condition stuff seemingly pulled back by amazon, spoilered until I can reorg
Notice 4/14/11: New shenanigans abound! There is now a condition field for all trades - all trades are set to "Good" and may be determined to be worse than that ("Acceptable") or better ("Like New"). During the trade-in confirmation process you may choose whether to have an item in worse condition returned to you or just processed at the lower value. It does appear that this might mean that NORAM will start taking games/consoles without original packaging / manuals / etc which might be beneficial to some.

We'll see how this works out! To be added to the core FAQ after its newness wears off.

GENERAL FAQ (Updated 12/10/09)

Can I post question on this thread?
Only if you can't find the answer from below. And please let me know if it needs to be added to FAQ.

My cover art (PLATINUM HITS) differs from the pic on amazon, will my trade be accepted?
It all depends on the UPC so just turn your game around, type in the upc into the amazon search box. If the game comes up, then it's accepted regardless of cover art. Click on that result to submit your trade.

Since when did Amazon start doing trades?
The program began in 2009 and is handled by a third party merchant, NorAm International.

What kind of shipping does Amazon provide us?
Free UPS ground ---- USPS is no longer available for free. There is now also an option to provide your own shipping.

Do I have to provide my own box or envelope?
Yes.

Do all my games in the same trade-in submission have to be shipped in the same box? (updated 3/9/11)
Not necessarily - people have sent in multiple boxes for the same trade-in submission successfully. It's even possible to send half at one time and the other half at the end of the valid shipping period. However, it's probably best to always ship everything at once.

Can I send in sealed games?
Yes. They won't reject games that still have the original shrink wrap.

Can I add Delivery Confirmation and Insurance to my shipment?
For UPS Ground
It already provides you with tracking information.

I don't trust UPS ground. Can I pay for postage myself? What's the address?
Yes. You're more than welcome to do so. The address is:
NorAm International
22 Hampshire Dr
Hudson, NH 03051

(This is also an option when submitting your trades)

When do I have to send my games once I have submitted my trade order?
You have 1 week (7 days) to send your games. There have been reports of submitting trades up to 15 - 20 days late, but that is definitely ymmv. Send on time for the best chance at success!

Crap, I have one day to go before my shipment deadline, but the website states that my deadline has already passed. How do I print out a shipping label and packing slip?
Load up any existing order (if you don't have any, check your browser's history), and substitute the transaction ID for the trade-in order you need at the end of the URL.

How long does the whole trade-in process usually take?
From the time you send in your games, it may take up to 14 business days for the package to arrive. Most people usually receive their credit (Amazon GiftCard) in 3 to 5 business days, however.

How long does the "processing" status usually take?
Usually with no delay, but the longest reported days so far is 4.

My games were received on Friday (based on Delivery Confirmation), will I have to wait until Monday to receive credit?
People have received credit on a Saturday.

I do not have the manual, cover art, or original case for a game I want to trade in. Will they accept it?
While the details specifically state that original packaging is necessary, people have reported in the past that their trades were accepted despite missing some of these. This is extremely YMMV, however since some were also rejected by missing manual or cover art. On the other hand, older gen games; such as SNES, N64, and GB cartridges, normally get accepted without the original box and manual, but still YMMV.
It's always better if you trade your non-complete game as an additional credit, not part of the minimum requirement to qualify for the promo.

I do not have the manual, accessories, original box, original included game, etc for a console or accessory I want to trade in. Will they accept it? (updated 3/9/11)
The current wisdom is "probably not" - it's pretty YMMV but NorAm seems stricter than they should be on this. Your chances seem to be better for them accepting a console or accessory without the box / manual / etc if it's older generation or rare. You're more than welcome to give it a shot though if you're feeling lucky - just pack it well and include as much as you can!

My game is really beat up, what are the chances they’ll accept it?
This is YMMV. Some people have reported in the past that they sent in games in bad shape that were still accepted. Your best bet is still to trade in games in mint condition. Minor scratches are expected as these are used games.

