condition stuff seemingly pulled back by amazon, spoilered until I can reorg
Notice 4/14/11: New shenanigans abound! There is now a condition field for all trades - all trades are set to "Good" and may be determined to be worse than that ("Acceptable") or better ("Like New"). During the trade-in confirmation process you may choose whether to have an item in worse condition returned to you or just processed at the lower value. It does appear that this might mean that NORAM will start taking games/consoles without original packaging / manuals / etc which might be beneficial to some.

We'll see how this works out! To be added to the core FAQ after its newness wears off.

GENERAL FAQ (Updated 12/10/09)

Can I post question on this thread?
Only if you can't find the answer from below. And please let me know if it needs to be added to FAQ.

My cover art (PLATINUM HITS) differs from the pic on amazon, will my trade be accepted?
It all depends on the UPC so just turn your game around, type in the upc into the amazon search box. If the game comes up, then it's accepted regardless of cover art. Click on that result to submit your trade.

Since when did Amazon start doing trades?
The program began in 2009 and is handled by a third party merchant, NorAm International.

What kind of shipping does Amazon provide us?
Free UPS ground ---- USPS is no longer available for free. There is now also an option to provide your own shipping.

Do I have to provide my own box or envelope?
Yes.

Do all my games in the same trade-in submission have to be shipped in the same box? (updated 3/9/11)
Not necessarily - people have sent in multiple boxes for the same trade-in submission successfully. It's even possible to send half at one time and the other half at the end of the valid shipping period. However, it's probably best to always ship everything at once.

Can I send in sealed games?
Yes. They won't reject games that still have the original shrink wrap.

Can I add Delivery Confirmation and Insurance to my shipment?
For UPS Ground
It already provides you with tracking information.

I don't trust UPS ground. Can I pay for postage myself? What's the address?
Yes. You're more than welcome to do so. The address is:
NorAm International
22 Hampshire Dr
Hudson, NH 03051

(This is also an option when submitting your trades)

When do I have to send my games once I have submitted my trade order?
You have 1 week (7 days) to send your games. There have been reports of submitting trades up to 15 - 20 days late, but that is definitely ymmv. Send on time for the best chance at success!

Crap, I have one day to go before my shipment deadline, but the website states that my deadline has already passed. How do I print out a shipping label and packing slip?
Load up any existing order (if you don't have any, check your browser's history), and substitute the transaction ID for the trade-in order you need at the end of the URL.

How long does the whole trade-in process usually take?
From the time you send in your games, it may take up to 14 business days for the package to arrive. Most people usually receive their credit (Amazon GiftCard) in 3 to 5 business days, however.

How long does the "processing" status usually take?
Usually with no delay, but the longest reported days so far is 4.

My games were received on Friday (based on Delivery Confirmation), will I have to wait until Monday to receive credit?
People have received credit on a Saturday.

I do not have the manual, cover art, or original case for a game I want to trade in. Will they accept it?
While the details specifically state that original packaging is necessary, people have reported in the past that their trades were accepted despite missing some of these. This is extremely YMMV, however since some were also rejected by missing manual or cover art. On the other hand, older gen games; such as SNES, N64, and GB cartridges, normally get accepted without the original box and manual, but still YMMV.
It's always better if you trade your non-complete game as an additional credit, not part of the minimum requirement to qualify for the promo.

I do not have the manual, accessories, original box, original included game, etc for a console or accessory I want to trade in. Will they accept it? (updated 3/9/11)
The current wisdom is "probably not" - it's pretty YMMV but NorAm seems stricter than they should be on this. Your chances seem to be better for them accepting a console or accessory without the box / manual / etc if it's older generation or rare. You're more than welcome to give it a shot though if you're feeling lucky - just pack it well and include as much as you can!

My game is really beat up, what are the chances they’ll accept it?
This is YMMV. Some people have reported in the past that they sent in games in bad shape that were still accepted. Your best bet is still to trade in games in mint condition. Minor scratches are expected as these are used games.

My game is the Greatest Hits version, but the one pictured on the site isn’t. Can I still trade it in?
Unless the game in question has two separate versions that trade at different values, sending in a greatest hits version is okay.

