I'm sure Monster Hunter World is good (since everyone says so), but that sword in the trailer is utterly idiotic. Why do Japanese games feel the need to make swords the size of your entire body?? Final Fantasy VII has the same stupidity.
Um, because it's a fantasy video game. If you're looking for realism, I don't know what to tell you...

Sword? you only noticed about Sword size in JPN games? Like their weird hairdo, ridiculous wardrobe and androgynous half male/half female is not moronic and idiotic.

But you have no problem with western games like Doom and Ratchet and Clank having guns as large as you and carrying like 10 at a time?

Imagine having this little of an imagination.

Enjoy only ever playing sim games.

Yes, well worth it assuming you like action rpgs. Story based, open world, lots of good side quests, interesting fighting mechanics. Won't go below 20 dollars probably until Black Friday. I'd get it at 25.

If you don’t have time to play it why get it? Next sale you can pull the trigger.

Yes at that price it's a no brainer even if it goes into the backlog at least you got it for a steal. That game should be in your top 3 ps4 exclusives to play.

Honestly, I'd wait. It's probably my GotY last year (and probably second best PS4 exclusive after Bloodborne), but unless you're going to play it NOW, it will go down more.

There is a new Gold Wireless headset coming out later this month for $99.99, which seems to have just gotten a redesign to be more comfortable to wear. It seems to have the same features the previous headset had, like 7.1 and the 3.5 mm cable to use it with PSVR.

:ps4: Warhammer 40K: Deathwatch - $23.99 - 40% Off - Ends 2/28

Yeah, Deadbolt has been out on PC for almost two years and looking at reviews, it seems to be compared to both Hotline Miami and Gunpoint.

There is a tvtropes page for almost anything ever used in a video game. It's a stupid statement to have made in the first place.
It's actually kinda funny in this specific case considering large weapons in MH behave like huge heavy weapons that are hard to swing. For example the force from the upswing attack on the greatsword is so strong the weapon gets stuck in the ground and almost causes your character to lose their footing and they struggle to pick it back up.

Why do Japanese games feel the need to make swords the size of your entire body??
You do realize that swords the length of a person were actually historically a thing, right? Zweihänders regularly pushed 7 feet long. Supposedly they were used to fight against pike formations. Even traditional Scottish greatswords regularly pushed 5 feet, which would have been a pretty reasonable height for a person at the time.

Another inspiration in these fantasy games are more traditional broad-bladed Asian swords like the dao, Chinese broadswords and the like with very wide, broad blades.

They do it because it's fucking awesome. Swords too heavy to lift and too massive to wield have been a popular theme of mythology for centuries and across continents. Get with the program.

So uh..digitally..what's the better choice?

MHW for $47.99 or Shadow of the Colossus for $31.99?

Never played either franchise.

To me, having played both, the original SOC of course, I'd pick up Monster Hunter. Shadow of the Colossus is a great experience but I think you could wait for it to hit sub $20. For about 15 bucks more you can have a larger game that should be active for a while.

I don't understand why the revised Golds have their own separate section in the updated app. Not to mention there are way less presets when you click on it.

I suppose that it's not THAT huge of a deal since they haven't been adding any new presets since MLB17 came out.

Swords as thick as tree trunk, no sir.

Giant monsters breathing fire, shooting electricity and roaring so loud you're literally incapacitated for a time. Now that I can get behind.

Depending on what’s on sale tomorrow, thinking of getting Shadow of the Colossus and Wulverblade with my coupon. Definitely SoTC, but Wulverblade depends on what is on sale.

Completely don't see the appeal of the MH games.. the thing that really turns me away is the apparently very long battles. I like battles that don't take half a day.

Quests have a 30-50 minute time limit, but yeah if you don't like Raid Boss type battles, you probably wont like MH.

I'm not really feeling the SotC remake. It looks pretty in certain obvious aspects, but the shortening/elimination of movement animations for the sake of a stable framerate make it look a little soulless to me. They really should've left that one alone.

