I wish I could report back with the same enthusiasm about the games I've tried from this update, lol. Not feeling Metrico at all. And Proteus? Just pure unadulterated pretentious bullshit. I can do weird and esoteric. I can do unconventional. But I played for 15 minutes and deleted it. @Squirrel, you reviewed this?! Link me if so.

Guess I'll give Swapper another try on PC now since some you like it.

On a positive note, Fez is still freaking sublime. I don't care how big a dick the dev is. Love it. Going to try to 100% it this time.

Also playing Far Cry 3 though that obviously isn't from PS+. Yeah, the story got pretty dumb mid-way through but it's a blast. I only regret not turning the difficulty up as it's fairly easy.
Keep in mind he eats unadulterated pretentious bullshit for breakfast. He loves the stuff!

Also, are you on medium on Far Cry 3? I'm on medium and seem to die fairly regularly. But I do kinda suck at FPS games.

And yeah, the story turn at the mid point kinda makes me want to throw up.

No, you're right. I love artsy and pretentious shit. No shame. But Proteus is even beyond me. I want to contact the developers and ask "WTF?"

I don't know what difficulty I'm on, actually. I'm assuming default...the one where it asks if you've played FPSs before. I think I messed up by over-leveling before tackling the story missions. I cleared out all the radio towers and posts so I have all the weapons and most of the perks.

And the story...smh. It's silly. The writer claims he made it that way deliberately as some sort of commentary on video games. Not buying it. But like I said, I'm having enough fun with shooting shit that I'll let it pass.

I need someone to convince me that I need the Persona games for $5 each. I played through P4G twice, back-to-back and I'm not sure if I should get P, P2 and P3P...
Well for Persona 2 and 3 you need to buy the PS1 version of P2 and the FES version of P3 on the PS2 in order to get the whole story. I'm still holding out hope that they both get another rerelease some time in the future. P1 is good though, in that 90s kind of way.

Oh come on, at least I gave Pretentious Game (actual title) a negative review, that has to count for something.

You have no idea what pretentious means if you think Proteus is pretentious
At least half the internet uses it without knowing what it means.

I'm sorry, is there an objective way to apply the word? Enlighten me if so. The game (and I'm being generous by calling it that) is shallow to me. More power to anyone able to glean some meaning out of aimlessly wandering around an island constructed from MS Paint assets.

Yes, if the game went out of its way to act like it was something more than it was, like if it were saying that it's some form of art because of its inherent simplistic qualities.

Thing is, none of that is true. Neither is that true for Journey, another game many call pretentious. Phil Fish is pretentious. Proteus? Not even close.

I just got to the 2nd part of the game so I just finished unlocking all the radio towers before I went to bed last night. Maybe things will be a tad easier for me now that I have all the weapons. I've only done a few of the outposts though. Yeah the story is bad but the gameplay is pretty fun, except for a couple of sections I found obnoxious near the middle portion. But I'm past that so hopefully the game picks up for me again. I am about ready to be done with it, though I'll probably end up going for the platinum since it seems so easy.

Can't spell pretentious without p-r-o-t-e-u-s.

I really don't get Proteus. I wandered around in a 2600 game, occasionally stumbling across primitively drawn leprechauns who hop away from you. Come back here with my Lucky Charms, you little bastards!

Wait, lol. So you're the authority on what the word means? I love Journey. While others may think it's artsy fartsy I don't believe anyone could accuse it of being inaccessible. Therein lies the difference. And I certainly don't think Phil Fish is pretentious. Sensitive and unhinged, maybe. See how opinions work? Good, good...!

I wish I could say what the "game" was attempting to do. What I do assume is that developers intend for their games to be fun. But since, you know, it defies several modern conventions with no explanation I'm only left guessing how I'm supposed to have any. Not only am I tasked with figuring out what the fuck to do but I have to stare at rudimentary/shit graphics? Pretentious.

After about 30 minutes with it I gave up. I don't mean to discourage others from trying it. Good luck.

Um, I'm not saying I'm an authority on what the word means, just that I know how to use it and you clearly don't.

Tell me how Proteus acts like it's something more than it is, then you'll have a point. Until then, boring, rudimentary, overly simplistic, or not fun suit what you're saying better. It's not pretentious.

Excerpts from @Squirrel's review:

Like a piece of abstract art there will be those that fall in love with it, and an equal or greater amount that shrug it off as pretentious and insubstantial.
Proteus is almost certain to draw a strong emotional response, from infatuation to downright anger.
If I was to level a complaint at Proteus, it's that in the end it wound up feeling like something that belonged in a gallery, not in my steam library.
I want others to experience what I did, but also expect most would feel cheated to have paid what it currently costs or even anything at all.

Thus is the case with most things that aspire to be considered art, which for better and for worse, is the only way to describe Proteus, a love it or hate it affair if ever I saw one.
All the above coming from someone who actually enjoyed it.

Whaaat

So you can say Phil Fish is trying to be more than what he is but I can't say the same of a video game? Is this happening? How in the hell can either of us know with any certainty? It's a freaking opinion.

