekend. I'm planning on just getting a new connector for the system. Cleaning the games didn't help. One thing I'm wondering if there is any way to fix the connector? I got this one and one I took out of another NES I fixed.

I don't really know anything about the virtual boy. I would say it's been around 10 years since I last saw one.

I just followed a FAQ pdf and the NES works great, two of the games didn't work, but I haven't cleaned them yet, so that's probably it.

Quite a good weekend:

Xbox with 1 controller, hookups and mostly sports games - $10

NES with 1 controller, hookups and the following games: Gotcha, MLB Baseball, Dick Tracy, Days of Thunder, DKC 2, DKC 3, TMNT 4, Super Star Wars, Yoshi's Island, Mario All Stars, NHL Stanley Cup and Super Black Bass - $15 (From the same guy as the Xbox lot)

There was also SMRPG in the NES lot, but it had bad label damage, so I gave it to my brother.

N64 with 2 controllers, hookups and Zelda OOT, Mario Kart, 1080 Snowboarding, Ken Griffey Baseball, Aerofighters Assault and Starfox 64 - $20

Mega Man 6 and Earthworm Jim 2 - $10

Red and Stimpy Quest for the Shaven Yak - $1

PS2 Silver Controller - $5

JP Yugioh Forbidden Memories - $2

Super Hydlide - $2

Turok, Quake and Clayfighter 63 1/3 (all complete) - $3

Zelda LTTP (complete), Zelda Oracle of Seasons (complete) and Zelda MM - $10

Blockbuster exclusive Resident Evil 5 and Street Fighter 4 art cells - $1

There are some rare games in there! That double ender is a good find. Sir Lancelot and Robin Hood is a little tougher combo to find, than most.

Some of the Coleco titles are hard to find. I see Bernstein bears! That is hard to find, I think it is about $100 in the guide. Ebay prices probably differ, but you have some HTF games in there. Great finds!

I know a guy who sells a lot of NESs on ebay . . . he says to take an NES game and soak it in rubbing alcohol and then shove it in and out of the connector many times . . . wipe off the cart, put on more alcohol and do it again and again and eventually it should work.

Worth a try.

einhander in the gex case - nice score. I've been looking for an Einhander forever.
Even though we're on opposite coasts I see your prices paid are comparitive to the deals I find. Is there a lot of stuff you pass on when get these single item purchases?

tons, actually. i find that people who sell multiple gaming items tend to vary wildly in their prices. for example, at the sale where i purchased Einhander, the same guy wanted $12 for a PSP Star Wars something-or-other, with no case. the twenty Genesis games (in the first pic) came from a lady that wanted $5 apiece for SNES games (common titles, at that). the Zelda CE/Bubble Bobble came from a lady that wanted $45 for an NES and a couple games (barf!). and then you get people that are practically giving stuff away (the 4 .hacks), and you just have to scratch your head.

i think to a lot of sellers, i'm buying their "junk" stuff, since it's just odds and ends, at least a lot of the time.

oh, and thanks for the kinds words, gang. i hope these past two weeks are indicative of whats in store for summer! (though life never works out that way.)

.25 each, All PS2 (except Crash 2 with lenticular cover)

State of emergency, Rainbowsix 3, Quake 3 revolution, GTA VC, GTA San Andreas original version and inside a PS2 network adapter case: Blitz 02 and GTA San Andreas GH version.

I find the same thing here. What I find particularly strange but pleasing though is how many times people will take like a 1/10 of what they are initially asking for something without hesitation, especially when I CIF.

BTW you kind of motivated me to get some pics up of my scores from the last couple of weeks. I'll try and get them up before another weekend passes.

Going out again this weekend, and since I almost never find anything, I figure I'll start asking about games. Anyone have any recent success stories or advice about trying this?
all these huge hauls motivate me to get out there and look
same!

whats a fair price for..

a dreamcast with cables + one controller? snes with cable + controller? n64 with games and controllers?

hey allyourblood, youre in san diego too right?
what area are u hitting up so we dont chase each others tracks.. lol

dc $10 is fair, $5 is better
SNES same
N64 it all depends on the games, if their crap sports games then $5-10 for everything, if its good stuff maybe $20

Friday finds!

dsc05088.jpg

NES Console w/ 2 Controllers, AC Adapter
1943
Double Dribble
Excitebike
Ice Hockey
Super Mario Bros. 3
Total: $5

Found en route to the first mapped sale of the day, taken at the price marked.

dsc05089.jpg

N2O: Nitrous Oxide: $1

Wired Xbox 360 controller: $10

Contra Shattered Soldier
Gradius III and IV
Star Wars Battlefront II
Star Wars Jedi Starfighter
PS2 Memory Card (in Battlefront case)
Total: $10

Assorted finds from a few sales. The 360 pad is probably going to be primarily for my PC, it's great to have for XNA programming. The PS2 games I found after asking at a sale, cherry picked the good ones and offered $10 (he originally asked for $5 each). Found the memory card in the Battlefront case and let the guy know (otherwise I would have felt bad) and he was fine with throwing it in.

dsc05090j.jpg

Sony PlayStation w/ Hookups, Dual Shock Controller
Medal of Honor
Total: Free!

