Have we recieved any information that PS2 games will look better/run in a higher resolution on the PS3? Anyone with an HDTV knows that non proscan games look like shit, and I really don't want to play an ugly FFXII. :D

I hope so.

I'd pay the $600 for the PS3 just to play FFX with a higher resolution and in widescreen.

I thought they were litterely putting ps2 hardware into the ps3. They said the way you play it now, is the way its going to look. No smooth edges like they have done with the xbox emulation on 360.

I was under the impression that any visual improvements would be marginal since they are basically putting in microchip versions of the PS2 and PS1 hardware. That way, nearly all of the games should work with no issues, unlike the 360. The advantage to the 360, however, is a sizeable improvement on some games.

Even if the games run at a higher resolution, with less loading time, or better filtering, there's no way you can pump out widescreen from a game that never had it.

It's not totally lame though. One of the main reasons I wanted a PS3 was so that I can play all my PS2 games in higher resolution. If it can get rid of the jaggies I'd be happy with the PS2 graphics.

Sony was touting earlier that they would be using hardware and software(which I immediately thought as using some kind of filter) and thus they would one up Microsoft's attempt at backwards compatibility. Unfortunately I don't think it'll happen. It sounds like Sony's just going to stick a PS2 into the PS3 and everything will be the same.

Shows you've never had to play such gems on an HDTV.

A cleaned up FFX that with at the very least progressive scan output would be wonderful, as would it be for many PS2 games. I'm sure even Soul Calibur 3 and Gran Turismo 4 could benefit from it.

And any game with widescreen [letter box] cut scenes would surely take advantage of it.

No, it shows I don't buy brand new systems to play 5 year old games from a system I already own.

Speak for yourself dumb-ass.

One of my big reasons for getting a PS3 is to play all the games I missed out on. My bro took my PS2 a while ago so I missed out on ALOT.

I cant wait to play them through especcially with higher resolution!

God, some of you people are just..

This is the equivalent of wanting to upconvert 480p [regular DVD's] to 1080i..

Upconverting something like Final Fantasy X would help it look better stretched out [since the game is letterboxed] and make the text A LOT more clear...

Is HDMI even capable of using a 480i signal? If it doesn't upconvert (or at least de-interlace) than most PS2 games would require cable switching.

yes an HDMI can carry a 480i signal, but it would be upconverted, then rescaled on the HDMI's bandwidth depending on the source and the display. but yeah, im curious if they will upconvert PS2 games too.

FFX is absolutely not letterbox. The black bars are way too small to call it letterbox. More like slightly different than 4:3 box.

How do you get a game that wasn't programmed with progressive scan to then display it that way? From everything I've heard or seen, PS2 games will look exactly the same as they do now.

Why the hell would you want to "play" through FFX again? The game is just, eww. Those "laughing" scenes still haunt me.

At least FFXII is interesting.

I'd like to comment that if the PS3 doesn't upscale, despite all the complaints about 360 backwards compatibility it will easily be the best. All the other two systems will do is save you the money that you get by selling your previous system, shelf space, and perhaps a connection on the TV.

Posting this because I just thought of how relevent this is.

http://www.xploder.net/products/148/Xploder-HDTV-Player.htm

It's some sort of application that allows you to play PS2 games in higher definition... supposedly. It isn't out yet, and was delayed from a release last month to sometime this month. Honestly, it sounds great, but we'll see if it even works.

For all we know, it could end up being better than the PS3 for playing PS2 games.

That xploder looks really cool but I'd like to see an independent review for it. It's always hard to trust someone that's trying to sell the same product.

That thing keeps being delayed. First it was supposed to come out at the beginning of September, then late September, then the beginning of October...

What the fuck are you talking about? How the hell is a PS3 going to make an audio cd sound better?

They got xbox 1 games that weren't even 480p to be played at 720p on 360. And of course every dvd is only 480i but they have dvd players that upscale to 480p and 720p/1080i.

First, DVD is 480p, not 480i.

