Do ps1 classics ever go on sale? Specifically some of the old RPGs, the more niche ones?

SNIP

So any hope for a sale on these or should i just bite the bullet and pay $6+ for all of them and $10 for the square ones?
rarely. just buy as you're about to play. unless you have the cash to just drop on all of them w/o blinking.

I'm glad I don't have this level of addiction to trophies or achievements. If I don't want to do the things necessary for a trophy, then I don't do it. If I'm enjoying it enough to do everything, then I'll keep going. They're more of a record of the things I've done than a list of required goals to accomplish.
oddly, i don't actually 'care' about trophies. i've never looked at anyones, and don't know how many i have. i just am a completionist and trophies sink their fangs into me. if i know i 'need' 500 kills with something, it's hard not to grind them. i tend to do the same thing with games like rogue galaxy that have 'hit lists' despite myself.

Totally agree. @Affa is about to hit you over the head with a super academic response as to why you're wrong, though, hahaha.
huh? what's with the hostility, bro?

man, me liking combat systems and game mechanics more than plot reallllly gets to some people, lol.

Thanks. I posted in the thread yesterday and just bought the rest of the SS DLC. I'm debating on Rayman Origins since I love platformers but the demo kind of annoyed me even though I hear such rave reviews about the game.
Demo didn't do much for me either. You gain abilities as the game progresses, and the change of environments adds a lot to the aesthetic over the course of the game. Trust me, for $5, you'll get enough enjoyment out of it even if you don't finish it. I couldn't put it down on Vita, that kind of platformer IMO is ideal for a portable system, but it's excellent on PS3 also.

Hahaha, I was just in my profile settings to change my signature and I'm rated one star.  What loser goes into people's profiles and rates them?

Urrm, that was said in jest. I enjoy your musings despite disagreeing with some of them (loljrpgsforthegameplay). Ever since @admiralvic placed himself in what appears to be indefinite exile, we've lacked a resident philosopher, lol. Speaking of which, it's unfortunate some continue to gang up on the guy and make childish quips at his expense. Internet warriors. :applause:

I'm starting to think I won't be beating Cloudberry Kingdom, well the main story that is.  I'm on level 225 out of 280 and it's starting to become ridiculously (and slightly unfairly hard).  And I don't know about that AI that gears the difficulty towards your ability.  I died about 300 times on a level before I finally beat it, but that didn't make any of the next levels much easier.

I don't really have anything against him, but I have to admit some of his posts can make him come across as a bit of a jerk. But that can be said for most people, so I'd welcome a return of any rational thinkers, if only to counteract slidecage and all the pissing going on lately :fridge:

ah, ok then. i think it's hilarious people play jrpgs for the story, so don't worry, i completely understand. i'll read/watch manga/anime if i want that genre of story. but hey, what do i know... i read rulebooks of card and board games i'll never play for fun.

And I think it's hilarious that people play (most) JRPGs for the combat/mechanics. ;)

Someone has to do it, so I will...

I agree with you about playing JRPGs for the gameplay/mechanics. JRPGs are my favorite genre, and they have been since I was about 12. What drew me in initially-- and what still draws me into most of the games-- were the mechanics, not the stories.

It varies depending on the game, of course-- some games (Xenogears, Earthbound) have relatively weak gameplay but excellent stories, while others have cliched plots but unique gameplay (Persona 3 & 4, Final Fantasy V). Others excel in both (Chrono Cross, Digital Devil Saga). For me, though, the excitement that comes with mastering mechanics and devising strategies tends to be the main draw. Even games with great stories can feel like a chore to play if their mechanics are overly simple or typical.

Trophy lists are the ultimate expression of playing what you like and completionists addiction. We all have stinkers on our game lists, but 100%/platinum'd a game you like is a display of how you like a game or if you mastered it. Sometimes we play games just to play, other times we like and complete the game. I find myself looking at a game and picturing myself investing time in it. We all have backlogs, but I pick a game that compels me to play it until I finish it and move on to the next.

