condition stuff seemingly pulled back by amazon, spoilered until I can reorg
Notice 4/14/11: New shenanigans abound! There is now a condition field for all trades - all trades are set to "Good" and may be determined to be worse than that ("Acceptable") or better ("Like New"). During the trade-in confirmation process you may choose whether to have an item in worse condition returned to you or just processed at the lower value. It does appear that this might mean that NORAM will start taking games/consoles without original packaging / manuals / etc which might be beneficial to some.

We'll see how this works out! To be added to the core FAQ after its newness wears off.

GENERAL FAQ (Updated 12/10/09)

Can I post question on this thread?
Only if you can't find the answer from below. And please let me know if it needs to be added to FAQ.

My cover art (PLATINUM HITS) differs from the pic on amazon, will my trade be accepted?
It all depends on the UPC so just turn your game around, type in the upc into the amazon search box. If the game comes up, then it's accepted regardless of cover art. Click on that result to submit your trade.

Since when did Amazon start doing trades?
The program began in 2009 and is handled by a third party merchant, NorAm International.

What kind of shipping does Amazon provide us?
Free UPS ground ---- USPS is no longer available for free. There is now also an option to provide your own shipping.

Do I have to provide my own box or envelope?
Yes.

Do all my games in the same trade-in submission have to be shipped in the same box? (updated 3/9/11)
Not necessarily - people have sent in multiple boxes for the same trade-in submission successfully. It's even possible to send half at one time and the other half at the end of the valid shipping period. However, it's probably best to always ship everything at once.

Can I send in sealed games?
Yes. They won't reject games that still have the original shrink wrap.

Can I add Delivery Confirmation and Insurance to my shipment?
For UPS Ground
It already provides you with tracking information.

I don't trust UPS ground. Can I pay for postage myself? What's the address?
Yes. You're more than welcome to do so. The address is:
NorAm International
22 Hampshire Dr
Hudson, NH 03051

(This is also an option when submitting your trades)

When do I have to send my games once I have submitted my trade order?
You have 1 week (7 days) to send your games. There have been reports of submitting trades up to 15 - 20 days late, but that is definitely ymmv. Send on time for the best chance at success!

Crap, I have one day to go before my shipment deadline, but the website states that my deadline has already passed. How do I print out a shipping label and packing slip?
Load up any existing order (if you don't have any, check your browser's history), and substitute the transaction ID for the trade-in order you need at the end of the URL.

How long does the whole trade-in process usually take?
From the time you send in your games, it may take up to 14 business days for the package to arrive. Most people usually receive their credit (Amazon GiftCard) in 3 to 5 business days, however.

How long does the "processing" status usually take?
Usually with no delay, but the longest reported days so far is 4.

My games were received on Friday (based on Delivery Confirmation), will I have to wait until Monday to receive credit?
People have received credit on a Saturday.

I do not have the manual, cover art, or original case for a game I want to trade in. Will they accept it?
While the details specifically state that original packaging is necessary, people have reported in the past that their trades were accepted despite missing some of these. This is extremely YMMV, however since some were also rejected by missing manual or cover art. On the other hand, older gen games; such as SNES, N64, and GB cartridges, normally get accepted without the original box and manual, but still YMMV.
It's always better if you trade your non-complete game as an additional credit, not part of the minimum requirement to qualify for the promo.

I do not have the manual, accessories, original box, original included game, etc for a console or accessory I want to trade in. Will they accept it? (updated 3/9/11)
The current wisdom is "probably not" - it's pretty YMMV but NorAm seems stricter than they should be on this. Your chances seem to be better for them accepting a console or accessory without the box / manual / etc if it's older generation or rare. You're more than welcome to give it a shot though if you're feeling lucky - just pack it well and include as much as you can!

My game is really beat up, what are the chances they’ll accept it?
This is YMMV. Some people have reported in the past that they sent in games in bad shape that were still accepted. Your best bet is still to trade in games in mint condition. Minor scratches are expected as these are used games.

My game is the Greatest Hits version, but the one pictured on the site isn’t. Can I still trade it in?
Unless the game in question has two separate versions that trade at different values, sending in a greatest hits version is okay.