My game is the Greatest Hits version, but the one pictured on the site isn’t. Can I still trade it in?
Unless the game in question has two separate versions that trade at different values, sending in a greatest hits version is okay.

I have a game from a limited edition bundle, will they accept it?
If the game’s cover art has a UPC barcode, they will most likely accept it. If your game's cover states "Not for Resale" and does not have a UPC barcode, the game will most likely get rejected. Some people have had their games accepted in the past, but this is YMMV.

The UPC barcode is not intact on my game's cover art, will that be accepted? (updated 3/9/11)
This is YMMV, but probably not. The UPC is all powerful within the walls of NorAm.

I sent in my games, all of which were in pristine condition with the original packaging, but they said that one game is damaged and is now being returned.
Always pack your games well. Put a lot of newspaper around your games in the box to secure them and to prevent any damages from haphazard box cutting. People in the past have requested their entire trade-in order if it’s obvious the damage wasn’t their fault, and Amazon ended up accepting the rejected game. This is YMMV as well.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
Yes. Once you click “Trade in” for a particular game, you may change the quantities. Once you submit, you can no longer change quantities on that trade-in batch.

How many multiple copies of the same game can I trade-in (updated 1/11/11)?
Maximum of 2 copies within 3 months period

I locked in X copies of a game but I now only have Y available to send. Can I just send in Y without being penalized? (updated 3/9/11)
Yes, you can always just send in a portion of your trade-in order and they'll just credit you for whatever they receive. However, the quantities you submitted for will stay locked in that instance (I think) so if you, for example, submitted for 2 copies and only sent 1, you may not be able to trade any more copies of that game for 3 months (see previous question).

Will the Trade-in of the Day TIV stay for 24 hours?
It's been reported that there is a limit (maximum # of copies) that will get the promoted TIV so lock yours.

So if I find a good flip, I can just send 2 copies of that game and not worry about Amazon accusing me of stolen merchandise?
Technically yes, but do keep in mind that other CAGs might want to participate in the current deal, and trading in a large number of the same game will definitely lower the TIV of said game. Let’s be nice to other people.

Wow, these TIVs suck (updated 3/9/11)!
Really? Hrm. While that may be true, they're often better than other comparable places. Your options of what to do with your used games are greater now than they've ever been, so feel free to shop your trades around or just sell them off on glyde/gamestaq/ebay/whatever.

What the fuck? The TIV of a game I just bought for this deal tanked! What do I do?
The TIVs on Amazon fluctuate depending on the number of trades that are submitted, and we really can’t do anything about it. The best course of action for trading in games is to lock in your trade if you already have the games or are absolutely sure that you can obtain them. You can always cancel the trade submission if you end up not finding the games.

LOCK = SUBMIT YOUR TRADE, Don't just put it in the cart.

Can I edit a submitted trade?
Nope - once upon a time you could modify trade in quantities of submitted trades, but that ability has been removed.

Can I use my credit (not the trade-in deal coupon) on items that are not video game-related?
Yes. This is the other perk for trading in games at Amazon since you're not limited to just video games.

Can I use my credit on items sold by third-party merchants on Amazon?
According to the fine print of the Amazon gift card use, some merchants are excluded. Your best bet is to try it on the checkout page of your order.

Strategy guides? I can trade in game/strategy guides? Whaaaaa?
Go to the Textbook Buyback section (http://www.amazon.com/Textbooks-Trad...ode=2205237011). You can either search on the title of a strategy guide you have to see if they'll accept it, or search for guides. The two best search strings to start with are 'prima guides' and 'bradygames'. Might try 'doublejump' if you want to trade in some of those. (Thanks eugaet)

I locked in some hilariously overvalued trade for some weird rare game/accessory/etc that I can pick up for cheap cheap cheap. They didn't accept it. What should I do? (updated 3/9/11)
The truth is that NORAM can reject things for any reason they see fit. While some people have managed to get silly things like a $200 credit for some cheerleading game, it's sooooooo YMMV that often it's not worth the effort. EXPECT REJECTION ON THINGS THAT ARE CLEARLY MISVALUED. That said, as long as you're willing to risk it, go for it!

trade-in promo related faq spoilered for history. promos no longer offered by amazon
---- TRADE-IN PROMO RELATED FAQ ---

When do I receive my coupon code for the current trade-in deal, if any?
The Terms of Service states 10 days after Amazon has accepted your games and added credit to your account, but it usually takes 2 to 3 days.

