Those guides did end up getting cheap. I pulled the trigger when they hit ~$60
Yeah, I stopped collecting CE guides as another new year's resolution but the DA guide was pretty cool. I'm guessing that and the $120 Unity guide didn't work out as I haven't seen any uber guides on the horizon.

It was a great deal with GCU so I decided to buy Persona 4: Dancing All Night - Disco Fever Edition (PS Vita) during the one day sale.

Miraculously, it arrived in pristine condition despite having zero cushions of any kind. There are only two items in the box, the game and packing slip.

The shipping box is way too big for the contents inside it. I used a Blu-ray and Steelbook for reference.

Took me 3 attempts to get an undamaged P4:DAN DFE...

My returns sat on the shelf for months with those stupid spider things smashing them even more then disappeared.

Betting all the stores that had returns for the same reason and couldn't get rid of them shipped them back to the warehouse and clearanced them out online.

Did anyone get an undamaged one?

Related note,

Now I've got Gamestop and GoHastings both constantly sending me opened games as new...

Can't trust anyone anymore sheesh.

I threw away my P4 CE box which was difficult considering how classy all Persona stuff is design wise. Anyways, it's an easy and super fun plat and I don't regret paying full price for it (even though I think I was able to get 8 bucks back since it dropped the day of release and Amazon was kind enough to refund me).

Also, don't know if anyone else imported it but the SF5 Steelbook is one of the nicer ones I've seen. Wish so much of the game wasn't coming later but I imagine it's going to be worth something when the stock runs out.

I got an undamaged P4: DAN DFE edition from BB that was shipped in an oversized box w/ padding, but I preordered. I wonderful if different regional distribution centers ship out packages differently (i.e. some uses more boxes while others use more bubble mailers). Certainly doesn't seem like there's a standard shipping template for BB.

Atlus is partially to blame, making the outer box so flimsy and easy to distort.  Wish Atlus wouldn't cheap out like that and follow the recent examples of Trails of Cold Steel Lionheart Edition and FF Explorers CE and use higher quality, sturdy outer boxes for their CEs.

I don't believe sturdier boxes would hold up much better if shipped in a bubble wrapper, IMHO.

They would. Biggest cause is paper thin boxes with hollow cavities inside. The P4DAN is especially bad, the whole very large front of the box caves even under the compression of it's own shrink wrap because there is nothing behind it supporting it.

Id prefer they used form fitting boxes for CE/SE games that were made out of sturdy cardboard. Yeah it would cost more but Im sure that money would be made up by not having to have more complicated compartments inside larger ones, also means they could ship more in the same sized box as the oversized boxes, and the big flimsy ones are double the size so using a small one without the compartments would come out to be about the same amount of cardboard since its smaller in size but double the cardboard used. Not feeling well so I dont even know if that makes sense.

All blu-rays and games of any kind, whether it is regular or Collector's Edition, should be shipped in boxes from major retailers.

Nah, the vanilla versions seem to do just fine in bubble mailers 99.9% of the time.

The CE's and such though seem to get damaged 99.9% of the time in bubble mailers.

These companies are failing to understand, or just not caring, that the game box itself is part of the product we are buying. I have no doubt in my mind there is some corporate stooge who is making the decision to continue shipping this way because "The stuff in the box is just fine, what the fuck do these people really want?" Probably an old Gamestop stooge transplant making the call.

In fairness, most consumers probably don't care about a little outer box damage. It sucks for those of us that collect, but we are definitely a small minority of buyers.

Yeah, but those who do not care about box damage are almost always buying the aforementioned regular version whose box does not get damaged. If you are buying a product called "Collector's Edition," or something similar there is reasonable proof you are some degree of collector who wants his stuff in perfect condition...or a scalper who has the same priorities for reselling.

What has been the general luck in finding Collector's Editions on the date of release?

Missed out on pre-ordering The Division collector's edition, and wondering if it's even worth it to bother calling around on release day to see if there were any left over at Gamestop/BB/etc

It shouldn't be that most consumers don't care, most retailers' operations people that pack boxes shouldn't take shortcuts or be lazy as fuck because a bubble mailer is quicker than a box with airpack or paper pack.

Same thing should apply for steelbooks as well.

While I agree with you, there are financial reasons for not using rigid boxes (both box cost and increased shipping cost) and the number of damage returns is likely far outweighed by the savings. I would also say that I have personally observed lots of people buying damaged collector's editions in stores and plenty of people posting here that damage doesn't bother them. I personally won't accept a damaged item, but I am pretty confident that I am in a very small minority here and in the world at large.