I have a game from a limited edition bundle, will they accept it?
If the game’s cover art has a UPC barcode, they will most likely accept it. If your game's cover states "Not for Resale" and does not have a UPC barcode, the game will most likely get rejected. Some people have had their games accepted in the past, but this is YMMV.

The UPC barcode is not intact on my game's cover art, will that be accepted? (updated 3/9/11)
This is YMMV, but probably not. The UPC is all powerful within the walls of NorAm.

I sent in my games, all of which were in pristine condition with the original packaging, but they said that one game is damaged and is now being returned.
Always pack your games well. Put a lot of newspaper around your games in the box to secure them and to prevent any damages from haphazard box cutting. People in the past have requested their entire trade-in order if it’s obvious the damage wasn’t their fault, and Amazon ended up accepting the rejected game. This is YMMV as well.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
Yes. Once you click “Trade in” for a particular game, you may change the quantities. Once you submit, you can no longer change quantities on that trade-in batch.

How many multiple copies of the same game can I trade-in (updated 1/11/11)?
Maximum of 2 copies within 3 months period

I locked in X copies of a game but I now only have Y available to send. Can I just send in Y without being penalized? (updated 3/9/11)
Yes, you can always just send in a portion of your trade-in order and they'll just credit you for whatever they receive. However, the quantities you submitted for will stay locked in that instance (I think) so if you, for example, submitted for 2 copies and only sent 1, you may not be able to trade any more copies of that game for 3 months (see previous question).

Will the Trade-in of the Day TIV stay for 24 hours?
It's been reported that there is a limit (maximum # of copies) that will get the promoted TIV so lock yours.

So if I find a good flip, I can just send 2 copies of that game and not worry about Amazon accusing me of stolen merchandise?
Technically yes, but do keep in mind that other CAGs might want to participate in the current deal, and trading in a large number of the same game will definitely lower the TIV of said game. Let’s be nice to other people.

Wow, these TIVs suck (updated 3/9/11)!
Really? Hrm. While that may be true, they're often better than other comparable places. Your options of what to do with your used games are greater now than they've ever been, so feel free to shop your trades around or just sell them off on glyde/gamestaq/ebay/whatever.

What the fuck? The TIV of a game I just bought for this deal tanked! What do I do?
The TIVs on Amazon fluctuate depending on the number of trades that are submitted, and we really can’t do anything about it. The best course of action for trading in games is to lock in your trade if you already have the games or are absolutely sure that you can obtain them. You can always cancel the trade submission if you end up not finding the games.

LOCK = SUBMIT YOUR TRADE, Don't just put it in the cart.

Can I edit a submitted trade?
Nope - once upon a time you could modify trade in quantities of submitted trades, but that ability has been removed.

Can I use my credit (not the trade-in deal coupon) on items that are not video game-related?
Yes. This is the other perk for trading in games at Amazon since you're not limited to just video games.

Can I use my credit on items sold by third-party merchants on Amazon?
According to the fine print of the Amazon gift card use, some merchants are excluded. Your best bet is to try it on the checkout page of your order.

Strategy guides? I can trade in game/strategy guides? Whaaaaa?
Go to the Textbook Buyback section (http://www.amazon.com/Textbooks-Trad...ode=2205237011). You can either search on the title of a strategy guide you have to see if they'll accept it, or search for guides. The two best search strings to start with are 'prima guides' and 'bradygames'. Might try 'doublejump' if you want to trade in some of those. (Thanks eugaet)

I locked in some hilariously overvalued trade for some weird rare game/accessory/etc that I can pick up for cheap cheap cheap. They didn't accept it. What should I do? (updated 3/9/11)
The truth is that NORAM can reject things for any reason they see fit. While some people have managed to get silly things like a $200 credit for some cheerleading game, it's sooooooo YMMV that often it's not worth the effort. EXPECT REJECTION ON THINGS THAT ARE CLEARLY MISVALUED. That said, as long as you're willing to risk it, go for it!

trade-in promo related faq spoilered for history. promos no longer offered by amazon
---- TRADE-IN PROMO RELATED FAQ ---

When do I receive my coupon code for the current trade-in deal, if any?
The Terms of Service states 10 days after Amazon has accepted your games and added credit to your account, but it usually takes 2 to 3 days.

