Official PS2 Guitar Hero Thread (Rock the 80s/Guitar Hero III) - GHIII Out Oct. 29th

Don't know if this is the best place to ask but, what's the best deal on GH1 or GH2 with guitar?

I have an itch to go ahead and pick it up finally!

I dont know of any deals on GH at the moment. At least around me its always full price. But you can find a used copy of either game at a Gamestop & also buy a used guitar to go the cheaper route. Its a damn good deal at full price though.

Whoa! I must have missed the addition of the Scorpions' track. I freakin' love that band!

Screw the achievements; I might just have to get the game for the PS2.

That's good, since it's not coming out for the 360 (or at least, that's what they're saying right now).

Sorry, I was also thinking about the first GH when I typed that. I'd like to get both for PS2, since I don't want to pay for the song packs for the 360.

Just got this:

That makes it three masters to 18 covers. :whistle2:(

Meh. I think they're changing it a bit too much, mainly visually. I do like the battle powerups, though I can see them getting ludicrously annoying if abused. The Les Paul is way too plain looking compared to the SG and Xplorer, but I do like the faceplate idea.

Heck, I'll probably still buy it, but Rock Band is number one on my list right now.

New Songs for 80s Edition (supposedly)

X-Los Angeles
Dead Kennedys-Police Truck
Judas Priest-Electric Eye

Overall, I'm not happy. Someone who has a preview build listed all the bands that weren't in the game a little while back, and they were basically every single band you would want.

I mean, think about it. All these bands:

Def Leppard
Van Halen
Bon Jovi
Pat Benatar
Dire Straits
Journey
Foreigner
Billy Idol
The Cars
Survivor
The Clash
Alice Cooper
Ozzy
Lita Ford
Madness
Whitesnake
R.E.M.
INXS

I know all the stuff about costs, some people won't license, etc., but give me a fucking break. This is a game with a specific theme that makes a lot of choices glaringly obvious. You're telling me that not one of those bands was willing to license a song? Seriously? Is Whitesnake really that anal? And then there's the fact that the fucking thing is going to likely cost $50.

Van Halen had a song on GH2, so that's a little weird.

Madness? Did they have anything other than Our House (in the Middle of the Street)? Let's not list one-hit wonders.

I'm not sure the Cars would translate well to Guitar Hero. Their songs, while I do enjoy them, son't seem like they'd be fun to play in this game.

No Journey and no Def Leppard really hurts, though. Same with Bon Jovi.

Still, why focus on what's not there instead of what is there? They did get a bunch of really iconic 80s bands and songs!

Van Halen's song was a Kink's cover, so it was a workaround. VH got no royalties, and didn't have to approve of anything (I think).

X? Fan-fucking-tastic!

Dead Kennedys? THPS ruined me on "Police Truck," and there are vastly better songs to be used by them.

Yeah, I knew it was the Kinks' (I highly recommend Come Dancing with the Kinks album) but I didn't realize VH didn't have to approve it. that's really weird.

More priest? fuck yeah.

Alice Cooper and more Ozzy would kick ass. Some of those bands just plain suck ass or don't work for guitar hero. INXS and R.E.M? Please.

R.E.M. and INXS would be far superior choices that Ballroom Blitz, What I like About You, and We Got The Beat. This is not up for discussion.

Shit, let's throw these in there, too:

Bathory
Black Sabbath
Celtic Frost
Joy Division
Megadeth
Slayer
The Cure
The Smiths
Venom

That's approaching 30 bands that would have been better than almost everything in this game. That's unacceptable when the game's entire existance is contigent on it satisfying a particular theme.

EDIT: More song info (scroll down):

- Because, it's Midnite (by Limozeen). This is the bonus track you unlock once you beat the game. It's a Home Star Runner song, like Trogdor.
- Electric Eye includes the Hellion intro and is a master track.
- The song that's replacing I Want Candy is still unknown, so there is still technically one song left.

I agree, no doubt. I personally think half the songs suck. It's all personal opinion, but there's about 5 songs on this game I want to play. 10$ a song.. pretty fucking steep.

