FAQ:
  • What is this thread? A massive collection of limited edition games & other attributing items, included with links.
  • Why put it all in one thread? More traffic due to collaborating interests.
  • Why is that important? This keeps the thread popular and doesn't risk a failed CE from falling through the cracks unnoticed.
  • What can be discussed here? Anything relevant to what is posted.
  • Why make another CE compilation when 2017 isn't over yet? Karma.
  • Where are the big pictures? Still here, scroll down. Due to the increased number of CEs, a preface post is needed.
  • When is the Ni No Kuni 2 CE coming out? Not announced. Granted, IF it does, you can bet I will devote an entire page to it.  Announced. Holy jumping pilgrims, no entire page though.
  • What about other CEs that have been announced? Give me a minute. It takes a bit of time to format the title, price, date, & retailer links in correctly.

Legend:
  • (OOS) = Out of Stock
  • CE = Collector's Edition Game
  • Book = Strategy Guide, Art Book, and/or Lore Book
  • SB = Steelbook
  • Anything linked means it exists. If not it hasn't been announced yet.

I got the premium NNK2 on amazon and the CE on the bandai store. Worst case I just cancel the bandai namco store order and I'm nothing out of pocket.

Remember when Wizard Edition was $99 and $200 was the scalper price?

Sigh.
I remember passing on the LOU Post Pandemic Edition because it was too expensive at $160...

CEs really have gotten out of control, and I have started passing on a lot of them, but I still get the ones of the games I really care about.

People were paying around $400, shortly after it was released. I never flipped games before, but in hindsight, I probably would have tried to get my hands on more than the 1 copy I ordered.

TBH yeah that's another crappy value for a $200 CE a la SquareEnix. Looking at the contents now I know I will be perfectly happy with the Premium Edition for $64. That one has the steel and the music CD, plus the Papercraft.
I got it for $175 but agree the extra $130 isn't going to be represented by something amazing. I'm probably more critical than the average collector but I can't think of a single statue type thing I've been impressed with in a traditional CE. I think my kids will like the plushie and my 8 month old will like the music box. I'd entertain better quality collectibles even but I don't think Namco intends to support it at that level.

I have an order in for the CE too, but I know I won't open it if I end up letting it ship because it's too expensive.   I'll open up the premium edition and play that.  So basically I'd be holding it as an Ebay investment because I know it's too expensive to open.  That kinda says it all.

I just got an email from Amazon Spain that the Metroid Legacy Edition became available for purchase. By the time I saw it, it was sold out. In my panic I checked every other EU site and managed to grab one from Germany!

https://www.amazon.de/gp/aw/ol/B07339W2V7/ref=olp_tab_all

Snagged the Ni No Kuni 2 CE from Amazon since I missed the coupon from Bamco no point in ordering there. Now I waits for the EU Edition to be available at a site that doesn't suck. I'm looking at you Game..

I couldn't decide on what edition to buy. I really want the collectors edition, but $200 seems too steep for me. I want it bad, but I doubt this one will be as rare as the 1st one, so I might be able to get it cheaper down the road. I just pre-ordered the premium edition.

life of a poor ass gamer

I liked how the done the 1st game's collectors edition, with how it was set up like a kickstarter. Reasonably priced, tons of time to get in your pre-order, and the stretch goals for bonus items in the collector's edition.

Except nobody would buy because "ZOMG IT ISNT RARE ENUF TO FLIP".

It was expensive but it was a pretty good deal, honestly. $100 got you a steelbook, variant cover comic book, and the statue. The statue itself might have been cheap plastic like other statues but was really well made.

Square Enix CEs are easily the worst in terms of value.

The way they ran the first one was real nice. Shame we didn't hit more goals

It's been a little over four years. I vaguely remember how that process worked. Do you recall?
The website is still up:

http://ninostarter.com/

The idea was good but Digital River completely fucked people over with the back door preorders. I was super pissed since my order was cancelled. And the way they made up for it was a complete slap in the face to people: a guide for a game they didn't have and $20 certificate to a store you'd probably never wanna shop at again.

You know what I'm glad that the demand has tapered off on these $200 RPG CEs.  FFXIV Stormblood and FF12 CEs didn't sell out at the SE store.  Actual gamers, not the (omg I deserve to get one of everything) hoarders, are speaking with their wallets that these prices are too much.