I have a game from a limited edition bundle, will they accept it?
If the game’s cover art has a UPC barcode, they will most likely accept it. If your game's cover states "Not for Resale" and does not have a UPC barcode, the game will most likely get rejected. Some people have had their games accepted in the past, but this is YMMV.

The UPC barcode is not intact on my game's cover art, will that be accepted? (updated 3/9/11)
This is YMMV, but probably not. The UPC is all powerful within the walls of NorAm.

I sent in my games, all of which were in pristine condition with the original packaging, but they said that one game is damaged and is now being returned.
Always pack your games well. Put a lot of newspaper around your games in the box to secure them and to prevent any damages from haphazard box cutting. People in the past have requested their entire trade-in order if it’s obvious the damage wasn’t their fault, and Amazon ended up accepting the rejected game. This is YMMV as well.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
Yes. Once you click “Trade in” for a particular game, you may change the quantities. Once you submit, you can no longer change quantities on that trade-in batch.

How many multiple copies of the same game can I trade-in (updated 1/11/11)?
Maximum of 2 copies within 3 months period

I locked in X copies of a game but I now only have Y available to send. Can I just send in Y without being penalized? (updated 3/9/11)
Yes, you can always just send in a portion of your trade-in order and they'll just credit you for whatever they receive. However, the quantities you submitted for will stay locked in that instance (I think) so if you, for example, submitted for 2 copies and only sent 1, you may not be able to trade any more copies of that game for 3 months (see previous question).

Will the Trade-in of the Day TIV stay for 24 hours?
It's been reported that there is a limit (maximum # of copies) that will get the promoted TIV so lock yours.

So if I find a good flip, I can just send 2 copies of that game and not worry about Amazon accusing me of stolen merchandise?
Technically yes, but do keep in mind that other CAGs might want to participate in the current deal, and trading in a large number of the same game will definitely lower the TIV of said game. Let’s be nice to other people.

Wow, these TIVs suck (updated 3/9/11)!
Really? Hrm. While that may be true, they're often better than other comparable places. Your options of what to do with your used games are greater now than they've ever been, so feel free to shop your trades around or just sell them off on glyde/gamestaq/ebay/whatever.

What the fuck? The TIV of a game I just bought for this deal tanked! What do I do?
The TIVs on Amazon fluctuate depending on the number of trades that are submitted, and we really can’t do anything about it. The best course of action for trading in games is to lock in your trade if you already have the games or are absolutely sure that you can obtain them. You can always cancel the trade submission if you end up not finding the games.

LOCK = SUBMIT YOUR TRADE, Don't just put it in the cart.

Can I edit a submitted trade?
Nope - once upon a time you could modify trade in quantities of submitted trades, but that ability has been removed.

Can I use my credit (not the trade-in deal coupon) on items that are not video game-related?
Yes. This is the other perk for trading in games at Amazon since you're not limited to just video games.

Can I use my credit on items sold by third-party merchants on Amazon?
According to the fine print of the Amazon gift card use, some merchants are excluded. Your best bet is to try it on the checkout page of your order.

Strategy guides? I can trade in game/strategy guides? Whaaaaa?
Go to the Textbook Buyback section (http://www.amazon.com/Textbooks-Trad...ode=2205237011). You can either search on the title of a strategy guide you have to see if they'll accept it, or search for guides. The two best search strings to start with are 'prima guides' and 'bradygames'. Might try 'doublejump' if you want to trade in some of those. (Thanks eugaet)

I locked in some hilariously overvalued trade for some weird rare game/accessory/etc that I can pick up for cheap cheap cheap. They didn't accept it. What should I do? (updated 3/9/11)
The truth is that NORAM can reject things for any reason they see fit. While some people have managed to get silly things like a $200 credit for some cheerleading game, it's sooooooo YMMV that often it's not worth the effort. EXPECT REJECTION ON THINGS THAT ARE CLEARLY MISVALUED. That said, as long as you're willing to risk it, go for it!

trade-in promo related faq spoilered for history. promos no longer offered by amazon
---- TRADE-IN PROMO RELATED FAQ ---

When do I receive my coupon code for the current trade-in deal, if any?
The Terms of Service states 10 days after Amazon has accepted your games and added credit to your account, but it usually takes 2 to 3 days.

