condition stuff seemingly pulled back by amazon, spoilered until I can reorg
Notice 4/14/11: New shenanigans abound! There is now a condition field for all trades - all trades are set to "Good" and may be determined to be worse than that ("Acceptable") or better ("Like New"). During the trade-in confirmation process you may choose whether to have an item in worse condition returned to you or just processed at the lower value. It does appear that this might mean that NORAM will start taking games/consoles without original packaging / manuals / etc which might be beneficial to some.

We'll see how this works out! To be added to the core FAQ after its newness wears off.

GENERAL FAQ (Updated 12/10/09)

Can I post question on this thread?
Only if you can't find the answer from below. And please let me know if it needs to be added to FAQ.

My cover art (PLATINUM HITS) differs from the pic on amazon, will my trade be accepted?
It all depends on the UPC so just turn your game around, type in the upc into the amazon search box. If the game comes up, then it's accepted regardless of cover art. Click on that result to submit your trade.

Since when did Amazon start doing trades?
The program began in 2009 and is handled by a third party merchant, NorAm International.

What kind of shipping does Amazon provide us?
Free UPS ground ---- USPS is no longer available for free. There is now also an option to provide your own shipping.

Do I have to provide my own box or envelope?
Yes.

Do all my games in the same trade-in submission have to be shipped in the same box? (updated 3/9/11)
Not necessarily - people have sent in multiple boxes for the same trade-in submission successfully. It's even possible to send half at one time and the other half at the end of the valid shipping period. However, it's probably best to always ship everything at once.

Can I send in sealed games?
Yes. They won't reject games that still have the original shrink wrap.

Can I add Delivery Confirmation and Insurance to my shipment?
For UPS Ground
It already provides you with tracking information.

I don't trust UPS ground. Can I pay for postage myself? What's the address?
Yes. You're more than welcome to do so. The address is:
NorAm International
22 Hampshire Dr
Hudson, NH 03051

(This is also an option when submitting your trades)

When do I have to send my games once I have submitted my trade order?
You have 1 week (7 days) to send your games. There have been reports of submitting trades up to 15 - 20 days late, but that is definitely ymmv. Send on time for the best chance at success!

Crap, I have one day to go before my shipment deadline, but the website states that my deadline has already passed. How do I print out a shipping label and packing slip?
Load up any existing order (if you don't have any, check your browser's history), and substitute the transaction ID for the trade-in order you need at the end of the URL.

How long does the whole trade-in process usually take?
From the time you send in your games, it may take up to 14 business days for the package to arrive. Most people usually receive their credit (Amazon GiftCard) in 3 to 5 business days, however.

How long does the "processing" status usually take?
Usually with no delay, but the longest reported days so far is 4.

My games were received on Friday (based on Delivery Confirmation), will I have to wait until Monday to receive credit?
People have received credit on a Saturday.

I do not have the manual, cover art, or original case for a game I want to trade in. Will they accept it?
While the details specifically state that original packaging is necessary, people have reported in the past that their trades were accepted despite missing some of these. This is extremely YMMV, however since some were also rejected by missing manual or cover art. On the other hand, older gen games; such as SNES, N64, and GB cartridges, normally get accepted without the original box and manual, but still YMMV.
It's always better if you trade your non-complete game as an additional credit, not part of the minimum requirement to qualify for the promo.

I do not have the manual, accessories, original box, original included game, etc for a console or accessory I want to trade in. Will they accept it? (updated 3/9/11)
The current wisdom is "probably not" - it's pretty YMMV but NorAm seems stricter than they should be on this. Your chances seem to be better for them accepting a console or accessory without the box / manual / etc if it's older generation or rare. You're more than welcome to give it a shot though if you're feeling lucky - just pack it well and include as much as you can!

My game is really beat up, what are the chances they’ll accept it?
This is YMMV. Some people have reported in the past that they sent in games in bad shape that were still accepted. Your best bet is still to trade in games in mint condition. Minor scratches are expected as these are used games.

My game is the Greatest Hits version, but the one pictured on the site isn’t. Can I still trade it in?
Unless the game in question has two separate versions that trade at different values, sending in a greatest hits version is okay.

