Yeah... MS didn't learn with the XBox One launch failure. They are STILL trying to shove digital only down our throats and it failed again with Halo 5 LCE. Not only digital only in a $250 LCE that technically isn't even a game CE without the game in it (a CE without a physical copy is now just a $250 statue/book end, not a video game CE), but to add salt in the wound the steelbook didn't even have a disc hub if you got a physical copy.

They only change their PR. Their agenda remains unwavering. Oh MS you never change.
It technically is a game CE, since it comes with the game. I still don't understand all of the hatred for a retail game coming with a digital token for the game. I understand that some people want a physical copy of the game (I still have one foot in that camp), but it's not like the game can't be had by other means in physical form.

Also, why would they put a disk hub in a case where there is no disk? They don't expect you to buy another copy of the game just to be able to put a disk in the case (and didn't have the code trade-in program until right before release because people kept bitching nerd raging about it). There is still plenty of stuff put in that case, and I would rather have a nice looking metal case for such things than something lesser.

Grabbed the kyrat but thinking I should have bought 2. They would make great game book ends !
That is a great idea!

The problem was the LCE was a product targeted towards a group of people that prefer physical discs. Most 'casual' or 'cattle' gamers do not buy CEs of games. Plus, it was the most expensive version of the game and seemed inferior to the lesser variant because it had no disc.

Also, what else would you want to put in the case? Breath mints? Candy corn?

Because there was no disc in the first place, the case should never have been in the package.

also disc holder in steelbook missing have nothing to do with it. It has to do with why include a steel book to begin with if no disc. A steelbook is a metal version of a standard case to hold the disc in. So without the disc there was no point in having that either

To their credit, a majority of the collectors had a chance to swap out their digital code for a physical copy.  However, they only offered the disc replacement program for a limited time only (which has now expired).  I think they should have just expanded the program to an indefinite amount of time.  If somebody picks up the CE on the cheap, they should still be offered the option to get a physical copy mailed to them.  MS earns some points here but they really should have extended the program.

Some of you guys laugh at the people that buy it at full price but it happens.  I sold my BB glitch for $240 when it came out.

#triforcequality

The Halo 5 LCE release was bullshit any way you want to slice it.  It's just another example of a publisher trying to take advantage of its biggest fans and supporters.

Think of it this way. Collector Edition. Collector. What do collectors do? They hoard shit basically. It's implied physical in this case.

If you are a all digital collector, the LCE doesn't mean anything to you. You can't store a statue on your 500 TB hard drive with the rest of your library? It doesn't really "go" anywhere, it just takes up space and you don't have a physical game library to put this with. It would be a one off. This assertion is backed up by the fact this is one of the only CEs without a physical game, so if said digital collectors really collected physical CEs, they would have a ton of physical games for being a digital collector, quite the the paradox. We can safely rule this scenario out given that the number of digital only collectors interested in physical CEs is a fringe and does not justify the volume of LCEs produced.

That leaves physical collectors, which is, shockingly enough, what physical limited collector editions are made for.

You're a Xbox One collector, and up until Halo 5 you have a 100% complete physical release retail library, including all CEs where applicable. Now Halo 5 LCE comes out with a LCE no physical game. Where does this belong on your shelf of all physical games? It's a LCE you don't have but it doesn't really fit in with your "complete retail physical library" either. It's "non essential" in your physical release library yet it's also a unique CE. The LE with the game is actually a better fit. Without being a complete package with a stand alone game disc, the LCE is basically relegated to being a $250 set of book ends that don't really belong in an all physical release collection. The latter being the very purpose of even making a tangible physical LCE in the first place.

It's a bit OCD sure but then, think about the people who want physical merchandise and would pay $250 for it. And that target market is clearly not buying the LCEs.

It's just... an odd decision. One that ultimately reflects the fact that MS' wet dream of an all DRM digital pay to play rent forever subscription 'games as a service' agenda never went away. They just got better at hiding it and not marketing it as a revolutionary feature when they learned the community wouldn't tolerate it willingly.

Lets not forget some of the patents. MS vision of the future was and still is using Kinect to count the number of people sitting on the couch watching netflex and charging you movie ticket prices per head. Given that the next step would be having integrated control over your home and charging you extra if you used your microwave to pop popcorn while watching pay per view or NFL on your Xbox One. This is Microsoft / EA / Activision's operating paradigm; how to nickel and dime you for things you already do with the minimal investment in or even elimination of consumer owned product. They are all envious of the cell phone subscribe to own model. They absolutely do not care about games. Gaming is just another growing or popular mass market to monetize a million different ways. And the more you can black box and restrict choice and consumer control and ownership of media with an all service based digital DRM model, the more you can monetize.

The overpriced limited collector edition doesn't have a tangible disc, but one thing it does make tangible is their never relenting XBox One launch principle and now silent attempts to continue pushing all digital down consumer's throats despite backlash after backlash. MS always gets what it wants. XBox One's all digital DRM infrastructure and zero consumer ownership vision is no different. It's still the end game and always has been even through their 180 degree back pedal facade. And the Halo 5 LCE and bitter reluctance at offering physical disc exchanges as an afterthought is the best proof of it since the failed XBox One launch itself.

It wasn't exactly a steelbook. It was a double thick metal case that had a bunch of the LCE stuff in it already.