Can I do two different trade-in submissions that add up to the requirements of the current trade-in deal, if any?
No. In order to qualify for any of the trade-in promos, they have to all be in one trade-in submission. You can't add another game later on to make the minimum. However, you can adjust the quantity of the submitted game to make the minimum.

I submitted my trade-in order online, how do I know if I qualified for the current trade-in deal, if any? Is there a confirmation page or e-mail?
No. They will automatically send you a coupon code once they have accepted your shipment of games and credited your account.

Is the trade-in deal coupon in addition to the credit I will receive for my games?
Yes.

Can I trade in DVDs to take advantage of the current trade-in deal?
You may trade in DVDs to add credit to your Amazon account, but they will not be added to the amount you need to qualify for the deal.

Can I take advantage of the current trade-in (if available) promo more than once?
These deals are “One per household” unless stated otherwise. However, you may use a different Amazon account. The credit for your games will be tied to the specific account used for the trade, but the coupon codes for the deals are not.
*However, some people has confirmed that they get multiple coupon by using 1 Amazon account after doing multiple submission.
NOTE: IF YOU SEND MORE THAN 1 SUBMISSION, THE MULTIPLE COUPONS MIGHT COME IN 1 EMAIL, THE CODE IS SEPARATED BY A COMMA.

If the coupon codes aren’t tied to my account, can I use more than one coupon on my next purchase?
No. Unless stated otherwise in the promo details, these coupons cannot be combined with other offers or promotions.

So if they reject one of my games, am I disqualified from the current trade-in deal, if any?
Unfortunately yes. The best suggestion for trading in games is to trade in $10-$20 more than the minimum for the deal. By doing so, you will still qualify for the promo even if one or two games get rejected.

Can I use the trade-in deal coupon on preorders?
Yes.

What happen to the Coupon code if I cancel the preorder?
The coupon code will stay with your account. It will be applied automatically at check-out as long as the coupon is not expired.

Can I use the trade-in deal coupon when shopping from other merchants on Amazon?
No. ONLY ITEMS SOLD BY AMAZON.COM QUALIFY FOR PURCHASE WITH THE TRADE-IN COUPON. Even Amazon's other sites (Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.jp, etc.) do not participate in these trade-in deals.

Trade-in coupon Usage:
Previous promo coupons and their expiration dates (NO ACTIVE PROMOS CURRENTLY):

1st Promo - $ 50 / $75 Coupon (coupon exp: 8/31) - Game Console Only
2nd Promo - 50 % Coupon (coupon exp: 8/31) - Game and Accessories
3rd Promo - $ 30 Coupon (coupon exp: 12/31) - Game Console, Game and Accessories
4th Promo - $ 30 Coupon (coupon exp: 12/31) - Game Console Only

^^ Not surprising. Just like with my games, I hoard my PM's ;). Edit - I actually had room...

SPism - I went with Dealtree for DaH PoF. It is cash (well, PayPal anyway) vs the Best Buy gift card so that is more useful. I'm also sending a couple Beatles Rock Band there. I haven't shipped to them yet, though. Interesting, on a 3-game trade they sent me a Parcel Post label (like Gazelle), but on the 1-game trade (DaH) they sent me a regular first-class label. I'm just going to send it in a small bubble mailer and hope for the best.

I haven't heard about dealtree.. is there a thread for it? didn't see one searching... how much were they offering?

http://ebay.eztradein.com/ebay/

They use the same processor as Best Buy and Gazelle. $20 PayPal for DaH PoF.

Note I don't know much about them and have not traded there beyond submitting a couple of trades. I think I may mail DaH today though to test them out.

