Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.


Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!



How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.




Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. I picked up FarCry (PC) and Tales of Symphonia (GCN) for a penny each. Stupid me, I picked up Pokemon Sapphire/Ruby thinking it was a penny but it was $14.99. I guess I got confused with Fire Red/Leaf Green.... damn all those Pokemon colors. Anyway, I used credit and will probably keep the pokemon guide since my son does have Ruby and I milked EB for 3 GT4 returns. The other two are available for trade or sale.

Picked up Arc the Lad: End of Darkness and City of Heroes at GameStop yesterday. Looking for a few not so common guides, but really wanting Tales of Symphonia.

Similar thing happened today at EB. While hitting some KB's yesterday I checked an EB in the same mall (Lincolnwood) and found a few penny guides(SWAT 4, Pariah, Vampire the Masquerade, couple others.) Asked the clerk about them and while she was fairly cool about it, said the manager had to clear them from them system before they could give them out. Silly but ok - with penny guides you never know what you're dealing with.

Stopped back today and the manager was there. Dealing with her is a crapshoot because her moods really swing wildly (on some visits she's very nice and others super-bitchy.) Unfortunately, it was one of her bad days because when I asked about the guides she goes "what guides?" I name a couple and she says that there's some mistake becuase she just got an email from corporate that those guides are back off the penny list. I say no problem and ask about another guide when she goes off on a little tirade saying it doesn't matter, all those guides have to have their covers torn off and be returned to the distributor.

I just smiled and had to laugh because while I know she's full of it, it's just penny guides and you can always get them someplace (my regular EB that I buy from the most is really cool.)

After this whole exchange I was taking a quick look through some used games and overhear her talking to the other clerk behind the counter. She goes on about how she was really looking forward to Fire Emblem for the Gamecube and started bragging about how a vendor/rep or some other higher-up was hooking her up with a free copy.

Boy I'm sure glad Carson Daly wasn't there to hear that. :)

My friend who works at TRU bought these on the 26st & just dropped them off to me today. Seems strange to me seeing as no TRU employees mentioned them AFAIK & this was on a Wedsday not a Thursday that he bought them. I though I'd mention it as it may be worth looking into for anyone that still sees these at TRU.

Makes me think that they might be changing how they penny out guides at TRU to prevent bargin hunters from finding out about them but on the other hand that seems like alot of trouble if they would not have the pennied out stuff all done at the same time nationally like they usually do.
 
If anyone has Tales of Symphonia, please see my list. I'll make it worth your while, I really want this one and haven't been able to locate a copy.

it sucks too, the second EB i tried was a no go, as the manager was a comlete JERK about it. the first EB, the guy was very cool about it though.

I went to an EB close to home. The guy who was working there has told me before that I couldn't buy penny guides. But I thought I would try anyway since there was one copy of Tales of Symphonia left. He rang it up and said he couldn't give it to me for a penny. I offered $1, he said $1.50 so I took it for $1.50.

What a turd. I stopped by an EB near my house to grab SCIII on Wednesday. While I was waiting in line, the manager there asked me if I would like to have a Xenosaga II SE guide, since they were pennied out a couple days earlier and they we're tossing them. I don't know the guys there that well, so it's not like they kept it just for me.

Did he pocket the 1.50? If so, he could get fired for that.

Awesome on the TRU stuff, thanks OP! I have been waiting on some more penny guides to come. I wonder if there is more, since that is a bit small of a list...then again, I guess they don't have much to really penny out that's real old, or at least at my store....

Yea, this is really strange. I mean, I still saw tons of Conker and Forza guides at my local TRU, and I think God of War (I actually can't remember, hope it didn't get pennied and I missed it AGAIN).

Can anyone else verify this info? Seems weird TRU would penny out guides on a different day then their set markdown time. I can't imagine word got to corporate, or corporate would care enough to do something like this.

On a different note, did anyone notice Best Buy got in a TON of new guides? It seems really weird, espically since they don't seem to sell except when they are marked down to a penny. Plus it's almost the first of the month... isn't that when they generally drop some guides down? Tommorrow could be some new guide drops, hopefully. I honestly don't know what could go, other than Halo 2 and maybe Pokemon Emerald.

My BB has gotten tons of new guides too. There's a Ninja Gaiden Black stack rivaling that of Halo 2. However, I noticed the guides at my BB actually sell. There were huge stacks of X-Men Legends II and Ultimate Spider-Man I was eyeing and waiting for a penny eventually, but people actually bought them all.

