Sony delivered as promised. Check your emails guys.

There appears to be a mild correlation between enjoyment of trophy hunting and dislike for Journey/Tearaway/forms of visceral gaming...
smiley-confused013.gif
They are just "cute artsy" games with no gameplay or challenge. If I want something with little gameplay Id prefer Heavy Rain or Beyond Two Souls. But please this is just my opinion don't drag things out.

I want Papo & Yo but I'm afraid to pull the trigger if it will be part of a bigger flash sale and will be cheaper later for Plus members. I'd hate to pull early and get pissed on.

For me there was no challenge. I never felt like I was never overcoming any obstacles. With flower, which I enjoyed quite a bit, at least had a few parts that I had to play a few times. Journey deserves a lot of credit for the seamless online drop in, but that is a technical achievement and not something that would make me enjoy the actual game.

I get confused by claims of certain games having no gameplay when they certainly do, so what sort of mechanics should games like Journey have to fulfill this arbitrary requirement?

Well considering you can play Journey with what, an analog stick and one button? Makes it quite boring. And all you did was walk the whole game. No enemies to kill or nothing else. Just walking. And an occasional jump.

I did have someone on my PSN friends list remove me after he asked if I cried on Journey and I said no, he acted like I was a jerk for not liking it. Thought that was funny.

Didn't mean to start a Journey shit storm, Journey has gameplay it's just not the focus of the game. I'm surprised some hated it. It's all good though not everyone will like everything I know I don't. I don't like 1st person games. It's all opinion.

Stellar wasn't being literal by saying there's "no gameplay".  If you push buttons and something happens on the screen, obviously there is gameplay.  Otherwise it would just be a movie.  But yeah, the gameplay in Journey sucks.  You walk and jump and sometimes swim. Compare a game like Ocarina of Time to a game like Journey.  OoT is a great example of a game with good gameplay.  Compare what you do in OoT to what you do in Journey and you'll understand where our critique that the "gameplay is lacking" in Journey is from.

There are a few enemies, which eat your scarf (aka lifebar/health) up should you get caught by them. You don't kill them or anything like that. It's not a game about action, but this spiritual journey to see what's at the top of the mountain. You meet companions along the way that you can travel with and work together to get there or go at it alone. If you want action and conflict, Journey's definitely not the game for you. That doesn't mean there's no gameplay in it.

I'm sure it'll be on super turbo sale sooner or later. If you've held out this long I'm sure you can hold out longer. That said, it's another game that's more about the experience than the gameplay (although it has more "gameplay" than Journey from the sounds of it) so if you're in to that sort of thing you might want to jump on board and buy it anyways.

Really, Papo & Yo is 100% about the ending and knowing the back story of the creator of the game. In retrospect everything else kinda felt like filler to me. yomv.

There are a few enemies, which eat your scarf

Why is it that this sentence makes the game sound way more interesting to me?

It's really 4 buttons from what I remember o, x, hold o, hold x. I think. But I thought the interesting more fun part of the gameplay was not from walking but the whole float\fly mechanic. I thought it was interesting that you can power another player's ability to float by engaging them with the circle button and they can do it back. A lot of little things that add up as a whole. I also liked that it made me get something out of the game, made me learn the controls, made me decide where to go, etc. etc. It was interesting too that I thought I only ran into 1 player but it turned out it was 5 or 6. I don't know I just feel like if you look solely at 1 aspect of the game you aren't getting the entire experience.

I get that, but to say it needs enemies to kill or it has to be like Ocarina of Time is a confusing thing. It's obviously not going for that in any way shape or form, so why does it need that stuff? Just to offer some people something to do when they're not exactly thrilled with what's there? That just sounds like watering down the game just to satisfy the segment of the audience that isn't likely to be into what it's offering. It's fine if you want to offer critique whether you enjoy any of the games being discussed here or not, but do expect others to engage with you guys to go a little bit deeper into it.

I do have a pet peeve with the term "gameplay" because it's kind of meaningless and arbitrary at this point. That's why I use more detailed terms like controls, mechanics, or other terms to be more specific with what I'm referring.