Can I do two different trade-in submissions that add up to the requirements of the current trade-in deal, if any?
No. In order to qualify for any of the trade-in promos, they have to all be in one trade-in submission. You can't add another game later on to make the minimum. However, you can adjust the quantity of the submitted game to make the minimum.

I submitted my trade-in order online, how do I know if I qualified for the current trade-in deal, if any? Is there a confirmation page or e-mail?
No. They will automatically send you a coupon code once they have accepted your shipment of games and credited your account.

Is the trade-in deal coupon in addition to the credit I will receive for my games?
Yes.

Can I trade in DVDs to take advantage of the current trade-in deal?
You may trade in DVDs to add credit to your Amazon account, but they will not be added to the amount you need to qualify for the deal.

Can I take advantage of the current trade-in (if available) promo more than once?
These deals are “One per household” unless stated otherwise. However, you may use a different Amazon account. The credit for your games will be tied to the specific account used for the trade, but the coupon codes for the deals are not.
*However, some people has confirmed that they get multiple coupon by using 1 Amazon account after doing multiple submission.
NOTE: IF YOU SEND MORE THAN 1 SUBMISSION, THE MULTIPLE COUPONS MIGHT COME IN 1 EMAIL, THE CODE IS SEPARATED BY A COMMA.

If the coupon codes aren’t tied to my account, can I use more than one coupon on my next purchase?
No. Unless stated otherwise in the promo details, these coupons cannot be combined with other offers or promotions.

So if they reject one of my games, am I disqualified from the current trade-in deal, if any?
Unfortunately yes. The best suggestion for trading in games is to trade in $10-$20 more than the minimum for the deal. By doing so, you will still qualify for the promo even if one or two games get rejected.

Can I use the trade-in deal coupon on preorders?
Yes.

What happen to the Coupon code if I cancel the preorder?
The coupon code will stay with your account. It will be applied automatically at check-out as long as the coupon is not expired.

Can I use the trade-in deal coupon when shopping from other merchants on Amazon?
No. ONLY ITEMS SOLD BY AMAZON.COM QUALIFY FOR PURCHASE WITH THE TRADE-IN COUPON. Even Amazon's other sites (Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.jp, etc.) do not participate in these trade-in deals.

Trade-in coupon Usage:
Previous promo coupons and their expiration dates (NO ACTIVE PROMOS CURRENTLY):

1st Promo - $ 50 / $75 Coupon (coupon exp: 8/31) - Game Console Only
2nd Promo - 50 % Coupon (coupon exp: 8/31) - Game and Accessories
3rd Promo - $ 30 Coupon (coupon exp: 12/31) - Game Console, Game and Accessories
4th Promo - $ 30 Coupon (coupon exp: 12/31) - Game Console Only
if its like 17.50 they will round it up to 18. If its like 17.25, they will round down 17. This isn't always the case though. I've seen more examples than counterexamples. However I've seen games on amazon listed for 30, but gazelle for 31. Plus the 5% bonus is always a plus.

Never seen them match DotD before though. Plus until Gazelle adds new games in their database, Amazon will have to do. Plus I always take advantage of Gazelle's slow updates whenever I see huge drops from amazon.

sorry this post was all over the place.
Probably you're looking at anywhere from late-July to early-September as to when Gazelle will update their database, per their live chat.

They are going to be losing money left and right if it takes them that long. They will lose trade ins on newer games and give too much TIV on older ones.

I remember about a month or two ago, they match Amazon's Bayonetta DoTD TIV when it was at $28. They even had it up for an extra day. So they do sometimes match the DoTD values.

Blur is pretty good right now. Used those coupons got it for $12.48 played what I want out of it and am now trading it for $27.50. I guess if you wanted to you could've gotten multiple copies but to each his own.

I sent in 4 games for trade in at Amazon and they only gave me credit for 3. When I called up Amazon they said that it appears that only 3 items were received and that I should wait 2 or 3 days and if the credit does not appear then I should call back. Anyone else have a similar experience and any advice? Thx.

Just a heads up that the Best Buy version is a different UPC and some CAGs have reported having Amazon (well, NorAm, really) reject it because of that.

I have 2 copies of ODST (one my friend is borrowing)

Locked them in for 15 ea total $30. It's so great as the price is now $6.50.

:D

They will take them no matter how many you have if you send them in sealed, or opened but with the downloadable code card still inside. Thats always worked for certain cags. I wonder if those who get rejected open them up or forget to send them with the download card.

