PlayOn Media Server For $19.99

-HAZE-

CAGiversary!
This is one of the best things I've ever bought. I use it every day to watch videos on Hulu and Netflix. I actually got a Netflix account because of this excellent program. They are always updating and adding new features, they recently added an option to stream your own files from your PC to your PS3, 360, or Wii. They also have plugins available now, one of which allows you to watch all videos on the NFL Network. That's great for me because my cable company does not offer the channel. It's a one time fee and you get free updates for life.

Plus plugins are available for download from playonplugins.com that include:
 • Adultswim
 • Channel9
 • Food Network
 • GameTrailers.com
 • HGTV
 • Local Files
 • NBA
 • NFL
 • Plugin Organizer
 • Podcasts (OPML Player) -- with dozens of available feeds!
 • International channels: Danish DR and Spanish TVE
*Adult - YouPorn and RedTube*

At $19.99 it's a steal.

Coupon Code - PLAYON1999

Ends 6/30/09 (email says June 31st. June has 30 days)

*Update 6/29* Hulu has disabled access from the PS3 BROWSER. Hulu still works with PlayOn. This is even more of a reason to get this great program.

Yes, that's great for files on your PC, which PlayOn just added, but the real benefit is streaming Neflix, Hulu, CBS, ESPN, CNN, and Youtube to your PS3, XBOX, or Wii.

PlayOn is great, but it's been way too expensive in the past; but at $20, I'm probably going to bite.

I was in the beta and was really pleased, but seeing as competing software--though not as functional--is typically free, I refused to pay anything more than $20.

I got this coupon in my e-mail, too.

I downloaded it during its beta phase as well.. good stuff. Thanks for the deal posting. I nearly bought it a couple weeks back but decided against it. Glad I waited!

Glad to see people jumping on this deal. Once you have it and use it, you will realize that it is well worth it. Their support is phenomenal also.

If they added Amazon VOD(I know they are working on it), I would be all over this but they have been working on it for months now so we will see

I can't confirm if it works or not since I don't have amazon and I just got the trial for PlayOn, but it does have a place for your Amazon VOD info.

I did a trial back before the price went up, last time it was on CAG. It was worth it to me but I didn't bite and have regretted it since. Getting it this time though.

Thanks OP

Hey, you forgot to add:

 • RedTube Adult Video
 • YouPorn Adult Video
Gotta have our pr0n!

Hmmm, good timing. Just got a new PSP. Looks like this will work over Remote Play. Anyone have any experience using this on a PSP?

I am trying to trial out now. Both my 360 and PS3 use wireless internet. The PS3 has some really bad lag issues with using this sadly...My 360 does as well, but only on the HD content from Gametrailers. Looks like I'll be using this with my 360 and with SD video. Oh well, still awesome and for $20. Does anyone know when the coupon expires? I'd like to get this as late to the end of the trial, just in case I change my mind toward the end of it.

We want you to start off Summer right - so we are offering you PlayOn for only $19.99 (yup - that's $20 off). But, this offer is for a very limited time - until June 31, 2009, and is only being offered to our existing trial users.

doesnt seem that appealing considering I can stream files from my PC to my PS3 using Windows Media Player for free and the its browser already an play videos from most major websites

Great post OP thanks!

I used the beta and really liked the program. Wasn't willing to pay $40 for a license but now that it is apparently out of beta and for only $20 - that's hard to pass up.

It's worthwhile if you're a netflix subscriber and don't own a 360 - it works really well. The Hulu stuff is pretty nice too.
I use tvosity
The Pro version is $30 for the Pro (which allows Hulu and the like) and I am wondering if anyone has used both of these. I don't need it to stream media from my PC. I want it for netflix on my PS3, and Hulu and other web video services on my 360/PS3. Just wondering what peoples opinion are on both of these.

thank you for this, always been interested in this and since i don't care to pay for XBL Gold, this is a good alternative for Netflix and my PC can't play Hulu videos well at 480p, but I'm sure my PS3 can.

Downloaded the trial and will buy for $20 probably tomorrow.

This was way overpriced at $40, so I'd call this more of a realization of actual value than a sale :) Been using TVersity, which has less robust features (but does Hulu, my main reason for needing it). TVersity Pro is free though, which made PlayOn a ripoff at $40. At $20, I'm tempted, just for some of the better features, like browsing all of Hulu without having to manually add everything to my library. Thumbnails are nice too. TVersity has a bad habit of freezing during Hulu commercials and also screwing up the volume controls on my PC.

