condition stuff seemingly pulled back by amazon, spoilered until I can reorg
Notice 4/14/11: New shenanigans abound! There is now a condition field for all trades - all trades are set to "Good" and may be determined to be worse than that ("Acceptable") or better ("Like New"). During the trade-in confirmation process you may choose whether to have an item in worse condition returned to you or just processed at the lower value. It does appear that this might mean that NORAM will start taking games/consoles without original packaging / manuals / etc which might be beneficial to some.

We'll see how this works out! To be added to the core FAQ after its newness wears off.

GENERAL FAQ (Updated 12/10/09)

Can I post question on this thread?
Only if you can't find the answer from below. And please let me know if it needs to be added to FAQ.

My cover art (PLATINUM HITS) differs from the pic on amazon, will my trade be accepted?
It all depends on the UPC so just turn your game around, type in the upc into the amazon search box. If the game comes up, then it's accepted regardless of cover art. Click on that result to submit your trade.

Since when did Amazon start doing trades?
The program began in 2009 and is handled by a third party merchant, NorAm International.

What kind of shipping does Amazon provide us?
Free UPS ground ---- USPS is no longer available for free. There is now also an option to provide your own shipping.

Do I have to provide my own box or envelope?
Yes.

Do all my games in the same trade-in submission have to be shipped in the same box? (updated 3/9/11)
Not necessarily - people have sent in multiple boxes for the same trade-in submission successfully. It's even possible to send half at one time and the other half at the end of the valid shipping period. However, it's probably best to always ship everything at once.

Can I send in sealed games?
Yes. They won't reject games that still have the original shrink wrap.

Can I add Delivery Confirmation and Insurance to my shipment?
For UPS Ground
It already provides you with tracking information.

I don't trust UPS ground. Can I pay for postage myself? What's the address?
Yes. You're more than welcome to do so. The address is:
NorAm International
22 Hampshire Dr
Hudson, NH 03051

(This is also an option when submitting your trades)

When do I have to send my games once I have submitted my trade order?
You have 1 week (7 days) to send your games. There have been reports of submitting trades up to 15 - 20 days late, but that is definitely ymmv. Send on time for the best chance at success!

Crap, I have one day to go before my shipment deadline, but the website states that my deadline has already passed. How do I print out a shipping label and packing slip?
Load up any existing order (if you don't have any, check your browser's history), and substitute the transaction ID for the trade-in order you need at the end of the URL.

How long does the whole trade-in process usually take?
From the time you send in your games, it may take up to 14 business days for the package to arrive. Most people usually receive their credit (Amazon GiftCard) in 3 to 5 business days, however.

How long does the "processing" status usually take?
Usually with no delay, but the longest reported days so far is 4.

My games were received on Friday (based on Delivery Confirmation), will I have to wait until Monday to receive credit?
People have received credit on a Saturday.

I do not have the manual, cover art, or original case for a game I want to trade in. Will they accept it?
While the details specifically state that original packaging is necessary, people have reported in the past that their trades were accepted despite missing some of these. This is extremely YMMV, however since some were also rejected by missing manual or cover art. On the other hand, older gen games; such as SNES, N64, and GB cartridges, normally get accepted without the original box and manual, but still YMMV.
It's always better if you trade your non-complete game as an additional credit, not part of the minimum requirement to qualify for the promo.

I do not have the manual, accessories, original box, original included game, etc for a console or accessory I want to trade in. Will they accept it? (updated 3/9/11)
The current wisdom is "probably not" - it's pretty YMMV but NorAm seems stricter than they should be on this. Your chances seem to be better for them accepting a console or accessory without the box / manual / etc if it's older generation or rare. You're more than welcome to give it a shot though if you're feeling lucky - just pack it well and include as much as you can!

My game is really beat up, what are the chances they’ll accept it?
This is YMMV. Some people have reported in the past that they sent in games in bad shape that were still accepted. Your best bet is still to trade in games in mint condition. Minor scratches are expected as these are used games.