You have to pay for your own shipping to Dealtree and Best Buy right?

No, I just slapped on a pre-paid first-class mail label that I printed after submitting the trade. I'm going to mail it in a few minutes. They look just like Gazelle's labels - printed via Stamps.com.

I just got an email that my 2 copies of Disney Fairies: Tinkerbell and The Lost Treasure :ds: (bought from BBV sale) were rejected as "incorrect item"

Anyone else have issues with this game?

Amazon claimed one of the games I submitted was missing and so they were mailing the "item back to me" I know I didn't submit an empy case. I emailed customer service and they didn't do anything so I had them call me and fortunately the lady game me the $20 credit for the game. It's frusterating though because I know what I submitted and I know other people have had similiar problems. I just really think this trade in program is shady.

Both my Tinkerbell & Tinkerbell Lost Treasure trade-ins went through fine. 6 seperate trade packages & no issues, so I'm pretty pleased. Just wish Amazon carried the iPad now. ;)

I've had two accepted so far with no problem. Are you sure it wasn't the otherTinkerbell game that many BBV had? That one got $9 trade-in. It could have been mixed up by BBV when you bought it (other Tinketbell cart in the Lost Treasure case). Or NorAm could have just screwed up. It seems people have good luck just getting Amazon to credit them (and you will get the game back to boot).

Like this. You got the credit and you'll get something back (who knows what). It might work out to your benefit. Yeah, they screw up every so often but I've had tons of trades and only a few minor problems.

You know, it didn't even occur to me that they carried Apple products. For some reason I figured they wouldn't be allowed to (I have no idea why I thought that - just that Apple stuff isn't sold a lot of places). It would be great if I could use some of this credit on an iPad. It would be even better if I could do so before Mother's Day (for my wife) though possibly her birthday in June would work too.

I am 100% sure I bought & sent the Lost Treasure versions (red case vs. green); I guess there's a chance that BBV put in the wrong game and I missed it, but it's very unlikely as the stores I bought from did not have the other Tinkerbell game for sale that I saw.

Do you think I should complain to NorAm, or to Amazon?

Currently only bestbuy and apple stores sell the iPad will probably be that way for awhile too. Amazon has never even gotten the iPhone!

People have had luck complaining to Amazon and just getting insta-credits. Then you will get the game back to do with as you please ;).

As for the iPad - yeah, I figured it would be a while. It makes sense for them not to have the iPhone as that is a service-contract thing too. But they have iPod Touches and I didn't even know that till I looked the other day. So there's hope for the iPad once it gets more readily available. So yeah, I probably can't get it by June, but maybe Christmas then.

Cool, I'll give it a shot... thanks for the advice. :)

FWIW, I just had a package accepted and credited with a Tinkerbell Lost Treasure in it. Gotta love that game - no one wanted to buy it from the BBV B1G1 sale but it was a nice 2x trade-in (cost $5 after B1G1, traded for $10 - and still does, actually).

I also had 3 other games that I considered "iffy" in terms of disc quality accepted with no problem. That follows along with what we've seen before - they are very picky over manuals and cover art, but not so much on disc condition. Granted, the ones I sent were by no means horrible, but they had some moderate scratches.

Well, I called Amazon and got shot down by the CSR, who claimed that she couldn't credit me since the items have already been returned, and that I'd "find out what the issue is when you receive the package". Guess I'll wait until I get the package back and probably call again.

Other than that, this whole trading into Amazon thing has been pretty great. Just wish I had gotten in on the action earlier when they were offering those sweet promo coupons. ;)

So, has anyone had problems with.. off-color cases?

When I bought a used NSMB Wii, it came with a black case but it had the coverart/manual. It didn't have the Red Case usually included with NSMB Wii.

This is almost a confirmation for them still giving back items that are damaged because sending in items that do not match the trade-in list (in their opinion, not saying you did) are not eligible for return to you they claim. I almost picked up Tinker Bell to trade in but the edge of the coverart had 1-2 mm size cut in it. I probably should've just seen if something like that would fly for future reference actually. I've had a bunch of games now I haven't risked sending in that were worth much more because I didn't know if they'd send em back and then it would take 2-3 weeks, all small damage to art or questionable disc crack.

