My wifes web site - Nice jewelry good prices.

For hopefully the latestest most current up to date guide drops please refer to the

"CAG Strategy Guide WIKI page"

recent drop section

http://wiki.cheapassgamer.com/index.php/Category:Strategy_Guides_(recent_drops)

master list section

http://wiki.cheapassgamer.com/index.php/Category:Strategy_Guides_(master_lists)

they will be filetered from the thread posts to the WIKI page as often as possible. Thank you for your contribution.

Listed in the wiki is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals from the posts of this thread and similar threads. I will update the wikis lists as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. Please dont have a fit if a store wont let you have them just move on. Causing trouble rarely gets guides and most of the time stops others from getting guides in your area. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

What is a Penny Guide:

To answer this question fully, one first has to understand the longstanding legal agreemenat which [book] publishers have with book sellers such as Borders, Barnes & Noble and other chain and Mom & Pop shops, as well as other retailers who similarly sell their books.

For several decades, publishers such as Simon & Schuster, Penguin, Random House, et cetera will send out X-number of a title to stores to be sold. After a time, when it is decided that those older titles have little chance of selling and the store shelf real-estate would be better used for newer publications, they issue a recall to the vendors to field destroy all remaining copies of titles A, B & C.

The stores then will pull those titles from their inventory to be field-destroyed, and in their systems mark the publications as 1¢. The 1¢ price is to indicate to the publisher that they are no-longer selling the pulled title, and it is also to serve as a Red Flag to any cashier who might ring up a title (on the chance that the titles were not pulled as legally they were required).

When the pull lists are sent out by the publishers, and the stores adjust the price in their inventory (and pull and field-destroy the books), the stores also are to report to the publisher the number of the books they pulled. (This is generally done at a corporate level.) The publisher then credits the stores full cost of the books.

So lets say, MegaChain orders 8000 copies of the Bread Baker strategy guide for their stores in North America for say, $4 a piece. They owe $32,000 to Publisher X. Bread Baker being a big seller and a hard game, then sells 6000 of those 8000 guides, leaving around 2000 guides on the shelves when Publisher X issues the pull demand. Publisher X then issues MegaChain an $8000 credit for the 2000 unsold copies of the guide.

According to IAmTheCheapestGamer, some retailers also have deals where each copy of pulled titles sent to their recognized Recycling Centers are additionally issued further credit for being environmentally responsible in the manner in which they field destroy each book.

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

all guides are now listed in the wiki please go there. thank you.
Add Superman Returns to the list of BB drops.

Saints Row rang up full price, even though I didn't see it on the web site.
Well, add in another one that I need to go track down. @whee.

So how safe is it to assume if a guide is not on the website, then its a penny?
I could just take a list of guides on BB.com, and the one's that aren't listed would be 1 cent.
Also, when the hell will KH2 drop? Its still on the website.

I think it is a good way to narrow the list. But as I mentioned above, Saint's Row was not on the site, but was not pennied out either. This is the first time that a guide not on the site has rang up full price for me.

I picked up 2 xenosaga 3 guides and a FF7: DoC guide from the northcrest BB. I think there was atleast one more FF7 guide and I saw one Enchanted Arms guide still there. I didn't see Tomb Raider Legend. I wouldn't mind trading a xenosaga 3 or FF7: DoC guide for a Star Ocean 3, Radiata Stories, or Grandia 3 guide which I couldn't get from the last EB/GS drop. I kind of wish the Xenosaga 3 guide pennied out a little sooner. I just beat the game and I would have liked to have it in a few tough spots.

DAMNIT! that, and the possible PC guides may make me go out again tomorrow on my way home from campus. Don't really need em, but for a penny...

Did manage to nab the following, with an extra for trade

Xenosaga 3
FFVII Dirge
NBA 07

Any requests for guides, please put them into the "Guide Clearinghouse" thread. Don't litter this thread with "I found X, I want Y" posts.

Darn, I went out searching and saw the Superman guide - but only had Xenosaga 3 and FF :doC on the mind. That was a out of the way BB too.

