Case 4. Gumshoe's secret weapons

No content spoilers please, but how do you use them? Is there a new game play mechanic I don't understand or do you have to present them to someone to get them to work?

If the latter I've shown them all to Lotta Heart and she's poo poo'd em all.

You mean the dog, etc?

You can "check out" (like a library) one of them at a time. One of them is the right one, the other two are red herrings. You don't need to "use" it, you just need to be in possession of it in a particular place.
