idk why u guys are feeling like you shouldnt wait

buying a launch model for full price seems like the less CAG thing to do
i was talking about inevitable ps5 revision/ price drop

u know, playstation thread
I'll wait as well to pick up the PS5, but not 3 years when the PS5 Pro finally comes out. I just don't want to be a beta tester by getting the PS5 and the XSX on Day-1, so I'll wait 3-6 months (hopefully closer to the 3-month period) to see if there are any major hardware issues with the two systems. I'm a bit worried about the exotic cooling system (liquid metal and cooling rods through both sides of the die, etc.) of the PS5, and would love to see what the experts will say after a proper tear-down after launch.

And to see if people are saying if their systems sound like a jet engine (launch PS4). That's why I wait for a Slim model Playstation to come out before buying one. I have enough of a backlog thanks to CAG, to tide me over for at least 2 years, but that is me personally. To each is their own.

It's totally speculation that we will even see mid-lifespan upgrades for the PS5 and the Xbox Series S/X, as they have built in expansion ports for things like extra storage space. And, Microsoft has said that sometime in the future, possibly as soon as 2021, Xbox Series X will get an update to run 8K content and games through a software update. I imagine that Sony will do the same thing. Sony has even gone on record saying that this console cycle will only last 5 years for them. Meaning that if a PS6 exists, it will be out in 2025 or 2026. And, Microsoft will probably retaliate with their new console. Nintendo and PC will continue to do their own things. The days of the 7 to 11 year long console cycle are over. If you wait a few years to buy one, the next one will already be ready to come out. And, there's no guarantees that companies will keep doing backwards compatibility out of the goodness of their own hearts. The only reason why we have it this generation is because the Series X and PS5 have such similar architecture compared to their previous consoles.
A 5 year console lifespan would guarantee I'm always a generation behind. That's just greedy. I'm one who feels we always go next gen right when the current gen hits it's stride. A 5 year timeframe would virtually guarantee we never saw the best a console had to offer.

i wasnt judging. im a cheapassgamer not a poor ass gamer, i was considering buying a ps5 at launch out of curiosity alone

but i saw some people in this thread lamenting that theyre gonna be careful and wait, i was trying to show that this is CAG.com, not reddit. on here its normal to find a sweet spot between how much you want something and how much you wanna pay

also

With that kind of logic people should never buy anything at all.
even though this is hyperbole, there actually can be a cutoff point where it is the perfect time to buy products sometimes. you could get a brand new ps3 for 150 bucks in 2014(?), that was the best moment to get it unless you needed it sooner

i’m undecided myself,

i have gamestop credit previously saved for the ps5 to get it at launch (so a funny money purchase not cash out of pocket)

i am still waiting for confirmation of a launch title “must have” or confirmation that current psvr has a significant upgrade to graphical fidelity/clarity

3rd party cross gen, i’m inclined to pickup later (and discounted cheaper) for ps5 at some point

miles morales isn’t enough since it’s more like spiderman 1.5 not a true sequel (think infamous lost light or uncharted lost legacy...bitu good but neither are full price must have games imo)

if i didn’t have the gamestop credit, then it would be a much easier decision.

If it includes the original game + DLC enhanced for the PS5, that might be enough of a launch title for me to bite. Would be nice if there was solid info on launch titles for both systems.

I have a feeling all of the good game news that will drive people to buy the PS5 will be coming out on wednesday. Demon's Souls remake will be a launch title if it's at all feasible, and I wouldn't be surprised if the Last of Us PT2's multiplayer was free to play on PS5. Are any PS4 games going to get free upgrades with extra features? Days Gone would be a great candidate.

There is so much we don't know.

miles morales isn’t enough since it’s more like spiderman 1.5 not a true sequel (think infamous lost light or uncharted lost legacy...bitu good but neither are full price must have games imo)

if i didn’t have the gamestop credit, then it would be a much easier decision.
Same here, even with the Gamestop credit. I'm not even sure I can get in on the first wave since I won't want to risk my gift card balance on the Gamestop website during that first wave of purchases and have to go through the trouble of getting it back via CS. I'll want to wait until one is in stock in store maybe. And with no real day 1 must haves, it just comes down to my base want to have the latest and greatest now.

