So...how does it compare to Spelunker HD?
Not the same game?

Spelunky on Vita is absolute CRACK. it's the ultimate 'one more time' game - platforming perfection, and i hate most platformers.

basic synopsis - you enter a cave. you need to go down via tunnels, ladders, pathways -- basic platforming stuff. along the way you pick up gold, avoid monsters, find special items (some GREAT), rescue people, find shops, etc. You have 4 hearts to start, but can earn more in various ways. if you do something stupid like jump into a spike pit, you're dead.

the game is fair, but difficult. by this, i mean, you will die. and die a lot. everytime you die, you start over, but the dungeons are always randomized so it plays different. the dungeon creation algorithm is rock solid (pun intended). there are tons of 'special' things to find, and you'll learn new techniques to deal with enemies and obstacles over time. Things that seem insurmountable when you first start will eventually become childs play... but there's always a new, harder level, and there's always you trying for one extra piece of gold that gets you killed.

The game is an absolute gem (pun intended). Highly recommended. Plus, support the indy scene on vita and get us more games! It's cross buy, so make sure to buy the vita version to support the vita (you'll get both anyway).

Dig deep (pun intended) into your pockets for this one.

Tonight's live stream will begin in about 30 minutes and will feature Spelunky, Machinarium (PS3), and Tokyo Jungle, so tune in if you want to see those games in action with a bit of a guide for how to get started for at least the last two games.

Wow...I really suck at spelunky haha. I think it's cause I'm having way too much fun throwing stuff. Cause it keeps hitting a wall and smacking me in the head after. Having a blast though...god there are way too many puns for this game. I didn't even intend for that to be one either.

In Spelunky, are there clues to the insta-death traps? When I first heard about the game, people said there were lots of hidden things that could hurt or kill you and since it was always randomized, I was turned off of the game. However, if there are clues to them that help you avoid it in future playthroughs, then I might give it a shot.

You can throw rocks or whatever you can find to set off arrow traps if you spot them. I haven't played enough to recall what other types of traps there are, but I'm sure you'll recognize the tilesets for them as you play it more.

So if I fucking hated Spelunker HD, will I hate Spelunky. My main issue with HD was the god awful controls. I could put up with the rest of the crap, but quit solely because the controls were so awful.

I can't tell you whether you'll hate it, but this is like asking if you'll hate Sonic 2 because you hated the controls in Super Mario 2. They're different games.

For what it's worth, Spelunky has very tight controls - but I can't guarantee you won't hate them regardless. :p

I totally killed it with my PSN account funds management this week. I had .66 left over from last week. I bought a $20 PSN card. Purchased Spelunky, Dragon Fantasy Book 1 and Limbo. I now have whooping 18 cents remaining.

Spelunky is easily the best platformer this generation.

If you don't own at least one copy of the game by now, you deserve to get Montezuma's revenge.

Tonight's livestream will begin in a little bit with Spelunky, Machinarium, and Tokyo Jungle, so tune in to see those games in action:

um. yes? i mean, the main 'insta-death' trap for the first few levels are the spike traps... which are completely visible and easily avoidable. if you hold down on the left stick to crouch for over a second, you can look below you further (up, too).

nothing is both insta-death and unavoidable, and certainly not 'hidden'. new players like to jump on traps because they're new players and don't understand the mechanics yet. experienced players avoid all those silly deaths. same with any game of this type.

to get past the side arrows, just throw something. a pot, a rock, whatever. or, hold a rat and the rat gets the arrow.

you can run through spike traps, just not land on them. easy peasy. if you don't like the look of a spike trap setup, just use a bomb to make a new path. don't get greedy.

as with all permadeath games, it's basically about greed. remember you don't NEED to get everything. if you are doing well, have great powerups, and see a chest that's dangerous to get to... skip it. just skip it. all deaths are avoidable.

i'm still not understanding this question. different games, different names.

spelunky controls extremely well.

Spelunky and Spelunker HD both take place in caves. That's really the extent to which the two games and playstyles have anything in common.

