The Kotaku article said possible permanent bans for the PS5s and 2 month bans for the PS4 player accounts. Not sure if any more info came out since then.

"According to those on the receiving end, PS5s caught up to no good are possibly seeing permanent bans from network services, while the purchasers’ PS4 accounts are looking at a two-month ban."
Weren't those people selling access to that stuff and some were up to something like 50 accounts in a short period of time, which triggered the automatic system for assuming an account was hacked/stolen?

"It’s one thing to ask your buddy to log in as you on their new machine, to gain access to the likes of God Of War, Arkham Knight, Fallout 4, Last Of Us Remastered, Ratchet & Clank... It’s another to start selling the service on eBay."

See, that's really the reason I asked: it doesn't seem particularly "scammy" to like, let my brother log into my console and claim the games. That seems totally normal and ordinary and something I wouldn't even really question the acceptability of. But how the hell am I supposed to know how Sony is telling someone who logs into their PS5 with a few different accounts of some family or friends from someone who is selling the access on eBay?

If they start cracking down on the eBay sellers, how are they doing that and how do I know my account is safe from being targeted in whatever way they decide to try to target the eBay sellers?

There's zero transparency and zero accountability to any of this. We've all paid hundreds of dollars for all the games on our accounts, but we own absolutely nothing, and Sony (same thing on any other digital platform) can freely take it all away on a whim for absolutely any reason they want; it doesn't have to be reasonable and they don't have to get it right and there's no recourse for me if they don't.

Hell, come to think of it, I've done similar things like use my brother's Xbox One to claim some sort of Taco Bell rewards thing for myself, and at the time I didn't even think I was "scamming" the system in any way. I just said "cool, taco bell gave me a code to redeem on an Xbox One, my bro has one of those, awesome".

Dude, they are not going to scour their entire install base account by account searching for any ratio that feels slightly off. Can you understand how that would be a massive waste of manhours and logistically unfeasible?

Instead, the system is auto-redflagging consoles that have a massive amount of different account log-ins. This is piggybacking off of existing fraud detection (i.e. hackers breaking into many accounts to buy FIFA points or whatever). The number that got brought up in the article was 50 different accounts in a short time.

Do you have 50 brothers? Then you don't need to worry about it. If you start creeping into double digits with friends, coworkers, that homeless guy on your block, etc. then whatever happens, happens. That risk is on you.

...but I also really don't want physical media anymore.... decisions decisions...
I prefer having a physical copy. I forget which games I have when I go digital and want to go rummaging for something old to play. I'm likely to look on my physical shelf 9 out of 10 times than my digital gallery.

I mean, we physical enthusiasts have been fighting this for the last decade at least by not purchasing digital. Was this an epiphany lol?

Since the new PS Store has seemingly no descriptions I could find, once you pick it up could you just let me know what's actually in the bundle and if it's worth it. Haven't played Shenmue 3 yet and would prefer to have all expansions I'd need ahead of playing so might be worth picking up but I feel like I remember hearing people saying the dlc was not good. Then again I feel like I might remember people saying the same about the game
All the DLC is in the bundle. I have read mixed reviews about the DLC but this is when it cost $14.99. I have to think most of the people would be recommending the DLC it is was half the price. The shenmue dojo forums https://www.shenmuedojo.com/forum/index.php would be helpful for you. I can give you my opinion sure but not sure when I will play all of it or how long it will take me. I have to think it will be worth it at half price.

This is the impression I got as well. You let a buddy redeem through your PS5? You're probably fine. But people charging money and running 70-80 account redemptions through their system is just obvious abuse.

There was that one dummy here that gave 150+ of his "friends" access to the collection. Then wondered why his console got banned.

For those of you who either can't find a Dualsense Charging Station or would just prefer not to buy one, I suggest one of these.  I've been using it for about a week and it's performed great.  Since it's USB-C on both ends, you can plug it into the actual super-speed USB-C port on the front of the PS5 unlike the charging cable that actually comes with the PS5 which plugs into the regular USB port.  It gives much faster charging, will actually charge in rest mode, and it's 6.6 feet, so you don't have to sit right up on top of your TV if you need to charge while playing.