Can I do two different trade-in submissions that add up to the requirements of the current trade-in deal, if any?
No. In order to qualify for any of the trade-in promos, they have to all be in one trade-in submission. You can't add another game later on to make the minimum. However, you can adjust the quantity of the submitted game to make the minimum.

I submitted my trade-in order online, how do I know if I qualified for the current trade-in deal, if any? Is there a confirmation page or e-mail?
No. They will automatically send you a coupon code once they have accepted your shipment of games and credited your account.

Is the trade-in deal coupon in addition to the credit I will receive for my games?
Yes.

Can I trade in DVDs to take advantage of the current trade-in deal?
You may trade in DVDs to add credit to your Amazon account, but they will not be added to the amount you need to qualify for the deal.

Can I take advantage of the current trade-in (if available) promo more than once?
These deals are “One per household” unless stated otherwise. However, you may use a different Amazon account. The credit for your games will be tied to the specific account used for the trade, but the coupon codes for the deals are not.
*However, some people has confirmed that they get multiple coupon by using 1 Amazon account after doing multiple submission.
NOTE: IF YOU SEND MORE THAN 1 SUBMISSION, THE MULTIPLE COUPONS MIGHT COME IN 1 EMAIL, THE CODE IS SEPARATED BY A COMMA.

If the coupon codes aren’t tied to my account, can I use more than one coupon on my next purchase?
No. Unless stated otherwise in the promo details, these coupons cannot be combined with other offers or promotions.

So if they reject one of my games, am I disqualified from the current trade-in deal, if any?
Unfortunately yes. The best suggestion for trading in games is to trade in $10-$20 more than the minimum for the deal. By doing so, you will still qualify for the promo even if one or two games get rejected.

Can I use the trade-in deal coupon on preorders?
Yes.

What happen to the Coupon code if I cancel the preorder?
The coupon code will stay with your account. It will be applied automatically at check-out as long as the coupon is not expired.

Can I use the trade-in deal coupon when shopping from other merchants on Amazon?
No. ONLY ITEMS SOLD BY AMAZON.COM QUALIFY FOR PURCHASE WITH THE TRADE-IN COUPON. Even Amazon's other sites (Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.jp, etc.) do not participate in these trade-in deals.

Trade-in coupon Usage:
Previous promo coupons and their expiration dates (NO ACTIVE PROMOS CURRENTLY):

1st Promo - $ 50 / $75 Coupon (coupon exp: 8/31) - Game Console Only
2nd Promo - 50 % Coupon (coupon exp: 8/31) - Game and Accessories
3rd Promo - $ 30 Coupon (coupon exp: 12/31) - Game Console, Game and Accessories
4th Promo - $ 30 Coupon (coupon exp: 12/31) - Game Console Only
Typical crappy UPS ground service that everyone on the East coast raves about because it only takes them 1-3 days to deliver (to NorAm or Gazelle). But for us it sucks ;).
Is USPS any better?

From the Midwest it took 7 days to deliver one game and then it seems to take another 5 days to get it approved or rejected, that's the only complaint I have about the Amazon trade in service. Hopefully they accept Madden 11 :360: for $37.75 and then I can be done with trading into Amazon and back to trading in for less money but less headache to Gamestop.
Is USPS any better?
WAY better, IMO. The only thing UPS is better about is intermediate tracking, though USPS usually tracks stuff too (just that delivery confirmation is not supposed to be end-to-end tracking so it doesn't always update).

I mean, if I send stuff first-class or priority it is 2-3 days across country. Sometimes the old media mail (which you can't use any more for video games anyway) might take 9-10 days, but generally it was faster. With UPS you are guaranteed it won't be any less than 8 days from here. USPS at least makes it go faster if they are able to, whereas UPS just sits on it.

As for the Amazon/NorAm side of it, they used to process same day or next day at the worst before. But now they seem to be a bit slower. They got a package from me early this morning and no indication yet of acceptance...

Thanks for the response. Now I'll just have to see if Amazon sends back any of my games... After reading the past couple of pages of this thread, and how people have gotten their games back cracked, the case sliced, etc. I'm hoping that I don't have to go through that hassle. This is the first time I've used the Amazon trade in service so I'm hoping it goes well.

