Anyone know how long the Patapon bundle will last? I want to buy it as a gift for my friend since he won't buy it himself.

Also, there's no gifting for PSN, is there?
I don't think it's a limited time bundle, so you should be able to get it whenever.
OR...had you not bought it until you knew you actually were going to play it, you just could have bought the complete edition for 360 for $14.99 without having troubled yourself with the PS3 version. It's not so much about opening games early as it is about not buying them unless you're going to play them.

Not to mention that if you open a game when you get it, at least you're within the return period if the disc won't play, the wrong disc is in the box, something's missing, etc. Your Black Friday deal is an obvious exception, but those exceptions are few and far between and generally games drop in price as time passes, so why not wait until you're ready to play them to buy them?
It's the thrill and victory of the hunt. I got Arkham City for $10 when it was going for $40. I haven't played it yet, but it is now around $10. But hey, I got an incredible deal at the time. I can tell you this same story for about 20 other games in my backlog.

Yes, my life is very sad...
I don't think it's a limited time bundle, so you should be able to get it whenever.
Sadly Frisky, I wish you were right, but the description says: "Pick up this limited time bundle that includes Patapon, Patapon 2, and Patapon 3 for a discounted price!"

I'll just do it sooner rather than later.
It's sad that we have to keep up with DLC expiration dates. I see no logical reason for them to expire unless they are completely removing DLC from PSN or XBLA to re-download, etc. (even that isn't a valid reason in my opinion).

Also, the PSN web store still has the banner ad up this morning for the $10 back and it clearly says "through 4/1/2013" so they will have a hard time not honoring it for purchases today.
I always thought Sony did it over the 12 character / digit code entry. Obviously Sony has less combinations than Xbox's 25 character / digit codes, so they retire old numbers to be repurposed for a new thing down the road. When you think of promos, psn cards, plus cards, preorder, online pass, pack in, etc codes, you have to assume Sony would run out of them at some point, unless they bring back old codes.

I guess you answered your own question then.

Great work with the thread FT! I appreciate your dedication, as this thread has proven super useful to me.

Hm, I wonder if this is the case. The only issue I can see with them reusing codes, is the extremely rare possibility that the wrong person ends up using it.

Say person A has a code that he thinks is for an R&C avatar. Well, that code is expired, and Sony has already dumped it into their reuse bin. So person B goes out and buys a $20 PSN card, and he doesn't realize it (because there's no way for him to ever know) that the code he has on the card was an expired code that used to be for an avatar.

Well before person B can get home, person A decides "Hey you know what...this code is expired, but I'm going to try it anyway!" and he punches it in, with it telling him he's about to add $20 to his wallet. Since that's a lot better than an avatar, he goes ahead and redeems it. Now person B can't redeem his code and is essentially screwed out of $20.

I realize the odds of this happening are astronomical, but I wonder if it ever could. And if Sony knows it could, is that enough to prevent them from reusing codes? Does any smart math person know how many possible combinations you can get from an alphanumeric string of 36 characters? I just assume it'd be in at least the 100s of millions.
Quick question. I just subscribed to PSN plus two weeks ago, and I love it thus far. However, I wanted to know how often new games are rotated in for the free games, and how many at a time? I assumed it was every month, but I haven't heard anything about new releases for April yet.
generally, we see:

week 1: big PS3 game
week 2: psn game
week 3: psn game and vita game
week 4: vita game

though that's not the law or anything. pre-vita there used to be a bit more ps1 and avatars thrown in, but people didn't seem to appreciate either all that much (as a whole) so they've moved away from that a bit to concentrate on games.

also worth noting, since you're new -- as long as you get a game on your dl list, it's yours as long as you have ps+. so even if a game is being rotated out, that doesn't mean you can't play it anymore, it just means you need to have it on your ps3 or in your download list (to dl at a later date) before they remove it from ps+.
Considering that Xbox Live (Microsoft) has never expired a DLC code or voucher that I've known of, even ones that are many years old, I'd say there is no reason for Sony to do it except Sony (they run the system) is doing it in hopes of screwing people who obtain games later (whether new or used) and hoping they will pay for the DLC they got screwed out of by unnecessary expiration dates. A couple of my non-working codes had no expiration dates, yet they chose to expire those and take away features of the game I should've gotten. It's almost like Sony is telling me: "we do it because we can... what are you going to do about it?"
First off, after some research, you're wrong about the 360. There are definitely reports of codes with expiration dates expiring. I've found reports on them for ODST, Mass Effect 2, and MMA, at the very least.

And second, i know you're upset about it right now because you just spent a lot of your weekend working on it, but again, you're misplacing the blame.

From an article on the EA online pass expiration:
"[UPDATE] A Sony spokesperson told Shacknews: "The system doesn't flush out older codes...any code with an expiration date is defined by the publisher.""

Sony didn't publish most of the games in your list -- be mad at the publishers, if anyone, but blaming Sony is a bit silly. Specifically, calling out Sony and saying they're intentionally trying to 'screw us' is just hyperbole. Now, I know big corporations regularly 'screw us' on a regular basis (and let us not forget the Sony root kit, so they're not innocent), but here the blame lies with EA and others.

The problem with your example is that it would be roughly 0% chance of happening. All newer / current cash codes require the register to make the code valid (you can steal one and it won't work) and they rarely go on sale, so you figure the code will probably be used within a week (if they're anything like me, at most 2 hours...), which would make the story pretty amazing if you could prove it.

