These trade-in values are really low!
While that may be true, if you combine the games with the right promotion they can work to your advantage. There are knowledgeable people in this thread that are normally willing to help.

Is there any way to look at what the previous values reported on a game?
You can search through this thread and previous ones to see what a game has been reported in the past. With the TIV Tracker you can sort by date and then go through the list of past updated values through that as well. Can I trade-in sealed games?
No. You might come across the rare GameStop that would let you do it, but they are going to open them anyway.

I don't want to get hassled about the values I post, how can I get the information out there?
If you do not feel comfortable or willing to put the values in the thread you have two options available. You can input them in the TIV tracker or you can send them to me via PM. Either way the database and these lists will be updated. Putting them into the TIV tracker does save me some time later on.

Do trade-ins have to have their original case, insert and manual?
No, however it will be YMMV on if they charge you a refurbish fee for them in that condition. Most GameStops wont charge a fee but there are some that charge for incomplete games.

Will they accept my game if it is really beat up?
YMMV. It really all depends upon the employee you get. Some will charge refurbish fees, some wont, some wont accept the game and others just take them without a second glance.

What are the refurb fees on games?
There appears to be set prices for set value ranges. We aren't 100% certain on the splits just yet. Here is what we have currently:
$0.25-$2 Value: $0.75 Refurb Fee
$2.01-$4 Value: $1 Refurb Fee
$4.01-$7 Value: $2 Refurb Fee
$7.01-$10 Value: $3 Refurb Fee
$10.01 & Higher Value: $4 Refurb Fee
This information isn't guaranteed by any mean and we are still working on nailing it down.

What are the refurb fees on consoles?
They are listed in the hardware TIV section, highlight in red.

I have a Collector's/Limited/Special edition of a game, do I have to trade-in all of the extras?
No, but there are a handful of games that their variations have separate listings at GameStop: Madden 09 Anniversary Edition, Battlefield: Bad Company Gold Edition, and a few others.

Why didn't the percent bonus go for my accessory for a system that was included?
Unless stated otherwise, and they are rarely included, the bonuses never apply to accessories. Except the EDGE card of course.

I traded in a bunch of games for the "Trade X, get $X bonus" promo and it gave me the percentage bonus instead?
I can't give concretes on why this happens. GameStop computers are normally pretty good at giving you the better promo. In the case of a percentage bonus being run at the same time as a "Trade X, get $X" promo, things can get messy. The system appears to only give one promo on games per transaction so if you had a few games that you want to go to the percentage bonus and a stack for the "Trade X, Get $X" it will regularly apply the percentage to all of the games. Your best bet is to do all "Trade X, Get $X" games in one transaction on their own. The GameStop clerk may say that the system will figure it all out, tell them you want a separate transaction anyway. As always, check your receipt before you leave the store.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
YMMV. The official policy is no, but there are some GameStops that overlook that rule.

Can I trade in a defective/broken console?
For the most part yes. If it powers on but doesn't play games, they will take the console as a refurb unit and put a refurb fee on the console. The refurb fee on the console will vary on the price of the console so those numbers will change. You are still required to trade in everything required listed in the question directly above. They will not, however, take RROD 360 consoles. There may be stores that still do it, but official policy is to not take them in.

What is the difference between PowerUp Rewards and PowerUp Rewards Pro?
The basic card is free and only allows you to acrew points when spending money. The Pro card costs $14.99 and is basically the same as the previous EDGE program.

How much does a PowerUp Rewards Pro subscription cost?
It costs $14.99 and is good for a year. It also comes with a 1-year subscription to Game Informer magazine.

What bonuses come with having an PowerUp Rewards Pro card?
You will get an extra 10% trade-in credit on the base value of the game, extra 10% off the purchase of pre-owned games and 10% off new strategy guides.

Does the Power Up Rewards Card give me a bonus on hardware trade-ins?
No. You will only get the bonus for games and accessories.

What if I want cash instead of credit, what do they deduct?
If you decide that you want cash instead of credit, they will take 20% off the base values and promos will not apply.

Does promo "....." have a minimum trade-in value?
If the promo has a minimum trade-in value requirement, it will be listed in the promo. If it isn't there, then there is no limit. However, as with all trades, they are subject to manager approval so the manager could have setup his own little rule-set requiring a minimum of whatever.

I used a Power Trade promo for a pre-order, can I cancel that pre-order and get the credit or move it to another game I want?
Yes on both accounts. However, if you do a bunch of the power trades and just straight drop the pre-order you could create some ill-will between yourself and the employees you cancel on. However, if you look at the wordings on promos, they can remove the bonus trade-in value if they decide to.