Asked for games at a small sale and the guy brought this out for me. I didn't really need another PS1 (see last week's finds), but then he just told me to take it! Can't argue with that.

dsc05091.jpg

NES Console w/ Controller, Advantage, Zapper, Hookups
Ms. Pac-Man (Unlicensed)
Super Mario Bros. / Duck Hunt / World Class Track Meet
Super Mario Bros. 2
Super Mario Bros. 3
Tetris (Unlicensed)
Total: $10

Again, nothing super exciting, didn't have to ask and took at the price marked. Didn't have either of the unlicensed games, so that's fun.

I'm pretty sure that Tengen copy of Tetris is quite rare, I believe it got pulled from the market very quickly as Nintendo acquired the rights.

@allyourblood that's a rather impressive amount of sales you ended up finding something video game related to buy at over the last few weeks ;)
Going out again this weekend, and since I almost never find anything, I figure I'll start asking about games. Anyone have any recent success stories or advice about trying this?
When I ask for video games I ask if they are selling any old Nintendo games or any other kind of video games and I basically do this so that people know what I'm asking about as sometimes I'll get people that will reply back with "video tapes?" if I just ask for video games.

I usually get about 3 good scores a year asking about video games that makes it worth asking for them. Some CAGs seem to do better and some worse largely dependent on location.

week before last was a massive (and i mean MASSIVE) city-wide yard sale day (Saturday), and my buddy and i absolutely cleaned up -- we must have hit over 100 sales on that one day alone, not counting Sunday, or this past weekend. luckily for me, he's more interested in movies and toys, and doesn't care much for collecting games much these days. about 7-8 years ago, we were both focusing mostly on video game stuff, and we often had to split what we found, or "take turns" on who got what. nowadays, he'll find games before me, and hold them while i come over and look. the best part about it is that with two pairs of eyes, we'll often find things that the other didn't notice, and would've missed out on.

keep in mind i posted primarily video game and blu-ray finds. i also buy books, toys, odd electronics and music items. if i had added all that, you guys would've mod-alerted my post for excessive bandwidth usage.:lol:

good finds, Grue. here's to the weekend.

I've been striking out terribly lately. Our neighborhood has a big festival of garage sales (100+ over a two day period) and there wasn't anything.

If I never asked for games, I would have virtually no yard sale finds. Or a lot less, at least.

you must not look good enough........never judge a sale from a far distance!

I've seen some that from far away I'd skip but upon closer inspection look what you'll get!
I'm sure that there are a bunch of CAGs in the San Diego area, myself included.
I also saw an old friend that was selling a N64 (2 controllers, 2memcards) with Star Wars SotE, Star Wars RS, Starfox64, Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Perfect Dark, Donkey Kong 64, Diddy Kong racing, and 2 sports games for $10. CIF $8

Probably my find of the day was a n64 gameshark Pro version 3.3 for 25 cents!

I think it is desireable because it has a 25 pin cable on the back. Or people just want it beacuse it has pretty sparkles. I don't know what the port is used for...Anyone know?

Went to an advertised yard sale in South Superior, WI way out in the fuckin' boonies and the inbred twat had a shitload of NES, SNES, PS1, PS2 games all individually priced. And guess what? All similar to ebay prices. I wanted to fuckin smack her. Some good rare games like Castlevania Dracula X, complete Final Fight 2, 3, Zombies, Mega Man 2, 5, bunch of Zelda's and some other cool stuff, but I walked away. Why do some people think their shit is worth gold at yard sales? Snotknocker, do you ever run into this shit when out prowlin'?

what are estate sales? when i see on CL it looks like furniture only??

is there like a list of rare games?

im still pretty young and i dont remember any snes games other then the few that i used to have.

sorry if these questions have been asked before.

I hate living in North Atlanta. The only games I ran into today were friggin' Xbox Sports titles and Spongebob PS2 games. This was the first video game related stuff I had seen all season.

This is my third week out. I'm about to give up on Garage Sales in this area.

This area is full of families with people who play nothing but Xbox sports titles and if they do have any other games, they throw them on eBay. Can't I catch a friggin' break?!?!?

lol @ list of rare games. everyone on CAG asks that when they join, including me, but there is no list. just do research and you will eventually figure out what is rare and worth money.
