Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread X(Ten)

First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Furthermore, I would like to thank our Wiki editors HeatDolphin and Rocko for updating the Wiki. Great job.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you. Please, whenever possible, use RED font to make the drop info stand out. Thanks again.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinavere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Common Guide Drop Related Questions(FAQ):

FAQ - If you are new (or a vet with a few questions) look here SECOND! (After reading the above!)

Q: What Are Penny Guides?
A: Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them.

Q: Do all guides from all stores drop at the same time?
A: No. While most chains have nationwide drops within their own store (as in every BB will have the same drops coast to coast), not every different chain drops at the same time (what drops at BB is NOT necessarily dropped at GS). When in doubt, check post TWO for drop info.

Q: I found a penny guide and a clerk denied me! I'ma report 'em!
A: Whoa, hold your horses there, pardner! First of all, not a question. Second, just because something is on the shelf, the clerk does NOT have to sell you that item. Most stores are PRIVATE property and as such can deny you just about anything they want - including a sale. The best advice is to not be rude, not be arrogant, and just try hard to get them to have pity on you.

Q: Why don't the clerks want to sell me their penny guides? Aren't they just throwing them away?
A: As stated above, the stores are ordered by the publisher to trash the guides, and are then given credit for those guides. If they don't do this, the publisher won't give them the credit - it's like losing a sale. On the employee level, selling a penny guide can sometimes get them in trouble (or even fired!) I know it seems silly, but this is their job we're talking about! Respect the man (or woman) behind the counter and you'll get a lot more guides than otherwise!

Q: Should I just ask if the store has penny guides then?
A: No, since that denotes that you have some insider information as to the runnings of these businesses.

Q: What if the clerk wants to know how I know so much about guide drops?
A: If asked where you got your info about guides that pennied, simply say either 'the internet' or 'a friend of mine told me they're on clearance'.

Q: But clerks will know what a penny guide is, right? I can talk to them like anyone else here...
A: Never use the word pennied to ANY store clerks unless you have built up a good rapport with them. Even then, it may seem a little fishy if you know more about their shop than they do.

Q: Are guides labeled as a penny on the shelf?

A: Sometimes. Most times, no. GS seems to label everything that gets a price drop, so often times guides will be stickered. But even so, they most likely won't sell them to you. A sticker does not mean 'have to sell'.

Q: I tried to buy a guide that this thread said was pennied and it didn't ring up as such! What gives?
A: Either 1) Our source was wrong (this rarely happens and is usually verified a FEW times within maybe an hour of posting), or 2) The clerk changed the price. It's usually number 2.

Q: What's the easiest way to get penny guides? This sounds like TONS of work!
A: Best Buy is probably the best place to get guides, followed by GameStop, GameCrazy, Toys R Us and then Blockbuster. From what I've seen though, probably 95% of guides that people get are snagged at BB - the rest come from the other stores. But it never hurts to try!

Q: Has there been a drop recently?
A: If you are asking this question you didn't fully understand the OP - go back and read it once more. When a drop happens, it will be posted, and then placed in the second post - trust us.

Q: How do you guys know so much about penny guides?
A: We sometimes have inside sources with the information from the stores themselves; other times, fellow CAGS just like you or me simply take suspected guides to the register and ask them to ring them up, to check their prices. Feel free to do this yourself, and help give back to the community by telling us what you find! However, DON'T ask "Has anyone checked XXX lately?", unless you are in the right thread (discussion area).

Thanks to GrilledWitOnions for creating the above FAQ, which should eliminate the need for such questions popping up in the thread from this point on out.
Found a gamecrazy with too many guides, but none where ringing for a penny. They even had the lego star wars guide and all of them where $9.99. MGS4 hardcover was $15 and Madden 09 bundle $35
Should have jumped on that MGS4 guide, dude.
one of my gamestops has FFXII limited edition for 15. Should I go for it? will it be worth more in the future?
Each of my local GS stores had about 11-20 of these in stock, so I can only imagine how 'limited' they were.

I'm just shocked they haven't pennied as of yet.

Lego Star wars for $10 is a great price too.

Unless he confirms it was the Complete Saga, I believe it was the Lego Star Wars II Original. That one is at my GC for $9.99. Do we know conclusively which one was pennied? The wiki post says simply Lego Star Wars.

bump for the 3rd monday of the month!

I know lox was predicting doom and gloom, but I am ever hopeful of a chance to stick it to the evil empire.

You guys can go and check for yourself instead of waiting around. I'm part of the camp that thinks no drop will happen today, so I personally wouldn't bother. November isn't traditionally a month for guide drops. I don't think we will see another one until January or February.

I'd check, but I don't work until Thursday and the commute's too long.

I still doubt anything dropped though, as nothing has disappeared from the site lately and there hasn't been much to drop.

Of course, I'd like to be wrong though.

