Welcome to the Official CAG Amazon.com Trade-In Thread

Hey trade-in pals! SENDING THINGS IN DISC / CARTRIDGE ONLY / GENERIC CASE NO MANUAL / ANYTHING BUT COMPLETE COULD RESULT IN REJECTION. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS. YOU MIGHT GET ACCEPTED, YOU MIGHT NOT. NO ONE KNOWS. THERE ARE NO HARD AND FAST RULES. IF IT IS ACCEPTED, IT WILL ALMOST CERTAINLY ONLY BE CONSIDERED "ACCEPTABLE." RISK YOUR TIME AND EFFORT AT YOUR PERIL!
I'm getting an acceptance rate of about one per day; it makes me think some supervisor is standing around with a glass of absinthe next to a couple of dumptruck loads of games...while the one responsible for the glitch is made to scan each item and recite its TIV with tears in their eyes.
THANKS TO DISILLUSION386 and GI60 FOR POSTING AND MAINTAINING THE PREVIOUS AMAZON TRADE-IN FAQ THREADS

This thread’s primary purpose is to discuss Amazon.com’s video game trade-in program. Conspiracy theories about NORAM smashing games before sending them back / stealing children / sneezing and touching public door handles / etc welcome, but try to avoid going nutso. PLEASE READ THE TRADE-IN DEAL DETAILS AND FAQ BEFORE ASKING ANY QUESTIONS.

GENERAL FAQ (Updated 06/07/2011)
Can I post a question on this thread?
  • Only if you can't find the answer from below. And please let me know if it needs to be added to FAQ.
Can I edit this FAQ? (updated 6/7/11)
  • You bet! Up top there is a section for notable TIVs - feel free to add anything in there (and if you can remember, clean up after yourself in a few days when the TIV has undoubtedly dropped). You can edit the FAQ too, please just make sure it's useful and well formatted! Thanks!
Since when did Amazon start doing trades?
  • The program began in 2009 and is handled by a third party merchant, NorAm International.
What kind of shipping does Amazon provide us?
  • Free UPS ground ---- USPS is no longer available for free. There is now also an option to provide your own shipping.
Do I have to provide my own box or envelope?
  • Yes.
Do all my games in the same trade-in submission have to be shipped in the same box? (updated 3/9/11)
  • Not necessarily - people have sent in multiple boxes for the same trade-in submission successfully. It's even possible to send half at one time and the other half at the end of the valid shipping period. However, it's probably best to always ship everything at once.
Can I put separate trades in to a single box? (updated 6/7/11)
  • Sure, and they'll likely be accepted just fine. However, it isn't recommended since you would only have proof that you sent one of the trades (whichever mailing label you used). So it can be pretty risky.
Can I send in sealed games?
  • Yes. They won't reject games that still have the original shrink wrap.
Can I add Delivery Confirmation and Insurance to my shipment?
  • UPS Ground already provides you with tracking information, and I imagine you could get some sort of insurance added at a UPS store or location if you were so inclined.
I don't trust UPS ground. Can I pay for postage myself? What's the address?
  • Yes. You're more than welcome to do so. The address is:
    NorAm International
    22 Hampshire Dr
    Hudson, NH 03051
(This is also an option when submitting your trades)
When do I have to send my games once I have submitted my trade order?
  • You have 1 week (7 days) to send your games. There have been reports of submitting trades up to 15 - 20 days late, but that is definitely ymmv. Send on time for the best chance at success!
Crap, I have one day to go before my shipment deadline, but the website states that my deadline has already passed. How do I print out a shipping label and packing slip?
  • Load up any existing order (if you don't have any, check your browser's history or just submit a new one to use the link), and substitute the transaction ID for the trade-in order you need at the end of the URL.
How long does the whole trade-in process usually take?
  • From the time you send in your games, it may take up to 14 business days for the package to arrive. Most people usually receive their credit (Amazon GiftCard) in 3 to 5 business days, however.
How long does the "processing" status usually take? (Updated 6/8/11)
  • Usually a day or with little delay at all, but the longest reported days so far is 4.
My games were received on Friday (based on Delivery Confirmation), will I have to wait until Monday to receive credit?
  • People have received credit on a Saturday.
I do not have the manual, cover art, or original case for a game I want to trade in. Will they accept it? (updated 6/9/11)
  • While the details specifically state that original packaging is necessary, people have reported in the past that their trades were accepted despite missing some of these. This is extremely YMMV, however since some were also rejected by missing manual or cover art. On the other hand, older gen games; such as SNES, N64, and GB cartridges, normally get accepted without the original box and manual, but still YMMV.