The one thing I hope for the most is a PSVR 2 that is wireless and 100% backwards comfortable. I love mine, but haven't touched it in months because of the hassle. Give me a headset I can just put on and there is already a great catalog of games.

And now for a question. Let's assume that the DRM/account/activation situation is identical to PS4's.

My wife is buying a PS5 for the first time. If I activate my account on her PS5 and then play on mine without activating, will we be able to share my games? Could we both play them at the same time? Multiplayer? With each other?

Don’t forget that Ghost of Tsushima will be getting the multiplayer update around launch as well.
Yeah I suspect Tsushima will be getting some sort of PS5 support/upgrade since the multiplayer is coming out around the same time, if not after the console is out. Don't think there was a release date other then fall.

i wasnt judging. im a cheapassgamer not a poor ass gamer, i was considering buying a ps5 at launch out of curiosity alone

but i saw some people in this thread lamenting that theyre gonna be careful and wait, i was trying to show that this is CAG.com, not reddit. on here its normal to find a sweet spot between how much you want something and how much you wanna pay

also

even though this is hyperbole, there actually can be a cutoff point where it is the perfect time to buy products sometimes. you could get a brand new ps3 for 150 bucks in 2014(?), that was the best moment to get it unless you needed it sooner
That much is true but given that launch sony systems and most launch systems in general are almost always improved upon quickly there's not much reason to purchase even at a small discount.

A 5 year console lifespan would guarantee I'm always a generation behind. That's just greedy. I'm one who feels we always go next gen right when the current gen hits it's stride. A 5 year timeframe would virtually guarantee we never saw the best a console had to offer.
Nintendo is worse. They have a 4 to 5 year maximum home console cycle. Nintendo's first home console to break this cycle is the Switch, Nintendo says that they plan to support the Switch for 6 to 7 years.

Literally not even close to true. The NES, SNES and Wii all had 6+ year lifespans with the Wii in particular getting support well into the Wii U’s life. The Switch is selling amazing and likely won’t have a true successor to 2024 minimum.

The NES came out in 1985, the SNES in 1990, the N64 in 1996, GameCube in 2001, Wii in 2006, Wii U in 2012, Switch in 2017. So about a 5 to 6 year console cycle for each. The more popular ones lasting 6 years, the less popular ones lasting 5. The Switch is the first one rumored to be going for 7. It doesn't matter if third party games are still coming out for them. If we were going by that logic the SEGA Genesis would have a 30+ year console cycle. I am going by first party support of their consoles. We will at least hear about a Switch Successor, if not have one to buy in 2022 or 2023.

I remember when the ps4 first launched, I decided not to get one for at least 2 years. Then I saw a post on slick deals about an amazon listing for "not for sale" ps4s only months after it launched. They were super cheap (250.00 I think). My guess was that they were returns. It was a no brainier. I bought one and it was in mint condition. It didn't even go through the setup. It still works too.

I'll hold out hoping for a "not for sale" ps5 console!

I'm more of an Armored Core fan, and hope that they bring it back. But, Sekiro is probably the best of the best when it comes to their other games.

I will be unable to purchase a launch PS5, so hopefully Sony releases enough of the disc drive version of PS5, because I refuse to purchase an all digital console. Especially considering all the PS4 games I own on disc, that I would not be able to play with a disc less PS5.

Assuming there will be any returns this go around. One can only hope some of them ship through ups and don't end up too damaged.

Caution to anyone waiting for a console price drop. Depending on supply/demand they could be scalped for a couple hundred extra for upwards of a year.