I have a game from a limited edition bundle, will they accept it?
If the game’s cover art has a UPC barcode, they will most likely accept it. If your game's cover states "Not for Resale" and does not have a UPC barcode, the game will most likely get rejected. Some people have had their games accepted in the past, but this is YMMV.

The UPC barcode is not intact on my game's cover art, will that be accepted? (updated 3/9/11)
This is YMMV, but probably not. The UPC is all powerful within the walls of NorAm.

I sent in my games, all of which were in pristine condition with the original packaging, but they said that one game is damaged and is now being returned.
Always pack your games well. Put a lot of newspaper around your games in the box to secure them and to prevent any damages from haphazard box cutting. People in the past have requested their entire trade-in order if it’s obvious the damage wasn’t their fault, and Amazon ended up accepting the rejected game. This is YMMV as well.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
Yes. Once you click “Trade in” for a particular game, you may change the quantities. Once you submit, you can no longer change quantities on that trade-in batch.

How many multiple copies of the same game can I trade-in (updated 1/11/11)?
Maximum of 2 copies within 3 months period

I locked in X copies of a game but I now only have Y available to send. Can I just send in Y without being penalized? (updated 3/9/11)
Yes, you can always just send in a portion of your trade-in order and they'll just credit you for whatever they receive. However, the quantities you submitted for will stay locked in that instance (I think) so if you, for example, submitted for 2 copies and only sent 1, you may not be able to trade any more copies of that game for 3 months (see previous question).

Will the Trade-in of the Day TIV stay for 24 hours?
It's been reported that there is a limit (maximum # of copies) that will get the promoted TIV so lock yours.

So if I find a good flip, I can just send 2 copies of that game and not worry about Amazon accusing me of stolen merchandise?
Technically yes, but do keep in mind that other CAGs might want to participate in the current deal, and trading in a large number of the same game will definitely lower the TIV of said game. Let’s be nice to other people.

Wow, these TIVs suck (updated 3/9/11)!
Really? Hrm. While that may be true, they're often better than other comparable places. Your options of what to do with your used games are greater now than they've ever been, so feel free to shop your trades around or just sell them off on glyde/gamestaq/ebay/whatever.

What the fuck? The TIV of a game I just bought for this deal tanked! What do I do?
The TIVs on Amazon fluctuate depending on the number of trades that are submitted, and we really can’t do anything about it. The best course of action for trading in games is to lock in your trade if you already have the games or are absolutely sure that you can obtain them. You can always cancel the trade submission if you end up not finding the games.

LOCK = SUBMIT YOUR TRADE, Don't just put it in the cart.

Can I edit a submitted trade?
Nope - once upon a time you could modify trade in quantities of submitted trades, but that ability has been removed.

Can I use my credit (not the trade-in deal coupon) on items that are not video game-related?
Yes. This is the other perk for trading in games at Amazon since you're not limited to just video games.

Can I use my credit on items sold by third-party merchants on Amazon?
According to the fine print of the Amazon gift card use, some merchants are excluded. Your best bet is to try it on the checkout page of your order.

Strategy guides? I can trade in game/strategy guides? Whaaaaa?
Go to the Textbook Buyback section (http://www.amazon.com/Textbooks-Trad...ode=2205237011). You can either search on the title of a strategy guide you have to see if they'll accept it, or search for guides. The two best search strings to start with are 'prima guides' and 'bradygames'. Might try 'doublejump' if you want to trade in some of those. (Thanks eugaet)

I locked in some hilariously overvalued trade for some weird rare game/accessory/etc that I can pick up for cheap cheap cheap. They didn't accept it. What should I do? (updated 3/9/11)
The truth is that NORAM can reject things for any reason they see fit. While some people have managed to get silly things like a $200 credit for some cheerleading game, it's sooooooo YMMV that often it's not worth the effort. EXPECT REJECTION ON THINGS THAT ARE CLEARLY MISVALUED. That said, as long as you're willing to risk it, go for it!

trade-in promo related faq spoilered for history. promos no longer offered by amazon
---- TRADE-IN PROMO RELATED FAQ ---

When do I receive my coupon code for the current trade-in deal, if any?
The Terms of Service states 10 days after Amazon has accepted your games and added credit to your account, but it usually takes 2 to 3 days.

