Please. They've adjusted to a much stronger market position and are naturally grabbing the bigger profits that are right in front of them. But compared to the PS3 transition, the behavior isn't even close. Not close.

100% not this.
The transition from PS2 to PS3 is comparable to PS4 to PS5. Sony is going into this on top again, and they are acting like they are going into this on top again.

At least they're not removing rumble support in the controller because "it's last generation" like the Sixaxis. When we all knew it's because Sony didn't want to pay any royalties to the company holding the patent.

One thing they have learned though is to not price the console higher than their competition unlike back then. When the cheaper model was still more than the 360 Pro bundle.

I have to admit, in my opinion, some of the greatest advances in how we control games have come from Dualshock controllers in the advent of the rumble feature, speaker, and light bar.  The rumble, of course, speaks for itself.  It's also incredibly cool for those moments like in GTA when the cops' radio will come across the speaker and the lightbar will flash red and blue to indicate you're being chased, etc.

Of course, that being said, I hate to admit that I never use the vibration or the speaker.  :(  Both are turned off in the system menu due to the fact that I often play games on mute while talking to my girlfriend on the phone.  She can hear the speaker and even the vibration through the phone and would kill me if she knew I was playing a game while talking to her. It's just easier to keep them permanently off than to constantly turn them off and on based on whether or not I'm on the phone.

Hopefully the haptic technology in the Dualsense won't be a similar situation.  :(

Wait, honest question, wasn't Nintendo first with rumble (N64) and the speaker (Wii)? I don't know if the PS controllers have been quite so game changing, but Sony is really good at improving on the controller tech that exists elsewhere (except for the DS3 triggers, those were just awful)

You're right, actually. I completely forgot about the N64's rumble pack and the Wii's speaker. I guess Nintendo's consoles are like a fever dream to me now, anything after the SNES has thankfully been purged from my memory.

Any relationship where you have to hide that you're playing games or else the other person will kill you is sure going to be a long lasting and healthy one.

You're right, actually. I completely forgot about the N64's rumble pack and the Wii's speaker. I guess Nintendo's consoles are like a fever dream to me now, anything after the SNES has thankfully been purged from my memory.
Nintendo has always been the leader in controller technology and design. The D-Pad is theirs (NES). Shoulder buttons (SNES). Thumbstick analogs and rumble (N64). Analog triggers and good RF wireless (Gamecube/Wavebird). Motion control and speakers (Wii). Touchscreen (DS). Even if you aren't a fan of theirs, you have to admit they put some great design into their controller options that pretty much every other console eventually picks up. And yeah I know they didn't invent many of these things, they just figured out how to effectively integrate them into a controller.

It's not that I have to hide the fact that I play games; she knows I play games. It's that she thinks it's impossible to both play a game and talk on the phone at the same time. As gamers, we all know that's second nature to be able to play games while doing other things. I'm sure most of us are sitting on our headsets talking to our friends while playing a completely separate game and we're doing it perfectly fine. She's not a gamer, though, and thinks that if I'm playing a game, then I'm not paying attention to what she's saying.

Well explain to her that you can pay attention while gaming and problem solved. Does she expect you to sit staring at a blank wall while on the phone?

I kind of agree with this sentiment. You should at the very least have this conversation with her and explain that you can multitask and remain engaged in the conversation with her. My girlfriend in college had a somewhat similar disposition and would get mad when I'm having some decompression time gaming and she wanted my undivided attention. Mind you, I could still fully participate in whatever conversation she and my roommates were having, but eventually that was a contributing factor to our breakup.

My wife now fully understands how I use gaming to relax. We play together sometimes, and can have conversations while doing so. She also respects my time as I hers, but I got that out of the way very early in our relationship and had a good discussion about it. At the least, hopefully she would appreciate that you are having the discussion.