I was never able to get guides for GT4 or God of War because they actually all sold.

Stopped by the EB I usually shop at yesterday. Wasn't really there to buy anything, just to meet a friend. While I was there I heard the asst. manager talking to one of the other employees. The other employee was asking about the guides (which they had already pulled - I checked when I came in) that were in the back, wanting to know if she could have some. I mentioned to the asst. manager that I had overheard & asked if they had a spare ATL guide - the only one I missed from my first EB stop that I really wanted. He knows me and is a cool guy, so he said that yes he thought they did & went back and grabbed it for me.

They get their money outta me anyway, the night before he was working when I bought SC3 & the collector's guide. ;)

I can say that my TRU's guide selection is lacking abit :D I know that my store never carried Destroy All Humans or Devil May Cry 3 from what BenBoxer as posted as being pennied out. They never even carried the guide for Burnout 3 at this store either.

It's about time for that Morrowind guide to drop down too.

I flipped through their guide, everything else was brand new and too soon for it to drop. Only other thing I can think of is Madden 06.

Does anyone know the right way to correctly identify penny guides? I am going to hit them up as soon as they open (I'll be in the area), but the media dept. are a bunch of assheads.

Do you find someone to scan the price, or just take a ton up to the register and hope to get lucky?

Remember last month that the PC guides dropped on Monday, but the console games didn't drop until a couple of days later. And as tomorrow is still October, it might not happen until next Monday. And even then, nothing might happen at all, its always a crapshoot with Best Buy. Just when you think there's a pattern involved, they'll change it!
I doubt Madden 06 will drop anytime soon, they only pennied out Madden 05 a couple of months ago...

fuck how the hell did we miss those! My TRU had at least 5 or 6 DMC 3s I wanted. argh, and a couple fables to if I recall. prolly too late to get em too, and even then I won't have a chance till Friday, when they sure as hell won't be there. Man, we usually know TRU markdowns ahead of time, and we didn't even know this on ON time.

I went today to our TRU and found a bunch of Smackdown Vs. Raws and one Capsule Monster, and I was shot down at the register for the first time in nearly a year trying to get the CM guide. So it looks like penny guides are DOA there now, especially with all the new hires having to ask about them, which is what happened to me. =\

Damn, damn, damn, damn, they also fixed the green tag glitch too I assume. I contributed it to just the girl ringing it up wrong, but if this is happening too, might have to find another TRU

I guess it would make sense that TRU (and most other stores) discontinue their Fable guides since there's a new Fable: Lost Chapters guide out now. Of course, it'd be nice if TRU actually carried that game there in my neck of the woods. :roll:

I also went to an EB and asked about the ToS guide and they told me it was pennied out and they didn't have any copies. Nothing was said about them being trashed.

Still a bunch of previous PC pennied games at BB. Picked up Matrix Online, GTA VC, and LOTR Battle for Middle Earth.

The GT glitch was still good to go as of last night, because I used it then. Did you go today, 'cause the B2G1F sale ended as of closing last night. ^_~

I know how you feel. I was looking for a Brothers in Arms guide that had pennied out and found both the Matrix Online guide as well as the game, when I took them up front, there was a newbie working at the EB counter and I asked him to price check the games. He looks at the tagged prices and says, they are $29.99 for the game and $14.99 for the book (that was the first big giveaway). I politely ask, can you just scan them to see if the prices are up to date, he scans and then his eyes bulge out and he rescans both items, then says, the system must be out of wack cuz they show up at a price of 1 cent. I can sell you the game for the listed price of $29.99. I say, the games pretty old, I don't think its worth that much. Finally I figured that since the Matrix ONline is an online subscription thing anyway, its not worth the hassle of going through the arguement of the scanned pricing should take precedence over his arbitrary price gouging, and so I just bail and head over the KB Toys to see if there are any good games on clearance there.

Oh well.

Surprising that it dropped from $14.99 to $9.99.

The only intermediate guide drops have been SW3 to $7.99 (before being pennied out) and Clone Wars to $2.49, plus this one.

For $10, I'd actually think about buying it. Yes, it's not a penny, though $10 is more reasonable IMHO than $15 or $20.
 
Went to one TRU. Nothing. They must've pulled all the pennied guides between the 26th and today. If I had the list last week, I would've been able to get most of them. I remember the one store had pretty much all of them. Oh, well.