Second, 99% (arbitrary made-up statistic) of Xbox games are in 480p. The only one I can think of straight off the top of my head is Hitman... 2, I think? You can check on one of those HD gaming sites that lists every game with 480p, 16:9, etc.

There are plenty of Xbox games that don't display in 480p. These are the ones from my collection:

Crimson Sea
Dead or Alive 3
Deus Ex: Invisible War
Fatal Frame II
GunValkyrie
Indigo Prophecy
Halo
Jet Set Radio Future
KOF: Max Impact
KOF: Neowave
KOF: 02/03
Hitman 2 & Contracts
Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance
NBA Street Vols. 2 & 3
Obscure
Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee & Stranger's Wrath
Outlaw Tennis
Project Snowblind
Samurai Shodown V
Silent Hill 4
Sonic Mega Collection
Splinter Cell
Street Fighter Anniversary Collection
Tiger Woods 2005
Whacked!

Mechassault 2 and Simpson's Hit & Run display in 16 x 9 but not 480p.

Let me correct that list for you, I use a VGA monitor and an X2VGA and it is incapable of displaying 480i games. Most of the ones you listed work perfectly.

The only other games I've tried that aren't 480p are Stolen, Headhunter Redemption, Broken Sword 3, and Metal Slug 3.

Sony's Phil Harrison has stated plainly that games from previous PlayStations will not be enhanced on the PS3. Even those minor items offered by the PS2 for PS1 games will not be found in the PS3 emulation function.

Sony itself has never lent any support to the rumors of PS2 silicon being embedded in the PS3 to enable backward compatibility. (And presumably serve other purposes in PS3 mode, much as the PS1 silicon in the PS2 also handled I/O.)

Even if there were such hardware in the PS3 that would be no handicap in upscaling the resolution, apply anti-aliasing, and other enhancements. Once a frame is rendered and ready for output, handingit over to the RSX for those treatments would be trivial. The signal would need to pass through the RSX anyways since it would be overly complex and wasteful to put redundant video encoders in the PS3, especially since the legacy encoder from the Ps2 would be unable to talk to HDTV display in their native format.

From a technical standpoint there is no good reason not give the old games the same treatment Microsoft has managed for original Xbox games. The challenge is getting the original code running correctly. The enhancements are mainly just apply the GPU hardware after the frame data has exited the emulation shell.

It would appear that Sony just doesn't want the old games to look as good as the PS3 could make them, lest they distract from the PS3's native titles. Not so much a technical issue as a difference of policy between the two companies.

Have you tried any of the SNK games? I can't imagine that working for SamSho or Neowave.

Digimon Rumble Arena 2

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Battle Nexus

XGRA: Extreme Racing

Yeah but are the rest of the games displayable in 480p just using the component cables or would I need a VGA box. I'm not going to buy some more expensive crap just to get a little more graphical quality. I'm not that big of a graphics whore.

I know Tak 2 does support 480p. I forgot to mention Ultimate Spider-Man & Manhunt before, you're right about those. I haven't played most of the rest of those.

That was a cut-and-paste job, not from my own experience. I've actually played only one of them, maybe. The 007 game was the first one that came out on the "next-gen" (current-gen) consoles a few years ago, right? If it's the one I'm thinking of, then that's the one game on the list that I've played.

[quote name='gaelan']\

Also, the audio decoding codecs are much better, since they support 7.1 as well as DTS 6 and lots of the new dolby standards...

It has SACD support, I am pretty sure that means 6 channel analog outputs or at the very least [FINALLY] fully 6 channel SACD through optical or HDMI...

Word is 480p is somewhat of an improvement, 720p has major issues but can sometimes look better, and 1080i is pathetic. Also, using 720p (and I guess 1080i) automatically assumes the game is 4:3 and therefore presents as such. However, for 16:9 games (like God of War and Dragon Quest VIII), it will only allow it to be 4:3. There is no option to change it, so unless your TV as a stretch or zoom mode that support filling the screen in 720p/1080i with a 4:3 image, you're screwed on that.

It sounds like a decent product if you want everything to be in 480p, but I absolutely do not think it's worth $50. Maybe not even $25.
