Can't believe they pulled it. Thats a really big slap in the face to those who got bricked over a mandatory update
You wanted them to leave it up so that more people could have problems with it? The fair thing to do is to brick more people's PS3s?

Also, SLAP IN THE FACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My favorite phrase in this thread!

No, I more or less mean why put something up in the first place without testing it. Especially for something mandatory to even log in

I'm not bricked lol.

Just saying its pretty screwed up when people are getting bricked over something that wasn't even needed, and it gets pulled barely a few hours later.

Am I missing something with this mandatory to log in thing?  I turned the system on in the beginning of the mass panic, it told me there was an update available in the corner and then went along it's merry way like normal.

80 gig fat (with upgraded HD) updated no with no problems.

Playing DnD Shadows of Mystara now and loving the nostalgia

Wow, this is lovely. I haven't turned on my ps3 all week, and now I find out that I possibly could be bricked due to auto-update? Now I don't even want to turn on the ps3 to find out... ugh.

Again, call me crazy but if you're manually turning it on then it shouldn't be forcibly auto updating. Shouldn't the only time the auto update comes into play is if it's still active and the time rolls around to whenever you have it set to turn on and check? I haven't had any updates just hijack my system by turning it on. Worst case scenario unplug it from the network first.

Yup, the world could use some more face-slapping: http://youtu.be/IhJQp-q1Y1s :bouncy:

Considering the entire point of auto-update is that the system turns itself on at the specified time, I do think you're crazy. Although in retrospect, I'm not sure I enabled the update feature (I set it to auto upload saves and sync trophy info, though I forget the rest of the options). I guess I'll find out later.

Right, but I have my system set to do the PS+ auto update at 10AM. So right now it's 2AM, just because I turn the system on doesn't mean it's going to trigger that process and that auto update only happens if the system is in idle or standby or whatever it's called when it has the red light and is "off". If you're using it the system's supposed to bypass that process anyway and try again the next day. Maybe I'm misunderstanding the repeated concern over it seizing control of the system, especially since it did no such thing with mine, though I still disabled it just to be on the safe side.

Wait, what? Mine's set at 6AM, which means that if I had it enabled, then this morning at 6AM while I was asleep, it turned itself on and updated, then turned off. Which means that if I turn it on now, it's too late and the update has already happened.

I don't think they pushed that update out until 6 hours ago give or take so you should still be fine. I do see what people mean about needing it for certain features now, won't download the stuff that was queued up by the web store and giving the needs to update error. Everything else is fine and dandy though.

Edit- Never mind, the downloads kicked in fine a minute later.

It doesn't actually install the firmware update, just download it. There would be no danger unless you installed it yourself.

So is there a way for me to reverse the 4.45 update now that it has been reverted to 4.41 again? Or do I just need to wait for a patch? Option 3 says mine is correupted (not sure if it's telling others that...)

Welp, I am scared to update since I have a 1TB HDD. Going into y2k mode and going offline for my ps3.

They pulled 4.45, those who updated to it and are bricked are stuck. But it's been removed and 4.41 is running.
Ah, that is reassuring. Thanks for the info.

My auto update didn't pick up on the firmware at 4AM EST last night and tonight it's been pulled so no updating for me.

That's really crappy for everyone that had their systems bricked because of this, hopefully there will be a solution to that soon and if not a suitable compensation to make up for their major screw up.

I updated last night worked fine, knock on wood. ac3 500gb super slimer. The question now can it brick it randomly... man sony scare more people to get xbox one... ack ms with drm...

My ps3 could explode and create a crater in my back room and I wouldn't be scared into doing that haha.

But let's leave the other console out of this shall we? :)

I feel like everybody using the word "brick" is kind of overly dramatic. They didn't give you an update that caused your system to yellow light and no longer work. They gave you an update that may cause you to have to reformat your HDD and then redownload your stuff. Is that a major pain in the ass? Absolutely, and you should rightfully be a bit upset, but at the end of the day my guess is that your system will be useable and Sony will likely throw you a bone of some sort. I know not everybody can afford to have multiple systems, but if you are on a site like CAG you likely have a pretty hefty backlog and your inability to access one system might just give you a reason to go take care of some backlog stuff on another.

To be honest, I haven't used my PS3 in about a week and wasn't going to use it tonight. However, as someone who had the last FW update force me to reformat my 1TB drive, I'm really glad that the outrage was there if only from an awareness perspective.

I was able to turn off my auto-update session, but almost more importantly, the buzz got Sony to pull back the update. This is important to me because even though the auto-update doesn't install the update, all it takes is someone else in my house doing me a "favor" and I'd end up with a lengthy night of restoring ahead of me. As well as the inability to watch blurays, Netflix, etc. Mild inconvenience the first time, perhaps, but multiple times starts to negatively impact the brand for me.

Updated last night and played for about 4 hours with no issue.

Wife just called and said the PS3 wouldn't come on. She shut it off pulled out the power and turned everything back on and its working for now. I wasn't there so I don't know if it had the yellow light or anything.

