Can you buy a used PS4 from GameStop or borrow one from a friend, buy PS+, back your saves up into the cloud and return the PS4? Or would it initialize the thumb drive since it's not your original PS4?
My friend that I gameshare with has a PS4. I assume it would want to format the drive but I could try if I can find the drive. I can log into my account on his PS4 but he doesn't have any of my game saves on there. I guess you are asking can I get my backed up thumb drive, put it in his PS4, transfer the saves, get a trial on PS+, save the games to the cloud and then access them on my reset PS5? I can try but I am thinking it will want to format that USB.

I don't know if the USB thing will work without your console. They're encrypted, and they key might be tied to the console you originally used to create the back-up. I don't think it's a key across all your accounts, but I'm unsure there.

Edit: It looks like you can restore those saves on your PS5. Again, I've never gone through the process.

It probably won't work. I am just trying to figure out every possibility before I reset the PS5 and lose that data forever. No one here has offered any other solution and every google and youtube vid gives the same advice. Boot safe mode, try 1-5. If that doesn't work, you need to reset the console. The supervisor I talked to told me that he can make a note that I want my data saved but he's never heard of them actually doing it.

I added an edit to another post, but you probably won't see it.

You'd still lose the saves from your past year or whatever, but you'd at least get 6 years of it back. Assuming it works.

I can't think of a single save older than a month that I need for any reason, why do you need saves from 7 years ago?
For reasons I already gave. I have not finished all my PS4 games yet let alone some PS5 games. I will have to start all of those games over from the very beginning. Certain games I go back to once in a while to get different trophies or advance in the game. That will all be wiped out. All my progress in Rift Apart is gone. I had a RE7 save that I almost 100% and I was going for the other ending. Gone. The list goes on and on. It sucks.

So you don't care about game saves so clearly, you don't back up your game saves and don't care if they get lost. I am so glad I played MLB The Show on Series X. That would be 8 months of game time gone if I played it on PS5.

I appreciate the help but that guide won't work. I am pretty sure once I put the thumb drive with my PS4 saves into the PS5, it will want to format it thus erasing the game saves. I can definitely try though. Sony people didn't mention this to me on the phone even though I told them about the USB drive but maybe they are clueless.

I just finish my games when I'm playing them and don't pray to the PlayStation gods that if I'm not backing them up that they'll be there in 5 years when I want to play them again.

Not being able to back up saves to USB drives and no file management system on the PS5 is insane. I've got over a hundred games on my PS4 between my console and extended, the majority are pick up and play digital games, having all of those app icons on the xmb would be a nightmare.

Wait what? I can't backup saves to a USB thumb drive on PS5??? Google says I can.

I found my PS4 thumb drive so that's good at least. Still dreading resetting my PS5 but I can put the thumb drive in and see what happens. I believe I backed up data 2 years ago so that's something at least. Not sure if it works but I will update here when I try.

This is clearly fiction. /s

I lost all my save data on PS3 a LONG time ago and since then I try to have a USB drive plugged into whatever PS console I'm using. Thankfully most of my gaming is done on Xbox where this isn't an issue.

Ahhh ok, seems like they patched that in back in April. If you don't word the search correctly that update doesn't appear.

Now if they would allow folder creation...

EDIT: Wait...no...it seems to be a system backup and restore and not just a save backup option.

For PS4 saves you can still back them up to a USB drive, but PS5 saves it's backup to the cloud with a PS+ sub or nothing. Really hope they change this and allow local USB backup for PS5 saves in the future.

Oh okay that sucks. I wonder what their reason is for that. Were USB saves available when PS4 launched? Maybe Sony adds it in the next big update.

This video shows you can. I am confused.

If that is true that sucks. I know PS5 still lets you import saves from USB because I had already done that.

I can barely remember what I had for breakfast this morning, let alone the story off game I was in the middle of playing 7 years ago

Smooth brain king strikes again. Maybe he will spend 6 months posting about this now instead of whether to sell his old system on ebay or trade in to gamestop.

I have a better memory than you obviously.

Damn I thought by now you would have just reset the console lol
Exhausting all options first. I was hoping I could remote play into my PS5 from my phone or laptop but NO ONE here or online suggested that. I also never set up remote play on my PS5 so wouldn't be able to even if I could. I can see stuff from my console on my phone app like all installed games and games on my external HDD but I can't access game saves. You can best believe when I do reset, I am going to set up remote play and back up to my USB frequently from now on. Stupid Microsoft spoiled me. I hope my situation will at least help others here and educate them that Sony's save system isn't very good. I still don't understand their power decision ever since PS4. I can unplug my Xbox from rest mode anytime I want and it powers up when I plug it back in like nothing ever happened. Sony acts like I just punched their child.