Well, you might want to consider using Gazelle. In general they match the values Amazon gives but you can get paid via PayPal or a check, or, if you want Amazon credit, you get a 5% increase.

I mailed 2 packages early last week on the same day to both places. They both got to Amazon and Gazelle today via the usual super-slow UPS. Amazon has not acknowledged receipt while Gazelle acknowledged receipt, checked in, and accepted all the games (8 or so, including one without a manual which NorAm would reject in a heartbeat) this afternoon. They won't pay for a few more days (while Amazon pays as soon as they check them in) but they are much less likely to reject stuff.

One caveat with Gazelle. Their new game TIV suck ass. Amazon blows them out of the water for anything they just added (April '10-current games). Gazelle generally has them matched on the older stuff though.

Gazelle is way less strict in terms of what they accept or reject. I've yet to have anything rejected from Gazelle (and that includes photocopies of artwork, missing manuals, scratched up discs, and cracked cases) whereas Amazon sometimes rejects perfect items due to mishandling by their employees I believe.

Yeah, I don't know what's going on with Amazon but they are behind the ball here recently.

I mailed two packages via UPS on the same day (like 2 weeks ago) to Amazon and Gazelle. They both got there last Friday. Gazelle acknowledged it on Friday afternoon, mere hours after they got it. Then they paid me via PayPal on Sunday, which was pretty impressive.

Amazon still has not acknowledged receipt (though the tracking link I click on my trade-in account page shows it being delivered Friday).

Has anyone else sent off a copy of Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Limited Edition and had it accepted? The only version they had listed for trade-in was the "regular" edition and I didn't think to check and see if the upc's matched. Sent my package off the other day and it was delivered early this morning and is yet to be received, which leads my pessimistic self to worry. Would love for someone to help ease that anxiety. Thanks.

Well, i dropped off my Metroid M on Saturday at the UPS Store and receipt shows dropoff/pickup being 9/11 - but tracking shows it as being picked up today. Shipping deadline was 12th, so this should be interesting.

Sometimes I don't get why they ping pong certain prices around, espcially on older games that aren't having any sort of price drops or sales associated with them. You'd think they would be a little more stable.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 for Wii was $10 for most of last week. Then it was the trade-in DotD a few days ago for $14. Now, today it is $4.

Dancing With The Stars We Dance was $8 2 weeks ago, then went to 25 cents for a week or so. In reaction, Gazelle set it to "recycle". I had a copy from the BBV B1G1 sale that fortunately I had locked in at Gazelle before that for $8 (and has already been accepted and paid by them). But now I see it is back up to $7 on Amazon. WTF is up with that? There is no reasonable explanation for making it go from $8 to $0.25 and then back up to $7 in the span of 1-2 weeks.

Tiger Woods in your scenario makes sense since they prob got a ton of those sent in after the DotD.
Don't know about DwtS though

grr @ amazon. My package of 3 games got there on the 10th, they sat on it til today, and now they are saying it is the incorrect item and they are sending it back to me. This is after they drop the tiv like a rock. This is bs. I sent them an email stating they are the correct items and I demand my tiv, but we will see. grrrr
Its like they can just deny anything, wait for you to get it back, so 2-3 weeks from sending it, and then the tiv has sunk it isnt worth anything anywhere. if Im lucky 2 of the games will still be sealed and can be returned, but the 3rd means im out at least $30 from this shia. grrrrr

And what was the trade-in value you sent it in for?
I had a Prince of Persia: Sands of Time for XBox 360 returned to me for being a damaged item. Funny thing is, the game was practically brand new as I literally opened it, played it, and shipped it. When I finally received it back, the game case was destroyed and the disc was all scratched up. Could have been UPS, but someone would have to literally crushed my padded bubble envelope to cause that much damage. I have sent out 100's of games in the past couple of years and never had a problem.
Send your games in a box.

Received an email stating they received and accepted my Madden 11 trade-in and under status it says "item not received." Check my account and the gift card isn't there. I get to email amazon as well ... hooray!