I mean, is there a limit to the amount of people that are allowed access? 150 sounds like a lot but what number is officially against the ToS?

Any number is against the ToS, but they don't ban everyone that breaks the ToS. The threshold is probably fairly high, but to be careful just don't do it if you're worried about getting banned. If you haven't been banned yet and your behavior doesn't change, you won't be.

Is this the right way to go about handling the situation? I dunno; the details matter and we simply don't know them. I have no sympathy for people who were selling access to the PS+ Collection, but if you got banned for helping out 10 friends or less, that's not reasonable.

Administration in all areas requires judgment. The best way is to write overbroad rules so that you can make case by case decisions and avoid catching people unfairly. After all, anything loophole proof that's sufficiently complex is hard to also make comprehensible and enforceable.

Yeah for sure. It's a risk that people have to decide if they want to take or not. The abusers get no sympathy from me though.

The fact that we're having this conversation here is just strange. People are looking for justification for them giving away access to things that people that should not be entitled to and those people are hoping that others will say, "Yes, give things away for free!"

I mean, if you are able to give away something for free without much burden on your part, then yeah, the cool & nice thing to do is give it away for free. That applies to a lot of things in life, not just video games downloads that aren't even tangible objects. The fault lies with Sony for making it so easy to do, along with not giving PS4 players acess to these PS4 games in the first place, since PS4 owners are obviously paying PS+ members as well.

I have no sympathy for the people selling access to these games though.

In my opinion, helping out 10 or even 5 friends is not reasonable.

I'm paying my money to Sony to get these benefits. People gaming the system makes it less likely that they'll do it again in the future.

Yes, I know, evil money grubbing company, so on, so on, but we used to be able to share games with five accounts, now it's two, I guess, because of these abuses.

I think it's at least somewhat generous that Sony is giving us these PS Collection games on the PS5. They could give us nothing extra. I mean, they absolutely should give us free stuff for the money we're spending and I'm still fuming I don't get Vita/PSP/PS3 games anymore. Also, Sony should allow full Cloud Save backup for subaccounts.

But Sony seems to be a Saint compared with Nintendo, who charges a different amount for online access if you want your kid's subaccounts to be able to use it (the Family Plan) on the same and only Switch that you have AND who only lets you play downloaded games on the master account on the second "non-primary" Switch if you have two.

*I’m not talking about the people who sold their ps5 access as a service*

You know, if people could actually buy a ps5 right now they might not have to ask their friends to use their ps5 to claim the instant game collection. Hopefully Sony will keep the collection claimable until there is a steady stream of ps5s available for purchase. I was going to ask my friend to let me log in to his ps5 when he got it, but he wasn’t able to secure on either

Wow, you actually believe they are doing this by hand. LMFAO.

Any number is against the ToS,
Please point to where in the ToS it says you're not allowed to allow a friend or family member to log into your PS5? Or ever resell your PS5 on the used market?

That would be good to know, and I bet a bunch of media outlets would be interested in covering that story. Parents going out and buying a PS5 for their kids this holiday season probably do not understand that Sony prohibits multiple people from using the console.

I said families only because that's the first thing I thought of, but I've seen consoles in frat houses, church youth groups, rec centers, I've even seen libraries that loan out consoles. Hell, I shared a console back in college with my roommates and nobody would have thought for a second this was a violation of ToS. They literally regularly portray consoles being used in group settings in their marketing. If "any number" is against the ToS, most of the clips they use in their marketing of people enjoying the console are violating the ToS.

People have given away games with consoles for decades, and the way of handling these situations is incredibly simple: you simply include a one-time-use code in the box that allows you to claim the promotion. If you don't want to print a physical code, you can make it a one-time-use digital redeemable in the software that's tied to the system's serial number, so you click a button to "claim" it so it can be tied to only one account, then after that it can't be redeemed anymore for any other account. It's very simple. Nintendo, Microsoft, and even Sony themselves have done exactly this in the past.

They specifically didn't do that, and the only possible reason for them to deliberately choose not to do it that way is if they are expecting multiple PS Plus accounts to claim the benefit on one console.

I think if it's actually true that "any number is against the ToS", that at least the Today show or someone covering the holiday shopping season would be interested in writing an article about such an insane policy.