Turns out there isn't one song left, so this is the final tracklist and tiers:

1) Opening Licks
(Bang Your Head) Metal Health - Quiet Riot
We Got The Beat - The Go Go's
I Ran (So Far Away) - Flock Of Seagulls (original artist)
Balls To The Wall - Accept
18 And Life - Skid Row

2) Amp Warmers
No One Like You - Scorpions
Shakin' - Eddie Money
Heat Of The Moment - Asia
Radar Love - White Lion
Because, It's Midnite - Limozeen (original artist)

3) String Snappers
Holy Diver - Dio
Turning Japanese - The Vapors
Hold On Loosely - .38 Special
The Warrior - Scandal (original artist)
I Wanna Rock - Twisted Sister (original artist)

4) Return Of The Shred
What I Like About You - The Romantics
Synchronicity II - The Police
Ballroom Blitz - Krokus
Only A Lad - Oingo Boingo
Round And Round - Ratt

5) Relentless Riffs
Ain't Nothin But A Good Time - Poison
Lonely Is The Night - Billy Squier
Bathroom Wall - Faster Pussycat
Los Angeles - X
Wrathchild - Iron Maiden

6) Furious Fretwork
Electric Eye - Judas Priest (original artist)
Police Truck - Dead Kennedys
Seventeen - Winger
Caught In A Mosh - Anthrax
Play With Me - Extreme

Not worth $50, that's for fucking sure.

Homestar Runner is 80's? Really?

There is probably some bonus tracks that will be 90% shit like every other Guitar Hero, as well.

updated the OP.

People are shitting on the soundtrack already? Wow. I'm sure you knew every song that you'd love in GH or GHII before you played it.
There is probably some bonus tracks that will be 90% shit like every other Guitar Hero, as well.
There won't be. Also, the bonus tracks don't suck, you're just an idiot. Please leave, good sir.

In case you guys don't know, "Because, It's Midnite" is another Homestar Runner track. It was on the Strong Bad Sings and Other Type Hits CD. Limozeen is their 80s hair metal band parody.

Oddly enough, it used to be my custom user title for a few weeks in case it looks familiar to anyone.

After seeing the final tracklist I'm not as tempted to buy this. It's not that I won't like a lot of the songs it's just that they don't have that "80s" feel to them. It looks like they dropped the ball here. I will still buy this without hesitation if they release it as DLC for the 360 though (or a stand-alone disc).
More priest? fuck yeah.
My thoughts exactly.

The tracklist is mediocre, at best (counted 11 or 12 songs that I totally love), so I'll be buying this game used after a significant price drop.

For the next GH game, the developer really should hold a poll, let the gamers offer their input on future tracks, and then create the game based on the outcome. I'm sure they'd be able to accomodate several requests, while not having the means to acquire rights to the other songs. I think that a 60's version of the song would be fun. Chuck Berry, Elvis, The Beatles, etc.
Shit, Dokken would have rocked. So would have Motley Crue, Queensryche, and Triumph.
Yep.

So disappointed with this game. Could have beens:

Satriani
U2
Pink Floyd
Yes
Warrant

Many other great bands that could have been added.

I'm getting the impression that they've gotten pretty cocky with this franchise, as this songlist, while not bad, seems to demonstrate that they don't feel like they need to go after the heavy-hitters to move copies. And you know what? They're going to be very right.

I just have the game for the 360, so this is moot for me, even assuming that they pull some "track pack" repackaging horseshit again with these songs. And you know they will. Keep it, Activision.

Really? Compare this list to GH1. I'd say this songlist has more bigname bands and songs people have heard of than GH1 did (definitely true for me, at least). I guess people are expecting much more at this point, and forgetting all the "hidden gems" from before that were surprisingly good and/or just fun to play.

I'm interested to see other people expressing some disappointment over the track list here. I thought I was the only one.

I don't think it's 100% shit, but it's an understatement when I say I'm very underwhelmed by the track list.

It's no surprise, really. Music (and what is good music, or which artists best exemplify a certain genre) is such a subjective beast that you're never going to please everybody. I didn't expect Rock the 80's to cater to my niche tastes, but I'm still disappointed.

I happen to be a fan of the really edgy, dissonent post punk stuff, you know the precursor to New Romanticism and all that, from the early 80's and then certain kinds of 'darker' guitar rock from later in the decade, and I just don't see any of that here. Oh well. Hell, I would have been happy with some more proggy stuff from that decade, but I'm not seeing much of that, either.

I know that's not what Guitar Hero has ever been about. The stuff I like doesn't 'rock' in the big hair, flames on stage kind of way, so I know it was never even considered for inclusion in the game. Sigh.

I'll pass, but the rest of ya, have fun.
They're saving that one for "Keyboard Hero".;)
Then i'll finally be heading to Venus (Venus).