Can I do two different trade-in submissions that add up to the requirements of the current trade-in deal, if any?
No. In order to qualify for any of the trade-in promos, they have to all be in one trade-in submission. You can't add another game later on to make the minimum. However, you can adjust the quantity of the submitted game to make the minimum.

I submitted my trade-in order online, how do I know if I qualified for the current trade-in deal, if any? Is there a confirmation page or e-mail?
No. They will automatically send you a coupon code once they have accepted your shipment of games and credited your account.

Is the trade-in deal coupon in addition to the credit I will receive for my games?
Yes.

Can I trade in DVDs to take advantage of the current trade-in deal?
You may trade in DVDs to add credit to your Amazon account, but they will not be added to the amount you need to qualify for the deal.

Can I take advantage of the current trade-in (if available) promo more than once?
These deals are “One per household” unless stated otherwise. However, you may use a different Amazon account. The credit for your games will be tied to the specific account used for the trade, but the coupon codes for the deals are not.
*However, some people has confirmed that they get multiple coupon by using 1 Amazon account after doing multiple submission.
NOTE: IF YOU SEND MORE THAN 1 SUBMISSION, THE MULTIPLE COUPONS MIGHT COME IN 1 EMAIL, THE CODE IS SEPARATED BY A COMMA.

If the coupon codes aren’t tied to my account, can I use more than one coupon on my next purchase?
No. Unless stated otherwise in the promo details, these coupons cannot be combined with other offers or promotions.

So if they reject one of my games, am I disqualified from the current trade-in deal, if any?
Unfortunately yes. The best suggestion for trading in games is to trade in $10-$20 more than the minimum for the deal. By doing so, you will still qualify for the promo even if one or two games get rejected.

Can I use the trade-in deal coupon on preorders?
Yes.

What happen to the Coupon code if I cancel the preorder?
The coupon code will stay with your account. It will be applied automatically at check-out as long as the coupon is not expired.

Can I use the trade-in deal coupon when shopping from other merchants on Amazon?
No. ONLY ITEMS SOLD BY AMAZON.COM QUALIFY FOR PURCHASE WITH THE TRADE-IN COUPON. Even Amazon's other sites (Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.jp, etc.) do not participate in these trade-in deals.

Trade-in coupon Usage:
Previous promo coupons and their expiration dates (NO ACTIVE PROMOS CURRENTLY):

1st Promo - $ 50 / $75 Coupon (coupon exp: 8/31) - Game Console Only
2nd Promo - 50 % Coupon (coupon exp: 8/31) - Game and Accessories
3rd Promo - $ 30 Coupon (coupon exp: 12/31) - Game Console, Game and Accessories
4th Promo - $ 30 Coupon (coupon exp: 12/31) - Game Console Only
I'll admit maybe only 1 in 50 go bad but there's definitely a pattern to my handfull of rejections in the last year and a half. I know there's never been a rejection where the TIV is higher upon return than when I locked it in. I almost feel like it's a little message on their part. Something like " just saying hi bitch, we know who you are, what you are doing, and we don't like it. We are watching you."
TIVs hardly ever increase. 99% of TIVs are constantly decreasing, so the fact that in the week or two it takes to get rejected and resend the TIV goes down means little....

They take my battered books with no issues, even took a severely water damaged one for like $36 dollars.
I have done alot of trades (recently got a 50" panasonic 1080p 3D plasma with trade in credit - $7.76 out of pocket, I didn't quite have enough) and I notice the ONLY times things get rejected for me has been when the TIV tanks. This is what the trade was
2 the shoot tiv then 20.75 tiv now 8.50
2 the fight 20.75 11.25
2 mel b 14.00 7.00

I think when something goes on clearance at a national chain like target, that is flippable, they probably get a ton of these in pretty quick. I bet some supervisor type guy makes the call to "lose" a few, reject/return a few. I mean why not? ....there's no consequence to them doing so. I started a BBB complaint, but decided not to because ....1. amazon reimbursed me for this one, 2. I don't want to start anything that ruins this program for everyone.

Now I know where these AWD games listed as acceptable - may not contain case, art work, or manual, come from. We all know they don't accept them that way, but I've seen a few games offered in this condition. I will watch for my "missing" discs just for fun.
I agree with your theory. I always thought the same thing.

