:ps4: Foul Play - $2.00 to $100.00 [customspoiler='Fine Print'] :ps4: Foul Play is a part of the PlayStation Heroes program, which means that you can pay your choice among a variety of price points for an item that is usually a theme for entries into a contest to win some prize with most of the money going to a charity. There are no details at the moment for what the prize for buying Foul Play offers, so I'll post that whenever it's announced.

Edit: From the PlayStation Heroes app on PS4, the Foul Play promotion is for a trip to PlayStation Experience in December. Once you purchase the game, you're supposed to go here to register for the actual contest, though you should wait until the page is updated for the PlayStation Experience promotion instead of whatever it's on at the moment.[/customspoiler]

If you look up the description of the PS3 version... it's included.

NO mention of it in the PS4 version.

Other game forums are saying the same thing, it was free for PS+ members for a while.. but that freebie was gone a long time ago.

I've been using this drive in my PS3 slim (originally a 160 gig model) for 3 years strong. I don't think I've experienced any issues to my knowledge.
I too have been contemplating upgrading my PS3 to 1TB from the 250gb drive it came with. I cracked open a red external 1TB Toshiba drive that I have and that was the exact model inside toshiba drive inside. So score! A $0 expense upgrade... once I clean it off. Maybe now I can be a little less stringent about which games I have installed on my PS3. I will have to do the full backup though as I don't want to re-download ~200GB of games.

Somewhat on topic question... I'd like to get Southpark for ps3, but my 500gb harddrive in my slim is full. Can anyone recommend a larger capacity replacement drive? Also how long does it take to setup a new drive? Thanks!
I picked up the Western Digital Blue 1TB 5400 rpm drive a couple of years ago and have had absolutely no problems with it. The set up varies depending on how you do it. If you have a spare external USB drive with close to 500GB free, you can merely backup your drive contents using the backup utility under the system menu. Switching out the physical drives is incredibly fast and easy (thank you, Sony) and should only take a few minutes. (Most of that time is spent removing the old drive from the holding bracket and securing the new drive in its place.) Then you simply reactivate your PS3 and restore your system settings from the drive. [I don't remember if you need to use a thumb drive with the system updates using this method. Can someone help me out there.]

If you don't have a spare drive or not enough room (guilty!) then you need to back up your save files to a back up source via the USB drive or PS+ account (though you probably won't have enough room in cloud storage) and follow the intermediary steps including uploading the system updates from a USB drive (the updates are available from the Playstation website). Then you have to reinstall everything. From experience, this method takes the better part of a weekend and, yes, requires clicking on everything in your download queue.

ETA: There are several YouTube videos that will walk you through the whole process. You should watch a couple of those prior to making the attempt. Then find the one you like best and have it running while you perform the switch.

ETA: There are some people that claim that they received better results with a 7200rpm drive but I remain skeptical as the PS3 can only run it at 5400 anyway. There have also been some overheating issues reported with the 7200 rpm drives when used in a PS3.

ETA: "Better part of a weekend" was the time it took to reinstall everything on a 160 GB drive. I imagine that with a 500GB drive it might take closer to a week. I found it best to turn of the auto shutdown feature, click a bunch of the installs and go to work/sleep. Reinstalling Gran Turismo 5 made me question whether or not to just trade it in to Gamestop instead.

Big FFXI news:
I spent around 8 years with FFXI. Started on PS2 but had to switch to PC when my original fat PS2 stopped reading discs. Hearing that the storyline will be wrapping up almost makes me want to pick it up again. Haven't played since 2010, I know a lot has changed and it's not the same game I remember. I've tried to read up on the new content and it's like reading a foreign language.

Can someone help me figure out what I'm supposed to do here?

I had NFS Rivals retail.   I bought the standard edition in a recent sale.   I thought I had set it up to download.

Anyway ---

In my library, the only NFS entry has a little 'disc' icon on it and if i select start it tells me I need to insert the disc.

If I go to the store and to the NFS profile page and click 'download', it gives me an error message says it's already downloading.

If i go to my download list, the only NFS entries are for an update file (downloaded) and a car dlc (downloaded).

-----

Now, in theory I know what I should probably do - delete the game from my library and hope it lets me redownload from the store.  But is this necessary?  And do I lose my save files (doubtful, but i'm so used to my vita bubbles i just want to make sure).

Thanks!

