That's like saying you don't play shooters for the shooting.
Why? I love complex turn based combat and upgrade systems. I don't like cutesy overdramatic dialog and plot tropes.

Every once in awhile, there's a gem i care about (like TLOU, even though that's not an rpg), but it's rare.

Every time you say that I twitch.
Sorry, it's just how it is. Paying attention to the plot of most games would make me twitch, lol.

Give me an excellent or interesting combat system like Valkryia Chronicles, Resonance of Fate, Yggdra, Disgaea, or even Ni No Kuni and I'm happy. Heck, i'm even happy with a solid implementation of older ideas, like say Jeanne D'arc. But ake me click through stilted/cheesy dialog about saving the world and I'm not.

Heck, I even love FFXIII because I think it attempted to solve one of the most critical problems with most JRPGS -- combat eventually devolving into 'press x to attack', where you end up doing the same attack over and over. When the 'proper move' is blatantly obvious, it gets boring. FFXIII tried to solve that by allowing the AI to pick the best move... and then integrated us back into it by letting us apply AI paradigms on the fly. It's a brilliant concept. Flawed execution at times, but brilliant concept. And thankfully, the obtuse story didn't bother me because.... I don't play them for their story, lol.

At least you're listing JRPGS that are all strong in that area instead of a bunch whose combat is vanilla and mediocre at best.

Ahh, well I just bought the PSP version. I do enjoy the story aspect part more of the games....I hope I don't regret my purchase :/
Besides the addition of the female playable character, the best thing about P3P is that you can actually control all party members yourself. The PS2 version only let you control the main character, which is annoying.

Weather effects are fucking cool.

But seriously (though it isnt a racing game) I remember the first time I saw the opening cinematic for MGS2. I was floored.
Every time I think of Snake landing on the Tanker I geek out a little on the inside. MGS series has always had some of the best weather effects in games.

I'm interested to know the details of that Terraria bundle.

Maybe tyler would know, but are there any story/dialogue changes to Guacamelee if you change costumes?  I'd say this question mostly applies to the Juanita costume.  I just bought the DLC costumes and I'm gonna need to start a new save file so I was wondering if I can just blow through the story or if I should pay attention.

As RPG added the bundle's a retail thing. I can't believe they're charging $40 for it though, what have they added to justify $30 over the PC version other than a couple "collectibles"?
http://www.gametrailers.com/side-mission/55134/terraria-collectors-edition-discovered-for-ps3-and-xbox-360

The collector's edition includes a USB flash drive, crafting map, and three character posters. The Xbox 360 version comes on a physical copy while the PS3 version is offered only as a digital download via a code.

Hey, anyone wants to pay $30 for a plastic pick axe and some paper be my guest.

Edit- Just noticed the pick is a whopping 2GB.  :headache:

As far as I could tell, there were no changes. I'm pretty sure I was called "Juan" a couple times when I was playing as the blue girl. That being said, I pretty much blew threw the dialogue so I didn't pay too much attention.

As for Terraria, considering it's probably the most enjoyable game I've played in 2 or 3 years, I'm pretty tempted to grab this collectors edition for 360.  Works out well so I'd get the physical copy since I already have the game on PS3 but not 360.

I agree $40 is probably too much but for me it's very tempting.

I purchased Terraria shortly after release and had a great time with it and may doubledip with the Vita version after it comes out and possibly hits a sale unless they give owners of the PS3 version some kind of discount.

I find it pretty lame any time a game has a physical release but the game itself is still a download code, but I guess it's still cool for people into that kind of thing.

Okay, cool, the dialogue is probably the same then.

In P3P, you move around and interact with people/things using a cursor, whereas in the PS2 versions, you move the player character directly. It may seem like a small difference, but I found it harder to become immersed in the game as a cursor hovering over the environment.
Personally I liked being able to quickly get where I could go so I could focus on the story. Persona 3 Portable has the major advantage of a completely new play through with different social links and music. That being said it should have been priced the same as the PS2 version :(

That Terraria bundle is cool. Hopefully I can nab it on sale or after a price drop.

I'm mad at myself for not paying attention to the PLAY promo since I rarely buy digital at launch but all the games look great. I decided not to wait for the XBLA release of DuckTales and get it sooner and cheaper on PSN and with a theme. Smart move, Sony. My friend got me the DT pin that comes with the retail version at E3 so I'm excited. DT was my favorite childhood cartoon along with Gummi Bears.