BTW, how do you like the TV you bought? I've been thinking about buying the same one ever since you mentioned it on this thread a while back. I'm trying to build up my credit so I dont have to pay too much out of pocket.

byway - the BBB asks if you'd be willing to speak to the attorney general or some other enforcement agency and or the media about your complaint. I guess if it's serious enough they might hand it off for investigation or prosecution? Stealing and fraud seem pretty serious.

fuji - you must be a novice or stupid if you don't realize that amazon's TIVs cycle. Sometimes it's a tide lifting all boats like during the recent Gamestop 50% promo. TIVs in general went up and were pretty good. Around Christmas time last year was also a good time to get rid of games. Sometimes individual games increase in value for various reasons. Here's some examples: 1. sequels - Mass Effect popped when Mass Effect 2 was released cause people wanted to play the first one and continue with their individual saved game scenario. 2. Supply/demand equillibrium - NSMB 's TIV went up and down, topping out at $30-$40 for a long time after release because demand was there for that title. Noram would increase the TIV, take a bunch of them in, and lower it until they sold what they had and needed more supply. 3. (this is the most profitable scenario) It's when someone lists a game on Amazon Marketplace at a ridiculously high price and no other copies are available for cheaper. An automated pricing program then sets a high TIV based on the lowest available price (remember F1 formula 1 2009 wii, My Horse and Me, Rocky Balboa, Lets draw, Bella sara, LIPS classic party -game only- tiv 90.75, Bleach: 3rd Phantom DS tiv 69.75...I do!$$$). These high TIVs always drop, sometimes slowly, sometime by 90+% within 24hrs LOL... fuj you ought not talk about things which you know little about...haha. I had 3K+ in trade in credit on my accounts when I bought the TV so I probably have a little more experience at this than you just selling a few school books and target games.

sonic - the TV is absolutely amazing! The colors in Toy story 3 and Meet the Robinsons blurays were shocking. I've had to get used to sitting farther away from the TV cause Reach online multiplayer was difficult to play from my normal seat . I'm not used to such a large screen while gaming. I am Extremely satisfied! I'm just waiting for 3D glasses and movies to get cheaper...hopefully by this Christmas.

That's awesome. I'm guess I'm going to try to get this TV if the price stays the same. I could supposedly get around $300 amazon credit for trading in my textbooks. Hopefully those TIVs hold and I could put it towards the TV. We'll see.

I hope your textbook trading in experience isn't like mine. I just sent in a bunch of law books, pretty much all got rejected for damage...which doesn't make sense. I'm super anal about condition of my books (I don't highlight, take notes, or bend pages) and a couple of them hadn't even been used. Was utterly bizarre and kinda pissed me off.

Just traded some games and dsi. They said the dsi was damaged in shipping so they are sending it back. I complained and they gave me the credit anyways. Sames day service. Amazing!
I sent a trade in last week and the status says out for delivery 2 days ago, is it lost, should I be worried.
Yep. You're screwed. Hope it wasn't a big trade.

Well my first Ps3 trade in base was accepted. The second was showing delivered on the 23rd but now shows out for delivery. Hope it corrects itself.
Was it a mistake that they offered me 130 dollars for my Xbox 360 120gb elite trade in?

The 250gb Xbox 360 slim is going for 127.
I sent mine in for the same value and just got an email today that it was being rejected for being cracked. I know that it is BS because i packaged it perfectly with bubble rap and everything. It was perfect condition when i sent it out. So i'm guessing that they did not want to pay that price and just rejected it. But if it comes back and is damaged im going to give Amazon a call to try to get something done about it.

don't know if this can be answered but i'll give it a shot. i'm trading some games and books and for 1 book it's saying i can only send 1 copy(i've got 2). if i were to make a separate trade 2nd copy alone and ship it in the same box would they accept it? thx in advance

edit: okay answered my own question. it's because i've traded multiple of that book already. thx

did you make sure everything was included?

I included everything my xbox 360 came with including all bags where the accesories are and all manuals...they arent even opened. and even the little bag where the xbox 360 goes in.