I got a replacement P4 DANCE today and it was, as I expected, shipped in a bubble mailer and also damaged.  Best Buy says they cannot send more than one replacement.  They suggested I drive to the only store with it in stock (over an hour away) to pick one up.

I'm kind of done with Best Buy's shenanigans with limited/collector's editions.

I just gotta say. It's just a box lmao. As long as the contents inside are pristine, what's the big deal?
collectors editions are designed for the exact audience that the name suggests - collectors. Many collectors keep products sealed, or more likely, complete in box. Thus destroying the outer box ruins the whole point of said edition for the collector.

Yeah, it's important because.

Yes what matters is what's inside the box.

hqdefault.jpg
While you guys have a point, some collectors can't be reasoned with:

Kyle Reese said:
Listen, and understand! That Collector is out there! It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you understand his point of view.

I just gotta say. It's just a box lmao. As long as the contents inside are pristine, what's the big deal?
These are crushed - the contents are guaranteed not to be pristine and I've had trouble returning them once they're opened (and the items inside are damaged) before. Even if the items inside were fine why can't Best Buy just pack them properly and eliminate this problem as a possibility? Everyone would be happy then. No one complaining about damaged boxes and no one complaining about people complaining about damaged boxes.

There's nothing unreasonable about expecting the packaging of a CE to be in very good condition with no major damage to it when it arrives.

I've had really good luck lately, but I'd have no problem wanting an exchange if I'd have something arrive that had a crushed box like I've seen for many of the Fire Emblem SE's/Persona/etc....

It wouldn't be much of a problem if either the retailers pack things with more care or the manufacturers stop using the cheapest materials and overall poor packaging in their "premium" releases.

If anyone cares.... the Megaman Legacy 3DS collection + gold amiibo is getting hard to find.  It is still in stock at Target.com and also ~1 copy at many local Targets.   But the package is sold out at Bestbuy.com, BB stores, and also on Amazon.   Now is the time to act if you think want this.

Just don't buy CEs from Best Buy if the game has been out more than a month and you care what it looks like. At that point the warehouses just send the extras to random stores and any sold on the website will come from that stock. You are then at the mercy of whichever employee has to go grab the game and whether they give a shit to take the time to assemble a box and make filler bubbles.

Walmart still has it in stock too. I just placed an order for at a bestbuy near by for store pick-up. hopefully i got in with enough time. Thanks for the heads up.

Based on my personal experience, I have made 4 orders recently of normal, blu-ray cased items, either PS4, XB1, or movies, and 3 of the 4 have come damaged. When I say damaged, I don't mean dinged up, I mean like completely smashed with pieces of cases falling out of the bubble mailer when opened. Best Buy used to ship items like DVD's and PS2 games back in the day in these cardboard envelopes. I never had a game back then come damaged. it was brilliant. i wish they would start doing that again instead of these cheap unpadded envelopes.

How do they even fit the P4 DAN LE in a bubble mailer? Those boxes aren't that small...

I mean I know giant bubble mailers exist, but still.

That is a really good thing to know, thanks for sharing that.

For what it's worth, the system pouch from the Fire Emblem SE is really nice. The artwork is intricate and beautifully detailed and the pouch has a very nice silky finish to it.  FE fans owe it to themselves to get one of these SEs.

I agree, been taking it with me to work with my 3ds since last Friday.

Gonna switch back to my Fates faceplates and use the pouch along with it. Gonna get mad bitches with my Fire Emblem swag.

I'll sell you my extra copy.

Then you'll get double the bitches.
I already have 2 sets of the Face Plates, I'll super glue them to my forehead for 4x the bitches

And I'll get a Lucina amiibo dipped into solid gold to use as my cars hood ornament, because she will always be my main waifu

Plain standard versions are fine with bubble mailers, those you can exchange at least.  Not CEs that have been sold out for 6 months.

I'm debating about getting the Dark Souls 3 Estus Flask Edition Game Guide that is up for pre order on Amazon now.

http://www.amazon.com/Dark-Souls-III-Estus-Flask/dp/0744017068/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1456541764&sr=1-1&keywords=Dark+souls+iii+estus
Well, since you said you're "debating" and not that you really want it, if you are looking for a stance to push you to one side or another here is one:

The less support ridiculously overpriced guides like this get, the less chance they have of pushing them out like this in the future. $100+ for a guide, I don't care wtf it comes with is absolutely absurd. If the sales bomb, the people will have spoken, and it'll be less likely we see this kind of ridiculousness in the future.
