Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread XI

Status
Not open for further replies.
First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

Useful Information(and links):

Reduced Price Guide Discussion Thread(KEEP ALL DISCUSSION NOT RELATED TO GUIDE DROPS HERE!!!):

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169252

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you. Please, whenever possible, use RED font to make the drop info stand out. Thanks again.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinaevere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Common Guide Drop Related Questions(FAQ):

FAQ - If you are new (or a vet with a few questions) look here SECOND! (After reading the above!)

Q: What Are Penny Guides?
A: Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Q: Do all guides from all stores drop at the same time?
A: No. While most chains have nationwide drops within their own store (as in every BB will have the same drops coast to coast), not every different chain drops at the same time (what drops at BB is NOT necessarily dropped at GS). When in doubt, check post TWO for drop info.

Q: I found a penny guide and a clerk denied me! I'ma report 'em!
A: Whoa, hold your horses there, pardner! First of all, not a question. Second, just because something is on the shelf, the clerk does NOT have to sell you that item. Most stores are PRIVATE property and as such can deny you just about anything they want - including a sale. The best advice is to not be rude, not be arrogant, and just try hard to get them to have pity on you.

Q: Why don't the clerks want to sell me their penny guides? Aren't they just throwing them away?
A: As stated above, the stores are ordered by the publisher to trash the guides, and are then given credit for those guides. If they don't do this, the publisher won't give them the credit - it's like losing a sale. On the employee level, selling a penny guide can sometimes get them in trouble (or even fired!) I know it seems silly, but this is their job we're talking about! Respect the man (or woman) behind the counter and you'll get a lot more guides than otherwise!

Q: Should I just ask if the store has penny guides then?
A: No, since that denotes that you have some insider information as to the runnings of these businesses.

Q: What if the clerk wants to know how I know so much about guide drops?
A: If asked where you got your info about guides that pennied, simply say either 'the internet' or 'a friend of mine told me they're on clearance'.

Q: But clerks will know what a penny guide is, right? I can talk to them like anyone else here...
A: Never use the word pennied to ANY store clerks unless you have built up a good rapport with them. Even then, it may seem a little fishy if you know more about their shop than they do.

Q: Are guides labeled as a penny on the shelf?
A: Sometimes. Most times, no. GS seems to label everything that gets a price drop, so often times guides will be stickered. But even so, they most likely won't sell them to you. A sticker does not mean 'have to sell'.

Q: I tried to buy a guide that this thread said was pennied and it didn't ring up as such! What gives?
A: Either 1) Our source was wrong (this rarely happens and is usually verified a FEW times within maybe an hour of posting), or 2) The clerk changed the price. It's usually number 2.

Q: What's the easiest way to get penny guides? This sounds like TONS of work!
A: Best Buy is probably the best place to get guides, followed by GameStop, GameCrazy, Toys R Us and then Blockbuster. From what I've seen though, probably 95% of guides that people get are snagged at BB - the rest come from the other stores. But it never hurts to try!

Q: Has there been a drop recently?
A: If you are asking this question you didn't fully understand the OP - go back and read it once more. When a drop happens, it will be posted, and then placed in the second post - trust us.

Q: How do you guys know so much about penny guides?
A: We sometimes have inside sources with the information from the stores themselves; other times, fellow CAGS just like you or me simply take suspected guides to the register and ask them to ring them up, to check their prices. Feel free to do this yourself, and help give back to the community by telling us what you find! However, DON'T ask "Has anyone checked XXX lately?", unless you are in the right thread (discussion area).

Thanks to GrilledWitOnions for creating the above FAQ, which should eliminate the need for such questions popping up in the thread from this point on out.

Scored a few Dragon Age CE and almost every guide except Fallout 3 GOTY CE in one of the three BB I went to. The others had stuff pulled or no stock left

If anyone wants to know if a trip to your local BB is even worth it(aka check stock online), just bring up the stock check page for a guide that's in stock on the BB site and edit the link for it with one of the SKU#'s people have provided for guides on the drop list for today.

Hit enter next, then enter your zip code and it should switch the page to a stock locator for the guide(s) you want to check stock on.