There's a couple of CE's that I didn't see that may be worth adding:

Sudden Strike 4 $80.39

Fifa 18  $80.39

Oh yeah, I vaguely remember this. Why did they cancel pre-orders again? I do recall that because of some fiasco they just randomly opened up pre-orders to the public but not actually those affected earlier which ended up screwing people over twice.

I originally ordered the CE of NNK2, but after looking at it, I cancelled and went with the premium edition.
If I'm able to reliably get a pre-order in for the EU King's edition there's a decent chance I'll cancel my CE also. The US CE is $50 too much and doesn't have enough to justify the cost (at $150 or $200)

There was a preorder period for the game, wherein people preordered the game as part of that Ninostarter campaign. Once the campaign ended, so did preorders. Then a month or two before release, Namco opened up preorders again for whatever reason for a bit and sold out- there wasn't anything suspicious here, likely that Namco produced a rounded number and needed to sell the excess. That was supposed to be it. But around the time of release some individuals found a backdoor link that still let them preorder, literally just before release. Digital River decided to ship out those orders first, resulting in many early legitimate preorders being cancelled because they ran out of the game.

There was also a retailer that ended up with a ton of copies and sold them on eBay at a markup which looked super sketchy but Namco claimed those orders were made much earlier and legitimate- there were tons of doubts of course. People made accusations that DR sold a bulk of orders to that vendor as an easy sale (easier to ship 100 units to one retailer than 1 unit to a 100 diff people).

Digital River was the vendor for a lot of game stores (Namco, Capcom, SE) and I had tons of trouble with them, historically. Worse vendor ever. I know Namco and SE dropped them, not sure if Capcom still deals through them.

I preordered on Ninostarter but I forgot about all of the latter parts of that. I completely remember it all now - god it was such a cluster fuck. I remember calling Digital River and emailing them frantically to ensure my early order was fulfilled. Ugh, Digital River. I hate dealing with them even more than the current SE store (which I think runs the Bamco store too) - so unresponsive.

Is there some reason you started a thread when preorders aren't even open yet?

Thats why even this scalefast company handling things now has me nervous. I've never heard of them until now.

Pre-ordered 1 Collector's and 1 premium from Amazon. If the Kings edition goes up...will pre-order that as well and maybe cancel the U.S. collector's.

I will get the NNK2 CE, but I've been cutting down my overall CEs and LEs dramatically. At first I cut out almost all non RPGs(barring games I really really want, I'll always buy a CE for that if the contents are cool). But most recently, I cut out a ton of the JRPGs too. Games like Omega Quintet, Hyperdimension, Nights of Azure, Atelier games, etc. Any of those I greatly regret buying those. The contents are crap and the games are pretty much very mediocre or complete crap.

For the rest of the year, I NNK2 and Destiny 2 are the only major CEs I have (ignoring smaller ones like the Samus Returns CE)... and I think I might cancel the Destiny 2 CE.
I only have Destiny 2 and Shadows of War, and I probably won't keep Destiny 2.

Nope.

Still no.

Wonder if stuff like Prime and GCU is also responsible for inflated CE prices.  How many people buy what should be over priced CEs when they are saving $50-60 on them? And publishers think it's normal now.

No, I think it's marketing guys using historical data to realize that only 20k people really want CEs but those customers can be taken to the bank. Production costs are still high enough that jumping from 20k to 30k can sink the profit as those unsold units head to clearance. If a publisher can get 1-2m net profit from a CE that goes real far to reduce the overall sales needed when that might be the same profit as an additional 100k units.

For the rest of the year, I NNK2 and Destiny 2 are the only major CEs I have (ignoring smaller ones like the Samus Returns CE)... and I think I might cancel the Destiny 2 CE.
I'm keeping my D2 CE. Put it tons of hours on the first and will do the same again. Huge destiny fan haha.

Destiny CE should come with a nerf bat.  All online games with patching capability should, come to think of it.

Really dying for a new shooter looter, but after The Division and it's constant nerf train, I just can't.

I managed to 100% FF XII Zodiac Age and it's been a month since launch with no nerfs! Imagine that.

Anyone have any luck with an in-store preorder of Ni No Kuni 2 CE at Gamestop?  Would like to use some credit on it.  Will attempt to try later today and will report back if I do.

Best Buy and Amazon still pay the publisher the same amount for a CE weather they include a Prime/GCU discount or not. It's not like Best Buys $10 certificates where they are kicking them back some $$ to be included in the program and increase preorder numbers.