The Wilkes-Barre, PA Best Buy had a Xenosaga III guide. Not exactly sure how many they had, though.

Guide comes with a large Telos poster, which is a nice touch to any fan who couldn't get the one GameCrazy was giving out at launch time.

I didn't see any of the other guides there.

Can someone check Dead Rising and KH2? Website ordering is temporarily down. If not i plan to check every guide in the store when I go tonight.
Can someone check Dead Rising and KH2? Website ordering is temporarily down. If not i plan to check every guide in the store when I go tonight.
They were both on the web site at full price about 2 hours ago.

Some new PC guides, too:

Star Wars: Empre at War Forces of Corruption Expansion PC
Dark Messiah of M&M PC
Stronghold Legends PC
Neverwinter Nights 2 PC

GTA: Vice City Stories
SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo 2

All tagged 1 cent at my BB.

edit. Here's the receipt for any doubters, since my CAG cred ain't that high. And no, I'm not a hoarder, but my friend here trades guides with fellow CAGs, so she'll probably be adding them to her tradelist.

The BB stores are starting to get really tight about even leaving the guides on the shelf. Two stores I have seen all the guides at had big empty spots where they used to be. I was able to get a few from one store though.

EDIT: Ack, Neverwinter Nights 2 and Dark Messiah? Those were at the store I just left...

Have to add those to my "go find" list for tonight.

SHIT DAMNIT! More guides! If anyone can hook me up with VCS, I'll be stopping again tomorrow, but I doubt I'll find any (don't remember seeing any today)

Oh, and New Super Mario Bros DIDN'T drop, nor did Lego Star Wars 2.

These all are pennied out also????? Also, is the Star Wars EAW the Expansion one or the reg one that's been pennied for a couple months now?

Thats what I thought, until today, when they had them all tagged at 1 cent. I was able to get everything mentioned here today, except for Tomb Raider, but I still got a couple more stores to check, probably tomorrow after the "official" lists have been posted.
Still waiting on the GC list too.

As usual, most were pulled from the stores near me. Two stores basically pulled clean...except for one Xenosaga III they missed in the stack of Warcraft guides. :)

But one actually had the Dirge guides on shelf and marked a penny. And a bunch of Kameo guides too. Grabbed all those.

Best haul of the day was the like 20 of that 10-12 page artbook stuck in a DVD case that BB had for FFXII. Don't know if those are new to being a penny or not, but they used to be $14.99 last time I saw them and now they were a penny.

Its the "Forces of Corruption" Expansion.

I grabbed a couple GTA:VCS. Just check 6669's tradelist if you cant find one, but my store had plenty left.

As for all the other "did x guide drop?" questions, I checked every guide at the store that had changed all the price tags to .01, and the ones listed on the receipt were the only ones I saw that were retagged. I did find some older ones, like Movies, and Half Life, but those weren't retagged, so I'm guess they got all the recent drops.

KH2 was NOT pennied at my BB this morning.
KH2 was NOT pennied at my BB this morning.
Yeah, its still on BB.com. Saints Row is still full price, but not on the site.

Will be heading to my store in about 2 hours. Think they had pretty much all the major guides listed so with any luck i'll snag duplicates.

Hell, I'll just make a list as of right now, since I didnt go to class today

Company of Heroes PC
Dark Messiah Might and Magic PC
Enchanted Arms
Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus
Final Fantasy XII Artbook DVD
Godfather (X360)
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories
NBA Live 07
Neverwinter Nights 2 World Editor Guide PC
Oblivion Elder Scrolls IV for PC & X360 Sku-7748137, ISBN-0761552855
Sid Meier's Railroad PC
SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo 2
Star Wars: Empre at War Forces of Corruption Expansion PC
Stronghold Legends PC
Superman Returns
Tiger Woods 07
Tomb Raider Legend
Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War Dark Crusade PC
Xenosaga Episode III

If I'm missing any, lemme know and I'll add them.

 Thanks kell!
Alphabetized now, to make the wiki add easier to do.