Scored a DAO CE at the first BB I went to.(I put it behind the mass of ODST guide last night, and they missed it when doing the pulls this morning)

Went to the store that had 2 FO3 GOTY CEs when I called last night and although they had done the pulls, the guy was nice when I asked where they were and he said they pulled them because they dropped to a penny, but he went and got one out of the back for me to purchase. He didn't even try to jack the price up on me. :)

I didn't push my luck there, I just got the GOTY CE and ran since that's one of only two from this drop that I wanted for myself.

At the third store they were in mid pull, but they let me grab dem shitz and go, so I got the following for $.01 each: 2x Cheat Code Overload Winter 2010, 1x Maio and Luigi Bowser's Inside Story, 3x Madden 10(wanted one for my collection), 1x FF Crystal Bearers, 2x Kingdom Hearts 358/2 or whatever it is, 1x Saboteur, and 1x Army of Two 40th Day.

All in all, successful all around except for not being able to fuck with the managers at Chapel Hill, OH BB since they had pulled all of theirs. :(

I can't get it to work. It tells me that all my stores have Fallout 3 GOTY CE and Dragon Age CE in stock, so I think I screwed up somewhere.

1st Houston area report .. Gulfgate Bestbuy .. nothing .. nada .. zero

Going to check if other Houston east side Bestbuy will have something in stock

Houston CAGs .. share the wealth and info .. dont be El Hoardo!

Hit 3 stores, one when it opened and didn't get anything. BB has finally stopped me. I will never finish my "guide fort". I only have enough for a throne.

I did notice all three stores had the actual store manager present as well as 2 corporate (suits) managers. I saw a bioshock 2 LE for the first time, so that was cool.

Two outta three stores which usually have penny guides around me pulled them today (or sometime previously). This was the first time for my "go to" store which recently moved the video game section from the back of the store to the front. Since then it has always been better organized and watchdogged by a salesperson and the front security people.

I can confirm all the posted drops except for Dragon Age and Animal Crossing...the only freakin' ones I really wanted.:bomb:
Did you clear them out or leave anything? Darksiders or Saboteur specifically?
They had no Darksiders and I think they had Saboteur. I didn't go today I went on Sunday.

I only managed to pick up 2 copies of Final Fantasy Crystal chronicles. That was the only penny guides that I could see unfortunately. That store has been pretty good on pulling guides. Into the trading stack they'll go.

So envy...

went to my closest bb, everything is pulled, my stashes are emptied as well...this is the first time they pulled that store...
only managed a couple of wow guides/atlas because they didn't pull the pc guide session =.=''

Had planned to scoop up extras of the guides requested here over the weekend. Unfortunately, turns out my area is barren of pennied guides. Sorry.

I really miss all the old busted stores they replaced with shiny, new ones. Used to be that they'd have guides from 6-month old drops and nobody, from the CSRs to the Managers, gave a fuck. Now they run a tight ship.

Pretty much a strike out for me at two locations. :( I think they were pulled.

I did, however, find an overlooked Far Cry 2 guide for $0.01, so not a complete loss, just mostly a loss.

I managed to find an empoyee willing to check the warehouse for all the pulled guides for me (like I did for Last year's June drop), only this time they were all gone. fuck.

Yeah, I had to go 30 miles out of town to find one store out of 3 that had guides. At first, I brought up 4, no doubles, girl didn't even care! Said, I'd be right back to get some more (b/c I forgot my damn phone w/ the list on it in the car!) Grabbed a sh*t ton, more than I could carry and went back up. This time got a white shirt and was like  but she smiled and said, "oh more penny guides?" i said, "Yeah, it's a pretty good deal! :D" She said other people had been in there before me and she was going to get some.

Well I said, "you can't go all will-nilly picking guides", asked her if she had email on her phone, she did, so I emailed her the list. She was hot, but I'm ball-n-chained so oh well!!

Ugh. 3 out of four BBs had pre-pulled. So some of the guides became misplaced on Friday at the lone store that did not. Fast forward to this morning...

It was kind of stressful knowing this was my only shot at getting the guides. Therefore, I used a bit of strategy. I took 2 guides I cared the least about, AC and Army of Two, up to the register. The young girl rang them up...then re-rang them. So I did my spiel about how they are old and no one buys them anymore, yada-yada-yada.

She eventually lets me buy them. Nice.

So I go back for the ones I actually care about: KH, Mario/Bowser, Darksiders, and Saboteur. Only one of each.

