Reactivating Xbox Live account on 360

I'm looking to buy an Xbox 360 within the next couple of weeks, as well as getting Xbox Live Gold membership soon after. Is it possible to reactivate an old account on the 360 using an Xbox Live Gold card or kit, or would I have to create a new one? I had an account that I used on the original Xbox, but closed it back on May of 2005. With the 360 though, I want to give online play another try.

your gamertag expires 90 days after you cancel your account. So you'd have to make a new gamertag/account.