Thanks for putting the list together, Drawingboard. Please add FFVII: Dirge

Shoot, have to go back and check for GTA Vice...

Yeah me too, I saw a GTA Vice there too but had no idea. I did pick up a couple Xeno III's, a couple Superman's and a FFVII.

Thanks for the info, you just saved me a trip to Wilkes Barre from Scranton. Now, to check the Dickson City store and check to see if the manager who lets me grab guides is at the EB by Target tonight.

Since the Saint's Row guide is no longer on BestBuy.com, is that an indication that it will be pennied out any day now? Sorry if that's an obvious question, but I don't fully understand the penny guide process.

Thanks...

It's a sign, yes, though not one you can bet on 100% of the time.

The normal progression for guides to go down to penny status is they end up at $9.99 one month and gone the next.

Right before I was heading out to get King Kong (Xbox) for $10 (minus $5, RZ coupon) I saw this thread...nice! the BB by my house just opened a few months ago, and this is the first price drop for them I believe...they have a gazillion penny guides, but not the one I wanted (Lotta Crotch: Tomb Raider Legend)...I picked up GTA:VCS, even though I don't plan on getting the PSP or the actual game...maybe one day....

If you plan on getting GTA:VCS when it's released on PS2 (very likely since GTA:LCS was) you'll want the guide. There were different guides printed for the PSP and PS2 versions of LCS but they were exactly the same except for the PS2 control layout, IIRC.

Yeah, this is the reason why I grabbed it...I'm hoping it'll come out for the PS2. If not, I'll find a way to get rid of it :D. For a penny it was a no-brainer decision.

This is becoming my new favorite thread. I just wished I checked again before I left. I was able to get FF: DoC, Enchanted Arms and Xenosaga III at my local BB. Now I have to go back tomorrow and get Dark Messiah, SW: EaW: FoC and any other ones I missed.
can anyone tell me if the ffxii art book dvd the one that is a strategy guide in the dvd?
Um, no, there's no guide inside it, I dont think. Its just a DVD case that has the official FFXII logo, and contains an "artbook". I didnt get one yet, but hopefully we'll score one tmrw.

well the only ff12 thing that i can rememeber that was on a dvd was a strategy guide that was inside, not a physical book but a walkthrough about the game inside the dvd, but maybe im just imagining things...

2 more that were pennied that I didn't see mentioned (sorry if I missed it):

GC:

Grand Theft Auto Liberty City Stories (PSP-only version)

BB:

Tycoon City New York (exact title? I don't have it in front of me...)

And I'm pretty sure Narnia and King Kong were mentioned for GC, but too lazy to verify right now.

And TL updated again, click CML.

Picked up Dirge of Cerebus and Xenosaga 2 - the two guides I had hoped to score. They moved the guides again, I thought they were tossed like last round's drop. There are now four sections for guides at my BB - one for XBox 360, another for current-gen, old-gen, and PC.

Neverwinter Nights 2 did NOT scan up at .01 at my local BB(Dickson City). However, it was MIA from the Wilkes-Barre store.

I figured I'd try both for the hell of it.

Dickson City only had 3 Xenosaga III's left, all went with me, after a bit of a hassle too. I got the SAME clerk who called over a manager last month when they had the Prima guide sale and they wouldn't sell me guides for .00.

I snagged 2 of the Star Wars guides and 4 Stronghold Legends from the Wilkes Barre store.

Both stores are now devoid of penny guides.

The XS III guides all seem to have a rippling of the spine at the top of the guides, as if they were crammed in a box that was too tight at one point. The SW guides have damage along the front cover and spine and creasing alone the corners of the guide, along with myriad scratches on the cover(from being crammed in with other guides no doubt). The Stronghold Legends guides were the only pristine/mint ones out of this haul.

All will be available on my TL within 20 minutes.

Ditto. If anyone missed out on any of the recent guide drops, I've added what I could find to my very first post in Game Guide Trading Clearinghouse thread. Being my first post there (yay!), I do believe it will appear on page 7.