While I'm in the game section I'm noticing I'm getting a lot of attention from the employees. I wait until they leave and go back up to the register. Luckily the girl who let me buy them is still there, but there is now a line.

When it's my turn some other dude turns up and says he can help me. So I turn to the guy behind me and tell him he can go. Well the Blue shirt won't stand for that and insists I go to him.

He starts ringing up the guides (I had brought a $20 game up as well to try and take attention away from the guides) and as they are coming up a penny he asks me if I go on the Internet to see when they penny out. I said yeah, you can find all sorts of stuff on there and how I collect, don't sell them hoping he will be more generous. He says how he's seen me in there "doing it before" and how they send them back and get credit for them.

I haven't gotten a guide from them for about nine months to a year. With all the people that go in there, all the attractive young ladies, how the hell does he recognize me - a nondescript, male professional that they probably see 50 of every day?

He called the manager and explained how I was "buying up all the penny guides". After explaining to her what a penny guide was, she denied me the sale.

Sorry for the long story, but getting these guides has become increasingly difficlult and frustrating.

Grabbed many shits.

Store I went to had one Dragon Age LE, but it wasn't sealed. No seal = no UPC code. I foolishly forgot to write down the SKU #'s, and so after about five minutes the cashier dug up the number for the regular edition guide - $24.99. I decided it was worth it. Besides not being sealed it's minty fresh. Don't judge me.

Here's the rest
x1 World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King
x1 Final Fantasy CC: The Crystal Bearers
x3 Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days (one has a badly folded cover)
x2 Scribblenauts
x4 Animal Crossing (there were more but they were unsealed)
x2 Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story
x2 Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Sky (one with folded cover)
x2 Darksiders
x2 The Saboteur (one unsealed)

Anyway, what's up with the unsealed guides sitting on the shelf? What kind of person just rips the shrink wrap off of something in the middle of a store?

Your average joe consumer is a complete fucktard. That's what.

Went to the one in Palo Alta
1x FO3
3x Darksiders
4x Saboteurs
3x L4D2
3x AoT:40th day

I grabed 1 of Darksiders, AoT and FO3. Left the Rest.

No DA:O LE guide here.

Weird pull for me today. Found NOTHING else, but did run into (4) DAO collector editions at the store by work. Will check one more store on my way home tonight for a couple others.

Also, to any and all Santa Fe/Albuquerque CAGs: You're welcome.

I would normally be on vacation in Santa Fe during this week. If I had been there today, as was planned before I was laid off earlier this year, I would have already completed my pillage and raze campaign of your BBYs, as I have done with the past two June penny-guide drops.

So. You're welcome.

People(like me back in the day)like to use the guides as a reference and just come into the store to look something up from a guide, then leave the store without buying it.

Why buy a guide when you can stand there and 'browse' it for free?:D Of course, this was before I found CAG. Now it's more like 'why buy it for MSRP when I can get it for a penny later on'.

That sounds like the third BB store I used to be able to get everything from a drop from.

They just opened within maybe the last two years or so and the first time I went in there I made out like a bandit(30-45 guides in one massive haul).

But every time since then I get the same 1-3 African American girls(I swear they never take a fuckin' day off)and every time it's the same deal. Either I agree to pay cover price or they won't allow them to be sold to me.

Even at my closest store(where I had an interview at about 2 months ago) I swear the managers know me to see me and they know the only time I come in to buy something it's either a loss leader, pennied or free. Maybe that's why I wasn't hired in the first place. Oh well.

So should they thank you for losing your job? That doesn't seem very nice. Of course, neither does saying "you're welcome for not buying that shit that you wanted".
Tried to get dragon age ce and fall out 3 ce guides but they rang up at full price in orlando fl area store
Which store was this at? I tried the Florida Mall and Ocoee locations but it looks like they were pulled and/or someone bought them already. Did end up having much better luck at another one, through :D. Total haul for today:

2x Animal Crossing: City Folk (still at least 5-6 left)
1x Army Of Two: The 40th Day (none left)
2x Darksiders (none left)
5x Dragon Age: Origins LE (2-3 left, may pick those up Thursday when I'm back in that area again)
3x Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days (none left)
2x Left 4 Dead 2 (none left)
2x Madden NFL 10 (10-12 left)
2x Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story (none left)
2x Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers Of Sky (1-2 left)
1x The Saboteur (none left)
1x Scribblenauts (none left)

Didn't see any Fallout 3 GOTY LE (or any of the softcover normal ones for that matter). Will probably make a post in the trade thread later looking for one (Dragon Age LE for Fallout 3 GOTY LE sounds about right).

