You pretty much have to use the stand horizontally due to the lopsided shape of the system.

 
Just wanted to thank all the beta testers out there. In two years, we should have all the kinks worked out, the system redesigned with a larger SSD and an actual library to get worked up for. Thanks everyone!
 
First day with PS5 has been incredible. Astro's is really fun, Bugsnax was super charming, I love the Dualsense in both, and the UI in general is a vast improvement. There's almost nothing I don't prefer.

Only complaint so far is that some games do adaptive triggers really badly, namely Borderlands 3. The next gen upgrade for that was garbage and I regret even dropping $10 on it. Most backwards compatible stuff I've tried hasn't really blown me away with the upgrades, but they've been fine.

 
All right, if there are going to be two pages of people talking about Souls games, SOMEONE has to mention the games that started it all : King's Field. The atmosphere, soundtracks, and sense of adventure in those games are still amazing to this day. And you can thank them for every Souls game that came after.

I have to disagree 1000% about the UI. I hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate the new UI.

My feelings as far as the UI goes ranges from a couple mixed feelings to a bunch of negatives and I honestly can't think of a single positive about it. The mixed is, of course, the lack of themes. This is only mixed because I'm not a huge themes person so it's not that big a deal, but I do love my Thunderstorms dynamic theme on the PS4. However, we've now taken a step back to the days of PS3 where the background would change depending on which game we currently have selected. Except, at least with the PS3, it would display your theme when you didn't have a game selected. That doesn't happen here at all. You're just stuck with a static image of whatever icon you have selected. Also, I could take or leave the "Explore" icon. It just doesn't do a thing for me, I couldn't care less about popular videos of games I've played or videos or some product they're trying to sell me.

The negatives? Well, to start out, on the PS4, a lot of important information was displayed at the top of the main screen at all times, such as how many friends you have online or your trophy level. Both of that information is gone now. If you want to see how many friends are online, you have to hit the PS button and look down at the bottom of the screen for the "Game Base icon to tell you. Seeing your trophy level takes longer, as you have to navigate into your profile information to find your trophy information.

On PS4, if you wanted to know which friends were online, you simply had to press up from the main ribbon, go into Friends, and you could see each friend in a row that displayed the game they were playing and their trophy level. You could even put them in custom groups, such as I'd have a group for friends I know in real life, friends from CAG, friends I met playing different online games like Overwatch or The Crew, etc.

On PS5, you have to hit the PS button, navigate to Game Base, scroll down to the bottom of the list and choose "View All Friends", and then you get to see large icons for each friend in a 2x4 layout instead of just rows. Each icon shows just the game their playing but not their trophy info. On the plus side, you can see eight friends at once unlike four on the PS4, on the negative, it was easier for me to find who I was looking for when it was simply rows, but now I have to search all around the screen because there are two rows of four columns. I used to like scrolling down my friend list and looking at what trophy level all my friends were (Vigilante has the highest with a whopping 716!) but now I can't do that. You have to click into each friend's profile one-by-one now to see their trophy level.

On PS4, looking at your personal trophies is as easy as pressing up from the main ribbon, going into Trophies, and each game had it's own row. You click into them and you can see a list of rows showing what you have and what you are missing. and keep them sorted a certain way (I prefer to keep them sorted by earned date with the newest trophies I've earned on top and the unearned ones on the bottom.)

On PS5, you have to navigate into your profile, go down into Trophies and you'll get the row of games (nice they kept that the same) but go into a game and instead of rows of trophies, you now you have the huge icons again for each trophy, and it will not remember your preferred sort order. Each time you back out of a list and go into one, it's reset back to the default trophy list order.

Then there's the abundance of all the worthless icons on your ribbon that you can't get rid of. I will never, ever, ever subscribe to PS Now, so why won't you let me delete the stupid icon? PS Plus should be a subsection of the store, there is really no reason it should have it's own icon (and don't even get me started on how unintuitive the store, and by extension your own Game Library, is now. By the way, the Wishlist does not carry over the items from the webstore, so expect to do a lot of manual searches by name to re-add them to this new list, since the store doesn't make it very easy.) Anyway, I really hope that as I add more games to my list, it will push things off the ribbon like it did on the PS4, because I really don't need a ribbon full of junk I'm never going to use.