J7 - I would have picked that up. I have certainly sent some in that didn't have perfect cover art or manuals (or discs).

Funny email from Amazon tonight:
As someone who has shopped for video games at Amazon.com, you might like to know that you can trade in your games, accessories and consoles for Amazon.com gift card credit, which you can use on millions of items storewide.

You don't say!

i used the Amazon trade-in for the first time a few days ago. The day they received my package, they accepted everything and I got credited. It was very easy, and the trade-in prices were the same if not more than I could have gotten selling them on Amazon, which never happens to me with trade-ins. It's funny though...I got $4 for COD2, and the day I sent in my package, for shits and giggles, I checked the current trade in values, and COD2 was $1...I guess the values are adjust pretty drastically when they do change...
Yep, Rock Band 2 for PS3 fell from $19.50 one day to $6.50 the next .
I'm surprised it held that value that long. I traded in a copy 2 weeks ago.

Sorry for the n00b question; I know it has come up before but I can't find it nor is it specifically mentioned in the FAQ.

I had several games to trade in, and my deadline to send the games was 4/22. I printed the shipping label & packing list earlier in the week, but have not sent anything in yet. If I ship my games out Monday (which will be 4/26) will they be rejected? I don't remember how strict they are about the ship date.

Had the TIVs not tanked so badly, I'd just resubmit them all to be on the safe side. But if it doesn't look like they will be accepted this late, I'd rather go the GS route with their soon-to-end tiered special.

Check gazelle, they match but update slower than amazon and it might be possible to get the same or near same value trading with them. You can get a check/paypal/amazon credit from them, and even 5% more if you select amazon credit.

Do you guys bother getting a receipt when you drop off your package? Do those receipts actually prove you shipped it or not.
Do you guys bother getting a receipt when you drop off your package? Do those receipts actually prove you shipped it or not.
I do. I figure it may not help, but it can't hurt. It does prove that you dropped it off, but I don't know if they consider that to be the same as shipped. I would assume and hope so.

Okay I have been requesting it and the last time they said I don't need it I can just track the package by writing the # down first. But I don't do it for tracking, I've been doing it for confirmation.

Yeah, I just checked my trade-in account and it was rejected as "incorrect item." I am sure that I sent the right game to NorAm because I even took a phone cam pic of that game. I still haven't received the e-mail stating that this game was rejected. Hopefully, they are still sending it back to me in time for me to just trade it in to GS.

So, I sent in a complete :360: BRB with damaged cover art and some light scratches on the disc. Specifically, there was a ~1 inch long tear on the the lower right of the cover. They actually accepted it :)

This thread had me all worried. I traded in MW2 with tiny cracks in the middle area of the disc and a Red Faction Guerilla copy with a slash through the barcode. Both were accepted the day the were received. Guess I got lucky?

That makes me feel better about my package I'll be sending tomorrow. I've always sent games in pristine condition before this batch. These all have minor scratches, but I'm guessing they rebuff all the games before reselling, so maybe it's not that big an issue for them.

Very very lucky. More so on the cracks than the slashed bar code.

Tons of values plummeted tonight right when I was in the process of submitting a few games. I added Velvet Assassin for $9, then went to add another game. When it showed both, Velvet Assassin had dropped to $5. That is pretty damn sneaky - I've never had values drop like that while I was in the middle of submitting a trade ;). Fortunately Gazelle still gave $9 for it, so most of my stuff ended up going there.

Come to think of it, it was around 9pm Pacific meaning they probably drop at midnight Eastern.

People should just start sending everything to gazelle. This should force the noram guys to offer a promo once more. Us cags must amount to at least 40% of their trade ins.