Jesus, really? Flipping through open, shelf copy guides is one thing. Tearing off the shrinkwrap to a guide so you can get a tip on something because you're stuck is entirely different.

If it sealed, you don't fucking open it in the store. That's like saying I'll go into stores and open sealed games to read the manual, since I want to know if I'll like the combat system. That's not being "cheap." That's being a vandalizing douchebag.

couldnt find any fallout 3 goty ce. i'd be happy to trade with someone if you have extras.

Well, I had a good hull. Got the pokemon and an animal crossing guide for my self, they still had a LE Fallout guide which should net me quite a bit of money, and they were loaded to the brim with Animal Crossing guides that I took 20 of them and they still had a ton left. Going to try to hit one other store today before work, but I am already happy I finally found a store they didn't pull the guides in, most months I walk away with nothing.
All of the lovely Dragon Age CE guides were gone when I got to the North Riverside store.
Damn. Crestwood had 10 Dragon Age CE guides. None today. fuck.
Also what are the SKu's for Dragon Age CE?

Edit Nevermind. I need something else.

Still can't find any Dragon Age CE's. Is there a pretty good chance they'll show up on BestBuy's eBay store? Does anyone have the link for that?

thanks to loxthefox for the update. Was able to score a few guides today after much running around. But managed to pick up the DA CE one I wanted and a few F3 GOTY CEs.

By the way, what the hell does anyone need with 20 Animal Crossing guides?

FORTS! the goal is to always build forts!!

Sacramento (usually reliable) stores looks like they pulled early. Looks like the end of an era.
Was only able to score a Army of Two and a WoW Atlas. :(

I was really hoping to pick up the Fallout 3 CE and Left 4 Dead 2 for friends and family.

I had a decent day. I picked up:

Dragon Age CE
Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days
Left 4 Dead 2
FFCC: Crystal Bearers
The Saboteur

All of these where found in places other than the guide section. Every BB in my area pulled the guides but I was able to pick up what they missed. I'm pretty sure I looted someone's stash at one BB. The 2 guides that I was really hoping to find were FO3 GOTY CE and Darksiders. Well, I found a lone copy of Darksiders but was denied when the girl at the register called about 4 people before the store manager told her to change the price back to the MSRP. Overall, I did better than I expected.

My store had all of these pulled :( Though there was a copy of Bioshock 2 Hardcover and a Mass Effect 2 hardcover that I hope will get pennied

Penny guide throne. It will be glorious.

Anyway, my magical Best Buy that's been so good to me for so long was a barren wasteland of maybe 10-15 columns of Halo ODST guides where the good stuff once sat. But of course the fucking BB associates didn't bother to remove guides from prior drops, so there was a whole row of Brutal Legend's, a few Resistance 2's, and at least one Resident Evil 5 LE. I think they're taunting me.

Past Saturday I picked up a couple GTA4 guides. Got hassled by the yellow shirted guy at the door about them being so cheap, went back and grabbed the remaining 3. He called his store manager, and he said, "so." Went back today and the guides listed were all pulled. Same guy working the door. Apparently too late at another Best Buy where all I saw was a stack of MK vs DC guides. Guy at the register said the guy before me had a stack of 40. Only really wanted the Darksiders guide. There's always the internet to help with achievements.

Had a mixed day... 2 pulled, 2 didn't. I am pissed that the one store I went to that had quite a few DA:O CE guides, I decided to leave 3 (2 unopened, 1 opened) in case a CAG came by later (I got there at open). When I went back at lunch, they had pulled ALL the remaining guides. So I unwittingly sent 3 DA:O to the trash without meaning to. One of the other stores had actually marked their guides with the penny sticker and left them on the floor. I imagine they're pulled now, though, since the Walrus (that hates me) was working the door this afternoon and asked to see my receipt when I was leaving. fuck him. I didn't use my RZ card and I paid with a quarter. I hate that dude.