People who process these things just scan UPCs. If they don't match, then they reject it. It's doubtful they have time to research to see if there's an alternate UPC available or if requires a downloadable card.
I sent in a sealed copy myself and it was rejected.

yeah, including a download card doesn't mean anything. If they don't know enough to know there's an alternate UPC, they certainly won't think "oh but there's a download card, it's gotta be the right one!"

Sometimes you get lucky with someone who might actually look it up and enter as the game title. But for the most part, the monkeys scan and reject. Especially at NorAM.

Trading in Singularity [360] for $28. I'm glad I only payed $40 for it (including the $20 vg credit it came with)... the game ends quickly and I feel no desire to play through it again.

-Edit-
Trade-in completed. It's funny that Amazon is offering an $18 credit for Singularity w/ Graphic Novel but $28 for Singularity by itself. I had purchased the game with the bonus graphic novel but returned the game by itself so that I could get more credit.

Then I have no idea why mine get accepted each and every time. I have never once gotten a rejection. I don't know. Maybe certain people are assigned certain accounts or who knows.

It's possible you got copies that weren't the best buy specific ones as well. My 2nd copy I got from BB apparently had the universal UPC. Who knows.

Have they slowed down the processing time? The last time I sent some games in they processed it within a couple days. Now it seems like it is taking much longer.

they're backed up from the holiday weekend it usually takes a week for them to catch up. my items where received late on the 5th and I didn't get credit till the 8th. Even then the order posted as regular games scanned first, later in the day the gameboy advance games where credited.

i bought the nba2k10 collectors edition for $30 a while ago using $20 credit. i opened up the game and played it for about an hour and traded it back to amazon for $22.50 and kept the extras. received a email saying it was received but damaged(cracked) and did not receive the credit. in trades on goozex, ebay gametz, dealtree ive probably mailed over 500 games and never got a reply saying it was damaged. last trade im ever doing with amazon

what is the most number of games that they accept per shipment? I know that 3 of each kind is the max for a specific game on a specific platform, but what about the total number sent at one time?

thanks.

I don't believe there is a limit. As long as the value is under $250 i think you're good.

Kind of sucks that they would reject it, since they don't give a UPC to compare it to - at least that I could find... I'm not going to play it. May as well trade it in and have some credit laying around for something I may want...

I was going to say "If you type the upc into amazon search , it will come up if its the "Accepted" upc." - but i just tried my rejected BB exclusive version and it comes up with Blur as result so i have no idea why it wouldn't work unless they've updated the database.

wtf? I never knew you could do this. And it's also the same blur. So why do these stupid jackasses reject it?

Please Gazelle, update your prices!

Ok, I search the TI questions but didn't find this...tell me if you heard this one yet. Submitted TF War for Cybertron. Perfect condition, only bought the game for the Jazz DLC code to Ebay. Traded in the game and now they returned it saying, "mismatched upc". how the hell do you mismatch the upc? I only printed out the one copy of the trade in sheet!! Anyone ever hear of this or come across this at all?? I have been using this for 5 months and never come across this. I still have the original copy of the game to trade in and now I am stuck with 2 copys! What the hell....

Amazon accepted my Blur (360) from Best Buy. Some other CAGs were reporting that they were rejecting it because the UPC was different but maybe they got it in their system or I just got lucky? Anyways, $27.50 from a $12.50 purchase...I'll take it! Zing!

Anyone ever have a case of them saying they deposited the gift card in your account but it never shows up? I placed an order yesterday and forgot I was supposed to have a balance and there was no mention of it when placing the order (or else I would have remembered it) and my account shows a balance of $0.00, yet the trade order page shows the 2 gift cards were deposited into my account

They mean the UPC on the back of the game art does not match the one they want.

For some titles, some publishers (e.g., Activision and Ubisoft), will give each retailer their own UPC for the initial buy-in. That means the UPC that Amazon has on record is different from the one that BB or GS might have, so when they scan it, it doesn't come up as the right game (or unrecognized UPC) in their system. I don't understand why they can't do a visual inspection and add it to their database (or maybe they do, but it's done inconsistently?).