I just tried to use a promo that has a select list of games eligible, but they say my game isn't eligible anymore, what gives?
Basically they have the right to change the eligible games at any time. They tend to update these frequently so as to lock out any easy/cheap games. It's best to check the eligible list the day of your trade.

Can I stack two different trade-in promos?
No. The only thing that will stack with trade-ins is your EDGE card. Some will report success, but this requires a manual override and is very YMMV.

If I pay for an item using all credit on my card, do I have to pay sales tax?
This varies depending upon the state you live in.

If I buy a used copy of a game that requires an online pass for multiplayer, will it come with an online pass?
If you purchase a used title published by either Sony or WB you get an online pass from GS on your receipt. That's also why the used copies are $55 instead of $48 when the MSRP is $60.

No GS issued passes of games published by EA, THQ, etc. On those titles you're totally dependent on the previous owner not using the code.

My state doesn't charge sales tax on purchases made by credit, why is gamestop.com charging me tax?
It is just the way they have designed their system. The best theory we have seen is that since you are only inputting the number off of the back of the card, it isn't going to pick up the programming from the specially tagged EDGE cards. Some kind of programming that gets input from their system that wont show up when only inputting the number off the back of the card.

Traded in my Ipod Touch 16gb with the broken headphone jack, I got $71.00 for before bonuses even through the website listed $84.00. The very hot girl behind the counter said she listed it in very-good condition and thats why it got knocked down. I was going to keep it but she kept pushing her boobs together in her very low cut shirt and now I dont remember what happened. All I know is my copy of NHL 13 is paid off and after the 30% bonus I got like $84.00 more dollars added to my PUR Card.

Do Ipod trade-ins get the extra 10% added for the PUR Card or are they treated like a hardware trade-in with no 10% bonus from the card?

I normally don't complain about Gamestop but I went through hell today just to get a 3DS XL upgrade. A lot happened and I was there for a LONG time arguing but here is the short version:

First of all the girl was trying to tell me that I couldn't play my old DS games on the 3DS. Then she was telling me that the trade in value for a DS Lite was $2.00.

I told her that the website says there is a promo where you get $40 for it if you put it towards a 3DS XL. She kept insisting that there's no way a DS Lite would be $40 because it is old and that she had never heard of such promo. After arguing for a while she decided to ask another one of the employees who claimed that the promo ended a long time ago.

Finally a girl who I assume is the manager comes in and says "What are you doing? You rang up the DS Lite Adapter.. that's why it says $2" The girl at the register still insisted that I was wrong and reluctantly scanned the DS Lite properly and voila! $40!

I hate the fact that these people don't know the promos going on in their own stores and would rather argue with you all night than simply look it up.

This all occurred after they spent a long time fighting amongst each other over a missing 3DS XL. (I asked for a blue and they couldn't find it) Despite the fact that I told them I was okay with the red one, they gave me an attitude as if I was DEMANDING a blue one. Boy, I can't wait to send in this feedback...

Imagine how many pre-orders she must get just by doing that to some of the male customers while they are being rung up. Even if they don't keep the pre-ordrers, I doubt they'd cancel them on her. Definitely sexist, but she could probably talk some men into pre-ordering the worst game, or games, while doing that.

Lonely nerds being distracted by breasts with their spendable money or credit in hand...just seems like a bad situation.

I guess I should be glad that the GameStop I go to always has unkempt-looking guys there.

Got $16 total after buying it for $7.99 from BBY (PMing BBY.com's price and paid for using a GC) and bought a PS Vita Portable Charger for ~$16 (using a GC and GS credit) after applying the credit from ME, so it's like I paid a little over $20 for a charger that goes for upwards of $45-$50 on Amazon. Good day. :)
 
I tried to trade in an Xbox 360 controller and place a preorder for Tekken and New Super Mario Bros. Wii U for the extra 30%, but the system wouldn't allow it. Does anyone know what's going on? The ads and marketing material in the store had the same exact details as the one posted in the OP except it explicitly stated that you could trade in only games and not accessories or hardware.

The last time I was in one of my local stores the chick behind the counter was so fucking cute she could have sold me back the games I just traded in.

Neither of my stores knew about it other than just games, but they were super cool and nice about it. One guy tried to be like it's just games, but I pulled it up on my phone and all three of them were like, "Well, your completely right." I was trading in an iphone btw. It took them forever to finally get it through, in the end the manager or lead that was there just credited me the difference I think, but in the end I got what I was supposed to get.

