You ever played either? 7 is an overall favorite in the series. I personally liked 8 a lot and triple triad was addictive. Was a bit more Grindy but I enjoyed it a good bit.
Haven't really played any FF besides IV but I'm always hearing how VII is overrated but not much of VIII

VII isn't overrated, it's just the game that got people into the series. Therefore people who played them before get pissed when someone says they played VII despite not playing the others when the numbering for them is all screwed up here so unless you know FF you don't know which one you're really playing pre-FFVII.

That said, VII still holds up well and has a great story, great characters, and GREAT music. The materia system is also really cool. I say go with that one. I personally loved VIII, but on a fresh take I think VII is just a good experience everyone interested should take.

I think VII had a solid story, bland characters, and really good music. I did like the materia system. The graphics were ugly at the time and are downright bad now. I'd be more inclined to replay IX out of all of the PS1 era Final Fantasy games (not including Tactics, which would win hands down), but I wouldn't discourage anyone from playing VII (or any of the games).

FF8 is very grindy. You will grind for magic drawing, the test system is poop and is how you get your money (I almost recommend cheating on the tests to get the max money...even then the game isn't a cakewalk), some of the characters are very flat after being introduced (Selphie, That cowboy guy, possibly Quistis), the card game Triple Triad is fun but hard esp for getting all the character/GF cards, Guardian Forces are a grind and they have long animations (which you can learn boost to do more damage) and the GF will take up a lot of battle time. Trust me when I say you want Diablos early and want the Steal command....it's a must!  Having the card maker/get items from cards ability on Quezacatol also helps a lot too. Diablos starts weak but by the end is easily one of the strongest....no elemental rocks!

Even with all these negatives I enjoyed the heck out of this game and I liked the story of Squall and Rinoa though i'm sure it's way more grindy now if I would play it (I own it on the PSN already). FF7-FF9 are all worth playing. To me FF9 is the easiest to just jump into and is just very classic and fun. Easily one of my PSX favorites followed by 7 and 8 for the PSX games.

And this isn't directed at you, but I wish we could move past saying "every game isn't for everyone". Duh. I know most of us say it to disarm the crazies who take shit too seriously, but I'm tired of placating.
Some people obviously need to be reminded of it.

I'd disagree that 8 is very grindy. If you spend a bit of time early in the game learning the card mod abilities and winning cards, you can get some mid-high tier spells way earlier than needed. That'll make combat a breeze if you understand the junction system.

Furthermore, the game actually punishes grinding. 8 is the only FF game where enemy level is based on party level. Level too much too early and you'll be stuck. Its more important to understand the relationship between drawing magic and equipping it to boost stats. This is why 8 tends to be a love/hate game. In general, if you're relying on summons in battle you should rereview your junctions.

Personally I enjoyed 8. Standard FF characters and crazy plot, but the card game and battle system are fun. Badically, if a complex level/battle system sounds fun get 8. Otherwise get 7.

Try playing Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete or Star Ocean: The Second Story. The bosses were level-dependent in the game and punished those who hacked their levels to max. Plus some battles were unwinnable, so it really punished those who were expected to die and took more time doing it cause they had buttloads of stats.

isnt that the same as grinding? you're just grinding card battles instead

Ive beat Star Ocean 2 quite a few times, what are you talking about it punished players who "hacked" to max levels? and unwinnable battles are scripted losses in games..

Speaking of Lunar, I gotta remember to pick that up the next time it goes on sale.

I REALLY need a 64 GB card.

This. You can use the forged medals to get to lvl 100 as early as three or four hours into the game and just steamroll your way to the end. Only the optional stuff and final boss are hard, the latter of which is only difficult if you take the limiter off by doing even more optional private actions.

I don't remember being able to get spells from cards. You can get items only I think. If I remember correctly you can get spells drawing from enemies, junction points and ummm that's it I think. It's a huge grind to draw the spells as junction points were limited and took time to recharge, and enemie's had a limited supply of the spells on them to draw so each time you draw it's diminishing returns.

I'm not 100% talking about fighting enemies in grinding. It was mainly drawing spells that lead to the grind and there was a grind in getting cards (Like me making a few bomb cards...these are great corner cards) though I liked the card game a lot. You also have to grind out ability points to learn GF abilities. Maybe I did it because I wanted steal and the card making one and it took a while to get these. Maybe I just remember it differently but there was a heck of a lot of grinding, such as making weapons. You had to get in many fights to steal/win the correct items. Also different levels of enemies carried different items so using Tonberry's abilities of level up and down were necessary. I don't even want to remember trying to get the most powerful magic in the game from the Island between Heaven and Hell I believe....also a place where you need to grind to get parts for the party character's ultimate weapons.

My memory may be incorrect but I put around 70-80 hours or so and I did pretty much everything. It was fun but a lot of stuff took a lot of work to get.

Edit: Sorry I was wrong but yes you could get magic spells from cards....I forgot about that.

It, like Lunar, had something in place where it adjusted the stats for bosses dependent on the party's average level. If you hacked your characters' levels to max (lv 99 or 999, depending on the game), then the game detects this and adjusts the stats for bosses accordingly. I experienced it first hand when I tried out Gamesharks and Action Replays. Final Fantasy 8 is also the same way.

