I haven't played a Zelda game since Wind Waker. Used to love them, but Wind Waker effectively killed the series for me. That and Nintendo's miserablely faulty console hardware.  Tried to start Minish Cap long ago, but didn't get very far before losing interest. It's too bad, it used to be one of my favorite series.

These are the nominees for Game of the Year. I've only played God of War.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey
Celeste
God of War
Marvel's Spider-Man
Monster Hunter: World
Red Dead Redemption 2
Hopefully Spider-Man wins because that's my GOTY as of now. It has the best mix of story and gameplay to me. Haven't played Celeste and RDR 2 didn't hold my interest for long but the other 3 are in my top 5 for this year which are...

1. Spider-Man

2. AC: Odyssey

3. Dead Cells

4. God of War

5. Monster Hunter World

Darksiders 3 would have made top 5 if not for the technical issues.

Red Dead is easily winning tonight. As much as I want GOW to win (HUGE fan of the series), Red Dead is a whole different beast. Both are gaming at its finest. If GOW is an A+, Red Dead is an A++.

That and Nintendo's miserablely faulty console hardware.
Huh? Nintendo has consistently had the most reliable hardware in the business. I have no doubt you might have experienced some back luck but overall, Nintendo is known for excellent hardware reliability and customer service.

My Gamecube, aside from freezing during those slow loading-from-disc moments, had the habit of dropping polygons and objects from games. I remember my brother wanting to show me something in Super Monkeyball once. He popped it in my GCN and either the ball, or the monkey, or something else would simply not load into the game no matter how many times he tried, causing the game to glitch out. He took the disc out, put it in his GCN, and no problem at all.

My Wii currently doesn't work at all. The system starts up with the disc drive sounding like it's grinding on something and the screen displays nothing but green (and occasionally pink) lines. So much you can't even see the channels in the background.

The 3DS says otherwise, as it's such a poorly made handheld that scratches its own screen and the buttons wear down easily by just playing games consistently. I'm on my fourth 3DS at this point.

Astro Bot should be up for GOTY, not just in the VR category. I haven't played the newest Assassin's Creed, but it is hard to believe that it would be better than Astro Bot.
Astro Bot really is amazing. Sadly the VR only title just doesn't get enough exposure.

Don't underestimate Assassin's Creed Odyssey, it truly deserves to be in the GOTY category. It also deserves to be in best Voice Actor category as well for Kassandra.

granted that doesn't apply to all models but yeah. My l and r triggers no longer work on my launch 3ds. 2ds is still going like a champ. too bad it doesn't fold and is not comfy to use for long periods. also only one speaker and it is about where you would rest your thumb. music quality in stuff like ff theaterhythym drops drastically unless you play with headphones.

I want to get the 2ds slim or xl at some point. Oh and one tiny complaint for the og 3ds is that it struggles to run pokemon sun and moon and crashes if you exit out the game. Don't know if that was a common issue for all models but it is disappointing that it has issues.

Ok, what? DSLite had hinge and touch screen issues. Wii had drives that could barely read dual layer DVDs, which people didn't find out til Smash and The Last Story came out. Switch had joycon communication and USB-C issues.

I had multiple DSLite hinges crack. My Wii has the shit DVD drive. And my joycon has shit reception.

It affected like all launch 3DSes. What other company had issues like that on all launch models? You can't say they got better after fixing it in future revisions and just ignore the original release.

Okay, in case anyone cares, my physical copy of the Quantic Dream Collection arrived today and I can confirm that all games are physical.  It is a double-size box that houses two game cases.  One case has a disc for Detroit: Become Human.  The other case has two discs, one each for Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls.  Heavy rain is on one of those swinging things in the middle of the case and Beyond: Two Souls is where discs normally are in cases.

Doing a test stream to see how my new internet handles this, so feel free to hop in for a bit to let me know how it looks while I play a bit of a special game:

https://www.twitch.tv/lordcrashington

Damn, only the first episode is on sale. How rude.

The question is should I buy it now (since I really want to play it) and wait for a possible sale on the rest of the season? Although they will probably put the complete season on sale and not the season pass (as usual) and I'll be screwed.

Life is so hard.
They will also likely release the entire thing on disc after the season wraps, like they did with the other two games.

Ultimate Alliance 3 a Switch exclusive? What a disappointment. I'm hyped about Outer Worlds though.

These are the nominees for Game of the Year. I've only played God of War.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey
Celeste
God of War
Marvel's Spider-Man
Monster Hunter: World
Red Dead Redemption 2
Anyone know the lowdown on Celeste? I haven't even heard of it.

Excited for the new far cry. Some of the others look good too.

Also... assassins creed is good again?