My theory on "some" of the rejections is not due to trade in values dropping but the fact that they may have received more trade in offers for a certain game/item than they needed/wanted and those they do not need after a certain amount get sent back. And the trade in value dropping has more to do with trying to stop consumers from sending in any more of a certain game/item. Example: A games trade in value is $30, consumers send in their item, Noram's trade in queue gets filled and then they drop the value to $10 so consumers will know it's a sh!tty offer and not send it in.

I know some of you have used this in the past, so just wanted to give out a general notice. I've updated my tracker.

I was a little behind, but now it boasts a new overhaul as well as tracking 3DS, Mac, and PC trade-ins along with a couple of other new features. There's also search if you're looking for a particular title (especially handy on your phone).

If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to pm me directly! :)

I sent mine back with just the System, The system stylus, the fat 2nd stylus, & charger.

I traded in a 20gb launch model Xbox 360, included everything, and it was rejected because I did not include TWO controllers.

What the fuck?

I tried to chat with Amazon customer support but they said it's up to the merchant. It doesn't say anywhere on the trade-in page that you need to include two controllers. I've only ever had one controller. I traded in everything the system came with.

What the fuck?

seriously, greatest thing ever. thanks so much for your contribution - I know it's helped a lot of us out while on the go. please let me know if there's anything we can do to help you out in return.

They're offering $25 credit on Donkey Kong Country for SNES. I've got 3 copies.... figure it's worth a shot. OP isn't really confidence inspiring but $75 is too good to pass up.

Anyone tried cart only trades recently willing to give me a confidence boost?

When it comes video games that contain softcover cardboard boxes like Nintendo games(Nes, Snes, 64, gameboy) or systems you just need the bare bones. In general, most people throw them out due to frailty and size. I bet Amazon don't expect them. I sent several cart games and none of them got rejected even if the credit was insane. I got $20 for Dragon Warrior 3 for color and $25 pokemon stadium 2(both cart only).

No problem, just glad I could contribute back to the community. I still have a little bit of work to do, but wanted to get some of the changes out to include 3DS stuff.

About the only help I need is if someone has a WebOS/Android phone to see how the mobile version looks.

Your page is super useful, thanks! The site loads up well at readable sizes by default on the Android browser. The item name/prices line up perfectly in landscape mode on my tiny HTC Hero. Here's some screenshots from the Hero: http://evilpotato.imgur.com/ativ_scurker_site_on_mobile_phone

I remember Windows Mobile 6.5's default browser had a terrible time with your site, either the font sizes were way off and required adjusting, or the item name/prices were separated due to a weird way the browser was handling the page formatting. This was months ago on a HTC Touch Pro 2.

I was not aware they take PC game trade ins. interesting.

I sent them a big trade in the toher day, luckily I only live like 2 hours from their facility so UPS gets it there the next morning. Still waiting for them to credit me though although Im scared shitless of them sending stuff back. I've only had them reject 1 thing before, which was Guitar Hero:Smash Hits. I don't know why they did, I bought the copy from Amazon but w/e.
If I initiated a trade and then cancelled, does that count towards the max. limit of 2 (same title) per quarter?
no, only actual credits

just got off from chat support about my missing/lost packages and they said they would credit my account.

it's been 1/2 an hour, how long does it usually take? he said he will send me an email and credit my account after the chat window closed. i got the standard "was i helpful in your problem" email, but my account hasn't been credited yet.

The credit can take a few days, they should tell you this when they issue it. Also should say so in the confirmation you receive.

I'd give it a while yet.

I just got an e-mail saying that my Dreamcast trade-in had been rejected because it was `Incomplete' due to a missing accessory. I sent in the console, a controller, power cord and A/V cables, so I'm not sure just what else they were expecting (a VMU? it's not like the system came with one in the first place!).

If you traded-in a Dreamcast recently, how has yours gone? and what did you send in with it?

Update: I e-mailed customer support and according to them it was missing the controller. Huh? I definitely sent one in with it. Very strange. It'll be interesting to see just what I end up getting back.

we are talking about issuing credit for lost trade-ins packages right (not video game promo credit for pre-ordering games)?

all i got was the standard email after contacting customer support (see below). i didn't receive a subsequent email regarding a confirmation of our chat or the amounts to be credited or how long it may take. the online customer support guy also said he will credit and left in a hurry without asking "may i help you with anything else?" etc.