I was reading a couple of articles on Forbes and it reaffirmed my disinterest in the series.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/erikkain/2018/01/30/5-reasons-why-monster-hunter-world-may-not-be-right-for-you/#598c3c1e4179

https://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2018/02/04/monster-hunter-world-is-good-but-its-wearing-me-out/#259dd4992e31

This is why I can't believe critics or even peer pressure popular opinion sometimes (GOTY or not). We all have our individual gaming preferences. I like a straightforward gaming experience, complete with an ending and credits to make me feel like I can move on to the next game. This is why I avoid RPGs (40+ hours) for the most part, there isn't enough time to put in all the effort required, and my backlog (and lifespan) isn't getting any shorter.

Right now I'm playing Don't Starve, and I hate it. It's way too grindy and permadeath is a bitch. After putting in so much effort and losing all my progress, why do I even bother trying. I play games for fun, not work.

It's also coming to PS4 as a free update. Here's a trailer for what it's adding:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgp8kMpEq58

For those that don't know the game, it's kind of a mash-up of Metal Slug's art style and shooting gameplay with mission structure and progression of a Monster Hunter game. It was free for PS+ early on in the PS4's life, so the Cross Buy support for Vita should unlock the game from its PS+ requirement if it works like the other games that have done that.

This article is not representative of the game in the least. If a monster takes 40 minutes to kill you need to change something, either upgrade your weapon or (more likely) you need to get better at the weapon you are playing. Most fights are designed to be in the 20-30 minute range the first time you encounter them as an average player. Repeat fights (which is the majority of the game for most people) are much quicker because you will be more prepared and understand the enemy movements better. On re-fights entry level enemies (which is like 1/3 of all enemies) should be like 5 minutes while the harder ones are like 10-15 minutes.

Really though what bugs me about this article is him talking about chasing enemies down because they run away 6 or 7 times in the middle of the fight. The game gives you tons of tools to stop enemies from running away entirely but even if they do they only run away under certain circumstances (the big one being when they're about to die) so if this dude has enemies running away 7 times on him that means his damage output is embarrassing low.

I don't really care if someone wants to play the game or not (plenty of popular games people like that I don't care about at all) but I don't really like some guy writing things down as fact that are simply him not being very good at the game. I could understand if he had only played a couple of hours and was still learning the systems but the way he talks he has played a decent chunk of the game.

Sunk 40+ hours into this.. was going to go for the plat but some of the trophies were ridiculous.. I may have to revisit it after the update though because the game is a blast.

since deus ex season pass ended today I just decided to use the coupon on it in anticipation of nothing good being on sale this week.

Not trying to be a dick here, but why are you going to Forbes, of all places, to get your gaming opinions? Is it a confirmation bias thing? They confirmed how you were already feeling about the game so you used it to reinforce those feelings?

If you’re so disinterested in the series why do you need to look up articles “reaffirming” your disinterest? It’s almost like you’re trying to prove to others that they should not be playing the game. If you don’t like it that’s fine but if your time is as valuable as you make it out to be than move on and go play a game you do enjoy instead of posting about games you don’t.

Haha, yeah, I was reading another article on Forbes and I happened to see a link on the sidebar and then it snowballed from there. Definitely confirmation bias; I disliked the beta (even though it’s not a “fair representation”) and was interested in reading similar opinions since all I hear is praise from this thread. It wasn’t even a negative opinion, just some criticism leveled at how crafty/grindy the gameplay is, which confirmed it’s not really for me.