(total waste of my gaming time today, dammit)

If I'm understanding you correctly, you have to delete the install from the disc and download the digital version.

affa - you have to delete it and redownload from PSN. Happened to me with LBP3 and TLoUR when I went from disc to digital. Stupid that it makes you do that when you already have it installed but that's the only way.

Yes, it's necessary. The PS4 for some reason considers disc and digital installs completely separate thing and only allows you to have one on your system.

Thanks all. I figured as much. I actually don't mind that it's two different versions, but that error message should be rewritten to something more... correct. I'm going to assume the save will remain as it does on ps3.

From what i've read on the XB1 installs.. If you have an internet connection when you toss the disc in.. it downloads the install rather than install from disc. (its why many people have LONG installs to play a rental game.. took 3.5 hours to install Forza horizon 2 before I could play)

The disc in the drive requirement is just something that can be easily "changed" to not needing it once a digital is purchased.

Yeah I wish Sony would have something similar. But its probably easier to just make the user download the digital version, on Sony's end.

If I know i'm buying a digital game to replace my physical copy, as soon as I sell the disc I delete the install. (backup the save first) and then download the game before I go to bed.

A lot of JP users still play XI on PS2.

I played XI for a long time. Kinda sad to see it coming to an end. Even weirder that they are moving it to the mobile gaming space

It's not being moved to mobile. It'll keep going on PC, but there's a spin-off coming for mobile.
There is a spin off as well as they are teaming up with Nexon to bring a form of the game to mobile.

It will keep running. But with no more updates past Nov 2015 the game is as good as dead at that point.

Had this exact issue with DA:I. Thought I could save some install time.

Qube .... as in Intelligent Qube?

Between removing Silent Hill Origins and now South Park, I wonder how these errors come about. I wonder if the Flash Sale button is also one.

Welp, went through, and it looks like the backup had everything(I was worried with their wording involving DRMed content and lack of "here is a list of stuff you can't backup" when backing up)! I think the 1TB drive is 72000RPM, so I will have to see how well it works out.

Restoring the files took just as long as backing the 170GB up(about 4 hours). The only other issue was that I didn't format the HDD prior to installing, and it took a while to find out the 4.70 firmware/system software on my flash drive needed to be stored in "PS3->Update" or something.

Oh yeah, and "Atari" has finally responded about their legal actions with TxK and Jeff Minter:

https://www.facebook.com/atari/posts/10153256381518534

Atari values and protects its intellectual property and expects others to respect its copyrights and trademarks. When Llamasoft launched TxK in early 2014, Atari was surprised and dismayed by the very close similarities between TxK and the Tempest franchise. Atari was not alone in noticing the incredible likeness between the titles. Several major gaming outlets also remarked at the similarity of features and overall appearance of TxK to Tempest; one stated of TxK, “This is essentially Tempest.” There is no lawsuit. Atari has been in continuous contact with the developer since the game launched in hopes that the matter would be resolved.

http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/02/19/txk-review
“This is essentially Tempest, a classic Atari arcade game (technically the spiritual successor of Tempest 2000) and even an updated look can’t obscure its retro roots.” – Scott Butterworth - IGN

http://www.gamespot.com/reviews/txk-review/1900-6415666/
Though it is technically only a sequel to Atari's Tempest in spirit, this Vita shooter sports the same vector-style visuals, the same tube-based gameplay, and even the same yellow player ship as the 1981 original, all refined into a stunning modern interpretation. – Britton Peele - Gamespot

http://www.gamingnexus.com/Article/TxK/Item4332.aspx
Although it doesn't use the name, TxK may as well be the proper sequel to Tempest 2000 (or Tempest 3000, if you are more of a Nuon fan). It doesn't just look and control like Tempest, but it actually uses many of the same power-ups, a few of the level designs and a similar bonus stage. And that's not even taking into account that it uses the same vector-style graphics we've seen employed in all previous Tempest games. TxK is the Tempest sequel I never thought would come out.” – Cyril Lachel- Gaming Nexus
Well, can't say I am surprised, but I don't think this PR bull is going to get "Atari" any sympathy.

I was psyched when I saw that on the "upcoming videos" list because I knew they'd have to see it. Not sure why the ersatz Kurt Angle has a flesh-colored old-timey moustache/goatee, but whatever!

Also you can hear all of their fake themes on soundcloud, which is by far the best part of the game. Props to the guy that made those.