Is it possible to buy playstation plus games you already downloaded? I would just buy Hotline Miami just to tie to console.
Not directly, but there are ways to free the games you've gotten for free from the tyranny of PlayStation Plus' expiration dates. Buying those games in a bundle, like Quantum Conundrum in the Tomb Raider bundle, will do that.

I also suspect that buying a code from Amazon or wherever else offers them could also do the trick, but I haven't tried it out myself to see for sure. I'd suggest keeping an eye out on the code on Amazon to see if they drop it to the PSN sale price if you want to see for sure.

What was the promotion exactly? I got in on the 3 months for $3. Was there a different one?
I assume it was emailed to those who weren't Music Unlimited subscribers. Would have done this if I could. I never got this promotion but I did the $12 for a year and $3 for 3 extra months.

Is lack of a challenge better? I never felt threatened or in any danger the entire game. I am not saying I need some action packed, buildings collapsing, earth shaking adventure, but give me something that makes my time worth it. I said before I liked flower because flower has parts that felt more challenging than anything in Journey.

I don't think challenge was it was going for either. There were threatening parts for me when you had to sneak around and stay out of the view of the watchers and the stuff at the end. There weren't really any challenging parts in Flower either. It had some levels with an oppressive, dark feeling to it that might have had things that could hurt you, but nothing with any real challenge.

@Frisky pretty much expressed my feelings on this. I'll only add to it that we can be challenged and stimulated in different ways. Journey doesn't force you to contort your hands in a million different positions to achieve the ultimate c-c-combo, but if you allow it can be a very provocative experience. Hell, just in challenging the notion of what cooperative play and collaboration can be. Well over a year later and I still think about it. But, let me shut up with all this new age bullshit. This recent proliferation of games refusing to implement use of the △ button is alarming, and I appreciate you guys pointing it out.

Also, wasn't criticizing anyone for disliking it. Just making an observation. At least within the confines of this thread, people who go the most cuckoo for le trophie tend to not like these sort of games. Interesting.

It had some levels with an oppressive, dark feeling to it that might have had things that could hurt you, but nothing with any real challenge.
Thanks for the discussion Frisky. Journey will always be one of those games that didn't do it for me and I will never understand the level of acclaim it received.

so the massive EU PSN sale is not happening for us americans?
I'd doubt it, but that is throughout the entire month of January. We'll probably get some similar sales during the month. For some reason the SCEE loves to announce shit ridiculously ahead of time. It's weird...

They are getting a sale on Brothers. Probably a good sign that we'll get a sale on it too. No mention of Mirror of Fate though. :whistle2:(

Yep. Luckily for everybody, there's enough quantity and variety of games on the PS Store that anybody should be able to find plenty of games that appeal to them. Unless they're captaintek.

Don't post very often, but wanted to express my appreciation for all the great information everyone provides in this thread. My two sons and I have a great library thanks to the people here. Hope everyone has an awesome Holiday season.  Feel free to add me as a friend on the PSN Network or Steam. You all rock.

Huh, why do you want to play Brothers? I think you'll find yourself..."unchallenged".
I enjoy checking out almost all highly reviewed games. I like lots of games that don't pose much of a challenge (From Dust, Heavy Rain, Beyond, Tearaway). I also don't research a ton about games before I get the chance to buy and play them. I know Brothers has a dual stick control design and is an adventure with some puzzles. Beyond that I won't research it too much more until it's actually on sale and I'm ready to buy it. It's very possible I don't like the game (it does give off an "adveture game" vibe, and I fuck ing despise those) but at least reviews say it has some light puzzles which is more than what games like Walking Dead have.

No blood or guns. Talk about pissing on us all with this lack of gameplay.
I had a full argument typed out but I deleted it because you basically play devil's advocate on this topic every time it's brought up. If you don't understand what we mean by "gameplay" despite many many people explaining it to you, you're either a moron or just being stubborn. I know you're not a moron so you're just being difficult about it.

Man....The escape plan DLCs need to go on sale. I missed em when they were a quarter, but I didn't have a vita back then. Even if they go half off, I'll get em, but for all 3 going for the same price as the full game? I'll wait.

I think only one of them was a quarter. I bought it back then because I knew I'd get a Vita eventually.

At least this stupid conversation that we've had ad nauseum since Journey came out has boosted the post count.  Maintaining our lead on the Steam thread for now!

Also, Journey sucks.