Welllll, to be fair (haha, sound like @affa), the sort of simultaneous co-op we see in Origins, DKCR, Kirby or NSMB wasn't used very often before. Understandably so since platformers require a good amount of precision and timing. Rayman and Donkey Kong get it right, but I think NSMB has terrible co-op that amounts to nothing more than annoying the shit out of your partner. Wii U version might be better, though.
One of the earlier co-op platformers was Contra, and, yes, you can to be careful to keep your partner on the screen (especially vertical stages), otherwise they would die. I loved co-op games like Double Dragon or Golden Axe where two people of completely different skill levels can play together, and you don't kill your partner by going too far ahead.

PSP fighting games. Pay attention dude, that's what this is all about!
That's like the only thing I dislike about PS Plus but none the less I wouldn't call the service itself a stream of piss even in comparison to Europe or Japan. It's well worth the money and bitching about what other countries is silly when you already get way more than what you pay for.

You must be new here.

I think it's time we petition Sony citing this article... so we can, you know, plug up this constant stream of piss we've had to endure.

What stream of piss?

Oh god...the piss flood is starting to rise again! Batten down the hatches boys! Looks like this is gonna be a big one!

Why Sony why! :whee:

Not at all. I know people like to complain about a good thing.
This isn't specific to CAG. It's the whole video game community really.

Oh, who am I kidding. FEED US MOAR SONY.
I believe you have to go back a few dozen pages to follow the story.

This stream of piss thing is an inside joke in this thread that just won't die.

That being said, I don't think 100+ 15 year old PSOne games would plug said stream of piss. My only gripe about PS+ is that they're giving us old PSP games that I'm not interested in. Even older PS One games wouldn't do anything for me.

I feel like Sony is being intentionally difficult on this.

We might need to add a handy reference guide to all the beaten-to-death jokes in the OP so people can keep up. Otherwise it seems like we're all pissing on the newbies and everything that ever existed, ever. If only we could slide out of our cage...

That would be a slap in the face to all the regulars of this thread. :)

I never got around to playing OoE but man it doesn't get much better than Dawn of Sorrow in terms of handheld action games.

Not interested in any PSP games. If I ever was, I would have owned a PSP years ago and bought them, as the PSP has been very affordable for quite a while now.

I just have too many current gen games to play, I'm not interested in going back in time to previous generations anymore. I'm slowly selling off a lot of my previous gen (Gamecube and PS2) games because I've had my fun with them and it's time to move on.

I'm not saying those games don't have a place in the world (I still love a lot of retro games) but there are just too many quality current gen releases that I'm interested in for me to bother looking back anymore.

i'd never really consider Contra, Double Dragon. or Golden Axe to be 'platformers'. DD and GA are early beat em ups, and Contra is... hmm... well, Contra (as in, 'that game reminds me of Contra).

when i think of a 'platformer', i usually think about games where the main mechanic is precision jumping (Mario, Sonic, etc) even R&C (which has some heavy platforming sections when not being a 3rd person shooter).

RE: Japanese PS+

They got Kings Field 1 and 2. We can't even buy Kings Field 1 and 2. Grrr.

I think if I had to pick a favorite one it would be Order of Ecclesia followed closely by Dawn of Sorrow. In my yearly replaying of the series I have already got through the GBA ones and Dawn of Sorrow. So it's Order next followed by Portrait of Ruin.

I would definitely pick up OoE if you ever get the chance.

You dont really want to buy Kings Field 1 do you? I dont know about 2, but I remember playing 1 and even back then it was antiquated and was hard to play due to the controls and grainy graphics. And I was into RPGs back then too.

Contra is usually called a run & gun, no?

In Contra you have to precisely jump from platform to platform to avoid enemy fire. I'd say that makes it at least 83% platformer.

Also, if anyone ever says that the Jak series is on par with Ratchet and Sly, you've lost all credibility and should not be allowed to make life decisions on your own.

Ps1 and ps2 classics don't have trophies

So fuck them.
Seriously, this is one of the reasons I never go back to those games unless they are HD remakes. Not because I am so much a trophy whore. I cant keep up with the serious gamers like gettinmoney and velo and the rest. Serveral people including Frisky touched on it a few pages back. Trophies keep a nice record of the games you played and what you did in them. That and Ps1 games look like shit and Ps2 games arent much better. I will play Vice City again one day...but hopefully we get an HD remake at some point so I wont have to.