Noram is full of either idiots or lazy people. I've sent in one of my old college textbooks twice now and they've rejected it claiming its the wrong item. Both times I've traded in textbooks I've searched by the isbn. Stupid useless employee's.
Is there any penalty if I locked in the price, but don't end up sending anything?
No, you can either cancel the trade in or it will eventually just expire.

Anyone ever have your tracking info just disappear? I sent in a package a couple of days ago, and when I checked yesterday it was enroute to the destination. When I checked today it's gone back to just "Billing Information Received". Has me a little worried.

Quick question, I'm trading in a couple of textbooks and decided to throw in a game to get some more credit. Can they all be shipped in the same box?

Yeah, I just did that and it was fine.

Is anyone's trade in account empty? When I log into my account (or the other ones I created for family members) there is absolutely no viewable history of pending trade ins or past trade ins.
I miss the promos
its been such a long time since ive seen a trade in promo from amazon--but it was dope while they had them

I just checked now and mine is fine.

By the way, I just had 4 games accepted no problem by NorAm yesterday. But none were anything that should have caused problems (all standard UPC versions and complete). But that was my first trade submission via Amazon in a long time. If Gazelle had updated their DB I would have sent the games to them, but 2 were not even listed on Gazelle and 2 others had actually gone up in value at Amazon but were still lower at Gazelle.
I dont think the promos are coming back. They were just a launch promotion to get everyone used to trading into Amazon.
They took a bath on the trade in $60 get 1/2 off any game last year with people scooping up Beatles Rock Band and MW2 Prestige kits. Yea, looks like promos are pretty much gone.

I was just thinking about this the other day. While I got the Beatles RB LE bundle for $100 (using the 50% + ECA) and thought it was a great deal at the time, I feel ripped off now . I've seen the bundle as low as $54 recently and we only played the thing for ONE day when we first got it. It hasn't been touched since then. I've been meaning to get back and play some more, but our family has lost interest in the music games in general. But yeah, in hindsight, I probably would have been better off just using it on the Demon's Souls LE or something.

has anyone every printed out more than one label thinking they needed a few boxes to ship everything, then only end up sending one box? I printed out a few, but everything fit when i tried...only sent one in, now im worried its gonna delay the process/something's gonna go wrong...anyone have this experience?

I've been trading in DVDs/games for months now, but this is the first time I've seen this. I sent one large box and it was received yesterday, but while almost everything was accepted/deposited, a handful of titles were listed as NOT YET RECEIVED even though they were in the box!

Any ideas what's going on or should do?

ive sent the last 2 games 2 days late after shipping or trade in says expire on the trade in account n they took them no probs--the only thing is obviously you have to have the shipping label n item list printed all ready as it will disappear from your trade in account-n you wont be able to print one anymore-

just saying if you need an extra day or two to pass a game-n hate having to rush trough a game cuz you have to send it in-

not the biggest help i know but just saying for those who think amazon is super strict and the game has to be sent out on or before the exact ship date they give you-

hey phantom...at least they have gone through and accepted some of your stuff!! mine was delivered to their place on Friday hasnt even been processed yet...im worried they are waiting for other boxes, which arent gonna come....getting really nervous...

Contact Amazon and request a refund for those games. You may want to wait a day or two though.

my stuff finally was accepted today...however, two things were denied-wii sports and guitar hero: world tour(wii) from the guitar bundle...neither had a upc, so I can understand why they are being returned..but no copy of wii sports will have a UPC, so i dont know why they offer to have it traded in..

Just read the 1st post , great stuff pete!

I am about to trade in 3 copies of Zelda Wind Walker (today's trade in of the day $15)

The three complete copies weigh more than the 1# printed postage before packaging! Will this be an issue?

and one copy is the best seller version but it has the same upc as the black labels ... will that be an issue?

Thanks in advance!

You should be fine on both counts I think. Despite being 1lb preprinted on the postage you could probably put an anvil in there and it would still find its way to noram. And they tend to be more concerned with UPC than the cover of the game, so no issues there. Good luck!

Question, I'm about to submit my first trade-in to Amazon, and I'm reading the shipping instructions. One of the entries includes the language: "Take care not to cover any seams or closures on the package."

Does that mean it can't overlap anywhere that's been taped closed, or? Wouldn't it have to be a pretty big box for the label not to touch any closures or seams?

Has anyone had an issue with this part?
