You guys are funny (and helpful).

I managed to get it to the safe mode menu (must have been doing it wrong before), and I chose rebuild database since it had already restored the file system like 10 times.

But it's been on "Preparing... please wait" for at least ten minutes.  What does this mean? :(

You REALLY need to get a new HDD for your PS3; when you get those kinds of errors, your old one is probably on the way out.

Seems like I'm going to have to reformat the HDD.  That sucks.  Why did this happen to me?  Just the HDD going bad (which would mean this will happen again), or have I been doing something wrong?

If it's just a bad HDD, I might as well just give up until I can buy a new one, or I'll just have to keep reformatting.

Okay, so it's probably just the HDD dying then. I will just get a new HDD instead of fussing with this. I wanted a new one anyway ironically, but I'm stretched so thin right now with the holidays.

Sorry for clogging up the thread! You guys probably wish it was more Final Fantasy babble now :)

You'll probably need to restore the system, not just the "file system".
*Ahem*

Anyway, sorry to hear that. As he said, it could be a faulty or dying HDD. But, it could have also been an improper shut down. Did the console overheat (not unlikely while downloading & installing that behemoth of a game)? I had to restore my HDD 2 years ago (thnx Resistance 3!!), and I'm still using the same one.

Interesting, so maybe my HDD is okay, just severely corrupted?  I really had been thinking of getting a new one anyway.  I just don't really want to get one right now.  :/

I'm not sure if it ever even attempted to download/install Ni no Kuni.  I've never had overheating problems before, or even so much as a lockup.  It's a 2009 PS3 phat, and to be embarrassingly honest, I have not played it a ton.  But I got PS+ a year or two ago (summer 2012?), so the HDD has seen a lot of action now with all the downloads/installs, then subsequent deletes (of things I haven't played yet) to make room for something else.

This is 100% Captainteks fault. I mentioned all the Final Fantasy chatter (calling those who do it nerds in the process) and then Captain mentioned that "It's Final Fantasy Time!" and mentioned he heard 13 is the best one, which incited all this. I'm taking no responsibility for this!
You should have known that even a passive mention of it would get captaintek or jay started. They can't help themselves. This thread has certain trigger words that should be avoided. Final fantasy, Demons souls, Polygon, Spelunky.. these are just a few of many.

You mentioned too many trigger words! :ziplip:

You won't really know if it's just a weird bug or a bad HDD until it does it again.
Fair enough! I will reformat the sucker, beat the crap out of it with Ni no Kuni et al, and see if it does it again. That will spare me from having to buy a new HDD for a little while at least.

Does anyone use that Seagate 7200 rpm hybrid drive in their PS3? Doesn't seem like 7200 rpm and a 64MB solid-state cache would really result in much better performance.

Yeah, the 64mb won't do you any good. Better to toss a standard traditional drive in there instead of wasting your money getting one with the cache in it.

Edit: Well, I turned it on, and it said the file system or storage device had become corrupted and would be restored. Oops. This has happened twice in the last few months. Maybe time for a new HDD, but I don't have the $$, and it seems a shame to upgrade the HDD near the end of the system's lifespan.
There was a PS2 game released this year, I believe. It'll be a good 2-3 years at least before a lot of the major titles are no longer releasing on PS3.

Regarding the drive issue...if the PS3 doesn't have any built-in diags, yank the drive and shove it into your computer to run the diagnostics there.

Yup I'm with my PS3 for the longhaul! Games are finally coming out for it that I'm interested in now. :) And I still have a ton of stuff on it I want to play since PS4 doesn't do the kind of backward compatibility that I want.

Anyone else playing kingdom of amalur free from ps+? I'm about to stop doing side quests. I never thought I'd say this about a game but this game has too much content. It's fucking huge. It's fable combined with Skyrim - a single player MMO.

I picked it up a few months back for 8.49 on PC for the complete version. I want to play it, but am dreading the inability to follow multiple quests. I hated that shit in Borderlands. So annoying to keep backtracking over the same area or switching active quests constantly to see which have the tasks in which area.

