Makes me wonder how Revelations will work; are those carts specially coded I guess to allow a free download of it?

Wonder if someone on here will get a CE cart from someone trading one into GS if that's the case.
I think when it was announced this edition was specifically noted as the only version of the game that will have all three versions on one cart, which is part of the reason why people are going a bit loopy over getting this copy.

I haven't been to a rom site in years but I can't help but wonder how they got all three games on one card. The last fireemblow had a decent amount of 3D video and I can only assume these games are all similar in length. Does anyone know the size of the file for the "CE" version?

I remember reading somewhere that the largest storage size for a 3DS cart can get up to 8GB if needed, though I doubt there's been any games in the past that have needed it. Maybe they decided to save it for just this occasion. As others have noted too, it was already done in Japan, and there's been no indication it has affected the quality, so it'll probably be fine.

Considering NAND flash SD cards can be up to 256 GB (512 yet?) and mask ROMs are just as dense if not more so. Something the size of a 3DS cart could in theory contain 5 to 10 times more space than a double layer BDROM. Since it's a serial interface, the addressing limits are defined by software protocol rather than a fixed number of address lines.

Mechanical media is just so primitive today.

I have to wonder though if the multi ROM binary is built in such a way to share the assets. I can't imagine it literally duplicating each game with twice the storage when 99% of the assets are identical. It's probably just the two executables linked at diff starting addresses but referencing fixed asset addresses.

Not familiar with DS dev so don't know the cart structure but being a serial accessed burst block device (it has to be, not enough pins) that the CPU can't address directly, it probably has a file system structure rather than a raw EPROM style packing of data at linear addresses. Which would make it that much more trivial to throw multiple executables in the root of the card with the asset folder structure being untouched for either game.

My guess is all the ROM images are all the exact same size using the same size MX mask ROM, but the stand alone copies have a few MB of unused space in the internal structures for the missing executable for the other half of the game...

Or the most likely setup with today's a la carte piecemealing of software where everything is already there but you only get to use what you paid for, and for ease of mass production, all carts are probably 100% identical with the only diff being the startup config points to one of three: Birthright.bin, Conquest.bin, or DualMenu.bin for the combo cart which then chains Birthright.bin or Conquest.bin after displaying a menu. The programs are only going to be a couple MB in size each and all the dialog, maps, art assets, etc are the same.

Keep in mind the original Japanese ROM image didn't split it like the US release and was likely configured like above. The only change being needed to split it up to separate carts is changing the boot file in the boot config.

A bunch of video for a 3DS game is not going to take up all that much space.  The resolution of the top screen is 800x240, which ends up being about 2/3 the resolution of old standard definition TV's (480p in the US).  Assuming the videos are something similar to mp4's, you can get about an hour of video out of 1 GB.  If they aren't in 3D, you can double that.  Trim the frame rate and/or bit rate and you get even more space to play with.

How much video do these games have?  Not in MGS territory I'd imagine.

Between stuff like that, Devil's Third being "holy grail" not even 24 hours of it's release (which is bullshit, Devil's Third has nothing on MK8 and HW LEs), NBA games being $100 and rare (2K13 for wii U and 2K16 Jordan on PS4 already), and having staked out amiibo since Nov '14, and numerous other CEs and limited consoles (Metal Gear, etc) I take no chances with anything anymore.
2k13 for wii u is 20 at gamestop. Unless your talking about sealed.

They can put up to 200GB on a MicroSD card, I think they can stuff that FE cart with as much memory as needed for them to get all three games on a 3DS-sized cart.

After doing some digging 3DS ROMs do indeed use a file system (called ROMFS not sure if that's a community term or a official Nintendo name). Al three versions of the game's ROM image are likely identical.

The dialog text resource files, art and sound assets, videos, level maps, models, etc are all the same, save for a couple path exclusive maps or videos that aren't used in one path or the other. Multiple binaries which are small in comparison for each version of the game. You might have a 2 GB ROM with 2 GB of data on it with only 1.5 GB of assets actually accessed for a given path (eg 500 MB of path unique FMV that isn't used in one version or the other)

The only differentiating factor between all 3 ROM images is the boot config file that says which binary to start up when the game card is started from the 3DS menu. This normally wouldn't fly except 3DS carts are expected to not be consumer accessible, cannot be modified because they are mask ROMs, and are encrypted anyway.

Would be interesting to do a binary compare of the ROM on all 3 unencrypted American images, bet they only differ by a couple of bytes belonging to the boot.cfg for the boot image name, 3DS menu icon name, and the cart id.

I got lost after the word, "After".