Haha it's not even the best platformer to come out on PSN in the last 30 days.

Why are people getting so appalled at the comparison to Spelunker?  Oh, really?  They're different games?  No shit, you just blew my mind!  However, they're both platforming games about exploring caves and dying is a major part of the game.

This is like someone asking if they'd like Battlefield 4 if they didn't like Call of Duty 4 and then you guys go, well, I mean, they have different names and they're different games.

Picked up Dragon Fantasy Book 1, Journey (been wanting this for a while almost bought that 3 pack with it in it when it was on sale but it wasn't available at a Gamestop around me) and Spelunky...played the original PC version to death so I'll enjoy it on the PS3 and vita!

Spelunky wouldn't exist if Spelunker didn't come out way back when, as it's a modern evolution of that idea.

Thanks to everybody that checked out the stream. I made sure to record the stream, so I'll post links once I get them uploaded to Youtube some time tomorrow.

Sounds like you need a good ol pint o Guinness buddy. Actually, that would be quite nice right now when I think of it.

Well, I've spelunkied myself to death enough times tonight anyways lol. So off to bed it is.

I wish Spelunky was a tad bit cheaper since the demo was pretty fun.  I just can't throw another $12 into the gaping PSN maw when it's going to be something that just keeps me from playing the games I've already bought.

As a note: If you enjoy Dyad, you should keep an eye out for N++ on PS4/Vita since the main guy behind Dyad, Shawn McGrath, is also one of the three members of Metanet working on N++.

started playing Stealth Inc on the vita today, finished the first couple of stages and so far I like it, the games controls great, the puzzles are ok nothing too challenging from what I played.

I'm not the kind that usually pays much attention to the music in games but stealth inc has a great soundtrack, its what I liked most about the game so far.

this pretty much sums up how I'm feeling towards Spelunky, I can't justify getting it since I just bought a ton of psn/vita games over the last couple weeks, I'll probably just play the games in my backlog and wait for the price to drop.

Played about an hour of Dragon Fantasy, it's pretty enjoyable so far.  Very reminiscent of the original Dragon Warrior to me, which is obviously a good thing.

I know it's a 16 bit style game, but the graphics are really cool and really pop on the Vita screen.  Both the old style and new style graphics are equally awesome, I've been switching back and forth.

I remember one guy in this thread (I think) made a really random gripe about the game where if you start holding up/down/left/right after just finishing a battle or leaving a town, you don't go anywhere and have to press the directional button again.  At the time I thought it was a pretty petty and minor gripe, but I've done it at least 15 times already and it's starting to become a pet peeve in the game.  Obviously not a gamebreaker of any kind, but I've never played a game that does this to me. It's taking some getting used to.

You guys really didn't like Zombie Tycoon II? I just played the first two chapters and thought it was all right.

I got really bored during those first two chapters and had no desire to play it again, especially compared to other stuff I have available to play. Granted I'm not the biggest RTS guy, but I dabble. Just didn't click for me.

Interested in Tokyo Jungle. Feedback? Any other recommendations?
Buy.

Nobody is appalled, but the multiple posts asking the question sound odd. Like if I posted "hey i seriously hate Castle Crashers, will I like Castle Of Illusion?" people would be equally confused (not appalled). It's easy to think the person asking mistakenly thinks they are sequels or something, since one would think if the poster knows the games have nothing to do with each other... they wouldn't ask the question to begin with.

Again, that's not even close. No one is assuming that Spelunkey is a spin off or a sequel. As gettinmoney said, they're platformers about exploring caves. Even Frisky has said Spelunky is an evolution of HD. No one is asking this question based on the name, they're asking it because the games are basically the same genre, with a heavy focus on trial and error being your key to success.

Not trying to do spoilers, but anyone know how to get over the first set of bear traps in Limbo? The little dude keep dying.
been while since i played an beat it, mit be faster watch a let play on you tube of someone playing it till the end, just watch the parts your stuck at.