It should be noted that with the new condition requirements (see later in the FAQ), you may be able to send an item in missing some or all of the required items (manual / cover art / case) and still have it accepted in "Acceptable" condition.
I do not have the manual, accessories, original box, original included game, etc for a console or accessory I want to trade in. Will they accept it? (updated 3/9/11)
  • The current wisdom is "probably not" - it's pretty YMMV but NorAm seems stricter than they should be on this. Your chances seem to be better for them accepting a console or accessory without the box / manual / etc if it's older generation or rare. You're more than welcome to give it a shot though if you're feeling lucky - just pack it well and include as much as you can!
My game is really beat up, what are the chances they’ll accept it?
  • This is YMMV. Some people have reported in the past that they sent in games in bad shape that were still accepted. Your best bet is still to trade in games in mint condition. Minor scratches are expected as these are used games.
My game came with DLC codes and I used them. Will my game be accepted? (Updated 12/28/11)
  • It is expected that included DLC codes have already been redeemed, so you should be fine. It is a kindness however if you have no use for it to not redeem it and let the next lucky soul who buys it from awd or wherever have a crack at it. Up to you!
My cover art (PLATINUM HITS) differs from the pic on amazon, will my trade be accepted?
  • It all depends on the UPC so just turn your game around, type in the UPC into the amazon search box. If the game comes up, then it's accepted regardless of cover art. Click on that result to submit your trade.
I have a game from a limited edition bundle, will they accept it?
  • If the game’s cover art has a UPC barcode, they will most likely accept it. If your game's cover states "Not for Resale" and does not have a UPC barcode, the game will most likely get rejected. Some people have had their games accepted in the past, but this is very YMMV.
The UPC barcode is not intact on my game's cover art, will that be accepted? (updated 3/9/11)
  • This is YMMV, but probably not. The UPC is all powerful within the walls of NorAm.
I sent in my games, all of which were in pristine condition with the original packaging, but they said that one game is damaged and is now being returned.
  • Always pack your games well. Put a lot of newspaper around your games in the box to secure them and to prevent any damages from haphazard box cutting. People in the past have requested their entire trade-in order if it’s obvious the damage wasn’t their fault, and Amazon ended up accepting the rejected game. This is YMMV as well.
Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
  • Yes. Once you click “Trade in” for a particular game, you may change the quantities. Once you submit, you can no longer change quantities on that trade-in batch.
How many multiple copies of the same game can I trade-in (updated 1/11/11)?
  • Maximum of 2 copies within 3 a month period.
I locked in X copies of a game but I now only have Y available to send. Can I just send in Y without being penalized? (updated 3/9/11)
  • Yes, you can always just send in a portion of your trade-in order and they'll just credit you for whatever they receive. However, the quantities you submitted for will stay locked in that instance (I think) so if you, for example, submitted for 2 copies and only sent 1, you may not be able to trade any more copies of that game for 3 months (see previous question).
Will the Trade-in of the Day TIV stay for 24 hours?
  • It's been reported that there is a limit (maximum # of copies) that will get the promoted TIV so lock yours.
So if I find a good flip, I can just send 2 copies of that game and not worry about Amazon accusing me of stolen merchandise?
  • Technically yes, but do keep in mind that other CAGs might want to participate in the current deal, and trading in a large number of the same game will definitely lower the TIV of said game. Let’s be nice to other people. This is probably moot for most folks now with the per account / address trade-in limit.
Wow, these TIVs suck (updated 3/9/11)!
  • Really? Hrm. While that may be true, they're often better than other comparable places. Your options of what to do with your used games are greater now than they've ever been, so feel free to shop your trades around or just sell them off on glyde/gamestaq/ebay/whatever. Also, not a question.
What the fuck? The TIV of a game I just bought for this deal tanked! What do I do?
  • The TIVs on Amazon fluctuate depending on the number of trades that are submitted, and we really can’t do anything about it. The best course of action for trading in games is to lock in your trade if you already have the games or are absolutely sure that you can obtain them. You can always cancel the trade submission if you end up not finding the games.
LOCK = SUBMIT YOUR TRADE, Don't just put it in the cart.
Can I edit a submitted trade?
  • Nope - once upon a time you could modify trade in quantities of submitted trades, but that ability has been removed.
Can I use my credit on items that are not video game-related?
  • Yes. This is the other perk for trading in games at Amazon since you're not limited to just video games.
Can I use my credit on items sold by third-party merchants on Amazon?
  • According to the fine print of the Amazon gift card use, some merchants are excluded. Your best bet is to try it on the checkout page of your order.
Strategy guides? I can trade in game/strategy guides? Whaaaaa?
  • Go to the Textbook Buyback section (http://www.amazon.com/Textbooks-Trad...ode=2205237011). You can either search on the title of a strategy guide you have to see if they'll accept it, or search for guides. The two best search strings to start with are 'prima guides' and 'bradygames'. Might try 'doublejump' if you want to trade in some of those. (Thanks eugaet)
I locked in some hilariously overvalued trade for some weird rare game/accessory/etc that I can pick up for cheap cheap cheap. They didn't accept it. What should I do? (updated 3/9/11)
  • The truth is that NORAM can reject things for any reason they see fit. While some people have managed to get silly things like a $200 credit for some cheerleading game (or for a PS2 - just ask io!), it's sooooooo YMMV that often it's not worth the effort. EXPECT REJECTION ON THINGS THAT ARE CLEARLY MISVALUED. That said, as long as you're willing to risk it, go for it!
What's all this item condition nonsense? And how can I get screwed over by it? (updated 6/9/11)
  • We're still kinda sussing out the details surrounding the new item condition portion of Amazon Trade-Ins, but it looks like there's a couple things to consider:
    • Good Condition eligibility (games):
    • - The video game, original manufacturer packaging and all original elements are included, but shows wear from normal use
      - Game still plays perfectly
      - Disc may have light scratches and other elements may have minor damage
      - Item may have been personalized (marked or identified)