Yeah, I agree w/ Doomstink and loxthefox; if you take a look at the guides, most stores have already gone through and pulled all the old drops (i found a few up to last week) Now its look pretty sparse everywhere...I don't think any reason to drop until after X-Mas. If people are going to buy a guide, they won't mind if its at full price if its a gift (looking at soccer moms)

No drop. I live right across the street from a BB (where I had great luck in October). Nothing that I could tell had dropped. Took a BUNCH of guides up to the register (Res Evil 5, SW:CW, SW:TFU, Far Cry 2, Halo Wars, Modern Warfare 1, Prototype, etc). They all rang up at full price.

A YMMV Best Buy guide offer: local BB had ODST guide, NCAA guide, Prototype Limited guide for 70% off--similar to what some BB did with Fallout guides a while ago.

Oooh, ODST. One of my BBs has about 100 of them. lol Unfortunately it's not a quick trip for me so I'll wait to see if anyone else has any luck.

Considering NCAA Football 10 pennied last drop, it's selling for 3/10ths of a cent? Bitchin!

There was a Prototype LE? Since when?

Whoops---I need to make a quick little change...it wasn't a limited edition Prototype guide, it was a standard one. Regardless, this is still probably extremely YMMV.

I'm interested in one...

Can anyone confirm any other guides that might've dropped at Gamestop? What happened to all of the people who diligently checked their local stores for us? I know I certainly don't even bother with GS anymore unless it's outta town someplace.

Not sure I want to write this and hope it is not true~

Went into BBuy today and pm'd a few guides 50% off with the TRU ad -
Bought Borderlands, Batman, Dragon Age Collector's and wanted Operation Flash Point which was not available...
Had the OFP guide looked up at a kiosk and the gal could not find the guide listed (I know they stocked it during the Buy 2 get 1 sale as I thumbed through a copy)
At the register the pm was approved by a young smart manager I enjoy talking to.
(without me asking) He said they will no longer have penny guides (as of a few weeks ago) according to a corporate directive. BBuy staff are not allowed to buy them and all must be sent back to the warehouse.
I then asked him if this was new news and had any been pulled and sent back.
He replied about 2 weeks ago, the first batch was pulled and sent.

I left this location and traveled to another where I had actually thumbed through the OFP guide I was still seeking. Again, no copies and when looked up, again ... not in the system...

I hope this info is wrong but ....

That will be horrible if it is true. I don't get why the last drop was on the website if they aren't supposed to be sold.

Plus it could mean getting denied at the register a lot more if we happen to find any guides they missed (if they even drop them to a penny anymore now).

I truly hope this is not so. BB is the only place I can get guides anymore (TRU died a long time ago, and no GS has sold them within ~ 2 years around me). sigh.

Also, did you decide you didn't want to do the guide trade? I never heard back.

hmmm, i was at best buy yesterday, all the guides were now in one place in a wire rack. seems like this might have a little truth to it. if they keep are them in a place were they cant have extras (penny guide)

Screw you Neo, I'm worried about my pennied guides!! ;)

If they are on the site ever again, they probably would be required to sell them if the store has them in stock. Since they could be ordered for instore pickup and such.

This could possibly be a YMMV situation, as I often look at the employee news at my store and I've heard nothing about penny guides. It's possible I might have missed something like that with Black Friday info and all though. Somehow I doubt it, as I've heard this song and dance since I started collecting penny guides 2 years ago. Only way we'll know for sure is to wait until next drop around late January/early February or so.

Oh, and donut, I don't believe BB ever carried the Operation Flashpoint guide.

Finally, looking through the system earlier this week, It looked like BB was planned to have carried the Valkyria Chronicles guide at one point, but didn't. Sigh....

I hope you are right, but this manager has worked at this location for at least 2 years. He actually knows his stuff and was fine (quietly so) with buying penny guides. He is a gamer and I believe about a year ago, I brought him and one other staff member an extra guide found at GS. He had no reason to bring this up and was quite bummed for himself and other staff/gamers.
I know for a fact at least one store I visited today carried that title. I actually flipped through it while discussing the game with a staff member.

Last year these stores stopped having drops for a few months (holidays) but during these months, the number of titles grew until the Feb drop. They did not ship them out.

Must've missed it. Seemed liked they'd carry that guide due to their shipments of the game having exclusive content.

When I talk though, I just base my info on the site and my store, which hasn't shipped any guides back since the last drop. Could be company-wide, could be YMMV, who knows? I'll have to check everything out when I get to work tomorrow morning. Hopefully I can get something concrete.

Yeah, it's about time for a post talking about how the days of penny guides at Best Buy are over, since these posts happen about twice a year, every year. I've seen posts with essentially the same story for several years now and the end result is the same: some people will continue to strike gold and some people will strike out. Honestly, I wish these doom and gloom posts would subside because there really isn't much of a point to them.

I can recall 2 years ago someone coming in talking about how they heard a manager say this or that about penny guides, so it looked like the days of penny guides were over, yet people have still managed to get them time and time again. Guides will continue to drop. Some will score and some won't. Then in about 6 months or so someone else will come in with some more "inside information" and some will score and some won't.

Every year Corporate sends out a memo to crack down on penny guides. And every year they crack down for a month or two until they all forget about it and scramble to meet the next memo corporate sends out.