Well, I received my games back... one of them was absolutely correct, the other one had the wrong Tinkerbell game inside. So I can see what happened with that one, but not sure why they rejected BOTH for it. Like you, I just took them to GS and got more than the original quote anyway. ;)

A quickie Gamestop -> Amazon credit mover (approx break even) for anyone interested (and fairly safe since the game is so new):

MLB 10 The Show :ps3: x 3 = 109.35 after 25OFF / EDGE / tax (for me)
Trades in at Amazon for 108.00

And the usual:
NSMB :wii: x 3 = 87.48 after 25OFF / EDGE / tax (for me)
Trades in at Amazon for 93.75

There's actually a decent number of break even moves right now. With the final days of the wonderful 25OFF coupon coming to a close and the sweet sweet BBV B1G1 sale now ended, we may be heading towards a lull where general purpose Amazon credit may be more useful to you.

And yeah, with the lack of promos looks like I too may start sending stuff in to Gazelle. It's a shame, the promos were so much fun.

How do the games come back? UPS or USPS? Also, about how long was it from the day they were rejected to the day you got them back? Anyone else who got a game returned, let me know your experience.

I had 2 of the 15 I sent rejected with the comment missing item. They were the only two I sent that were missing the manual. So in my case, they DID NOT take games without the manual. Unfortunately now I sit and watch the TIV's plummet for them.

Well, I just got notice that Rock Band 2 for PS3 was sent back as "Missing Item" which is BS since I make sure all my Amazon trades are complete. It was NOT missing a manual. So there's one that's dropped from $20 to $6 or something :bomb:.

My first ever BS experience with NorAm. Amazon will be hearing about that one.

USPS 1st class in a bubble mailer (2 DS games). Trade-in was processed Wed 4/21 and I received the games back on Sat 4/24, faster than I had expected.

I've been having quite a bit of luck with Amazon as of lately.

I traded in $81 worth of Skate 2, Dead Space, and Bad Company to Amazon and received credit within a few weeks.

Just sent in a copy of Final Fantasy XIII for $38 and God of War III for $39, but unfortunately I shipped them out on the last possible day.. at 8:30PM. So technically, it didn't ship out til the next day. Think this is going to be an issue?

Nah, I've sent things up to 2 or 3 days after the deadline and had them accepted.
I'm just wondering has anyone trade in a game missing a manual and still received full credit?
FWIW, I traded in a game without its manual and still got credit.

If you look through this thread, it seems like NorAm (Amazon) has rejected quite a few for missing manuals. IMO your best bet is probably Gazelle if you have disc + case in good condition.

It happens but is fairly rare. I've only ever sent 2 things to Amazon knowingly without manuals and they accepted one and rejected the other. This was last Fall. Send manual-less games to Gazelle, as they only care about a case and the cover art. I'm even sending a game without cover art there as the only penalty is the loss of a few bucks (down from $9 to $7).

As for the game NorAm just rejected/sent back for "missing item" I complained to Amazon via email about it saying that in the mean time the value has dropped from $19.75 to $6.50 - a loss of $13.25. Well, I just got an email back saying I was given a promo certificate worth $13.25 - awesome! So Amazon makes up for the NorAm screwup. Of course this is highly YMMV as someone else just got turned down for a similar request. It might have helped that I simply asked for the difference instead of the whole amount. I think the other guy said they told him to wait till he gets it back. In this case (with them just giving me the difference) it doesn't really matter since I assume I'll get a manual-less game back (even though I sent it with one). Of course, I guess they could send it back without the game :whistle2:k... Given that it was complete I have no idea what they think is missing.

Oh, I now remember one other time I had a game rejected. I think it was Far Cry 2 or some game that comes with a map. I sent in a copy without the manual but with the map. They sent that back but didn't explain why. I didn't even know there was a map until I found another copy with it. I resubmitted it with the map and it was accepted. That, to me, indicates they are pretty well-versed on what comes with these games. Nowhere on the case did it mention a map was included!

So how long after the status of the UPS site says delivered do people see credit from this? Do some of you see if credited the same day UPS claims delivery?

Mine have generally been next day.

Toys R Us doesn't care if you send in the manual or not, they just say it's preferred. That is if you don't mind accumulating credit for TRU.