      [*]Acceptable eligibility (games):

      - Game still plays perfectly
      - Item may have been personalized (marked or identified)
      - Item may be missing or have irreparable damage to one or all of the following: case, manual, artwork, bundled accessories, UPC

[*]Note that a game will almost certainly not be accepted if it meets any of these conditions:

      - Game does not play perfectly
      - Disc is cracked
      - Marked Not for Resale (or is otherwise marked not for sale)
Consoles/accessories have some slightly different criteria, but the idea is the same.
Did it seriously just ask me if I wanted my game / other item returned if they refuse to give me credit for it? (updated 6/9/11)
  • Yes, that just happened.

Unless you're purposefully sending them things you deem to be trash, please remember to choose the option that has them return your item to you during the checkout phase.
Who is AFS? (updated 6/9/11)
  • Not sure yet, but that's the name on the trade-in shipping labels now instead of NORAM. May just be NORAM with a different name. This will be updated as we learn more.
Post away!
to also add to this,

At $4 a game and 66 games = $264 before bonuses + 50% = $396

If you get the unlocked membership +10% $422 - $15 = $407

At least this way there aren't any fees, and you get the $400 you wanted.

Since i rounded down you'll definitely receive more than what i posted here.
Plus the Best Buy credit is instant. You won't sit around for 5 days hopping your trades don't get smashed or stolen. And if you wanted you could buy amazon kindle cards and then have amazon credit if you don't like shopping at BB.
Same, I'd make an Excel sheet and see what the values are at each site to maximize your value.

Some trade values tanked overnight, like Rayman is down to $9.45 (from $29).
I made one this morning and the results are pretty interesting. My lowest trade in value games at Amazon were higher at Best Buy. My higher end games for Amazon were much lower. I will probably have to use a hybrid approach. It's more work but I will make out better if I do it that way. Once I figure out what I am trading, I will determine whether or not to buy the $15 club and get the 10% extra. This is all contingent on confirming my best buy sells the kindle cards.

they'll be wherever they have the tablets at if they do sell them.

They were out of stock at my local ones for a while, but i spied a few yesterday (need to go back now with my $150 worth of xmas gift cards i would rather use at amz)

Good luck, man. Hope they accept it.

Yeah, more people should be stressing that point. If Best Buy has the better deal for you, it's win/win. You can either keep the best buy credit, or easily convert it into Amazon credit.

members should NOT stress this point as it will be removed as an option
members should NOT stress this point as it will be removed as an option
Why would it ever be removed? Amazon probably likes that you spend more spacebucks on their stuff when you buy kindle cards (so they'll probably never limit them to just kindle purchases), best buy likely gets a (small, meaningless) cut but I think if you want to sell kindles you probably are either required by amazon to have gift cards available or it's stupid not to get your (small, meaningless) cut to attach to the purchase.

besides all that, even if it requires a bit more effort you're better off using your best buy credit to buy actual games to trade back in to amazon anyways. It's been pretty trivial to accomplish that over the past couple months and end up very much on the plus side and with them running a b2g2 next week it's actually kinda wasteful to buy amazon gcs instead of games to trade in. and it actually helps support the program we all want to survive.

long story short, if it gets removed as an option we'll be fine just like always. I hope best buy tightens up their trade in program a bit more like amazon and gamestop have so we can be sure it'll be around and enjoy a long happy life.

