As a matter of fact, in this situation the production commitment is where the serious money becomes a factor. The acquisition of the Xbox version came as part of the same auction item as the PS2 version. So that cost is already covered. Completeing the PS2 version also covers some other expenses for the Xbox version in regard to finalizing details.
Up until that point there has been hardly any cost on the Xbox side. It's all been PS2 with the Xbox version remaing latent. Once they commit to the Xbox version they have several thousand dollars in new costs, depending on how close to complete it was when Acclaim imploded. Those cost could be anywhere from $5K to many times that amount, depending on how much labor is required. Then there are the costs for printing up the Xbox manuals and sleeve insert. Finally, there is the royalty paid to Microsoft for each disc produced.
So yeah, for a little tiny import specialist, it really is a big expense to take a chance on the Xbox version until they feel assured of the game getting a decent reception. It means going from effectively zero to tens of thousands of dollars. Easily past $100K before anything has been sold.
OTOH, if there is found to be a decent market for an Xbox release, that allows much of the cost entirely shouldered by the PS2 version to retroactively shared and make that version more profitable even if the Xbox one only breaks even.
If you've wondered why there aren't more tiny publishers doing this, there you go. Get me $100K in cash and a $million line of credit and one year later you too can be a publisher of budget video games. Or the owner of a fine tax shelter.
Perhaps CheapyD can start scouting potential game properties in Japan and some of us CAGs can create this company. One of you must have the capital lying around. C'mon! Lets do it!
Also, I think that another good reason there wouldn't be an Xbox version is because the Xbox is pretty much dead right now. MS has pulled its support and all it has left is minimal 3rd party support. Many of the big Xbox supporters have moved onto Xbox 360 or are about to later this year. PS2 still has 100% of its life still in it, where Sony hasn't stopped supporting PS2 and it still has large selection of exclusive 3rd party exclusives coming to it. That's why I see XS Games only releasing the PS2 version, which makes sense to me.