I'm sure no developer believes their game is "trying too hard" but I've already explained why I think it is. You don't have to agree. And, really, no hard feelings. The snark is unneccesaary. I know what the word means. I want to believe that you do.

there will be games that test the boundaries of games.    some will be ultraviolent, some will be artsy, some will be porn.

not all of them will be for every gamer.

the world still goes round.

[and i've never heard anything about proteus other than it's a simple game about exploration without set goals.  it's not claiming to reinvent gaming, it's meant to just be a peaceful exploration.   heck, some people like talking to every npc in jrpgs and exploring every house, i find it a nuisance. ]

This thread is so damn pretentious.

Just like Final Fantasy VII and the people who love it.

I do that in JRPGs and I wish I didn't because it's usually useless and adds way more time but I "need" to read every bit of dialogue. I wish developers just gave them no dialogue unless it was necessary to a quest.

I do it too, and run around either clicking x at every desk and sink or checking for context prompts. worse, some games have multiple dialog threads so you need to keep clicking, and then some people just repeat themselves.

all because it might drop a health pack or something.

which is double OCD because I never use health packs in games (hoard inventory).

total nuisance. at least i'm only OCD about games and not everyday life.

Yeah, I'm the same exact way. It's bad cause I know it's dumb but missing out on potential dialogue is too much for me.

someone stop me from buying chrono cross. my mint disc 1 got stuck in my broken 60gb, don't know if it's the morherboard power supply or the br drive. should I get this digitally or just hunt down a black label disc 1 on fleabay?

Having the time and memory space to play is not important here. What is important is that you are continuing to hoard games!

Transfer already downloaded games to the PS3.

As long as you didn't get rid of your PS3, you can get the disc out by opening it up. There are a ton of screws but other than the annoying disc drive cable, it's a piece of cake. There are a bunch of videos on how to do it. Just an example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JH-V8EgaEr8

persona is a great rpg series, a must play for all !

off topic but i need a boosting partner for blacklight reteibution,, i need the ”toasty” trophy. pm me if ya wanna help :D.

Yeah, why do we do that? I must've spoken to hundreds of NPCs over the years and none of them had anything interesting to say. I think I keep hoping that one will eventually break that trend. I mean, the chances are good that someone will say something interesting or amusing eventually, right, and not mundane like the previous hundred NPCs? I bet you hoard potions for the final battle too.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2014/08/07/surgeon-simulator-anniversary-edition-on-ps4-august-12th/

Surgeon Simulator Anniversary Edition will be out on PS4 next week. It includes all of the operations from the PC and iPad versions along with a new mode just for this version.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2014/08/07/inner-city-kids-coming-to-ps-vita-next-spring/

Inner City Kids is a turn-based strategy game starring kids out on the streets to save the city as the adults are kidnapped and replaced by robots. The weapon customization feature looks like a fun way to handle that stuff. It's out on Vita next spring.

Edit: After watching that trailer, most of those Youtubers were so ridiculous with the drooling, masks, showers, etc.

Kind of glad Surgeon Simulator isn't coming to PS3/Vita.  Basically a sandbox game in an operating room.  Probably never finish the game and just screw around like everyone else in the trailer.

My lockscreen is the same as in your pic. Then I use tge matching set across four slides as the background on my Vita. Found that almost two years ago when I bought it, haven't changed it since. :)

What? Sleeping Dogs Definitive is coming out? I liked it an all, especially since it was set in Hong Kong. But... I like Yakuza better.
A man who never eats pork bun is NEVER a whole man!

Sleeping Dog was enjoyable. I liked the story and the combat system was fun. The driving mechanics of the game were really bad and pointless. The game was sandbox but it was a rather empty world, it could have just been segmented areas like Yakuza and I think it would have worked better.

Yakuza has a ton of mini games and stuff to do beyond the main story, where as Sleeping Dogs was pretty lack luster.

I said all that? My past self sounds more eloquent than I remember him.

Or I'm a pretentious ass inflating my own ego.
Hahah, yeah as I was reading it I thought your colorful prose may have been inspired by the "game". Nah, but it's a good and fair review. I actually re-downloaded it since you say it's so short.

I love things that advance/expand the medium. I just think that if you're going to make something you know is unconventional, do it in a measured way. That's where I feel like the pretension comes in. I get they want to leave it open but there's a thin margin between that and just throwing some shit together. A hollow game operating on the pretense of "art". But like I said, I will give it one more try. Would you suggest using a guide? I really don't want to.

And this isn't directed at you, but I wish we could move past saying "every game isn't for everyone". Duh. I know most of us say it to disarm the crazies who take shit too seriously, but I'm tired of placating.

I wouldn't suggest a guide, but be on the lookout for shiny circles.

And yeah, I try not to use the phrase since it's a given, though Proteus really is the sort of game that's not going to appeal to everyone (or most), so I feel it's worth making an exception for. I thought it was interesting and mellow, but I can certainly understand all the criticisms people throw on it, and at times feel the same way.

isn't persona 3 usually $20?

And which FF do you guys recommend for the vita?

VII or VIII?

You ever played either? 7 is an overall favorite in the series. I personally liked 8 a lot and triple triad was addictive. Was a bit more Grindy but I enjoyed it a good bit.