I also decided to pre-order ibb & obb since it looked awesome and unique and my friend and I will co-op it. For basically $5 more I decided to get Cloudberry Kingdom too since it looked like an insane platformer. I already know I'm going to curse up a storm playing it like Super Meat Boy and even Joe Danger when getting Pro medals. My friend called me masochistic haha.

Needless to say I was very impressed with the game trailers and hope they live up to their concepts/videos. I went in for 1 game and came out with 3. Again, smart promo and marketing, Sony.

as with Tylerh I'm very interested to hear your thoughts once you play Cloudberry. I love platformers but have a lot of skepticism about how that will turn out :whistle2:k

In a few minutes, I'll be livestreaming some Stealth Inc: A Clone in the Dark if anybody here wants to see it in action. I'll also have some direct feed gameplay coming later today.

Yeah I'm hoping that Terraria bundle isn't just a limited supply and they'll be around for a while. I'd definitely grab it for $20.

If you have yet to turn on auto-uploading of saves, this is how to do it:
  • Launch Content Manager App.
  • Click on Online Storage.
  • Click on Vita to Online Storage.
  • Click on "i" button next to game.
  • Click on Upload Automatically Checkbox.
  • Go back to game list and you should see a green arrow pointing up next to the "i" button to confirm that it's set to automatically upload new saves.

Thanks for this! Perhaps dumb question: is there a reason why I might NOT want to upload a game's save automatically? I set everything to auto upload.

Downloaded Metal Slug XX on my PSP Go. If I like it enough, I will also put it on my Vita. Had been wanting to buy Metal Slug Collection but $20 is too much for a PSP game this late in the game.

Maybe you want to try something in a game that you might not want to keep, like resetting progress to try something or taking an alternate path that you may not be able to roll back, so you turn off auto-upload to keep that original save as a back-up.

i asked this a couple pages back but didn't see any responses.   do psp demos still not work on vitas?  really want to try the gladiator begins demo before dropping $10...

To revisit an old topic where I preferred story over challenge on games today versus old, oh my goodness will Bioshock Infinite let go of my hand already? I realize they have the 1999 mode but that doesn't make up for the fact that I'm nearing the end and they still tell me which button to push to find the right direction or to use my vigors in battle. Ridiculous amount of hand holding for a game that has a weak story.
Weak story? The setting and narrative are arguably its strongest suits. I'd agree, though, the game isn't very challenging (although the last battle tends to be where most people have trouble).

Frisky will correct me if I'm wrong but I don't believe so.

Yeah, I haven't gotten to Infinite yet but the vibe on the game is that for as many things as it did right it and good as it is overall that it definitely tries to be all things to all people and that never goes well.

Catherine hasn't been below the 19.xx it was for PS+ ages ago, has it?
It was free on Euro PS+ and many of us are still waiting for it to show up here.

I think that's a fair price for all that. That was my desired price point too.
@MrNinjaSquirrel I'll be sure to send you my impressions of CBK.

I started TLOU this morning and am about 1/3 of the way through. That may have been the most intense opening to a game that I've played.

Yeah, story is usually what's most lauded when it comes to Bioshock Infinite. Anyways, it was definitely the easiest of the 3 Bioshocks, that's for sure. And I'm not sure why the tutorial blurbs kept repeating themselves as well, but it definitely happens a lot.

I know right?! You're at the part where I thought the game hit a little bit of a lull but as good as the game starts it really does finish even better.

Yeah I thought the story was the best part about Infinite actually. I'm in the same boat as Tylerh in thinking it's the worst of the trilogy, but man the story and characters were something else. I'm continually surprised by how varying peoples opinions on it are, but I guess to each his/her own.

Looking forward to them :)

Definitely agree that TLoU has one of the best openings of possibly any game I've played, but not to be upset anyone but I'm really not understanding all the perfect scores. Obviously they aren't meant to imply that a game is perfect, but at what I feel is over half way done there are just so many things that I find extremely annoying and frustrating, and overall it feels like a step back from the Uncharted games. The characterization, presentation, and voice acting are easily among the best of any game I've played to date, but as far as being a great game, I'm still not convinced

I definitely noticed the tutorials coming back after each new game session in Infinite too. A little annoying, but didn't kill the game. The ending is actually the first one I can remember to give me actual goosebumps. I had just finished the first two Bioshock games for the first time right before playing this, so gameplay didn't seem all that different/groundbreaking (except for the obvious thing Elizabeth provides). Definitely one of the better games of the year, though.