My game is the Greatest Hits version, but the one pictured on the site isn’t. Can I still trade it in?
Unless the game in question has two separate versions that trade at different values, sending in a greatest hits version is okay.

I have a game from a limited edition bundle, will they accept it?
If the game’s cover art has a UPC barcode, they will most likely accept it. If your game's cover states "Not for Resale" and does not have a UPC barcode, the game will most likely get rejected. Some people have had their games accepted in the past, but this is YMMV.

The UPC barcode is not intact on my game's cover art, will that be accepted? (updated 3/9/11)
This is YMMV, but probably not. The UPC is all powerful within the walls of NorAm.

I sent in my games, all of which were in pristine condition with the original packaging, but they said that one game is damaged and is now being returned.
Always pack your games well. Put a lot of newspaper around your games in the box to secure them and to prevent any damages from haphazard box cutting. People in the past have requested their entire trade-in order if it’s obvious the damage wasn’t their fault, and Amazon ended up accepting the rejected game. This is YMMV as well.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
Yes. Once you click “Trade in” for a particular game, you may change the quantities. Once you submit, you can no longer change quantities on that trade-in batch.

How many multiple copies of the same game can I trade-in (updated 1/11/11)?
Maximum of 2 copies within 3 months period

I locked in X copies of a game but I now only have Y available to send. Can I just send in Y without being penalized? (updated 3/9/11)
Yes, you can always just send in a portion of your trade-in order and they'll just credit you for whatever they receive. However, the quantities you submitted for will stay locked in that instance (I think) so if you, for example, submitted for 2 copies and only sent 1, you may not be able to trade any more copies of that game for 3 months (see previous question).

Will the Trade-in of the Day TIV stay for 24 hours?
It's been reported that there is a limit (maximum # of copies) that will get the promoted TIV so lock yours.

So if I find a good flip, I can just send 2 copies of that game and not worry about Amazon accusing me of stolen merchandise?
Technically yes, but do keep in mind that other CAGs might want to participate in the current deal, and trading in a large number of the same game will definitely lower the TIV of said game. Let’s be nice to other people.

Wow, these TIVs suck (updated 3/9/11)!
Really? Hrm. While that may be true, they're often better than other comparable places. Your options of what to do with your used games are greater now than they've ever been, so feel free to shop your trades around or just sell them off on glyde/gamestaq/ebay/whatever.

What the fuck? The TIV of a game I just bought for this deal tanked! What do I do?
The TIVs on Amazon fluctuate depending on the number of trades that are submitted, and we really can’t do anything about it. The best course of action for trading in games is to lock in your trade if you already have the games or are absolutely sure that you can obtain them. You can always cancel the trade submission if you end up not finding the games.

LOCK = SUBMIT YOUR TRADE, Don't just put it in the cart.

Can I edit a submitted trade?
Nope - once upon a time you could modify trade in quantities of submitted trades, but that ability has been removed.

Can I use my credit (not the trade-in deal coupon) on items that are not video game-related?
Yes. This is the other perk for trading in games at Amazon since you're not limited to just video games.

Can I use my credit on items sold by third-party merchants on Amazon?
According to the fine print of the Amazon gift card use, some merchants are excluded. Your best bet is to try it on the checkout page of your order.

Strategy guides? I can trade in game/strategy guides? Whaaaaa?
Go to the Textbook Buyback section (http://www.amazon.com/Textbooks-Trad...ode=2205237011). You can either search on the title of a strategy guide you have to see if they'll accept it, or search for guides. The two best search strings to start with are 'prima guides' and 'bradygames'. Might try 'doublejump' if you want to trade in some of those. (Thanks eugaet)

I locked in some hilariously overvalued trade for some weird rare game/accessory/etc that I can pick up for cheap cheap cheap. They didn't accept it. What should I do? (updated 3/9/11)
The truth is that NORAM can reject things for any reason they see fit. While some people have managed to get silly things like a $200 credit for some cheerleading game, it's sooooooo YMMV that often it's not worth the effort. EXPECT REJECTION ON THINGS THAT ARE CLEARLY MISVALUED. That said, as long as you're willing to risk it, go for it!

trade-in promo related faq spoilered for history. promos no longer offered by amazon
---- TRADE-IN PROMO RELATED FAQ ---

When do I receive my coupon code for the current trade-in deal, if any?
The Terms of Service states 10 days after Amazon has accepted your games and added credit to your account, but it usually takes 2 to 3 days.