But yeah, no spindle for holding a disc was kinda ridiculous. I mean, they'd almost have to put out EXTRA effort to not have one included.. right? You'd think that part would be the standard for manufacturing such a thing and at some point somebody said "Yeah, let's remove that piece because reasons".

true but thing is this: the LE was $100 and came with disc and steelbook/metal pack while the more expensive LCE at $250 didnt. That why i dont understand why they didnt make the LE digital Token and more expensive version physical disk. It would of made alot lot more sense.

It is a "Jumbo Steelbook". Scanavo uses them for products that have a lot of discs (ex. Target Walking Dead Seasons or the 5disc Hobbit Battle of Five Armies Ext Edition steelbbook and other products). Granted, Steelbook collectors definitely favor the smaller sized one

The case (at least the one from the console bundle) has lots of stuff in it, it's not like it's empty. THAT would be silly.

Plus, I have LOTS of empty SteelBook cases in my collection of games I've since traded in (FFX/X-2 :ps4:, The Order: 1886 :ps4: x 2) and cases that I've bought without owning a physical copy of the game at all (Far Cry 4 :xb1:, probably others I can't think of).

It's just... an odd decision.
I certainly cannot disagree with you here. :D

wow. I only just now realized the steelbook for the LCE does not have a spindle for a disc at all. Returned the whole thing immediately. I thought the only thing missing was the disc, which was no big as I had the regular halo 5. man, microsoft actually made two different limited editions? one for the LE with spindle and one for the LCE without? seems like it would have been easier to put the same in both.

Yup exactly. Only get the LCE if you really want the statue. The LE version of the game that comes with it does not provide the same value as the standalone LE.

Microsoft can't afford the $0.02 difference in production cost

How much did each piece of card board cost to make?
Cardboard? Like the cardstock on which the codes are printed? Probably more I guess, but if we're starting to talk the cost of making the LCE then I guess you have to factor in the cost of the disk itself. I imagine plastic insert with no disk mount + card with download codes + scratchable coating < plastic insert with disk mount + disk.

Talk about getting into the minutia of something, I think we're off in the weeds here. :D

I posted this on the correct thread on the trading section, but I guess I'll post here too.

I bought the LCE but I was annoyed with the fact that the spindle wasn't in the steel book. So I also picked up the LE recently and now I have the LCE steel book + inserts that I no longer need. If you are interested in this (war zone req and animated series have been sold), let me know. I'd let it go for like $5 + shipping.

Don't forget they probably saved a ton of money not having to wait for the game to go gold and a disc to be made before they could ship them out.

also disc holder in steelbook missing have nothing to do with it. It has to do with why include a steel book to begin with if no disc. A steelbook is a metal version of a standard case to hold the disc in. So without the disc there was no point in having that either
Personally I dont like the disc in the steelbook when I buy CE's. I prefer to display the book and have the disc in a regular jewel case so I can still play it without going through my display.

Nice to know I'm not the only one OCD about this. I prefer the same, having the game in the standard case so it can set in the shelf with my other non CE games for completeness and the CE stuff can go elsewhere. When it doesn't come with both, I ultimately end up grabbing a normal edition when it's $10 or so just so there isn't a hole in my library due to being a CE only and eliminating any wear and tear on the steelbook when the game is being used.

Dunno why, I just like how a multi shelf standard case game library looks in addition to having a separate area for CEs. Love the CEs that have both the normal case with the game and the steelbook is separate collector edition piece.

Once again, Life Is Strange LE on both XB1 and PS4 is gone and not order-able.  Clicking on the items in each order brings up a "This item is no longer available".

This is what shows up in my PS4 pre-order:

From my XB1 pre-order:

Someone at Best Buy's operations department, the publisher or both are going to get a solid kick in the berries for not knowing WTF is going on with the release of this title.

EDIT: I put in a pre-order at Amazon as a backup.  At least their stuff looks right. :bomb:

Well they were made aware of the problem, so hopefully the taking the listings down this time is them fixing the problem. My orders look the same as yours under the orders section on the site, except on your account homepage where it has that little box that shows your last order, it still shows the PS4 art. Anyway I think I'm in agreement with you, I think I'll go place a backup order on Amazon just in case.

Between crushed CEs and botched item skus, is Best Buy quickly becoming the new Wal-Mart?  How long before we have 300 lb waddlers driving around on scooters blocking the isles and flinging feces at each other over $50 TVs?

It's definitely not WalMart. I get 20% off my purchases at Best Buy. SUCK ON THAT!

Got my Euro XCX edition from Germany today. it only took a few days to get here, I was quite surprised. Came mint, in better condition than the NA version, and it had to traverse the Atlantic ocean.
yeah got mine in before my GS order as well. Man, I'm loving this steelbook from the amazon.de version though -- thing is gorgeous!

Dang, people actually imported the XCX CE? I mean, I get it's a nice steelbook but paying $90 for it is kinda ridiculous since you can't really play the game unless you import a Wii U.

if I remember correctly last time I checked on it even after shipping it was only $72 usd total and that included shipping.

What he said (below). Also, I had a promotional credit outstanding with amazon.de and I knew the outerbox and such would be in English so it was a no-brainer. Most of these Nintendo exclusive amazon.de steelbooks end up retaining their full price or going higher anyway. Also, many times I can make an arrangement with some kind folks on another site I go to who will order it for me and sell the game over there and I only have to pay the difference + shipping to me. (With amazon things though its usually just cheaper to have them ship it and sell the game myself.

Though... with all these region-locked games I have it probably wouldn't hurt me to just purchase a darn EU/PAL console and 3DS.