Good luck. I hope you get more helpful customer service reps then the two when I had a similar situation. If you read the fine print it says somewhere they can reject your trades based on the fact of they simply don't want them anymore. I sent in around 10 items at once, had 8 accepted just fine and had 2 that they were sending back because they were "incorrect items". I called and complained that they were the correct items and they said that they have the sole discretion as to whether to accept the items or not regaurdless of whether they were the right items. The real kicker was when I got the box back and only 1 of the 2 items were returned. When I called them a second time about the issue and mentioned that one of the items wasnt even returned I was asked if I could prove it was mailed to begin with. I was like wth look at your screen it shows that you guys were mailing it back for supposedly being the wrong item and now you want me to prove it was there to begin with. Then they insisted it was in the box when it was mailed back to me and I would have to contact the shipper. Such a huge pain and a waste of time that I haven't used them since.

I'v been talking to Joe, and then his boss Carlos for 45 minutes and they say they can't contact the trade in partner and they don't know what's going on and that it must be the incorrect version, even though the isbn is the exact same...
So if amazon ever gets a game that they offered too high a tiv for they can just be assholes and say it is the incorrect version and send it back.
this was for 3 copies of saints row double pack
and now i look on the site and they dont even have a tiv for that game anymore...grrr
carlos said i can just send the package right back but i dont know if i should try to return the 2 or what. grrr this is messed up how amazon acts like they dont even know the other company...

I wrote this up last month here, but I sent a box of discs to them, and about a half-dozen of the 30 I sent were listed as "not received." I never got them back, I never got credit for them. Only after a half-dozen emails to Amazon did a CSR finally give me a promotional certificate for the amount of those items -- but the situation with NorAm itself was never cleared up. From my perspective they probably lost them, or misplaced them when they were doing my trade-in.

It was enough for me to only send titles in small increments, but your story has me worried...either way, good luck.

Sounds exciting. This is the first time I've had this issue ... it doesn't make any sense to me ... my items were received and verified and yet they have not been received? WTF?

Sounds like they opened it, received it and then was like ohh I need a copy of madden 11. Whoops unreceived..Madden 11? What madden 11? Do you see a madden 11? Oh no thats my copy I brought from home so I could read the manual.

Well shit, I hope I don't have any problems like many of you here. My package was delivered yesterday and I'm waiting on a ~$40 credit. Things have always gone smoothly before, so I hope it stays the same.

Good luck to the rest of you.

finally got some chic csr to give me a $20 promo credit, but im still out 80 for my initial 100 down and out 340 on what my locked in trade in value was.
they act like they have no control over anything that goes on with trade ins. i asked to speak with anyone that had any idea about trade ins and she said she could maybe find some policy that would state price mistakes, argh.
Sounds exciting. This is the first time I've had this issue ... it doesn't make any sense to me ... my items were received and verified and yet they have not been received? WTF?
Yep, same issue here. Maybe they've just been busy with Halo Reach? It still sucks, because I need the credit ASAP for my college books- otherwise I'm going to have to spend REAL money, and/or take a hit from not getting my books on time.
phantom - how much promo credit did you get from this? i need to get more than 20 i just wanna see how high they can give...
You could always just keep sending angry e-mails and see if they give you credit in increments of 20 every time. XD

The problem you have velo is different from phantoms though. His stuff was never returned and he never got credit for them. Like I said before they can just decide they dont want to give you what they quoted for them and reject them based on that alone. If you never get your items back then you have a strong argument but the fact that you bought some stuff to flip and they rejected it doesn't mean that their going to credit you the difference. Don't get me wrong I think its incredibly shady and amazon shouldn't allow them to pull such b.s. tactics but if you get your items back technically they haven't broken the terms you agreed to when you hit submit.

Today I got an email saying they finally accepted and credited the one game I sent in about 2 weeks ago and they received on Friday. That was slower than usual for them (on the acceptance side as it used to be same day), but at least it was accepted. And I checked both my trade account and the amount of credit I have to verify that I actually got the funds - I did... So, yeah, sometimes it works ;).
Yep, same issue here. Maybe they've just been busy with Halo Reach? It still sucks, because I need the credit ASAP for my college books- otherwise I'm going to have to spend REAL money, and/or take a hit from not getting my books on time.
Someone must have hit the wrong button ... I just got another email ... exact same wording, but with "gift card deposited" this time. Meh .... come on gazelle, up your tivs!

Speak for yourself, I haven't seen anything yet. :/ I'll report back if/when I do.