Can I do two different trade-in submissions that add up to the requirements of the current trade-in deal, if any?
No. In order to qualify for any of the trade-in promos, they have to all be in one trade-in submission. You can't add another game later on to make the minimum. However, you can adjust the quantity of the submitted game to make the minimum.

I submitted my trade-in order online, how do I know if I qualified for the current trade-in deal, if any? Is there a confirmation page or e-mail?
No. They will automatically send you a coupon code once they have accepted your shipment of games and credited your account.

Is the trade-in deal coupon in addition to the credit I will receive for my games?
Yes.

Can I trade in DVDs to take advantage of the current trade-in deal?
You may trade in DVDs to add credit to your Amazon account, but they will not be added to the amount you need to qualify for the deal.

Can I take advantage of the current trade-in (if available) promo more than once?
These deals are “One per household” unless stated otherwise. However, you may use a different Amazon account. The credit for your games will be tied to the specific account used for the trade, but the coupon codes for the deals are not.
*However, some people has confirmed that they get multiple coupon by using 1 Amazon account after doing multiple submission.
NOTE: IF YOU SEND MORE THAN 1 SUBMISSION, THE MULTIPLE COUPONS MIGHT COME IN 1 EMAIL, THE CODE IS SEPARATED BY A COMMA.

If the coupon codes aren’t tied to my account, can I use more than one coupon on my next purchase?
No. Unless stated otherwise in the promo details, these coupons cannot be combined with other offers or promotions.

So if they reject one of my games, am I disqualified from the current trade-in deal, if any?
Unfortunately yes. The best suggestion for trading in games is to trade in $10-$20 more than the minimum for the deal. By doing so, you will still qualify for the promo even if one or two games get rejected.

Can I use the trade-in deal coupon on preorders?
Yes.

What happen to the Coupon code if I cancel the preorder?
The coupon code will stay with your account. It will be applied automatically at check-out as long as the coupon is not expired.

Can I use the trade-in deal coupon when shopping from other merchants on Amazon?
No. ONLY ITEMS SOLD BY AMAZON.COM QUALIFY FOR PURCHASE WITH THE TRADE-IN COUPON. Even Amazon's other sites (Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.jp, etc.) do not participate in these trade-in deals.

Trade-in coupon Usage:
Previous promo coupons and their expiration dates (NO ACTIVE PROMOS CURRENTLY):

1st Promo - $ 50 / $75 Coupon (coupon exp: 8/31) - Game Console Only
2nd Promo - 50 % Coupon (coupon exp: 8/31) - Game and Accessories
3rd Promo - $ 30 Coupon (coupon exp: 12/31) - Game Console, Game and Accessories
4th Promo - $ 30 Coupon (coupon exp: 12/31) - Game Console Only

You'll be fine without it. Just make sure include the manual.
Is there an expiration date on the "gift card" that you receive at Amazon for a video game trade-in?
Im almost positive there is not, its not a promotional item like the one you'd get from a pre order special.

It doesn't have one..there is a poster though
You guys send games in an envelope then wonder how they get damaged lol..

:dunce: thanks for the tips!!!!!