It will be removed because it's a bad deal for BBY. Why would Best Buy want you to spend a gift card to buy a Kindle gift card? They are sending away their customers to their competition. That's just stupid. Once stores realize they have this loophole open it, they will close it. BBV did it a while ago and almost no other store allows you to buy gift cards with their gift cards.

2x fifa 11 accepted for a total of $40.20
2x Transformers dark of the moon 360 accepted for a total of $35.10
1x Dirt 3 360 accepted for $24.30
1x Dirt 3 PS3 accepted for $24.30

Only thing left is the Brand New Dragon Box 4 which I submitted for $556. I'll probably find out tomorrow. I'll pee my pants in school tomorrow if it happens.

You should consider peeing your pants at home before you go to school just in case.

In case anyone was wondering , I have had games I sent in with just the disc(no case or instructions) accepted as acceptable. This includes DS PSP Wii and 360 games. Whenever there is an outrageous trade in value I always lock them in with the Do Not Return Items option because the acceptable is usually still a positive flip when transfering credit from Gamestop to amazon(ie: all those terrible DS/Wii games last month that traded in for $30, most had an acceptable value of about $24 with the lowest usually around $21)

Took my 2x each of thrillville ($30) and world of outlaw ($27). Was scared they weren't going to take it cause of disc conditions.

Have 2x AC:Revelations pending. Submitted under a different UPC number. Let's see how that goes.

Also traded in RB 3($20) and 2x beatles rockband from the B1G2 gs deal $15/18 ---> $51

you can always contact amazon CS and ask for what the correct UPC will be. Type it on google and it should be whatever the first link is. It'll give you a barcode you can print out.

Anyone know if you can use another amazon credit in conjuction with the wii credit and 50 dollar promo credit. For those of us who bought the xbox with the 100 credit that would make this real slick. I've never messed with an amazon trade in before, but this has me foaming at the mouth.

Modern warfare 3 is going for a crazy trade in amount for the ps3. Right now its at 34.70 for a good condition trade in, which is wonderful if you bought it at 27
Oh, son of a...

I sent a mint copy for $33.75 last week and already received the credit. :bomb:
Yup, same here bud i feel ya lol.. but of course the thing I wanted to buy would have its rebate expired if I waited till next week to buy it :)

Wow congrats man I am so jealous. Thats gotta be one of the biggest tiv glitches ever on here if not the greatest. Where did you ever find a copy of the dvd set?

^^^Thanks man! I appreciate all of the help everyone gave me on this forum. I bought one of them when amazon still had them in stock for $40. My second set I bought on eBay for $60.
Holy sh*t!!!!! My dragon box 4 for $556.50 was accepted!!!!!! I actually sent two so maybe another $556.50 will be coming my way!
Completely awesome, congratulations. Big plans for your big spoils? Mind putting together a screenshot for the op for fun? That has to be the most insane score ever.

holy fark.......... I was going to order that same set from ebay from some guy in the UK ... but it would have taken over 10 days via international shipping, so I say nevermind..

Im pretty sure they honored the TIV cause it was really hard to find this set here so while alot of people locked in probably only like a couple actually got shipped to Noram

DBOX 2 was going in for a trade in value of over a 100 at one point but then it dropped to not being accepted and then to 2 dollars.
updated fp with link to Wii trade-in promo. pretty slick if you're in the market to swap consoles.
Be careful if you're interested in updating your Wii for a new Wii. The new ones have no Gamecube compatability.
Just had a new dvd and dvd set rejected for incorrect condition (both were listed as non-original wrapping). Can't wait to see what I get in return for new items I never opened.
Six Blu-Ray movies I sent them, set as "Like New" condition, were rejected for the same reason.

At the time of my trade-in, there were two conditions, "Like New" and "Good". Now there are three, "New", "Like New" and "Good". "New" items have the same TIV my "Like New" movies did, with one caveat:

It needs to be sealed/shrinkwrapped for it to be considered new.

I checked the trade-in order on the site and they're all listed as "Like New" with the same rejection reason. If I did a new trade-in with the same six movies and the same "Like New" trade-in condition, my $43.45 is now $24.00. :wall:

My guess is NorAm changed things again and they were considered as "New" due to the TIVs for the "Like New" items matching the "New" TIVs. Since they weren't shrinkwrapped, they were sent back.