My guess is there is absolutely no such provision in the ToS.

There's probably something vague about "benefits provided by PS Plus are not transferable" etc etc, and "unusual login activity" etc, and also "we can ban you and take away all the games you bought at any time for any reason with no justification" etc. But nothing that could be reasonably interpreted as explicitly prohibiting "any number" of people greater than 1 from logging into one console, which implicitly would prohibit you from reselling your PS5 on the used market to someone else (who could then also log in to the console and claim the games) etc.

Of course not. I've realized this is a problem for a long time now.

However I've also realized that, at least for games, physical is barely a thing: for many games, the "physical copy" is just a license as well, you still have to connect to download patches etc, and sometimes you need to connect to a server just to play at all.

I think the only reasonable model for digital purchases is the streaming service model. That way at least then you know you're only subscribing to a service, and aren't under some misapprehension that you actually "own" anything.

It's already taken over music (Spotify) and obviously movies and television with dozens of streaming platforms.

For games, the replacement for digital purchases should be Playstation Now and Game Pass and etc. It moves away from this mistaken idea that you actually own anything when you buy digital licenses.

The only real solution for digital purchases is strong consumer protection laws. All the "dur they're a private company, dur they can do whatever they want dur Sony doesn't have to give us anything!" idiots are an absolutely plague: the reality is that in a functioning capitalist society, yes you have a free market and the contracts people go into are voluntary, BUT at the same time you have a strong set of consumer protection laws.

I mean, a lot of consumer protection law that exists clearly applies to digital purchases as well. But that relies on tenuous and difficult analogies. Courts and the executive have clearly shown that they're going to treat it differently in some ways. A lot of it hasn't been litigated. The idea that "you agreed to the ToS end of story" is idiotic: it's not clear at all that many of the provisions in these ToS's conform with applicable consumer protection laws already in place. Let alone ones that we as consumers should be advocating for instead of spouting "muh private company do whatever they want!" bullshit.

Frankly nobody fucking reads Terms of Service. You could be signing up for a HUMANCENTiPAD for all you know. And if you want to play a game, what difference does the ToS make? Your choice is either sign whatever the fuck they ask, or don't play at all: agree, or be locked out of this portion of society. That's not a choice. "Voting with your wallet" isn't a fucking thing: the only real advocate for consumers is legislation that places some restrictions on how these transactions can be arranged, and what rights you're entitled to as a consumer.

They have a ton of different terms of service, but this one is probably the most relevant here. But I'm sure this breaks rules on other ToS documents: https://www.playstation.com/en-us/legal/psn-terms-of-service/#playstation-store

ToS provisions users broke by selling/helping other people get access to the PS5 collection: 5.10, 10.2, 10.3, 10.6

Provisions around being banned and having your console banned: 12.2, 12.3, 12.5

You are not allowed to share your account information with others: 3.3

Please, please, please, if you're going to make a ton of inferences about what the ToS does or doesn't have, and if you're going to call BS on other people, make a 5 minute attempt to google it and verify you're actually right. It's not respectful to other people's time to make them do it.

Thanks for doing your due diligence even when he didn't. You've proved more in a few sentences than he did in his multiple rambling, conjecture filled wall o text posts.

Streaming some Spirit of the North: Enhanced Edition on the PS5 (link).

Edit: Here's the archive of the stream. It's a solid adventure platformer with some puzzles to solve throughout the game, but nothing too hard from what I've seen so far unless you're just missing something obvious. Probably best to get on sale versus the full $25 right now.

Please stop, that poor man has a family

Installing COD Cold War on a PS5 is a clusterf**ck. It only defaults to installing MP and Zombies. The campaign is three separate downloads. Get the first part at 26 GB and takes probably 30 minutes before you already need the second part.

Seriously aggravating experience!

Installing CoD was a nightmare for PS4 for Modern Warfare too. So many segmented downloads for multiplayer alone.
On the bright side, the fact that it was so segmented apparently made it so you could later uninstall parts of it separately to save space on that like 200 GB monstrosity.

As somebody still using their 1080p plasma, this new mode pleases me.  Time to resume my playthrough.

Insomniac dev also confirmed that the mode will be coming to SMR soon.