...how about those that send it in a box yet their items still get damage? And the fact that we are all getting the same time of damage? AND the fact that our damaged cases have a shattered corner as if a hammer (or stomp ) was taken to it.
Have you made an obscene amount of trades on your account? If you have then I was in the same boat since I made a lot of trades and cancellations. It seems like it can't handle all the information and just attempts to load the page for a while and then you get the "we're sorry" page. For me, the easiest way I was to get around it was to use a friend's account as they have no trades on their account so it was like I started fresh, though now I do trades and cancellations sparingly now as to not repeat what happened to me previously.
what seems to trigger this problem? is it related to a lot of trades and cancellations under 1 account or a lot of trades and cancellations in a short amount of time?

i think i have a lot of trades and cancellations, but not over a short period of time. the trade in page still works for me, but i can see my trade and cancellation history is pretty large over the last year. i don't want to run into any problems.
You guys send games in an envelope then wonder how they get damaged lol..

You realize they're padded envelopes which everyone has used to mail games for years right? They've done that because when they're not dealing with a shit company like NorAm, they work.
Anyway mine was sent in a box and that didnt seem to help a bit.

NorAm returns defective things in a padded envelope. They even returned a PS2 controller I traded (because it was translucent blue, not translucent black) in a padded envelope. I shipped that one in a box, and that's how they returned it to me. The controller worked fine after it's return. Padded envelopes don't damage the items inside it. Dumbasses dropping and then stepping on them will do that, though. Same thing applies to boxes.

As for my rejected trade-in, all Amazon's customer service did was tell me that these things happen, and that NorAm has the right to reject any trade-in that does not meet their standards [especially if they break it]. Then, as an apology for my bad experience, they credited me $15, even though the trade in value was $22.50. Lame. I guess I'm through using NorAm.

I'm regretting trading in two games too amazon now all this talk about like new games being rejected and stomped on is ridiculous.

I've sent and received hundreds of games in bubble mailers throughout the years and never had something as badly damaged as you guys are describing. Every once in awhile the case might get slightly cracked somewhere but nothing where the whole thing is completely damaged.

I wonder why these Noram packages are really getting destroyed so badly when this never seems to happen under normal circumstances.

Same thing here. I sell on ebay. If any of those were damaged I would have immediately heard from customers wanting their money back. Yet it hasn't happened a single time.

The only thing is I ship USPS normally, but for NorAm it's UPS. Someone else mentioned that so it is possible it's UPS, but I'm still thinking it's NorAm. For example for my trade in the case was smashed in half with pieces loose, yet the disc was untouched. Also the other game I sent in in the same box was accepted. So to me that says it happened after the box was opened, at NorAm.

It's also odd that this crap seems to have just started happening. It didnt seem to happen (as far as I know), and now it does. So something changed it seems.

Anyway (I think) a majority still have had no issue with them. So until more people do they'll be defended here and people will keep on trading with them. That's fine with me I wouldnt expect someone with 10+ trade ins and no issues in the past to stop trading with them because of anything I say. Especially when their prices are generally very reasonable.

For anyone that has never traded with them before I hope they pay attention and at least become cautious and know what could happen and to be prepared. The only thing to really take away is DO NOT send multiple trades in a single box, if anything goes wrong Amazon will fix it with enough bitching, and NorAm sucks my balls.

I think NorAm just rejects stuff at random I got two DVDs returned that they claimed were "cracked". After an inspection, there were no cracks or scratches on the discs. The cases also were not damaged. I guess they just didn't want to take my dvds.

Well I bit today on the Amazon trade in. Never traded before but I just 100% RDR and they are offering $21.50 for it and I have the Undead DLC disc so it seemed like a no brainer. I also traded the regular Borderlands for $12.25. I am going to wait till Monday to ship them in a box so I can power through some achievements. Either way this was by far the best TIV I have seen for these games. Gamestop is giving $10 for RDR and $5 for Borderlands. Even with a power trade this is a better deal. Now I just hope they take them.

Edit: So I noticed that the cover art being displayed by the website has RDR with the GOTY awards on it and the Borderlands is listed with the Platinum Hits Cover art. Both my games are the Original cover art since I bought them at release. Any chance they get rejected? Are they really picky about this? Will the UPC codes be different? Any suggestions before mailing this off would be great.