Lunar and VIII did this, Star Ocean didn't.

This was easy if you had the "no random encounters" ability turned on. there were draw points all over those islands for the best spells in the game, and with encounters turned off you never ran into the superpowered enemies on those islands.

Haha true I forgot a lot about it....played maybe a year after it came out on PC! Now I have it on PSN. Still my least favorite of the PSX entries including FFT which is probably right below FF9 for me.

As long as you didn't get rid of your PS3, you can get the disc out by opening it up. There are a ton of screws but other than the annoying disc drive cable, it's a piece of cake. There are a bunch of videos on how to

ive heard nothing but bad stories about that br drive. I can break down the console apply thermal paste etc but I have a feeling taking the disc out will kick my ass

I wouldn't suggest a guide, but be on the lookout for shiny circles.

And yeah, I try not to use the phrase since it's a given, though Proteus really is the sort of game that's not going to appeal to everyone (or most), so I feel it's worth making an exception for. I thought it was interesting and mellow, but I can certainly understand all the criticisms people throw on it, and at times feel the same way.
Yeah, so I played some more. I'm throwing in the towel. Can't do it. At least not without a guide. I chased a frog up and down a hill for what seemed like an eternity. I did manage to find a ring of stars or something that transported me to another island but it was basically the same shit. Your review is even more baffling now as I cannot fathom what you see in this game. Even for the audio/visual experience it's just so lame to me hahaha. Can't believe @tyler lasted longer than me.

Disclaimer: I actually liked Dear Esther. And Myst is like one of the first PC games I ever owned. I think the difference is that those actually had a breathing (albeit deserted) world to discover.

So...picked up quite a few FF games off this sale for an eventual Vita purchase, despite owning most of them on disc still. Got some questions about some things that I've never needed to bother with before, though, because reasons:

1. Is it possible to copy the PS1 pseudo-memory cards from PSP to PS3/Vita? If so, how difficult is it? Would I need to copy to and from the PS3 to get it onto the Vita or can I do a simple copypasta from my computer?

2. How's Duodecim on the Vita? I've seen people commenting on just about all of the Final Fantasies except this and the first Dissidia.

If anybody knows where to find a good deal on a Vita that isn't scratched up (meaning not Cowboom), that'd be nice, too :p

Yeah, just transfer the saves to PS3 and then to the Vita and it'll work just fine.

It isn't that bad. The guy in the vid takes less than 7 min to open the drive. I've done it and what was in that vid is what I remember. You just need a long Philips head screwdriver to reach some of the super-recessed screws in the beginning, and a smaller one for the BR drive, and don't yank the console too much when encountering those cable ribbons.

Didn't think that was possible. Guard. Guard. Guard. Parry. Guard. Guard. Guard. Guard. Guard. Parry. Guard. Guard. Guard. Guard. Guard. Parry. Attack!

AC combat is terrible. It was super bad until IV, which moved the needle all the way from atrocious to subpar.

FWIW Persona 3 was a PS2 game, and one that came out pretty late in its lifetime, so its graphics are decent. The only version you can play on the Vita would be P3P (Persona 3: Portable), which was a port made specifically for the PSP, and PSP games look great on the Vita. I can't speak for how the older Personas look, so if you just typoed which Persona you wanted, nvm.

It's more that the controls are simpler so you don't have to hold down three buttons to attack or whatever.

Finally. I was wondering when they were going to announce more details on their "Military Appreciation" sale. I've only played it on Vita; do you know if there are free tables or demo tables on PS3 or PS4? On Android - and presumably iOS - there is a free table every month you can play without limits, and you can demo any table up to the first high score (the lowest score on the scoreboard). I didn't see that on Vita and I assume that's the case for PS3/4 too.

Is it also possible through computer copypasta or is that the only way that works?

i googled around and found this:

http://community.eu.playstation.com/t5/PS-Vita-General/PSP-PS1-saves-to-Vita/td-p/16900504

key quote:

"Never mind - I found a solution, which is to insert the Memory Card Pro Duo into my PC (thank god I have a slot for it there), copy the saves from that into the folder that Content Manager looks at on the PC, and then connect the Vita to the PC and use Content Manager on the Vita to copy the saves from the PC."

So... it's possible.

I know I transferred ps1/psp saves from psp to pc to vita, but I only ever tested that it worked for psp (disgaea) and it's been ages since i did it. wasn't hard, though.

Does anyone have an opinion on Front Mission 3? For $3, I might dive in.
If you liked Final Fantasy Tactics, you'll love it. It's essentially that but with robots and machine guns. There was ungodly frame drops when I played it on OG playstation so I'm not sure if they fixed those for the digital release.

people who hack deserve stuff like this anyways

Careful everyone, this is a gateway drug to more pinball.

Just a headsup. I just noticed Ghosts is having 2X EXP all weekend. I'll be on later (PS4) if anyone wants to hit me up. Probably the last I'll play it before Destiny drops.

Thanks Frisky, was looking forward to hearing more about this.

I don't own any of the Season 1 tables so this is good for me, I'll probably grab them on PS3/Vita since it's crossbuy. Will also grab the 4 starter pack tables on PS4 if they're going to be free. That's pretty sweet too.