I just finished a trade-in, everything went through fine except 2 items. One says that it was damaged, the other is missing UPC (both were were in perfect condition when i sent them).

How long will it take for them to send it back to me, and should i start fighting with them now or wait until i receive the items?

It's hard to fight a missing UPC (they can simply say you sent the wrong game/version) but you might be able to fight the damaged item.

Was the TIV high? Cause it might not be worth fighting. There's only so many times Amazon will cut you a break. At least that's the way I see it. I'm sure people have been able to get credit from them many many times just by being a complete PITA.

I got my games back from the other week that they had rejected. Turns out L4D2 had a teeeeeeensy tiiiiiiiny crack at the inner edge of the disc. GS took it in w/o even a question OR a refurb fee. Turns out I got 6 bucks more in trade from GS than I would have gotten at Amazon, anyway... And still got the preorder bonus armor from GS for Reach, which I bought with the credit from the NorAm returned games.

I must say, these situations that I am reading about with NorAm make me question sending anything to Amazon in the future. I never really had any trepidation about it before. Especially since these issues seem to be happening for quite a few users...

Macontosh - I got my items back on Tuesday (9/14). I SENT them on 9/2 and they received (IIRC) on 9/4.

Do what I always did, get your shit from the library!

I just recently sent in like 14 games, all but one was accepted and the gift card deposited. Interestingly enough the game that was rejected I printed off the cover for but the reason listed is the lack of manual. haha.
yeah, im never using amazon again. I have only traded in 2 times with them, and they royally fucked me over here. argh
You should still be able to return those games to BB right? Did you open them prior to sending them?
Well shit, I hope I don't have any problems like many of you here. My package was delivered yesterday and I'm waiting on a ~$40 credit. Things have always gone smoothly before, so I hope it stays the same.

Good luck to the rest of you.
Received my credit today, only 2 days after the package was delivered. Another flawless transaction. Sorry to hear this isn't the case for everyone.

I've must done 20 trades with this company without a hitch...however the past two weeks theyre giving me incorrect version and damage....on shit that ain't damaged.....whatever this is BS lately.

Gotta love NorAmazon...

The copy of F1: Formula One Championship Edition for the PS3 that I had submitted for $30 in July, and had rejected due to "damage", was accepted today for the amount of $20. The only thing I did prior to resubmitting it was to remove the "damaged" sticker from the case.

It took a few days to process after they received it, but my copy of Mario Kart DS (with a printed cover) was accepted yesterday. I'm a little apprehensive about sending more games in given the rash of problems recently. I think I'll be taking pictures of everything that I send in just in case they damage my trades.

I sent my 3 copies in still sealed and they said incorrect version which makes no sense. Im hoping they didnt open the seals so i can just return it to the store still. argh. if they didnt want us to send some games in why not cancel it before they arrive, saying damaged and incorrect versions when they obviously aren't is just fucking ignorant. and then when i talk to amazon csr's they act like they are unreachable. i cant talk to anyone that has any idea what is going on with trade-ins. grrr

I am kicking myself for not checking the tiv for strategy guides sooner I locked in the prices for several guides over the weekend I checked the values today many are listed as no longer available for trade in I will be so happy if they accept them all I am shipping them in separate bunches to lessen the chances of rejection but I think I made a mistake by sending multiples copies of some guides in the same package.

I ended up sending in a game a week after the shipping deadline and it was still accepted at the quoted value. It might be YMMV but anyone who ends up forgeting like I did can give it a shot.

they opened one of the games, argh, but the other 2 are still sealed so i can return them tomorrow. im deciding if i want to try and trade the 2 saints row games through gamestop individually to get the 3/10 bonus or just give the games to my bud that has a 360 and no money. if its worth less than 10 id rather just give a pal the games.

It goes both ways - surely Amazon/Noram could have handled it better and said wow, that was a mistake, we're sending these back to you, but I can't imagine why anyone thought the $120 TIV was ever going to materialize. Or anything remotely close.
phantom - how much promo credit did you get from this? i need to get more than 20 i just wanna see how high they can give...
I think it was $22 -- in fact I think it was actually more than the value of the items by a few dollars. It was over $20, I do know that. It automatically showed up as a promo credit when I placed another order, it wasn't deposited into the "gift card balance" so to speak.