Basically, since the "games" use the majority of the same assets they can save space by just reusing the same assets instead of having them on the card in multiple places. Game asset economy FTW.
A better way to think about it is that the original game is in reality just one game all along, with "unseen content" based on which choice you make that you would have to replay the game twice to see it all. This has been a thing since NES games. Pokemon is a perfect example.

Splitting up the carts for the American release is as simple as altering the boot.cfg with a unique cart id, icon, and which program to start (Birthright or Conquest directly for the stand alone games or the Menu program for the SE which in turn redirects to Birthright or Conquest on user choice like the original "full game"). Otherwise it's the same exact cart.

TLDR: there were never two games to begin with.

Question for you guys ... 2K released a media exclusive edition of XCOM 2 with a pretty sweet box and metal art book. Anyone know why this wasn't offered as a limited edition ... And any idea how to grab one?

They may offer is as a CE when it's released for consoles.

Need some help from you guys. So I completely forgot about the Naruto Shippuden: UNS4 CE being UK exclusive and it's sold out at any reputable places online and the ones I could find were over $200 for it.

Might any of you have retailers in mind that I could check? I already checked all the Euro amazons sites (amazon.de being the best option but they won't ship this to US), Game, Zavvi, Play-asia, and the resellers on ebay.

Of course I would like to pay as close to retail for this as possible, so if anyone has any suggestions that would be awesome. TIA!

The release date for the Revelations DLC on BB is 3/10, so not too long after the game comes out. I imagine the content is complete, so maybe there's no download needed.

Edit: Looks like this was answered above.

Additionally, NoA has advertised that people who buy the special edition get Revelations 3 weeks before everyone else

I was actually thinking of getting that but since it's sold out and after seeing an unboxing video of it, I think I'll just get the steelbook off ebay.

I thought someone said it wasn't an actual "steelbook" (something about hinges, i think?)...

Sooo we're almost at Fire emblem release day.... so on release day I go to Best Buy was it? and hope someone canceled a pre-order? or Gamestop and do the same?

Or do I just mash F5 at home on amazon hoping it'll pop up....? decisions decisions.

Haha, are people going to just start sucking up stock of Devil's Third because it MIGHT end up a hard-to-find game? Seems like amiibo all over again. I found this gem of a review on the game on Metacritic:

"Surprisingly good.. I'd rate it an 7.8 overall."

He rated it a 10/10.

I get the feeling Gamestop would pull some behind the scene shadiness to score exclusive reprinting rights to this game. (Kinda like when they magically released a ton of "new" copies of Xenoblade and Metroid Prime Trilogy). Sell em in spurts, wait for em to sell out, wait a few weeks, rinse and repeat.

People seem to be falling for it for an otherwise shitty game.

Screw Gamestop.

Oh this game is $90 because ebay.

So why isn't this game $1 because ebay?

Or ebay says this game is only $5 without the case and manual yet you want $60 for it?

Thank you! I owe you one big time.

Glad I decided to check the site as soon as I woke up. It said there was only 1 left in stock.

Yeah, I watched the unboxing too, but seeing as how it is (probably) the last UNS game, this one is worth getting.

This time I have a feeling it's probably more Nintendo to blame, then Gamestop. Amazon is also getting more and Play Asia already got additional supplies. With multiple retailers involved it would seem to me that the supplier is the one trickling them out to stores. I'm personally waiting for Best Buy to get more, then I may pull the trigger.

With multiple retailers involved it would seem to me that the supplier is the one trickling them out to stores. I'm personally waiting for Best Buy to get more, then I may pull the trigger.
Best Buy took the Devils Third page down a couple days ago.

Since GS has a "Online Online" and "Limited Quantities" on their Doom CE preorder teaser on their front page, I tossed in a pre-order for the XB1 version, just in case.

I don't know if this will help anyone but I got an email from Amazon UK with the code for the preorder bonus stuff for Naruto UNS4 Collectors Edition and the code worked on my US Xbox One. I wasn't sure it was gonna work but was pleasantly surprised.

All discs and DLC are region free for PS4 and XB1.

all discs yes, but all DLC is region locked on ps4 I believe (unless you go to the touble of making multiple psn accounts).

So i just checked my Valkyrie Chronicles Remastered that i preordered from Amazon.  I managed to preorder it before it was giving the 20% prime discount.  They updated my pre-order with two Prime discounts at $4.50 each, so i am getting $9 off.  Not bad lol

Guess nobody on here caught the Capcom store glitch huh. They had Street Fighter V CE preorder for just $64.99 and the Mega Man helmet statue for only $14.99. Lasted about 20 minutes before it died.

I knew discs were region free but I didn't know if DLC was also so thanks everyone for the info