Greetings from Amazon.com,

Thank you for your recent inquiry. Did I solve your problem?

I'm talking about credit in any form, refunds etc. I've always gotten a notifcation and it's taken a few days.

Give it 3-5 days at least.

frpilot - That has happened to me before, where they never issued the credit. I just emailed them saying I was never credited the amount promised by "mohindar"...etc. or what ever the guy's/gal's name was that helped you the 1st time. That fixed it for me.

Just a couple updates about my other trade issues...

Some on else posted on amazon that he also had his The Fight PS3 game rejected as "missing disc". I guess NORAM received too many of them because of target clearance.

I finally got amazon to credit me for all 4 lost trades they previously refused to pay for. I had to call UPS and put tracers on all the lost packages. It took more than a week but upon following up with them, they said one trade had a damaged label so they stuck another one on the envelope and resent it. They gave me the new tracking number which showed it being received by noram and signed for by some guy who worked there. The other 3 were lost and claims paid to NORAM. The "claim paid" status showed up when tracking the label. I guess that why amazon paid me.

All the lost packages were those small bubble envelopes containg 1 or 2 games. I've never lost a box. The UPS customer service guy said those small envelopes have an increased risk of being gobbled up by the conveyor belt or falling through a crack somewhere. He suggested I use a larger envelope or a box. I believe he may be right...I just realized another single game trade in is missing.

If I remember correctly, the last time Gamestop had a 50% bonus trade-in promotion going on, Amazon also matched it (or at least increased their TIVs a bit to be competitive). Is there a way to "report a higher TIV" to Amazon, or do we have to just wait and see if Amazon will match Gamestop's upcoming 50% bonus TIV on their own?

Edit: Disregard; apparently Gamestop is not offering 50% trade-in bonus during their Power Sale

So I had a trade-in rejected (didn't include instruction manual, was a gamble). Nor Am returned along with a book they rejected. Game and case were destroyed because of their shitty packaging. Who do I talk to about this? It's a joke frankly.

So i got my Xbox 360 back today that got rejected for being damaged and cracked. Sure enough the hard drive on the console the returned was cracked but it did not look like the one I sent in. There were marks and scratched all over it even on the bottom which could not have happened during shipping since it was attached to the Xbox 360. So im guessing they switched the HDD with one that was a cheaper trade in and gave me the damaged one. Now im in talks with Amazon customer service to try to get something from this since they damaged my Xbox.

PS: Noram's return packaging was horrible. They just rubber banded everything together, put it in a huge box with a small amount of bubble rap. It was banging around in that huge box the whole way to my house.

Hopefully Amazon will accept the trade or do something to make up for this since as far as im concerned i sent in a perfect condition Xbox and the sent me a damaged one.

Amazon support. They'll likely just give you the credit you were denied. Amazon CS is great as long as you dont have a lot of returns/refunds in your recent history.

Deal of the Day is Pokemon Soulsilver for $20. Very good price imo, because I bought Soulsilver for $28 around the time of release.

I traded my Dreamcast in when it was $40. Console, controller, power cord, AV cable. Was paid for it quickly. Sounds like they fucked you over. This shit is hit and miss.
Looks like Modern Warfare 2 TIV popped up - it's been down for a while now, so locking in while I can.
It was $15 for a while actually just recently

I was considering trading in my copy of Dead Space 2 PS3 from the CE, but after doing some checking apparently the UPC on the limited edition inside the collector's edition is different from the UPC on limited editions that are sold by themselves. Weird. I don't think I've ever seen that before, usually it either has Not For Resale where the barcode should be, or it's the same as a regular copy of the game. I guess I'll hold on to it.

I'll be needing to talk to them about the Dreamcast trade in too...I know I sent in everything, though the controller was a blue one (still first party though); hopefully that alone isn't cause for rejection, it's listed as "incomplete" on the return email notice.

I had my first rejection in my last order. I sent in a Pokemon Fire Red because it was going for over $10 with the box/instructions/game and got it sent back for being incomplete. I got it back today with everything in it and the box smashed :/,