I get this as well but think the conversation should happen. I had a girlfriend who would get very upset when she heard keys clacking on the keyboard or the mouse clicking while I was on the phone with her. At first I just avoided these things but then I came to the conclusion that it was ridiculous since I could still pay attention and have the conversation. If I had been spaced out or asking her to repeat herself every two seconds I would have understood her point- the problem was with her was she wasn't trying to hear that or any explanation. It was actually indicative of some very toxic tendencies on her part and an inability to see the perspectives of others. Needless to say, eventually that relationship imploded but its always a good thing to at least be able to explain yourself and be heard without fear of reprisal.

I guarantee she doesn't give him her full attention during phone calls either.
In any case, sounds like very high maintenance behavior. There's a time and place for demanding someone's full attention on a phone call.

Got all the regular Ghostbuster rewards but the Slimer topper this morning (need four more assists). I have four pumpkin loot box opportunities left, hope the Ecto-1 pops up.
Crap, it's only available for purchase for like 24hrs. I don't mind splurgin' for it or the Batmobile (if it ever goes on sale again), but at least keep it available through the entire course of the event. It's like they don't want to make money.

This is why my wife and I have been married for 23 years. We understand that we need to have time apart from each other and when there are really important things to discuss, we stop what we are doing to talk to one another.

Knowing and understanding what your similarities and differences are is, in my opinion, the key to a long relationship. If you hide them, you're not being honest and that will hurt both of you eventually.

Again, just my opinion.

This is nonsense. Some of the circumstances of the differing time periods vary, but it is extremely apt to compare Sony’s actions going into these specific gens.
The two biggest mistakes Sony made with the PS3 were the exotic, unnecessary architecture which hamstrung game development, and FIVE HUNDRED NINETY-NINE US DOLLARS.

This time around they have followed up the PS4 with another sensible, straightforward hardware design, and gone out of their way to offer a $399 SKU despite every indication the consoles still have a very high BOM. This is a clear choice to do the OPPOSITE of what has gotten ridiculed about the PS3 to this day (as well as costing sales and market share).

If you don't see the importance here, or that they are clearly still paying heed to those lessons, I don't know what to tell you.

i dim the light, turn off speaker and rumble to conserve battery. only turn it on when it is crucial to playing the game.. lockpicking, sensing loot, etc.

Also I could see turning the volume down but turning off the vibration on your controller because she might hear it? C'mon.
How do you think I learned that I needed to turn the vibration off to begin with? I was playing some game where I was blowing something up and every time I shot things, the controller vibrated. She asked, "What is that noise, is that on your end?" I realized it was the controller vibration, so I turned it off and she hadn't heard it since.

Trust me, guys, we've been together for 7.5 years and I know her ways at this point. There is no explaining, "I can handle playing games while I talk on the phone with you." This is a girl where, if we're out at a restaurant and I happen to be looking around the room as she's talking to me, she'll stop speaking until I look at her because she wants my undivided attention.

I wish the speaker had gotten more use. It's one of my favorite little features on the PS4... The touchpad and the lightbar ended up largely irrelevant or even a hinderance though.

I have to admit, in my opinion, some of the greatest advances in how we control games have come from Dualshock controllers in the advent of the rumble feature, speaker, and light bar.
Wait, what? The first vibrating controller, at least from a first party, came from Nintendo in the form of the N64 rumble pack. The first controller with a speaker from a first party was the Wii Remote.

Even ignoring their origins, those (and especially the light bar) are useless gimmick features and always have been. If you want to praise Sony controllers for actual meaningful advancement, the whole dual analog thing jumps immediately to mind, as does the four shoulder button layout that has since become essentially industry standard.

Can probably also at least partially blame Sony for allowing d-pad quality to become such a minor concern for even first party controllers, and for splitting confirm/cancel layouts between Japan and the west.

The PlayStation web store seemingly just updated in front of my eyes as I was doing my weekly browsing of it. The new design will definitely take some getting used to!