Like I said, the guy that was waiting on me was really cool, they could have all easily denied it and just been like, "It's only on game trades!"

I never do the surveys hardly but I'm going to this time to leave them good feedback

Looks like it is gone. All there is on the website is the 25% for 4 or more games and 30% power trade towards select pre-orders.

Any deals on trading in hardware coming down the pipe, I really wish they had that deal from May still in place and I could get $150 for a PS3? BTW do they just check a/v or do they check hdmi as well?
 
Got denied the 30% when I traded my ds3 for borderlands 2. Told him the website states anything, but the manager himself tried to tell me its whatever his computer does and his book only states games. I love GS....
 
For 360 controllers, I have one where a few buttons stick. Do they charge a refurb fee or do they just flat out not take them? Would be nice to get $20-30 for them since I will never use them again.

Did he scan the barcode on the promo sheet and the computer system didn't add the bonus, or did he just refuse to scan it altogether? I thought some have reported receiving the 30% bonus on accessories when the employee scans the promo barcode without requiring any special overrides.
 
Man if that's what they're giving for a Wii even before bonuses, I will likely never trade it in. Seems crazy to me to dump hardware for less than $50.

Well they are selling them for $79.99. With the bonus it gets $39. That seems pretty par for the course and some games have way worse margins.

Pretty sure they won't even take it. If you want to unsticky them yourself, it's not too hard. A few screws using this tool, pull apart and pop the buttons out and wipe them (and the holes) good with some isopropyl alcohol and piece back together.

I've had to fix so many damn 360 controllers, thanks to my daughter. They need to make a kid-proof controller that is 100% liquid proof.

why dont you out of courtesy and respect for fellow consumers not give a shoddy product for trade? i mean i dont mind dealing with flippers because at least when you buy their preowned products its brand new games...but when people talk about trading in their half broken products thats what irks me. what i hate the most is people saying, oh i hope gs will only test my system for 10 minutes because itll break. in all honesty these guys just resell taking your word. the worse thing is u cant test the product till you take it home, then you waste time and gas to go back and to return the product.

I dont know. I traded in a six axis and two DS3 at two different GS's. All they did was hit the PS button and randomly hit the buttons. The X button on two of those controllers were pretty sticky I felt as the membrane was just getting worn out. They took them no questions asked.

Not sure about the whole philosophy of not trading in shoddy hardware. If GS checks the system and determines it a fair trade that's their problem. It should be THEIR responsibility to not give shoddy products to their customers.

You know the risks going in of buying a used product, especially hardware. GS also knows the risks of taking them in as trades. If they test it and it works and they give you the credit after you signed. Then that is a good deal for you. GS should have checked it more thoroughly or revise their policies to account for that.

I think they scan in the serial # on 360s to make sure they aren't banned so at least their's that.

edit: Also when I've done the 30% bonus for preorder. When I went back to cancel the preorder the line that always gets them to stop is "I preordered it on steam instead". If they say you can preorder it from them just say well I cant cancel the steam preorder.

I did not know if they fix slightly faulty controllers or if it had to be in full working condition. Calm down I had no intention of trying to trade it in if they weren't able to fix it.

Anyways, thanks for the tips on unstickying the buttons, I will look in to fixing the buttons sooner or later I already have 3 still fully functional controllers and friends who can bring their own as a last resort so I am in no rush.

They do not give us enough hours/time to have someone dedicated to testing all items that are traded in. It's at the employee's discretion to either accept/deny a controller trade in. How I usually do it is mess around with the joysticks and buttons to make sure they arent broken/sticky, and it doesnt look like it was tampered with I usually take it in.

gotta question, what is the best way to apply for Gamestop, a basic position of labeling games, cleaning or register jobs, all or a mix if the duties are interchangeable. I've looked online and only see manager spots, best to ask for an application in store?

GS is one of the few places that still does paper applications in-store. Each store holds seperate applications for the time alloted by either corporate or state law so if you live in an area w/multiple stores you have to apply at each one. Only exception is for stores just opening up, which will usually have a sign telling you where to apply.

Print an application online through GS website. Fill it out, attach your resume to it if you have one. Most stores are going to be looking for seasonal hires (usually in October) so your best chance to get hired is now.

Here's what I think you should have/be able to do:
  • 18 years or older
  • Sales experience is a plus (This includes knowledge about all video games)
  • Experience with POS system is a plus
  • Keep store clean/organized
  • Great customer service