And a minor gripe, but I am so used to closing games by holding the PS button for the Quick Menu, and the first option being "Close Game". On the PS5, there is no holding down the PS button, you have to press it, then navigate to the game icon, click it, and choose "Close Game" from there. Shutting down the system was just as easy on the PS4, hold PS button for quick menu, go down to Power and clicking "Enter Rest Mode". On the PS5, press PS button and navigate all the way to the end of the menu to get to Power.

Anyway, who knows what else may end up irking me about the UI, as I've only spent a could hours exploring it so far, but as things stand, I am soooooo not a fan.

Anybody know when PS5 versions of Assassin's Creed Valhalla and Watch Dog Legion are supposed to release? I installed both discs on my PS5 yesterday but they both have the PS4 icon on them...

They were considering $80 as an option as well. Pray they don't alter the deal further. . .

First day impressions:

- Demon's Souls is every bit the remaster I could have asked for; it is truly the system seller for the PS5.

- I was able to fit (hide) my PS5 in my entertainment center and it looks. . .just out of place. The first thing I want to do with this console is rip those awful white panels off and replace it with matte black whenever a 3rd party can avoid Sony's lawyers. Cannot express just how much I hate the color scheme honestly.

- The controller. Yeah. . .the people gushing over the 'HD rumble' and speaker are blowing it out of proportion. A. the speaker already existed in PS4; NOBODY fuckING USED IT. B. the haptic feedback isn't present as far as I can tell in Demon's Souls, so can't comment. Sounds like most people either love it in their game (Astro Boy) or hate it (Borderlands 3, COD; basically shooters). Yeah, I already miss my PS4 controller because there's nothing for me to love about the new one, and I'm not a fan of the smaller options and share buttons. Feels too small IMO. Thanks for the forced 'upgrade' Sony. : \

-The PS collection did excite me, if only for future potential. I was able to basically dump half the games on my shelf into a pile of "to be sold" as I declutter a bit. I was/am hard against digital purchases, but as a sub I'm OK with it since I'm not buying anything permanently.

-The speed of boot, into a game, et al are mind-blowing but actually less impactful as Xbox Series X already spoiled that moment. This was more of an expectation than a wow moment heh. That said, for either console I would never go back. Then again, I've been gaming for years on PC with an SSD so the wow factor was more from a standpoint of moving from one console to the other.

Overall, I'm loving the new generation of consoles and Xbox has already solidified my hardware of choice thanks to Game Pass. The PS5 will definitely get use as I catch up on first party exclusives (mainly TLOU II), but otherwise I'll probably only be reminded it's there whenever the sun beams blindingly off its white ass. :lol:

On this note, doing some reading last night and it seems that many problems that people were having can be traced to either using an external hard drive or copying files straight from their PS4 to the PS5. Seems like there may be some issue in the PS5 reading files that were created on the PS4 so maybe try and avoid that just for now to be safe.

Nioh 2 remastered for PS5 was announced. Looks like of you own the PS4 version you can upgrade for free. Nioh 1 remastered was also announced but not sure if that one gets the free upgrade. I've had Nioh 2 sitting here since launch and haven't gotten very far so this will be good motivation to jump back in.
 
Oh damn, Nioh 2 remastered in Feb. That's awesome. I can't wait to play that. Got about 30 hours in but didn't quite finish Nioh 2 this year. I wonder what else is gonna get PS5 upgrades this year. I'm hoping for TLOU2 next or FF7R.

NiOh 1 Remastered likely isn't a free upgrade because the original NiOh was a free game through PS+.

If Nioh 1 does get a free upgrade, it'll probably be for the "complete" edition with the DLC, and not the free base game they gave out with PS+... I'm wondering just how "remastered" these games are going to be though. They only mention 4k and high framerates, where personally I'd like some new post-processing and lighting effects more than anything. The games look good enough as is on basic material quality, animations, etc.

The worst part about the terrible UI is we are stuck with it for the whole generation. Sony hasn't made any major changes to a PS interface before, just minor fixes and additions.