I thought you could turn those off? Most modern games do this all the time, and it's really annoying. I understand that it's meant for shorter attention span people who are probably coming back to the game for the first time in a while or something, but damn.

1999 mode is the only way to play Bioshock Infinite.

my only issue with 1999 mode is i get lost too often. battles arent too hard, but i just don't remember where im supposed to go.

that is so rude they took off the deadspace 3 nav button. cmon im so lost. i know i beat it on hard, but that doesn't mean i remember where to go at all...

The characterization, presentation, and voice acting are easily among the best of any game I've played to date, but as far as being a great game, I'm still not convinced
Not really spoilers but I'm going to talk about the flow of the game here.

See, the middle of the game to me is by far the weakest part where I felt like they gave in a little too much to the pressure of having to have these big action set pieces or losing out on the COD crowd. The game is at it's best though when it's allowed to just be there, you and Ellie in the ruins of the world and discovering it through her eyes. While the mechanics of the combat work fine and those big set pieces serve a purpose in the story the combat really exposes some of the limitations such as the brick dumb AI. It's really the story, the voice acting, the world, the overall resonance that make TLoU something that transcends most games. Like I've said many times the middle third was something I largely didn't care for but is book ended by two of the most powerful and empathetic portions of any media I've personally experienced. Just wait until winter rolls around.

Information about the game Rung Rung: Ozu no Mahoutsukai ~Another World~ (a PS1 import on PSN) is scarce, and it's a great game IMO, so I've decided to rip the soundtrack.

I'd highly recommend the game to anyone with an intermediate level of Japanese. It's great as a first step away from furigana-using games.

Anyone know of good psn games for someone at a beginner-ish level of Japanese? At this point I've got the kana down, for the most part, and am working on a bit of vocab.

I'm not writing it off, there are just so many things (the horrible shooting, AI, stealth mechanics, and glitches) that make it hard for me to understand the perfect scores. I do think it is a really really good game, but I find overlooking all of the problems is somewhat overkill. I can get the need not to nitpick a game to death, but I guess others just have different opinions on what is and isn't worth criticizing. So yeah, I don't want to argue TLoU's merits or anything, just needed to say something about my lack of understanding.

Well the shooting does get better. A third of the way in you have a pretty limited selection of guns and until you start upgrading them and get your weapon sway down it isn't that hot. I do think that's intentional though to try and discourage you from just blasting your way through everything since that's not the point of the game after all. I also liked the stealth for the most part but that might just be that most games are so miserable at it and that the listen mode makes knowing where to go a lot easier. I did feel similar to you about those elements though until some of the upgrades starting rolling around and by the end felt that those aspects were handled fairly intentionally.

I definitely agree that there are some issues, and let's not forget the glitchy and sometimes gorgeous/sometimes mediocre graphics, but it's one of those things where the sum of the experience creates something greater than if you had transposed those mechanics into something else. I also went into it not really sure what to expect and unsure from the demo so that might also play into how the game's perceived.

I thought you could turn those off? Most modern games do this all the time, and it's really annoying. I understand that it's meant for shorter attention span people who are probably coming back to the game for the first time in a while or something, but damn.

1999 mode is the only way to play Bioshock Infinite.
Yeah I should have played Infinite at least on Hard, if not 1999. It was rather simple on Normal.

well my problem with the shooting is because of the lack of a real cover system (shooting around corners is virtually impossible). The stealth is fine, braindead AI not considered, but I just hate how they completely ignore any of your NPC companions (for example Elli was standing in a hallway completely nonchalant and an enemy walked directly into her without any sort of recognition). It really breaks the immersion for me, and knowing that this isn't just a glitch but intentional by Naughty Dog doesn't really help. I guess I will have to see if my opinion changes greatly once I've beat it, but so far I'm just a tad disappointed.

I played through Bioshock Infinite four times within the week it was released. Took that week off work, which I don't think I've ever done for a game. Loved every second of it too.
