Honestly, Sony is right here - although it is usually their fanboys that review bomb games the most. The user reviews are worthless, there is no reason to allow users to review a game that hasn't been even released yet and given them a reasonable period to form an opinion. They have no way of confirming the user actually played it. Pretty much everything prior to 36 hours are garbage reviews anyways, either fanboys giving it 10/10 or trolls giving it 0/10 - usually based on which console it came out on or some feature that didn't happen, not on actual gameplay.

 
I can also say that I am absolutely loving Ghost of Tsushima. My game of the year will still be Final Fantasy Remake, but this may be number 2 easily.

People do get games a few days to weeks in rarer occasions ahead of street date. But I agree that it should be required to prove you have a copy or proof of purchase through a website like Amazon and GameStop at least have.

Personally I like metacritic since it piles a bunch of places reviews into one spot giving a large variety of them to read through. I usually pick a couple high ones and low ones myself.

Maybe Metacritic doesn't want their site to be used to spread hate and all of the shit that comes with that. Cutting user reviews would be a better way to do that, but 36 hours is a start.

Sometimes corporations need awful things to happen on their platforms to realize they need to wake up and stop turning a bling eye to those issues because they're bigger than they thought. I don't think the site's been used that much as a part of a massive harassment campaign to attack developers and cast of a game before, so this is a breaking point.

 
I’m not saying Metacritic’s user reviews are worth a damn, or that review bombing isn’t potentially problematic, but I can’t believe how many people here are acting like an impartial review site being pressured into putting ANY sort of review embargo up is a good thing. This is a dangerous precedent.
 
I do think it's a good idea, because that early in a lot of people (especially those who feel strongly enough to give reviews) are potentially blinded by their own bias one way or the other; either giving wild praise because it's something they've been waiting for, or trashing it because it didn't immediately meet their preconceived expectations. 36 hours after release is not an unreasonable amount of time to mull it over.

But reviewing bombing on Metacritic has been going on for years. Obviously they put this embargo on because Sony got involved. Metacritic doesn't care what people do on other platforms, so the campaign you speak of has nothing to do with them. Sony didn't like that their game got canned on MC, so they decided to take action. MC should have done this a long time ago, maybe even implementing some sort of verification that you have played the game (like linking your PSN/XBL accounts and show that you have played the game you are reviewing).

Twitter harassment by crazies is nothing new, and has 0 to do with Metacritic (outside of using it for screenshots maybe?). User reviews were never used for bonuses or anything either, so it's clearly only about how it affected sales of the game.
I get that review bombs are annoying and a lot of the reviews can be dumb/worthless, but don't act like this was done for anything other than financial interest.

Everyone knows Metacritic (game) user reviews are worthless, eliminating that entirely would just seem like trimming the fat. Enforcing a waiting period though? That opens up the possibility of similar embargoes on other sites that are more reliant on user reviews, like Amazon; or even enforcing a wait period for professional reviews if a sufficiently large publisher feels like flexing its muscles. It's a bad move, in a very consumer-unfriendly direction.

I dont care about Metacritic and I dont buy a lot from Amazon but dont they have something that confirms if the reviewer purchased the product through them? I'm thinking they do. so at least some of their reviews are confirming ownership/purchase/use of the product being reviewed. I purchase something from Amazon and it comes with a card that says if I give the seller a great review, I'll get $10 Amazon credit. Thats bribery. How reliable is an Amazon review? I just assume everything is a lie anymore, cant rely on reviews for anything. It's everywhere.

Specifically with Amazon, companies pay people to buy their products and write a 4 star plus review, so for like a $20 product, they'll give you like $70 to cover the cost of goods and $50 to pay off the user for a review, it's scummy as hell, and its why Amazon is near worthless for reviews

Skater XL is finally releasing next week, and then cut MP from launch, with the plan to update it later.

I'd be fine with a cheaper upgrade, just don't think that owners of the games currently should have to pay full price.

 
So was the delay even necessary for GoT? It's not like it had a TLoU2 level controversy pushing people go down vote the game like it was going to change anything.

I think doing nothing sets a worse precedent.. People were reviewing the game without playing it, on top of sending out death threats to people working on the game.. Someone even threatened Laura Bailey that they would kill her child.. The hate over this game isn't normal criticism and should be discouraged. I stopped watching a twitch streamer that I was viewing regularly because their audience was giving them so much grief and hatred over even playing the game and I didn't want to be a part of that community after that..

I always take reviews with a grain of salt anyway. Because they are reviewing it as a full fat $60 game with no DLC or patches. When I eventually buy the game, it has been out for a year or two, is usually $20 or less, and it has tons of DLC and patches that fix it's worst issues. So, if a game gets a 5 or a 6, by the time that I play it, it's probably more of a 7 or an 8.

Were Metacritic user reviews involved in any of this? If so, curation and banning would have been the better option. If they couldn't have been bothered with that, then as I mentioned, simply doing away with user reviews for games entirely wouldn't have set as potentially dangerous a precedent.

People need to chill about TLOU2. Have you ever watched Aliens III? Highlander 2? Terminator Dark Fate?

Some writers are just too stupid or arrogant to realize how important their beloved lead characters are. 

Bad sequels happen. If the sequel stinks just don't play.

This. Plus I play at a pretty slow pace. Reviewers are often rushing through games and cramming them into a full schedule. I feel like if many reviewers approached games a more casual pace (or whatever pace they might naturally play) they would enjoy and appreciate it more.

How can you know if a sequel stinks if you don't watch/play it?

More importantly, why are you against people experiencing art and expressing their feelings on it?

Considering most review sites don't finish a game they review and some don't play them period I don't think they could be any less casual than they already are. Given that less than 50% of people even finish games they play going by trophy data I don't think a review matters much on that front other than getting people to maybe purchase a title.

I don't doubt that some reviewers only play a certain portion of the game and maybe don't play it at all. The only thing I reference is listening to podcasts and other similar media where reviewers talk about how they were rushing to finish this game or how they got it late and had to stay up all night to play it, etc. It's almost always presented in a negative context and I don't believe people can truly be unbiased about their circumstances for playing it (not to mention anything else), even if they consider themselves a professional and even if they think they can.

 
Great news for fighting game fans: Fantasy Strike has gone F2P with the complete character roster unlocked. The game is crossplay with Switch and Steam too. Optional DLC that doesn't affect gameplay is available if you want to support the game.

I see Mortal Kombat 11 Aftermath has sales going on other platforms, I'm thinking it will on the sale tomorrow. I'm waiting for the price to drop on the bundle with Kombat pack 1 since I haven't updated beyond the OG version.

Yet, the Xbox deals thread goes all over the place from people talking about their health to chatter about the industry and it is one of the best threads on the site. If you just want deals maybe you should focus on sites like PSPrices and leave the forum to the people who want a conversation.