Had a good time playing one of the Astro worlds yesterday but trying to start Spider-Man Remastered resulted in 2 crashes and me just going to bed instead of waiting for it to boot up/rebuild again. Guess I have to try later with my PS4 HDD unplugged.

On PS4, I can access a game's cloud saves by hitting options on the selected game and then selecting Upload/Download Saved Data. I still can't find a quick way to do this on PS5. I have to select the PS Plus icon, then hit the cloud icon at the top, select PS4, and scroll through the list of every game on the cloud to find the particular game I want to download saves for. I agree that the UI is a step backwards and everything takes too many steps to do.

I have various complaints about the PS5 UI as well (stop removing folders video game companies) but one thing I will say is the activities feature works exactly like I hoped it would and I really enjoy it. Being able to jump into a specific part of a game from the home menu is just really practical and saves time. Dunno how the process works from game to game but on Astro's Playroom it loads whatever level you selected immediately after a short load screen completely skipping the intro splash screens and title screen. 

 
The activity feed, Live From Playstation and the "deals" sections in the store are what I'm missing most from the PS5 UI. The trophy notification sound is too quiet for my liking as well. I like the DualSense a lot so far. Had an enjoyable time getting 100% of the trophies in Astro's Playroom and I even like the way the adaptive triggers are used in Borderlands 3. 

 
I'm almost done setting up my PS4 external and I'll begin trying out the games. I only played some Astro last night since everything taking a while to install. I may be in the extreme minority, but I find the actual system in person to be one ugly Mofo. It feels unbalanced and ugly IMHO. It's one big mofo too. Takes up the full space in a spot under my TV. It's taking me a bit to get used to the controller. I feel the thumb sticks are looser feeling almost. I am not platforming as well with them. Lots of neat features on the controller though. I'm also not as used to the rougher texture where you hold in in the back. Not as impressed as some are, other than the fast loading which is excellent and very nice graphics so far. This controller feels like the biggest change in a while, since IMHO the PS controlers haven't changed as much PS1-4. This one feels bulkier and a bit different. The touchpad in the middle of the controller works way better than the PS4 one at least.

I'm thinking about keeping the X1X simply because it's sleek and might be good in the bedroom if we ever put a TV there. That and I don't feel like I'd get the amount I'd want for it without going out of my way.

PS4 controller batteries were notably bad when it came to play time between charges.

Sony put a much bigger battery in the DualSense, so I’m glad the improvements are noticeable.

I got offered $900 cash for my Series X & I just couldn't pass that up. So I got a One X from craigslist for $175 and my PS5 will be my primary console. I skipped Xbox last gen so I'll finally get to try game pass on the cheaper console.

The thing that surprised me about the UI is the complete lack of Themes. You can do colors and such, but there are no themes at all. I guess they consider each item to have it's own "theme", instead of one for everything. The controller is smaller than I anticipated, but feels really good. The console, of course, is freaking huge. The design is cool, but it just towers over the Series X next to it.

Demon's Souls looks great, especially in HDR where those dank environments really work now. Spider-man, well it's great but it was great before. It's great with more sparkle. Haven't tried the 60fps mode yet though. Of everything so far in the next gen consoles, I think Gears 5 on Series X is probably the most impressive looking of them all - the game isn't for everyone, but damn it looks amazing and butter smooth.

 
Going to test some interesting things for PS4 backwards compatibility today. Going to try an Asian English release and see if it freaks out. One of the Super Robot Wars games to be exact. Some of my digital games had to get updates slowly so that will be fun. Beat Astro's playroom. That thing is the Dark Souls of platformers. Maddening especially with the rolling the ball stages. I take back how that mid thing is more responsive. I think I died 100+ times in that game getting the ending. Also it's around 3 hours long. Good demo of PS5 technology, though nothing amazing. Really cute though with good graphics and good throwbacks. If anyone wants me to test something specifically like an RPG or something go ahead and tell me and I'll see if it works if I own it. Going to try out Spider-man remastered later (played some on PS4 but didn't get far). It's a real nice system and I'm sure I'll be hopefully wowed when I play Demon's Souls eventually.