I think the game is fun as balls, especially with friends. I hope the next one is this great, I want like 200 monsters though lol. Feeling greedy.

https://blog.us.playstation.com/2018/02/06/new-features-coming-to-ps4-in-system-software-5-50/

Some of the new features coming in PS4 FW 5.50:

Play Time Management

We’re introducing Play Time Management, which will allow family managers (and adult family members who are set as guardians) to manage PS4 playtime for child family members on family on PSN. Managing Playtime is easy; go to Settings > Family Management on your PS4, or log into your PlayStation account on your web browser from your PC or smartphone, to check and manage your child’s playtime each day. If needed, the family manager/guardians can apply playtime restrictions to make sure that the child is only playing for a set amount of time or within set playable hours. Notifications on PS4 will be sent to the child during gameplay so that he or she knows when they should save and quit. The family managers/guardians also have the option to add extra game time via their smartphone or PC. In addition, the family manager/guardians can choose whether or not to automatically log the child out of their PS4 once their playtime is over.

Library UI Updates‘This PS4’ and Name/Avatar tab

Two new tabs are being added to Library to make it easier for you to see which apps you’ve installed and purchased. The ‘This PS4’ tab lists all the applications that are installed on the PS4 system, and the tab with your name/avatar lists all the apps that you purchased with your PSN ID. This feature also makes it easy to search and find games you’ve already purchased but have not yet installed.

PS Plus tab

This update also adds a new PS Plus tab to the Library, which clarifies what games you own from PS Plus’ Monthly Free Games. If your PS Plus membership is expired, a PS Plus icon with a lock will appear next to your game so you’ll know you cannot play the game until you’ve re-subscribed.

Hide apps

We’re adding a function that will allow you to hide certain applications under the ‘Purchased’ tab in the Library. In ‘Options,’ you can hide content including betas, trials or demos of games that you probably won’t be going back to.

Quick Menu Enhancements

If you ever want to quickly access specific friends in your custom list, you’ll be able to do so via the pulldown menu under the Friends tab in Quick Menu. You can also see who’s currently online.

Whenever you’re listening to music on PS4, you’ll be able to access certain shortcuts from the Quick Menu. If you’re using Spotify on PlayStation Music, the ‘square’ button will serve as the shortcut for volume control. And when you’re on the Media Player or the USB Music Player, ‘triangle’ will work as the shortcut for play or pause, and the ‘square’ button as the volume control.

Background Music on PS Now

With Background Music on PlayStation Now, you’ll be able to listen to your favorite tracks while streaming a game on PS Now. Just keep in mind that, similar to when playing a game locally on PS4, background music may not always be available.

Notifications Update

This update will give you the ability to delete old notifications for better organization and management. Just go to Notifications and press the ‘triangle’ or ‘Options’ button to open up a menu that will allow you to select a single or multiple notifications you’d like to delete.

Import Custom Wallpapers via USB

Love customizing your PS4 Home Screen? Well, this new update will give you even more options. You can import your own images to PS4 from a USB stick and set it as your wallpaper. You can also zoom and crop your images so they look perfect on your dashboard. Just go to Settings > Themes > Select Theme > Custom > Select Image > USB Storage Device.

Customize Tournaments Team Pages

Following the 5.50 update, you’ll be able to customize your Tournaments team page with your own team logo or background that you can import from a USB stick. Represent your team by customizing your team page with something unique and original! To set your logo and background, head over to Events > Teams > select your team > Edit Team Profile.

Supersampling Mode on PS4 Pro

PS4 Pro users will see a new ‘supersampling mode’ under Settings, which enables those with HDTVs (i.e., 1080p or less) to enjoy an enhanced visual experience when playing some PS4 games. With supersampling mode, games that render to a higher resolution when connected to a 4K TV will downscale to match the HDTV – allowing PS4 Pro owners to leverage the benefits of an image clarity boost even if they don’t own a 4K TV. Certain games already have ‘supersampling’ benefits as part of their ‘PS4 Pro Enhanced’ feature set, but this new mode can enhance the experience for those games that don’t already have the feature. Because PS4 Pro’s added power and modes benefit different games in different ways, please note that certain games’ image clarity may not improve with this new feature.
There are pictures in the post itself if you want to see examples of some of these features in action.

But a lot of the organization stuff sounds good, like hiding things within your Library.