Edit Again: Ok so I read the Op further (like I should have) and I am guessing I should be ok since the game is the same even though there is slightly different box art. If anyone has had a rejection though I would love to know.

I've traded a bunch of stuff to Amazon and never had a problem, mind you I usually use those boxes that Amazon sends out DVD's and games in, which I suppose are a bit sturdier than a padded envelope.

Latest game I traded was CoD Black Ops for $35.

Yes, for God sakes man, use a box. Why wouldn't you, they pay for shipping - so weight is not an issue. If you are really worried about it, you could add shipping insurance - but it would only be worth it if you were shipping a bunch of stuff.

I have been doing a lot of trading in with Amazon lately, and have had 2 bad experiences, both taken care of through contacting them.

The first was 3 new sealed Kinect Wall Mounts that NorAm was going to pay $25 each for (I paid $15 each). When NorAm got them, they claimed wrong item. I complained to Amazon complete with UPC's and reminded Amazon that they setup the trade-in order and would have fulfilled the trade(via gift card). They gave me $75 credit, and I sold the Wall Mounts on Ebay. Obviously satisfied.

The second was today. I had 2 games I was going to trade in x$30 each for $60 total. The deadline said to ship them by today, 2/3. When I went this morning to print my label, it said the deadline had passed - even though it had not. The new TIV was $23.25 for each, so after an Amazon online chat, they gave me $14 promo credit - which is the difference if I setup a new trade in order for the same game (RB3) today. Once again satisfied.

I did not try to scam Amazon, just reminded them to hold up their end of the deal. Even though it is through a 3rd party, they are endorsing the program by setting up and fulfilling the orders.

I've never sent more than 3 at a time, but the label lists the weight as one pound. Now, with three items in a box that was just big enough for the games and bubble wrap it came to 1.01 lbs on my scale. Do they give you a label that allows for more if you have a trade for a lot more items? I've gotten a lot of UPS packages that weighed more than the shipping weight, but not noticeably so. What do they do if you're over? Return it or bill it?

Oh, and I took picture of my last shipment showing all of my items to be pristine and I plan to continue doing so just in case Amazon stops giving out credit so easily.

Yes, any postage do gets billed at their receiving end. At least that was what my PO Clerk told me. I have never had one returned, so I believe it to be true. I assume it is the same for UPS. I have also been taking pictures for the past year of most items I ship just as a CYA thing.
I've had 1 game out of 5 that was sent in a box get the hammer/boot on spine treatment (while the disc was mint), so it makes absolutely no difference what you ship them in.

I also had 1 out of 2 that I sent in a padded envelope have the same thing happen. And that really isn't possible either unless it happened after they were opened and in NorAm's hands - so, like I said, packaging doesn't matter. It is something at NorAm's end whether intentional or not.

My trades are being delayed by weather. Ive sent in probably 50 games over the past year, always in an amazon box, and have never once had a problem. Ever.

I've sent in well over 50 without a problem either - doesn't mean anything. I've also sent in 2 packages with problems. It all depends on which sample you choose ;).

Quick question: Does NorAm/Amazon care about slipcovers for games (i.e., the cardboard cases for Fallout 3 GOTY or Dante's Inferno Divine Edition).

Edit: My gut says no, but I'd like confirmations if possible.

Thanks in advance!

I have been trading since Amazon began their trade in program and I ran into this problem around August of last year. When they still had trade in promos, I traded in a ton, but then I had a lull in my trading, and now trade in a few games a month. I think it's your total trades and cancellations and not whether you did a bunch in a short time.

frpilot, as for your trade ins, I think you have not reached the critical mass yet when it comes to the limit their software can handle;) You can tell you are heading to the I'm sorry page when at first your trade in page loads very, very slowly but after a couple more trades, you will be unable to access it all.