I feel like this has become the norm, unfortunately. Microsoft claims that it has 6 million Series X consoles ready for launch, they didn't specify how many Series S consoles will be available, but I assume that the demand will be much higher for those during a global pandemic where everybody is poor. Hopefully Sony will have a bunch, but I also imagine that Covid 19 screwed up production at the Chinese factories where the PS5 is being made. So, who knows. I'm honestly pretty happy with both my PS4 Pro, and my Xbox One X for now. But, I have saved up almost $500 in heavily discounted Microsoft gift cards, so I am very tempted to preorder a Series X. I guess my getting a PS5 will depend on how much the disc version costs, because like a lot of people, I have a bunch of PS4 games on disc, and I would still like to be able to play them on my PS5.

Honestly, I'm hoping for an announcement on Timesplitters Wednesday (coincidentally playing on my birthday).

The first game came out 20 years ago with the launch of the PS2 so it would be a pleasant surprise to hear an announcement on a new title or a trilogy collection in the series.

Of course you also gotta factor in the economy as well. With a large number of people unemployed and brick retail places closing that may throw a wrench in purchases except for online. Price will also be a major factor. The lower they price it the more it will sell. It definitely seems like it might be limited stock but we've got months to go till release so anything could happen between now and then.

I always enjoy the discussion about console generations, especially how they compare in terms of performance, services, etc. I want to thank those of you in this thread who've contributed to the discussion, as it's given me a good idea of where things stand.

I'm actually planning to buy a PS4 in the next 3-6 months to replace the PS4 slim I sold last year, when my financial situation was dire. It's stable again, and I've been gradually saving up to replace it. My main question would be: whether to get another PS4 slim or a PS4 Pro? The current pricing is 299.99 for the slim and 399.99 for the Pro, so I would hope to see them lower the MSRP (or have some good holiday sales prices) after the PS5 releases.

I had no problems with my slim, and with a "dumb" HD (non-4K) TV I don't really think I need to get a Pro. The other reason I hesitate on the Pro is the concern about the noise. It seems as if a lot of people here have had problems with that--is it mainly a problem with certain games, or certain iterations of the Pro?

I've been fairly consistent when upgrading to next-gen; I usually get it 3 or more years into the lifespan...that's when the price has come down, the library has grown, new releases stop coming out for last-gen, and (sometimes) technical improvements have been made. So my current console setup includes: PS2 slim (bought 2005), Xbox 360 (Oct. 2009), PS3 slim (Jul. 2012), Xbox One S (Dec. 2017).

I had the PS4 slim from May 2016 - Jun. 2019. Though I sold the several PS4 discs I have, I still have a large digital library and it'd be great to get back to it.

While it'd be tempting to get the PS5 right away, I think I'd rather get a PS4 that I can count on for at least 3 years. Any advice about where to get one or when, or whether I should consider a Pro? I don't anticipate getting a 4K TV for at least 2 years, if that helps.

TL;DR: I'd appreciate your advice/experiences re: PS4 slim vs. PS4 Pro. Thanks!  :grouphug:

Wait until after Christmas... once that Ps5 hits, everyone will be pushing to get rid of their ps4. Perfect opportunity to grab one on the cheap.

Although unemployment is high, the housing market and related industries are exploding because so many people are spending time in their own homes and looking to better that experience in lieu of the social activities they were doing and now can't. The same logic may apply to video game sales, unused time and money will find a way to get used and video games are a pretty safe bet right now.

The answer you didn't want but what you should do if you can afford it: just buy a PS5 now. It'll last another seven years and retain value pretty well. There may not be an MSRP drop on this gen of consoles. Look at the Switch. And if there is? It won't be enough to cover the PS4 expenditure you make while waiting.

I agree. The PS5 is supposed to eventually have full backwards compatibility with PS4, the games will run even better than they do on the PS4 Pro, and the PS5 will even support the PSVR, if that is something that you are into. There is very little reason to get a PS4 this late into the Console's life.