In OTHER news, Ryu Ga Gotoku 0 (Yakuza 0) does the same thing RGG: Ishin did: no streaming/recording allowed in the story mode. That's fuck ed up. Like, gosh, Sega, it's a good thing you won't let people like me try to give exposure to your franchise that you clearly have no interest in advertising, yet claim lack of interest when not bringing them over here.

Plus their botching of the first game, with the awful dubbing/STAR STUDDED VOICE CAST is what killed its momentum to begin with.

How does a game prevent you from recording it? That's some fancy technology if true. I can understand why they'd want to do that. A game like Yakuza is pretty much a TV series so if everyone watched the cutscenes on YouTube, there wouldn't be much incentive to buy the games.

I know when I was playing Akiba's Trip the other day during the cutscenes, a note popped up at the top of the screen saying recording has been blocked. So If you're streaming on Twitch, the screen would go black for everybody else during certain parts of the game. You also wouldn't be able to make game clips in certain parts either. I think that's what he's talking about.

Sony must just expose that part of the platform through an API that developers can use. "Do you want to stop the constant recording feature during your game? Call this method."

I fired up Type 0 last night and was surprised to see it. The message is a little unsettling. When I first saw it, I thought there was a serious issue with my machine for a second.

Yeah, I don't really want to buy a ~$150 capture device when the built-in features are completely adequate, and I already have software for PC games.

EA UFC had some weirdness with that stuff too, during all the FMV scenes it would pop up that notification. Also, when recording fights, it wouldn't record the commentary for some reason. Really bizarre.

It does seem like it's mostly Japanese developers that do that kind of stuff. And sure, I get the story spoilers thing, but c'mon. Blocking EVERYTHING is absurd.

Madden NFL 25 blocked the intro to every single game you played, where they talk about the teams leading up to the coin toss that has nothing special to offer in the grand scheme of things in terms of recording. The one good thing about that is it's a heads up that the loading was done.

I think the issue with disc install vs download install is related to the way in which it's accessing the information. The files on a digital install may be stored differently than they are when installed on the HDD from a disc so it's not just a matter of installing the missing files. (Though I don't really know why it wouldn't be easier for the developer to store the same elements in the same locations on the drive.)

I think you were the minority there. Season one was good, the writers' strike just murdered that show with season 2.
The network murdered that show (Heroes). It was originally pitched as an anthology series like True Detective with maybe a character or two tying in the various seasons but the network stepped in and insisted that they bring back Hiro and the Cheerleader, et al.

It's just kind of a silly thing when XB1 lets your transition from disc to digital seamlessly.
Xbox1, if I understand correctly, was always meant to be 'the same thing'... that was part of the solution of how they were going to lock down physical. For all intents and purposes, physical media simply installed the data on your drive and then your copy became 'digital' in terms of how the system saw it. That is to say, even though you bought the game physically you were effectively going to just be buying a digital copy, much like buying a code in a vita box at a store, except the 'code' was essentially on the disc.

Clearly, there is some different in the files for physical and digital on ps4. There's got to be a reason for it, though it's hard to guess at.

It could have to do with their 'quick install' technique -- games certainly install far faster on ps4 from all accounts in terms of getting to a bootable state. Digital games would need all relevant files first, whereas PS4 could still be reading some files off disc at times during installation. That alone could change enough to make them incompatible if you had to compile them differently.

It would be nice if buying the downloadable copy simply downloaded some sort of patch to 'fix' the physical copy, but that brings up security -- perhaps Sony decided that creating a 'patch' would be too susceptible to exploit if the PS4 security got broken... imagine the chaos if you could put a PS4 disc into a PS4 to get the game, then install a simple patch via custom firmware to unlock it.

Hm... you know, the more i think about it, the more i think my second guess might be it. It would definitely open up a huge avenue of future attack should anyone find a way to exploit the firmware (which is best viewed as 'inevitable' from a security perspective).

And there are prompts suggesting that you could do this, at least when I tried to do this with BF4 shortly after launch.
I didn't get any prompts. When i tried to run NFS it told me to insert the disc. When i tried to download the copy I bought, i got an error message that it was 'already downloading' (it wasn't). Nowhere was i told to delete the existing copy.

Again, this doesn't bother me in the least. it's very minor. i just think they should add some text to the error message along the lines of 'If you have game on your PS4 through installation from a physical disc, please delete that before continuing'.

however, one nice thing was that as soon as i deleted it, the game stayed in my library and made clicking 'download' really easy. it also installed fast.