Should also note that it's not really lifetime upgrades... Read the fine print. If they release what they consider a major version of the software, you'll have to buy another license or continue using your outdated version (which probably won't work for long due to sites like Netflix and Hulu changing the way their sites work and feed videos).

I bought PlayOn for $30 when it first came out of beta. I'm glad the PlayOn folks reward my support of their product by charging me more back then than they charge now. Grrrrr

Hey, I like the idea of the playon server, but I had dled the trial before, and the lag was *terrible.* All the little boxes were green 'good,' and I had put my ps3 and compy through the same router instead of wireless, but it still took a good hour to watch a choppy 1/2 hr Daily Show.

Did I screw up somewhere, or does that just happen with some consoles/computers/internets?

Can anyone tell me how the ESPN integration is with this prog? Does it stream games and sportscenter, or just little one-off videos?

Dude seriously. I bought a game a year ago for 60 bucks, now it is only 20 everywhere. How DARE they lower the price to sell more copies. I demand a refund.

LOL, exactly.

what exactly can u watch with this PlayOn? sorry if its a stupid question, but I am just a little confused. So is it like you can watch cable without having to pay for cable? For example, I can watch sports games that normally only play on cable channels with this?

Read the first post and the plugins.

Guys, a heads up that Hulu has disabled access from the PS3 BROWSER with the latest firmware upgrade.

This is more of a reason to get PlayOn. Hulu will still work with PlayOn.

http://gizmodo.com/5303546/ps3-no-longer-supporting-hulu

And the email I got said it ends June 31st, but since June only has 30 days, I'm guessing it ends tomorrow.

two things I thought I'd point out...

playon does not have an agreement with hulu and there have been outages in the past when hulu updates their software whereas playon needs to figure out how to get it to work again. they usually arent too long though maybe a day or two at most. just realize you could lose hulu at anytime depending on how locked down nbc and the other companies want it.

it doesnt stream the highest quality at this time I believe. for example I will hook up my laptop with hdmi out using hulu desktop with media center remote and I get noticeably better quality than streaming through playon.

position: I payed the $40 and am still pleased with the purchase although this new hulu desktop is very convenient. it was just recently released though. if you dont have an hdmi out solution with a remote/bluetooth mouse then playon is still very good especially for $20

lol @ playon being overpriced @ $40. you people are ridiculous. this thing pays for itself in 2 seconds when you realize you can drop your $80 *per month* cable bill!

plus that $40 is getting you constant updates, nearly weekly.

to the person who said their performance was choppy and laggy.. never had that issue. maybe your pc needs a little upgrading, or your internet is slow(it would have to be REALLY slow, since it worked fine on my old 1.5mbps connection).

in response to hulu outages, they have been few and far between recently. hulu is trying their hardest to keep themselves OFF of tv screens, and playon has held on through it all where several other similiar servers have not.

I downloaded the trial yesterday after getting the email special, but everything i try to play says the data is corrupted, anyone have any ideas. my only thought is that its Win 7 Related, is anyone successfully running Win 7 and PS3?

I'm running Windows 7 and PS3.

Try Stopping and Restarting the server from the PlayOn settings. Also, make sure quality is set to "Auto".

If that doesn't work, try using Revo Uninstaller to uninstall Microsoft Silverlight. I used to have that issue, but it's working for me now with Silverlight.

That might fix it though.

This sounds interesting, i like that they have revision3 on there by default.

I tried my damnedest to ignore this deal but I just couldn't. Tried the beta a long time ago and I loved, I just didn't want to fork out 30 bucks for it at the time. 20 though is definitely the right price and now that they have plug-ins just makes the deal even sweeter. Definitely worth it to any of you on the fence still.

If you still aren't convinced download the trial and check out everything you can watch with it.

Dont even have silverlight installed its a fairly fresh version of Win 7.

When I tried the beta a long while back, it didn't work well for me with my 360. But I just gave the trial another go today and it's so much better than when I used it before. Definitely seems to be worth the $20.

It is definitely worth $20 and I am a cheapskate.

also, Hulu is blocking its use through the PS3 browser so this is a must for PS3 owners as Hulu can't block it. Still don't understand why Hulu did that.

hulu can and has made changes so hulu didnt work through playon, but playon support has found ways around it thus far.