In my experience, they don't care. I always mean to include them and end up forgetting to slip them on the cases (done this 3 times now with games and movies).

So far my first trade experience with Amazon has been real slow. Games were delivered (according to tracking number from UPS) on Feb. 1, but still "Not Received" on Amazon's end. How long once the package arrives before they decide to open the damn thing?

The problem is with NorAm, not Amazon. To answer your question, it could be as little as 2 days or as many as 5. I just had a trade accepted yesterday for one that they received on the 31st.
My trades are being delayed by weather. Ive sent in probably 50 games over the past year, always in an amazon box, and have never once had a problem. Ever.
I've traded in around 30 -40 games myself without a problem either... always re-using an amazon box also. Perhaps that's the secret to success? :D

My credit was finally added today for all my games, even Dead Space Extraction with no manual, but still waiting on the Xbox Live Vision camera to be accepted.

Pretty stoked about the whole thing even though it took a little longer than I anticipated. Ordered Dragon Age Ultimate from EA for $26, downloaded the DLC to my HDD then traded it to Amazon for $32. So I got all the DLC and made $7 bucks. Can't beat it.

No problems with Amazon tradeins yet. Recently just flipped 3 games I got from gamestop during the recent BOGO50% to turn my GS credit into Amazon. Mailed them in bubble envelopes (but were double padded since they envelopes were too big and folded them in half) , took about a week before I got my credit.

I had only one issue. They rejected for the reason: Not for re-sale. They sent me the game back in the same condition and at no cost. Not sure why. Everything was in mint condition and actually the best condition of the three things I sent. The UPC was intact and nothing stated not for resale on it. Ended up trading to EB for within $0.50 of Amazon. It does seem to take a few days from the time they get it to the time you get your credit. I sent in some a few weeks ago and from when the UPS tracking says it was delivered it took 5 business days to get credit.

I recently received my damaged item shipped by itself in a bubble mailer. It now has a small tear in the upper left corner on the front, right through the 360 sphere. I know it didn't have that tear when I sent it in and I don't understand how it could have happened when it's behind the plastic cover. I was also notified that one of the three games I sent in a bubble mailer was reported as cracked. I can't wait to see what happened to that one. I haven't had any problems until now but I might start sending games in small boxes to avoid these issues.

Darn, according to Amazon, "ship by 2/4/11" actually means "ship before 2/4/11". I was going to print the shipping info today but it said the deadline passed. I missed out on an extra $5.50 credit. Oh well, lesson learned for the future.

I think there are instructions in the first post on how to get around that. You can actually send games out AFTER the ship by date. You just need to go to the shipping label for a trade you can still access and change the number in the URL to match the one you want to print.

Didn't know that, thanks. I'll use it for future reference.

So, my Cobalt Blue GameBoy Advance SP is not listed as an item to trade in. What would they do if I selected a different color GBASP, and sent it to them? It's just a different color, but would they send it back or adjust the value?

I don't ever play it anymore and it would make for some nice trade-in value towards the 3DS.

I hope you raise hell about that

If I want to trade in my PSP and DS to amazon, what do I need to send with the systems? I can't seem to find any requirements, besides the system, obviously. Also, where can I get shipping boxes?

Ouch. That sucks. What was the pending total for all of those trades? It had to be quite a bit.

But this is why I have rarely sent in more than 1-2 items at a time to their trade program, since I don't want to take this big of a chance of something happening.

What method of shipping did you use? UPS or USPS? I haven't had an issue as of yet with UPS delivering stuff and judging by my track record with USPS having stuff arrive damaged or taking forever I wouldn't risk it with them sending stuff to AMZ. With the way NorAm has been rejecting stuff as of late I'm leery to even send them anything anymore, especially since most of the items I've sent have been mint/complete.

I didn't want them to come back stomped to hell like some folks have reported having happened recently.

Best of luck. I would definitely open a claim with whichever shipping service you used bright and early on Monday as well as call Amazon about it.
