SoTN is considered one of the greatest games of all time. If you haven't played that, I'd recommend that Castlevania bundle.

Pretty sure I have 100% on Dogma with Dark Arisen. Dragon's Crown I never beat the NG+ mode that unlocked after beating the original story mode, seemed to need a bit of extra grinding to get inches at a time. Was it fun grinding the end game?

As someone above suggested, pick up the Requiem bundle. The games are not only best in the franchise, but also representative of two very different genres, with Rondo of Blood being the pinnacle of the traditional 2D platformer and Symphony of the Night being the mother of "metroidvanias". In my opinion, both games have aged well.

If you end up liking Rondo of Blood, you'll want to eventually pick up the Anniversary Collection.

Going for the Anniversary Collection first is a bit riskier, not just because the games are older but because the mechanics can be a bit rough for those who aren't used to old school console difficulty. I personally love most of the games in the Anniversary Collection, but I also grew up with each of them.

Oh hey does anyone recommend black desert? I played the beta and it was terrible imo. It was the worst MMO I had seen in the beginning. Auto run to quest giver. Auto run to quest area. One or two enemy types peppered in a big circle area for you to smash on, auto run back to quest giver. Repeat. It literally felt like someone made a map on a map maker their first day trying it. Big open areas with huddled clusters of enemy spawns, nothing else in between.

Other people said the end game was where it got interesting, but I didn't want to waste time or money on figuring it out.

Anniversary collection isn't too bad difficulty wise due to the save states. Having the Japanese versions is also cool to see the differences. Kid Dracula was meh, but an amusing side venture.

Requiem is fantastic and has a lot of replay value as well. You really can't go wrong with either collection.

I haven't played the PS4 version of Black Desert Online, but I played it on PC at launch, and the stuff you're describing kinda reveals what kind of gamer you are. And I don't think BDO is for you. It's an innately grindey game. The payoffs are kind of abstract, old-school MMORPG things.

The last time I played BDO, it was much more of a grind than any other popular MMO out there. The rewards also weren't scaled and were completely random, so you might get an end-game reward at the beginning and vice versa. The visuals were great.

I tried FFXIV, Guild Wars 2, SWTOR, and Blade & Soul as well, and I'd rank BDO as second to last among them.

Dragon’s Dogma runs so much smoother on PS4 than on PS3 it’s not even funny. I wish they’d managed to keep the license for the Berserk items for it, but otherwise I’d say the PS4/XB1 version is definitive, even over the PC release (which has a much drabber palette for some reason). If you think you’d enjoy playing it again, this is definitely the way to do it.

Dragon’s Crown Pro... I feel like there’s definitely less of a difference. Unless you don’t have your PS3 anymore AND you think it’s something you’re likely to want to play again, I’d probably say skip it.

Castlevania is a hard call. Castlevania IV, Bloodlines, and Rondo of Blood are probably the best classic Castlevania games, with SOTN serving as the first Metroidvania style game in the series. SOTN, while quite good, is very different from the rest (and I’d argue probably not quite as excellent), and served as a template for the later 2D entries, so if you want to get a sample of both styles of Castlevania, I’d say the ROB/SOTN combo is your best bet; but it’s a hard sell at the same price as the other collection, which has two similar quality games, plus a bunch of other good ones. Maybe toss a coin?

For the record, if you have a Vita/PSP, The Dracula X Chronicles is a remake of Rondo of Blood that features the original ROB, a remastered variant of the PS1 SOTN (later versions of SOTN may be based on this? Not sure), and even the silly minigame Akumajo Dracula Peke as unlockables.

I don’t know anything about EDF.

One thing to note about Requiem is that it does not have save states if that matters to you. Not really a big deal for SOTN but it might matter more for Rondo since it's an old school game, die enough and back to the start of a level. That said it has an odd quick save system you can exploit if need be. If you quick save before you die when you reload the game you'll be at whatever the last check point you found was. Seems very unintended but it's there if you need it. Oh also, if you choose to play as Maria the game is incredibly easy anyway.