I also think it could happen, though we don't know how Sony cycles codes (or even if they've done it yet). They will probably keep going down first time codes till they run out, then continue to cycle older expired or already used codes. In any case, the X attempts or whatever to enter a code would prevent anyone from constantly trying their collection of codes every day. I assume if you kept trying Sony would just ban you and that would probably be the end of it.

i googled 'online permutation calculator' and found one (this is the age we live in).

as long as i got my settings right, it's

4,738,381,338,321,616,896

So... no, Sony will never need to reuse a code (at least, not for many lifetimes). significantly more than just 100s of millions. which makes sense, they're not going to create a code system in this day and age that will run out easily, i mean, there's just no reason to.

The settings i used:
Types to choose from? 36 (a-z, 0-9 = 36)
Number Chosen? 12 (length is 12 alpha-numeric characters)
Is Order important? Yes (you need to enter it left to right in order)
Is Repetition allowed? Yes (definitely have seen chars repeated)

Thanks for bringing some logic to this reused code nonsense.

some more geeking out:

number of possible codes divided by estimated world population (google result):
4,738,381,338,321,616,896 / 6,973,738,433 =

679,460,720

So... it's hundreds of millions of codes per person alive today. So, yea, they're good. For a very, very, very long time.

Yeah I had said that it would likely never happen. I think you'd be more likely to get struck by lightning multiple times.

That number is insanely high. Though I don't doubt its accuracy. Seems like we'll never see codes being used more than once if that's the case.

Not sure i will believe anything the blog posts today lol...unless they offer us dead space 2. Then ill know they are serious and back to same old same old lame retail game offerings

They don't post April Fool's Day stories on the PS Blog. The closest was the announcement of Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier on April 1.
Was that a jab at the last frontier?...it was kind of a joke of a jak and daxter game.
No, it's the irony of a legitimate game announcement on the one day that people tend to not believe anything.

Does anyone have any opinions on getting Phantom Brave: The Hermuda Triangle and FINAL FANTASY TACTICS: THE WAR OF THE LIONS rather than snagging Disgaea 2 for the vita?

I've already got both Disgaea 1 and 3 so it would round out the collection, but I'm thinking a bit of variety would be nice. Haven't really heard much about any of these though. >.>

I am late making this recommendation since the $10 back promo is over, but that Wheel of Fortune game that is apart of the THQ sale is pretty awesome and is a good buy for $15. I was hesitant because there seems to be almost no reviews out, but it is everything you would want from such a game. They have little mini-games that occur between rounds that are fun, the likeness/voices of people from the show, and a good chunk of stuff to unlock. Plus a platinum trophy that looks like it would be pretty easy to get.

$101.93
got dead space 2 dlc bundle. DS3 dlc expansion, assassins creed 3 and darksiders 2 season pass, far cry 3 dlc and dead space ignition. guess for the $20 i'll just get crysis 2 or Mass effect 2 and 3 DLC

Phantom Brave is made by the same people as Disgaea, so you're replacing your rice krispies with coco rice krispies. However, the game is pretty different than Disgaea. Conceptually they're exactly the same, but there isn't as much depth, plus the story is a LOT more serious than anything in Disgaea. The combat is practically the same, except you can move anywhere in a 360 area (unlike the boxes in Disgaea) and you can literally throw enemies out of the arena to deal with them. There isn't a lot of post game stuff (at least in the vanilla game) and the special characters aren't that great. You can easily get 100 hours out of it, but I thought Disgaea 2 was a far better game.

FF Tactics is a lot closer to Disgaea in terms of gameplay, but I always felt like Disgaea improved on the original ideas. Thats not to say it's a bad game, just that I think Disgaea does the tactical RPG better.

Thanks for the great summary. To be honest they all sound great. ^_^ I'll have to think on it a few, but I think Disgaea is the winner with the other two to be picked up at a later date.
Yeah I had said that it would likely never happen. I think you'd be more likely to get struck by lightning multiple times.

That number is insanely high. Though I don't doubt its accuracy. Seems like we'll never see codes being used more than once if that's the case.
It's definitely accurate. Like thefurrypanda said, you just need to do 36 to the 12th power. Not that it really matters, but the only thing that will bring that number down a little bit is that fact that certain letters/numbers aren't used because they look similar. My guess is that the letters "O" and "I" probably aren't used because of their resemblance to the numbers "0" and "1".

I'm excited to see what we get for PS+. I just got back from a meeting and lunch, I thought it would be up by now. Oh well, soon hopefully!
Not over yet! Ends at Midnight tonight, PST. So get those last minute purchases in if needed.

it's updating right now. i went to refresh the blog and saw the giant Plus symbol flash but the podcast story loaded over it.

It's not. You're just seeing the PS+ banner for what's shown under the PS+ tab on that rotator when the page loads. There's no "updating" for the blog. The article is either up or it's not.
No offense, but how many people work there? They KNOW which games are going to be free, how hard is it to copy and paste some paragraphs about it?
I hear they are waiting as long as possible to build excitement for an awesome announcement of Walking Dead Survival Instinct as the big retail game this month. It's a new release so that should make everyone happy.

Maybe they're waiting because an announcement is supposed to be made about something that relates to the updates for this month. Maybe something like the announcement above?
It hasn't been posted yet.
I just meant in general. You post it too, don't you?

Yeah, when we know what's coming down. The only thing we know right now is that Spec Ops: The Line is coming down for tomorrow's update.

I know this was meant as a joke but I'd be okay with this, yes the game is terrible but I would gladly play it for free since I am huge fan of the tv series

Agreed. Problem is I buy a lot if retail games so by the time ps+ offers them for free I usually bought it and beat it and traded it in months ago

You can't possibly have beaten all of them, I mean Spec Ops, Darksiders, Vanquish etc. you beat them all by the time it arrived on PS+?
Did they announce the EU PSN+ games? That's usually enough to get everyone riled up.
that already happened.