The interesting thing to note here (at least what I've heard) is that the bulk if not all the reports are from people who have swapped out hard drives for larger sizes. I've always thought that it was pretty cool that Sony allows for that and even accommodates it (and will apparently continue to do so with PS4), but I suppose that's the downside of having that tiny bit of hardware freedom is that internal QA can't cover all possible replaced hard drive configurations.

The only know fix right now is for you to try and put back the original hard drive if you still have it. But even so that would still have erased all of your game saves.

This is one of the reasons why I don't use auto-update, even though I'm a Plus member. And I never, ever install a firmware update right a way without waiting for at least half a day. I feel bad for all of those who's systems are unplayable right now. But Sony is looking into fixing it. Hopefully, your saves will still be there when the fix comes out, and everything is back to normal.

That last bit was my take on it. I didn't know it was just causing reformats, I thought it was literally killing systems like the info that was circulating last night said. Ended up going back to my PC to start some new games.

On another note, earlier yesterday afternoon I finally recieved my rented copy of the Journey Collectors edition. Only played the first two levels of Flower but I have to add these to my collection now. You guys know if any pricing infomation has been release about the Flower port to Vita? Or if/when fl0w and Journey are coming to Vita? I'll probably pick up the first two on psn from this sale but I'd prefer to play on vita if it controls well.

Oh my, praise the Sony lord above! I really hope it gives the option to toggle those notifications. I understand that some of you like them, but it completely breaks the immersion for me. Anyone who's played The Last of Us will know exactly what I'm talking about.
Serious question: what trophies did you pop in your first playthrough that ruined your immersion? The only one I imagine would come naturally is the one for crafting all items.

Please Spoiler your answer to this, unless it is a super generic answer.

lol seriously! I'm only halfway through the game right now but after that one popped I got to thinking "was that my first trophy?!" After looking at the trophy list, yep and probably my last until I beat the game. Or at least close to it. That being said, I did turn off notifications after the update. :p

I would assume the 144 collectibles but their pop rate is spotty and a guide is needed anyway to have a good shot at them all 1st time through. It was a weird list of trophies in my opinion because even as great as the game is multiple playthroughs can be taxing (24% through 2nd) and some are just random be here at this moment type stuff.

We have yet to receive Batman: Arkham City, Catherine, and Hitman Absolution.  But those should be coming soon, so I wouldn't be surprised to see them in July or August.

I got lucky last night, I saw the update was causing issues before I started playing last night. I got my copy of The Last Of Us from Amazon yesterday so I was glad I knew not to update :) Played about an hour of TLOS, so atmospheric loving it so far.

Hey Frisky, just wanted to let you know that the free Alice link in the OP doesn't seem to work.  Thanks for all or your hard work in updating these deals every week!

Entering PS Plus in July:EU

  • 3rd July: Battlefield 3
  • 3rd July: Payday: The Heist
  • 3rd July: Saints Row the Third
  • 3rd July: Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus
  • 3rd July: Unit 13
http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2013/06/19/playstation-plus-your-july-update/
I'm not jealous either (Battlefield 3? Yuck!), but man 4 full games and Payday, which probably could have been a full release. Wow.

Also, just realized this, but that is a TON of shooters. Two FPS, one TPS, and Saint's Row which is a Sandbox game with lots of gunplay.

Ya, I am not sure what happened there. They appear to have pulled the free Alice 1 Alice Madness Returns DLC from Xbox live and PSN.

I was able to find it in the web store by searching for "Alice" and then made my free purchase. I just copied the url from the store, pasted it here and then clicked on it but it doesn't work. Strange.

I wish that Giana Sisters game was on Vita, id buy it in a heartbeat. Probably still going to get it anyways, idk what made me like it so much.

Battlefield 3 is one of my favorite shooters of all time.  It's squad based where each of your squadmates serves are a respawing point, and everyone has a different role and specialty within the squad, and can be changed at anytime.  I have a feeling that those who claim the game is bad either didn't play the game or just didn't give it enough time to earn a few weapons (with a few hours of gameplay).

I want Unit 13. Not enough to buy it outright but for plus itd be awesome. Great demo, like shooters on the vita.
I want Unit 13 and I already finished it and sold it off. It's a great great game and very underated. There isn't much in story and it's more mission based but the mechanics are pretty solid and the game is just fun. It's got a few minor issues but overall I loved it. I'd take it for free on PLUS in a heartbeat.

Maybe I could link up with someone to unlock those last few High Value Target levels. That was the only thing I didn't like about the game. All of the Solo missions have star counts and you needed a certain amount to unlock the high value targets, I think the last one you needed to 5 star every level. I finished all of the Solo Missions but probably the first game I wouldn't mind 100%ing in a long time.

It's a great game but not very beginner friendly, especially solo, for new players when most of the people playing are in the hundreds of hours played. I think it's a great game and more than gotten my money out of it and Premium.