Not to drag out that discussion any further but all I said was that not all 3ds models have the screen scratching issue.  Not that it excuses it just that it isn't a problem that plagues all of them.

Has-been heroes mini review

Total hidden GEM!

What a wildly interesting, unique, difficult, wonderful game.

I dont even know where to start. You navigate rooms sort of like binding of Isaac, where each room can be combat, or a shop, or something else. As you play games, you unlock more... more enemies, bigger dungeons, different rooms, new items, spells, characters. Your first game will be like 5 rooms.... But eventually you'll be playing huge games. There is a ton of content.

Combat is where this shines. You select 3 heroes, each with different starting loadouts. There are three lanes, and you need to manage enemies marching towards you plants vs zombies style.

This is truly impossible to explain, but basically it's like a super intense combat management game. Enemies can block hits X times, but if you can get them to exactly 0 blocks, you stun them and can knock a block off. So for example, if an enemy has 5 blocks, you might hit them 3 times with your rogue, then twice with your mage to stun them, then your fighter hits for big damage and knocks them to the back of their lane and now they only have 4 blocks. Multiply this by hordes of enemies along 3 lanes, up to 5 spells per character each with timers, and every game quite different due to finding different spells and items, and you end up with a fantastic game.

Highly recommended. If you like Tactical games, roguelikes, puzzle games, xcetera you should check it out.

Congrats to God of War. The only nominee I did play this year.

I'm psyched about The Stanley Parable. Always wanted to play it, was holding out for a possible console port.

UFC 3 any good? Haven't played a UFC game since that shitty UFC Sudden Impact game on PS2. I have to assume those games have improved in the last 14 years since that awful game. I'm only interested in the career mode if that helps anyone to sway me.

Not really sure what I want to get into since I'm done with RDR2 and recently finished Spiderman, but punching people in the face sounds like a fun time even if it's not my usual type of game. I just don't want it to be one of those games I turn on and play a time or two and regret buying it later. Opinions?

Also, super happy God of War got GOTY at The Game Awards. Very well deserved. I have to admit I'm a tiny bit disappointed there was still no Borderlands 3 reveal. Ah well.

What a fun show, Keighley has really refined this show into something to look forward to.  A far cry from the very first one which was only a short 4 years ago.  I actually enjoyed this show and what was announced more than E3 this year.  I can't think of a game announcement today that I don't have at least a little interest in.  I think Sony not having PSX really helped too, because you didn't sit through the show thinking about what announcements may have been held back for their show.  Congrats to God of War, well deserved.

I recently got a PS4 after never owning a previous Playstation. I have played and beaten Spider-Man, The Last of Us Remastered, and Journey.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what to tackle next? I'm interested in Uncharted but maybe I should take a break from Naughty Dog.

I own:

Uncharted Collection
Uncharted 4

Horizon: Zero Dawn Complete

Until Dawn

Ratchet and Clank

God of War III Remastered (never played 1 or 2)

Hotline Miami Collection

I also expect to buy RDR2 somewhat soon.

I'd play H:ZD next. Based on your list, I'd further recommend: God of War (2018), Uncharted: Lost Legacy, Bloodborne, and also give Persona 5 a try

R&C or Hotline Miami would be good to dive into if you're looking to change the pace from what you've played already.

Until Dawn is fairly short, but a good ride as well though it can be a little slow since it's a narrative driven game and also a good change of pace.

If you don't care about changing it up, definitely go with Horizon. That is a GOTY level masterpiece last year and a must play.

Thank you for this post. I likely wouldn’t have heard about this game and it sounds different and interesting. Will definitely look into it.

I was looking to pick up What Remains of Edith Finch for my new PS4 Pro, but I'm curious about performance. I was going to buy on Xbox One X, but I've read the port is just as bad as the PS4 version. Have the issues on PS4 been cleaned up with a patch? The only info I can find is that the One X version has zero load times, so I can wait for a sale if that's the version to go for. Thanks!

I played Edith Finch back in March (on my battle-worn PS4 Slim) and I don't recall having any technical problems with it. It's not what one would call a very graphically intensive game. It might have just been issues at launch.

I played through it at launch on PS4 and had no technical issues. Fantastic game.

Weird. I keep seeing things about pop in and framerate problems, but only a few seem to have complained about it. I guess I'll buy it and see what happens. Thanks, again.

I want to pkay god of war. But I've seriously started and never finished the first one at least five times, I always really enjoy it but burn out around the same area. I own all of them so I sort of want to play through in order, but I I know I'll probably burn out at exactly the same place in the first one. I could just skip to the new one, I guess, I love with mythology so I should be very interested in the backstory.

My opinion is the story of the original is poop. The opening scene is really great and the rest of the game didn't live up to it.