This is why I was afraid of anything going wrong and never put my ps5 on standby mode unless it was an accident. Also didn’t plug in any external hard drive on it. Heard those have been fixed but u never know tho. ’m just glad I still have my og ps4. Also got a ps plus cuz I don’t like missing out on free games plus cloud saves Is a +

Same thing happened to me. Now I just use Spotify for everything because I am too lazy to try to put it all back together.

I just refunded a game I purchased on PSN. I got the money back on wallet immediately but the game still shows as purchased. Is this normal? Does it take a couple of days?

EDIT: Never mind gone now

Okay so I went ahead and reset the system after trying everything again one more time. It reset it really fast and went to setting it up like I just bought it. I put in my USB thumb drive, went to the proper place and after waiting like 15 seconds, all my PS4 saves showed up! I selected them all and copied them over. I am installing R&C and redownloading PS4 Marvel Puzzle quest to test out if my saves indeed work which I am sure they do. Last time I saved was May 2018 so everything after that is gone but it's better than nothing. Thank you to the people here that cared and tried to help. I will back up my saves to my USB thumb drive much more often from now on. Time to redownload a lot of games and play them all over again. Freaking Sony and their weird power issues.

Huh I'll have to try that and see if PS5 saves actually get transferred over.

Glad u didn’t lose stuff

Only shit I ever really lost was 1TB of porn I downloaded and broke down into categories back in the day after my hard drive died. Sad day that it was.

Actually sticking up for Sony? So I should pay for PS+ even though I already have PS+ with gameshare simply to back up saves on my console I bought in March that has already busted on me? That makes a whole lot of sense. Yes, I should have backed up with a USB flash like I did with my PS4 but I didn't start doing that until 3 years in. I didn't expect that I had to make sure to backup my PS5 that isn't even a year old. Has anyone here ever lost 7 years of playstaton gaming or other systems saves? It really sucks. Besides all my PS4 games I've been playing over the years, I was near the end of Rift Apart and will now have to do that all over again. That's the least of my worries though. Now yes, games I've already beaten and would just start a fresh game if I play them again being gone is one thing, but other games were ongoing and now I will have to start all over again. This just sucks. Microsoft has the best solution in place. Cloud saves for anyone that has a gamertag and internet. Buy a new system and everything is transferred. No subscription necessary.

Why would they help me out and access my saved data? Really? Do you work for Sony? Geez. Can't you be objective? Paying for the cloud should be nothing but convenience. Pay for a service to make sure your data is saved right away or you will have to send it into us and be without your system for 2 weeks. My data shouldn't be gone forever. It's not my fault Sony has a flawed power issue.
Dude you are so off base here it’s hard to believe. YOU are not being objective.

You clearly knew that to backup saves you needed to subscribe to PS Plus. You decide to save 20 or 30 bucks a year knowing you were putting your precious saves at risk. Whether the system software stinks (it does) or their method of putting saves behind a paywall sucks (it does), you absolutely knew this going in and made a conscious decision to save a few dollars.

Glad you didn’t lose everything but FFS. Take some responsibility for making a bad decision.

Actually what 4 pages of this, if 7 years of save are so important that you haven’t finished these games completely, then quit being a cheapskate and either buy a dedicated external HD or pay the $40 for PS+.
Do you have a apartment, home or a car? Then you have to have insurance, PS + is your insurance.

I remember when my PS memory card got corrupted. I had to replay Suikoden from the start and re-collect all 108 stars before playing Suikoden II. It was fun. Any of the games that you lost your saves to that you do not want to replay probably were not worth finishing anyways.

Agreed, but at least they got most of their saves back. I'd just pony up and spend the $30 a year and not worry about it considering how much time was spent over the last few days trying to save them. Another option would be to just subscribe for a month every six months since PS+ purges after that window of time. Jan- sub, backup, cancel, repeat in July. No worries and no messing with thumb drives or whatever because those too can fail.

To add even more insult, Godfall: Challenger Edition is free on the Epic store next week. Don't even need a sub to get that.
Tons of the PS+ games end up free on Epic, if it's not a Sony exclusive I expect it to happen.

Would rather get Judgment than all three of the others combined.

Serious question - why is PS Plus Asia always better? I actually like PS Plus and I want to play that lego game, I'm not complaining. But why does PS Plus Asia always get an extra game, and an extra good game to boot? Why are they selling Asia a superior product to America, what's the logic here?
