PRESS RELEASE

Dec. 19, 2006 – Nintendo’s wildly popular Wii™ home video game system not only revolutionizes how people play games, but it also entices new people into the world of gaming. On Dec. 22, Nintendo and Opera Software bring the Internet to the living room couch with a free trial version of the Opera Web browser. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can download a free trial Opera browser to activate the Internet Channel of the Wii Menu and begin surfing the Web.

Starting Dec. 22, Trial Version Lets Users Surf from the Comfort of their Couches

“In addition to providing innovative and exciting new ways to play, Wii also offers further services and entertainment for all the family. This newest Wii Menu Channel is just the latest example of how we are doing this” says Nintendo of Europe Marketing Director, Laurent Fischer. “Wii is the perfect console for everyone to enjoy and this is being reflected in the phenomenal sales across Europe. ”

“Our software brings the power and reach of the Internet to the hottest video game system available,” says Scott Hedrick, Executive Vice President, Devices at Opera Software. “Wii’s unique interface adds a new dimension to our browser, making it a useful tool that the whole family will enjoy operating with ease.”

The final version of the Opera browser will be available at the end of March 2007, and will be free for all Wii owners to download through the end of June. After June 2007, the browser will be available for download in the Wii Shop Channel for 500 Wii Points.

The Internet Channel provides an optimal Web browsing experience on people’s home television. The Adobe Flash-enabled trial version of the Opera browser puts the Internet right onto owners’ television screens and lets them browse with ease, enabling them to check sports scores, plot maps or visit their favorite Web sites. Multiple family members can gather around the television to plan a holiday or make online purchases. The pointing abilities of the Wii Remote allow users to click on links they want to see or to zoom into any part of the screen through the motion of the controller. In addition, the Wii Remote can be used with an on-screen keyboard to make text entry as easy as point and click.

The Forecast Channel, provided by Weathernews which allows users to check out weather information for anywhere in the world using a 3-D globe, is available from 19th December.

The Internet Channel joins the four channels which have been available since launch: Disc Channel, Photo Channel, Mii™ Channel and Wii Shop Channel as well as the newly available Forecast Channel. The Internet Channel, Forecast Channel and Wii Shop Channel are available at no charge, though they require Wii owners to have a high-speed Internet connection.
Supposedly Super Mario Bros. and R-Type on the VC for Xmas.
Check the VC thread. Donkey Kong Country on Christmas.

Thanks Linkin, they still dont really say what the "trial" is for and whats going to be the diffrences between the March release. But oh well I am sure we will all find out before long. I wonder if I can access utube, or that XM radio site and play that stuff.

Funny you should mention that thread since the list you posted was deemed to have been a fake.

I think I heard somewhere (can't remember) that this initial phase would be a beta phase. Maybe that's what they mean by trial.

Wait so it is only going to cost 500 Wii points holy fuck. I thought it was going to cost 3000 points, damn I love my Wii 10x more now since I can CAG on the TV for only 500 points in june and free till then :D.

I take that press release to mean that the early adopters of the system will get the browser for as a free download from March until June. Are they gonna make you re-download and pay for it in June? I'm thinking we're getting it free so-long as you download before they start making you pay for it.

-G
That's been my understanding - and what they've been leading us to believe - since the beginning.

Definitely going to try and download this during the free period. However, I doubt I'll surf the web on the TV much, though.

Most definitely free forever if downloaded before June. From the Nintendo press release (finally) confirming 12/22 availability:

The final version of the Opera browser will be available at the end of March 2007, and will be free for all Wii owners to download through the end of June 2007. After June, users who haven’t already downloaded the Opera browser can go to the Wii Shop Channel to download it for 500 Wii Points.

I agree but hey, free stuff is always good.

Will be glad to get this. One caveat for all you porn hounds: Will you be able to view QT or WMV movies using this? I know it's Flash-enabled, so YouTube is good to go.

I hope it'll be available just after midnight on the 21st like the Forecast channel was so I can download it before I fly home for the holidays.

Me too, I'm the in the same boat, or plane....whatever.

I just downloaded the forecast channel. I thought I would use it this once and then discard it as my setup is right next to my computer. However, I really enjoyed the interface and can see myself using this in the future. As for the web browser, I still have my doubts as if I will ever get any use out of it. Can't beat free.
I cant wait for the browser, but honestly, my TV is right next to my computer :p
yea, but to be able to sit in your bed and browse the internet is awesome.
Do you guys think Nintendo will restrict what is viewable with the web browser?
I doubt it.
I wonder what they mean by trial?
I personally think that the browser is not completely finished but they are pushing it out early to sort of compete with the PS3 in terms of functionality. We may just be essentially beta testing.
beta's of Opera are fine. its beta's of IE im scared of.
So true.

While not Opera, I find beta versions of Firefox infintable more stable than final releases of IE, to say nothing of Firefox's final versions.

I can't forsee using the Wii browser much at all, as I have a computer hooked up to the same TV that the Wii is hooked up to, but I look forward to playing with it. And I could see it being useful, especailly for people without a computer nearby their TV.
I don't have a computer in my room, so this is gonna be bad ass. I can't believe it's being released this close to the Forecast Channel!
Same here. I'll never leave my room. But I'll need a keyboard for the Wii.

"While not Opera, I find beta versions of Firefox infintable more stable than final releases of IE, to say nothing of Firefox's final versions."

Firefox isnt as stable as IE.

or at least not on any computer ive tried them on.

That's too bad, I was expecting the final version at launch, instead we get a beta version a month after launch?

I know Im stoked about the internet channel. This will prove to be very convenient for me. Also hoping it launches shortly after midnight.

I hope it launches at 3 AM eastern so the servers don't get fucked up at that time and I will be still on at 3, lol. I will be checking the VC every 15-30 mins from 12 am EST to 4 AM EST.
4 hours and a little bit till the 22nd... If it works we need to do some CAG posting via Wii :)
If I get it tonight that is the first thing I am doing after a you tube check to make sure that works.