I hope they release a back button addon for the PS5 controller (wish they would’ve just made rear buttons standard).  I love the DS4 attachment as I hate clicking the sticks in for L3/R3.

This is a very unpopular opinion among Soulsborne fans, but I'd say Sekiro. It is the best of them all IMO.
Is this an unpopular opinion? I very much agree!

If you want to play a Dark Souls game proper, 3 is definitely the one that plays the most like Bloodborne (though still pretty different).

NES was 7 years actually, 1983-1990. That's by Japanese dates, American would be 1985-1991.

For the PS4 slim and PS4 proper just know that some games have hiccups especially newer games. Ghosts of Tsushima on my launch PS4 has bouts of lag now and then such as 1 vs 1 duels (usually not enough to cause major issues). I'd say go for broke and get the PS5 as well when it comes out if it truly plays the PS4 games at their best.

Anyone know if Spelunky 2 will transfer over to the PS5? Tempted to purchase it this week, but would only buy for PS4 if it will transfer.

Developers make that choice themselves and it hasn't been said. I'd say it will come to the PS5 someday, but who knows if that upgrade will be free.

I read the post as referring to backwards compatibility, but maybe they meant an actual PS5 version. My understanding is that almost any PS4 game should be BC with PS5 but that not all have been tested. The marketing and information on this has been a little hazy, though.

I found this in an article on Polygon

According to a report from Eurogamer, Sony has already informed developers that any PS4 game submitted after July 13 will also have to be compatible with the PS5.

Yep, just meant ability to play, not necessarily a native version. Hoping Wednesday’s press conference sheds light on compatibility and digital libraries. Just don’t want to jump the gun because I plan to sell my Pro once I’ve locked in a preorder (assuming launch lineup has enough appeal ... Demon’s Souls + Spider-man would do it).

FYI - Assassins Creed Valhalla and Watch Dogs Legion are both $49.99 for preorder on Amazon (assuming they’re matching Walmart’s standard release day price).

Locked them both in since they have free PS5 upgrades.

Ah yeah thanks for reminding me about that about the late releases. I do hope a PS5 version comes out. I love Spelunky though and played the original and the Vita version more times than I could count.

I had an Amazon pre-order at $40 for Watch Dogs Legion that I recently canceled. Just couldn't justify it given all the DLC and how quick the price of Ubisoft base games drop.

Does anyone recommend Farpoint and Firewall for PSVR without the aim controller? Not sure I want to pay that much for it not knowing if I'll like the games.

It's been such a long time since I've played those games but I'd say Farpoint is kinda mediocre on it's own and is likely not worth it without the novelty of the Aim. Firewall has a criminally bad quality of life issue as you have 5 minute rounds and then wait in a lobby for 2-3 minutes in between each. I hear the dualshock controls are also mediocre but that's from comments years old that could have been improved through many patches. Firewall is extremely well supported and likely has a healthy community so you may find more up to date info on dualshock support.

I mainly just buy the gold versions once they get around the $25-$30ish range. I got burned by Watch Dogs 2 for sure and wont do that again. Plus I'm just not the biggest fans of any of their series. I haven't played all the new ones, but that's mainly lack of interest.

I know that feel, I had jumped on the ~$40 price too, and then ended up recently canceling because as you said, it's a Ubi game, it WILL go down.
I was debating dropping AC:V for the same reason, but at least with that one I can justify it being a game I will most likely play when it releases... though I'm still not 100% sure I won't end up canceling and just buying it later on for that 20-30 rate.

RE: Ghosts of Tsushima on a base PS4; the last big level of the game simply runs like absolute dogshit on mine. If you haven't played it, I imagine it's gonna be a lot more fun on a PS5.

Wait till Wednesday and then see about saving up for a PS5. There really is no reason to get a PS4 this late in the life cycle unless you get a ridiculous deal on one. If you do decide to go with a PS4, go with the pro.

Yes, it can get obnoxiously loud with some games, but if you keep it well ventilated it will be fine. The difference in performance is worth the higher cost.