I also say go for Requiem and if you find that you enjoy Rondo of Blood pick up the other collection, lot of games for a very cheap price there. I played Rondo for the first time ever a few months ago and it totally blew me away honestly. I totally get why it has so much praise online.

Edit for Souffrir's post: The versions of the games in Requiem are the versions found on the PSP game (minus the 2.5D remake), seen a lot of talk where people think it's done with the PS4s internal PSP emulator. That means for SOTN it's a version with a playable Maria (but not some of the other changes the Saturn version had) and completely re-translated with updated voice acting. SOTN, while quite good, is very different from the rest (and I’d argue probably not quite as excellent), and served as a template for the later 2D entries, so if you want to get a sample of both styles of Castlevania, I’d say the ROB/SOTN combo is your best bet; but it’s a hard sell at the same price as the other collection, which has two similar quality games, plus a bunch of other good ones.

Not trying to get into a big argument here, but quite honestly, SotN just isn’t as tightly designed as the best of the classic Castlevania games. It’s really hard to call between Rondo of Blood and Super Castlevania 4, but I’d definitely put both of those, and quite possibly even Bloodlines, above SotN—not that SotN isn’t good, because it is, it’s just the gameplay and level design of those others are more focused, and I’d say they’re a better experience overall. I mean, obviously if you’re more into traditional Metroid over traditional Castlevania, or maybe even if you like RPG elements over traditional Castlevania, you might enjoy SotN better. That said, speaking as someone who could never get into traditional Castlevania games and whose bread and butter in the 5th generation were JRPGs, I kind of assumed SotN would be the game that got me into the series, but it didn’t; I couldn’t get into it at all the first time I tried it. Rondo of Blood was what did it for me years later.

All four of them are good games, though, and they’re all kind of difficult to get into for a newcomer to the series. The main takeaway here isn’t about which single one is best, it’s which collection will give you the most representative sample of the two 2D Castlevania styles (obviously Requiem), and which will give you the most bang for your buck (obviously Anniversary).

To go from "delayed indefinitely" to "delayed 1 month" is likely a reaction to the leaks. I doubt Sony/Naughty Dog suddenly figured out how to deal with the COVID-19 situation.

Eh, that's a stretch. It is more likely due to them getting a better grip on remote development. Naughty Dog is legendary for their crunch, and they have now seen their last month of development basically get changed - at the very end - to remote only development. A month tacked on the schedule sounds about right.

Crunching development in a remote environment is a much more pleasant experience than in office crunch. You still get to eat dinner with and see your family, and your start and end times are a great deal easier to modify because they do not involve transit. In person communication obviously suffers, but Teams can fix that. I'd say they left it open ended initially because they weren't sure how quickly they could transition. And also because obviously Ghosts of Tushima would be affected since it was coming hot on the heels (and likewise got a month push at the same time).

Personally I would think these development companies could avoid much of the furor they get from crunch periods if they did more with remote development. When I have to work late on code I mind infinitely less now that I am work from home (and have been for a few years, not just a covid thing). I also tend to get started earlier and don't watch the clock at the end of day worried about getting caught in traffic if I leave at the wrong time. And I never miss family dinner or tucking my sons in at night.

I just plat'd it a couple weeks ago and can't say I was the biggest fan. The presentation was great (graphics, story, etc.) but the gameplay was just not my type. Too much stealth, which I guess is understandable since it's primarily a stealth game, but I guess I just don't like stealth games then. The online was even more unbearable. I'm glad I'm done with it. I'll likely get the second part just because I want to see more of the story, but I dread actually playing it if it's the same way as the first game.

Nope. I struggled to get through it... basically was forced to finish it by a friend. It’s not for everyone... but the story is really good overall. I didn’t find the gameplay all that fun.

Sure, "they're all quite good" but you started this by proclaiming that the most revered entry in the series is by your standards not up to par with the likes of Rondo of Blood or Super Castlevania IV. As far as the spoilers go, I'm not sure if I've ever seen something leak so completely so early. But most games I've been waiting for over the last few years have all leaked at least a week or two early and I end up playing spoiler dodger.