I sent Amazon a rather lengthy email about the situation and that I'm less than pleased. I'm sure the response should be interesting.

These are exactly the kind of shenanigans I expected when I heard they were accepting things as "New". Sucks to hear about it nonetheless.
These are exactly the kind of shenanigans I expected when I heard they were accepting things as "New". Sucks to hear about it nonetheless.
There's shenanigans, and there's ducking out of of a trade agreement on something that's isn't even close to correct.

I think they're too stupid to figure out that when they have TIVs that match a different condition than is listed, they blindly change the condition of the item to match the TIV and not just process it as they should for the condition on the trade.

Again, I'm expecting Amazon's response to be interesting.

Wow - I didn't know there was a "new" option. That is interesting as places like GS won't even take things still shrink-wrapped... Is that in place for games, too, now? I think I sent a sealed game in a few days back.

Best condition for video games is 'good' still. After seeing the blu-ray trade in situation when adding "new" I'm hopeful they don't add new conditions to video games either, despite 99% of my games being in like new condition.

I swear I saw someone posting about Rayman minus the art book being accepted but search isn't bringing it up. Did I misremember?

Has anyone done the Wii trade in? I want to get a Ps3 and never use my Wii, so this would be a good time to off load it.
I'm not sure if I will be able to find the packaging or anything, so will that automatically be the acceptable condition? That's only $20..

At least this deal goes until the 31st so I have some time to decide.

LOL. I picked up Dragonbox 4 from Hastings for $12 or so after a coupon last month.

Got em all except for 7... which I'm still waiting for a deal on. EPIC trade though. Wish I was paying attention to this thread last month as I'm farely sure I could find a new copy in Austin (they had at least one last month at Fry's)

Got my "incorrect condition" (non-original wrapping) dvd and dvd set back. The dvd set used a single hub to hold 5 dvds and all of them were rattling around. Surprisingly none of them were scratched. I noticed a chip on the outside of the case and somehow the middle tab that's used to hold inserts on the inside broke off. So they had the pleasure of opening the set, somehow damaged the inside of the case (I'll give that the outside could have been during shipment but I didn't find the chipped part inside the bubble envelope) AND rejected it because of the wrapping. As for the dvd, it wasn't even opened (still had the y flap wrapping and security stickers on the top and bottom), can't come up with a reasonable explanation for that one. This one dropped from $1.05 to $1.00 but I might not bother attempting to trade it in again.

Those two items were part of a trade in that included another new dvd that was accepted. I'll still use the trade in program because it's the best option for me but I get a bit bummed out when things like this happen. I just wish there was an option for the person reviewing each trade to go into more detail on why things are rejected.
Wow - I didn't know there was a "new" option. That is interesting as places like GS won't even take things still shrink-wrapped... Is that in place for games, too, now? I think I sent a sealed game in a few days back.
I did my trade-in for the 6 BD titles on either the evening of the 28th or the morning of the 29th, and it was only "Like New" and "Good" at that point for conditions, no "New". I can only guess it showed up sometime between the 29th and the 4th, which is from shipment to receipt. The items I sent them were opened and never played, so they certainly fit the "Like New" category, as they were only missing the shrinkwrap that would classify them as "New". The TIVs I had for my "Like New" items are now the TIVs for "New" and the "Like New" TIVs are a bit less as follows:

"New" / "Like New":
$11 / $9.70 (Walking Dead S1)
$5.15 / $1.05 (State Of Play (non-combo))
$5.15 / $4.20 (American Gangster (non-combo))
$8.85 / $5.25 (Chronicles Of Narnia: Voyage Of The Dawn Treader (BD / DVD / DC))
$5.50 / $2.10 (Serenity (non-combo))
$9.00 / $4.20 (Ice Age: Dawn Of The Dinosaurs (BD / DVD / DC))

Had they done the condition correctly, they would have passed as "Like New" without any issue and I wouldn't have a problem. Since the TIVs I had are now at the "New" levels, they must have assumed they were "New". Since they lacked shrinkwrap, they were rejected as "New", and I never accept a lesser amount for my trade-ins, they were sent back.

Games are still showing "Good" and "Acceptable", so that hasn't changed.

I'm hoping my stuff comes back in the same condition I sent them in, and if not, then I'm going to be even more irritated with how it was being handled.

My items were packed perfectly to survive the trip and I'm betting they'll be tossed in a bubble mailer or some other piss-poor packaging on the way back. I've only had one item rejected previously from any trade, and it was accepted on the second time I submitted it. We'll see what happens when I get my items back.