Yeah, I was reminded of that about a page back. I had completed forgotten about them. I was a huge Nintendo fanboy up until they dropped the ball with the N64; once every new console released moved further away from "Now You're Playing With Power" and into "Now You're Playing with Gimmicks" territory, I stopped paying attention. I think I only owned like, two games that used the N64 Rumble Pak, and I don't recall the Wiimote's speaker used for anything other than the occasional short sound effect (at least in the games I've played), so it's very easy to forget about Nintendo's implementation of them.

Not only did they do away with the wishlist, but they also scrapped the Sort and Filter options. Are they going to restore functionality later, I wonder, or is this a permanent downgrade?

As of right now the PlayStation app has the store the old way complete with the wish list still intact so if you don’t like seeing that right now just use the PlayStation app.

Literally the only relatively creative usage of a controller speaker I can recall is from No More Heroes, which used it for the cell phone calls. As far as Nintendo gimmicks go, they only really started down that path with the Wii, the N64 and GameCube were more at least theoretically more powerful than the Sony offerings of those generations. Theoretically because they gimped themselves with their storage media choices and drove off a lot of third-party developers.

The N64 was pretty experimental. The controller was weird, there was the rumble pack for it and wasn't there a thing you could put in the system to make it a little more powerful? That was all pretty out there at the time.

Well the new store is garbage. Before the updates happened I bought UltraCore for PS Vita and Mummy Demastered for PS4. Most likely the only other digital game I will buy from Sony will be Bugsnax on PS4 so I wont have to use this crappy store front too often anymore. I bet if I can wait Bugsnax will get a physical release down the line.

So PS3 and Vita games don't show but I used the search function to look for flOw and I was able to get a screen with icons for the PS4/PS3 and Vita editions with an option to download individually (to where I don't know).

I search for Patapon and Loco Roco and only the Remastered versions come up (so no Vita option)

Patapon 3 which was not released on PS4 doesn't show up at all.

Uncharted Golden Abyss (again Vita only) does not come up in the search.

Puzzle Quest shows up for PS4 but not the PSP (Vita playable) version

So far on the Android phone app, I can find all those PSVita and PSP games

You know, even if I can't buy the games on the web store, I still would like the ability to see what I've already purchased for Vita/PS3/PSP.

I mean, that's just simple data.  I'm asking for too much, aren't I?

I definitely assumed the Library view would at least show legacy software attached to your profile. I have a ton of PS1 games and it's hard to remember which ones you have or don't. I really wish they weren't abandoning those old games, especially since they are easy to emulate.

Thing is, there really weren’t any standard practices in those days. The N64 had the first controller to implement analog controls into the default controller, so the shape was born out of trying to make a layout that worked well for both 2D games (using the d-pad) and 3D games (using the stick). Endless accessories were also more normal back then—the N64 came out, what, only a couple years after the 32X? In fact, the rumble pak and expansion pak in particular were in many ways more consumer friendly than the alternative. Instead of shelling out for a new controller with a vibration feature as you would have with a PS1, you could just buy the accessory. Similarly, instead of buying a whole new PS4 Pro, you could just buy a small piece of equipment to get an N64 “pro.”

How do you think the new website will affect PSPrices.com? Is that site pulling info from the web store? If so, then shall we expect this to be the death of price updates on vita and ps3?

I'm pretty sure we knew Vita and PS3 prices would never be discounted again when Sony first announced they were phasing their sections out of the online store.

That's a weird complaint. That comes down to a culture thing. In the West, you use X to mark things. In East Asia, you circle to mark things. So they were flipped for pretty much culture reasons alone.

Edit: Corrections. Probably still wrong. Point is, cultural differences.

I've been wondering that myself. I know the change already broke PSDLE. Hopefully that team can figure out a way to get it working again.

You guys weren't kidding, the new store is garbage.  It feels like a beta.  To add to the other complaints, using the same font for everything makes it harder to quickly spot purchases, sale prices etc.

Anyone ever have the problem where they go to "New games" on ps4 and it jumps you into the "New VR Games" it happens quite often and I know its not user error.