A friend of mine sent this to me today. http://www.dashhacks.com/ps3/ps3-news/urgent-psn-users-change-passwords-now-fraud-is-really-happening.html

Looks there *might* be a repeat of the last PSN hack happening again. I changed my password again and deleted my credit card info. Better safe than sorry.
http://community.us.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-Network-Support/Sony-wallet-credited-3-times-by-50-unauthorized-transactions/td-p/41870959

It doesn't look like a mass PSN attack. I'm guessing this is either related to the Google/Facebook hacking and use the same password on PSN. Or it could be someone finally using the old PSN hack data and having success with people who didn't change their password.

Either way, I'd remove your CC info from PSN if you want to reduce any risk. I had to change my PSN PW last week due to Sony resetting it and I'm guessing it was due to someone trying to brute force their way in w/o success.

The map shows you which quests are in the area. The active quest is a gold circle and non-active quests are white circles.

Played a couple hours or so of Terraria this morning with one of my kids. I wasn't sure at first, but once you get the hang of it it is definitely a lot of fun. Good buy for sure and I'll probably buy the Vita version once it's out. I really hope you can play PS3+Vita, including two players on PS3 and one on Vita. Even better would be if we could do that AND play with another person online on a Vita (one friend of theirs has a Vita). Also they have a cousin with a PS3 that maybe can convince to buy the game too. :) How many coop players at once allowed?

You could at least explain why.
VII is universally loved but there is a lot of nostalgia involved. VIII tried to have a more mature storyline but had a fairly weak protagonist. VI is awesome of you want to get a little more old school and Kefka is an awesome villain. IX is pretty sweet too. It tried to take some of the best things about past games and include them as much as possible. Sooooo...I would play FF Tactics.

Just like the PlayStation 3 version, Terraria on PS Vita will support up to eight simultaneous online players, along with competitive leaderboards and (extremely) challenging Trophies!

This is why I wish they'd just come out and give details about how everything will work. Cross-play is available, but since cross-buy isn't explicitly mentioned I'm guessing that confirms our suspicions. Okay, well, then how much is the vita version going to cost? And will it be discounted if I already own it for PS3? I'm not concerned with trophies, but I understand why some might see the added value of separate lists. Will that be the case? The discount leaves next week, correct? So I hope they would at least offer some clarification before then. Looks like a fun game that I'd rather play on vita, but I'll double dip if the conditions are right.

Okay, so I thought I was formatting my PS3 hard drive.  Instead, I ended up having to redo the system settings, create a user account, and it put me back to the XMB.  I signed in to the PSN.  None of my stuff is anywhere.  However, when I go to system info, it says the HDD is nearly full, so my stuff is still on there.

What gives?  Should I just format the hard drive, or is that unnecessary?  I have no idea what happened to "fix" whatever was broken, because previously it just kept telling me my file system needed restoring and would restore it, reboot, restore it in an endless loop and wouldn't let me rebuild the database.

Back everything up and format.

For anyone who has played the Ys games on multiple platforms what was your preference:  PC with KB/M, PC or PS3 with controller or handheld (PSP/Vita)?  I'm most interested in opinions on Oath.

I like playing with a controller, personally, with preference to playing them on PSP/Vita.

Huh? Why would that get you back to the same point? I thought it was corrupted?
Well, I did something, and it had me enter in my account info (not my PSN but just my account on the PS3), set everything up and stuff, and then I was back at the XMB, everything working fine. However, none of my stuff was on there at all. It's just an empty XMB, no games. But if I look at the system info, the hard drive is still full. I'm totally confused.

Did you create a new account? Did you deauthorize the console?

It asked me to create a new user account on the PS3, so I did that. Maybe it's because I didn't use the same name? I don't remember what name I used before.

And then I went in and activated the PS3, but I think it was already activated before that. Nothing shows up still, despite the HDD being full of stuff. I signed in to PSN, though, and if I go into the store, it shows all my purchases. It does not say any of them are downloaded or anything though (despite, again, the HDD having stuff on it).

Log into your old account. All you should need is your email and password.

Anyone else playing kingdom of amalur free from ps+? I'm about to stop doing side quests. I never thought I'd say this about a game but this game has too much content. It's fucking huge. It's fable combined with Skyrim - a single player MMO.
That's basically what they were going for and a large factor into the eventual collapse from the development end.

VII is universally loved but there is a lot of nostalgia involved.
VII was my first exposure to FF, I hated it put me off the entire series for a long time. Now get out of my damn universe.
